SGGS pp 690-691, Dhanaasri M: 4 and 5, Chhant.

 

 

Note: We human beings remain engrossed in our pursuits for worldly pleasures and tend to forget what we are here for. We pursue pleasures but still remain restless because craving for them never ends. When the Almighty is kind to lead to the guru then one obtains awareness of Naam or Divine instructions given to soul, lives by them and feels comfortable. That is the way to obtain solace. In this Shabad, the fourth Guru supplicates to the Almighty, on behalf of the creatures, to facilitate such living and accept us for union with IT-self.

 

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੧   ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Ḏẖanāsrī cẖẖanṯ mėhlā 4 gẖar 1  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

                                                                                                                                             

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Dhanaasri, (chhant) song of love for the Almighty, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the first beat.   Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥

Har jī▫o kirpā kare ṯā nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai jī▫o. Saṯgur milai subẖā▫e sahj guṇ gā▫ī▫ai jī▫o.

 

When (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (kripa karey) is kind (ta) then we (dhiaaeeai) pay attention to (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands, as guide.

(Satigur-u) the true guru is (milai) found (subhaaey) with true love for God, and with his guidance, we (sahj-i) intuitively (gaaeeai = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of the Almighty.

 

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਸਦਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾ ਆਪਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵਏ ॥ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ॥

Guṇ gā▫e vigsai saḏā an▫ḏin jā āp sācẖe bẖāv▫e.  Ahaʼnkār ha▫umaiṯajai mā▫i▫ā sahj nām samāv▫e.

 

(Ja) when (saachey) the Eternal (aap-i = self) Almighty is (bhaavaey) pleased to motivate, one (gaaey = sings) praises and emulates (gun) Divine virtues, and (sadaa) ever (vigsai = blossoms) remains happy.

S/he (tajey) gives up (ahankaar-u) vanity, (haumai) ego and attachment to (maaia) the world-play – relatives, wealth, friendship/rivalry etc. – and (samaavaey = is absorbed) leads life (naam-i) by Naam (sahj-i) naturally – all the time.

 

ਆਪਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਆਪਿ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

Āp karṯā kare so▫ī āp ḏe▫e ṯa pā▫ī▫ai.  Har jī▫o kirpā kare ṯā nāmḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai jī▫o. ||1||

 

(Soee = that) the One (karta) Creator (aap-i) IT-self (karey) does; when (aap-i = self) IT (dey-i) gives (ta) then we (paaeeai = obtain) have – the motivation to praise and emulate Divine virtues.

It is when (har-i jeeo) the revered Almighty (kripa karey) bestows grace (ta) then we (dhiaaeeai) pay attention, to live by Naam. 1.

 

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੈ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਮੈ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
Anḏar sācẖā nehu pūre saṯigurai jī▫o.  Ha▫o ṯis sevī ḏin rāṯ mai kaḏe na vīsrai jī▫o.

 

I have (saacha = true) sincere (neyhu) love (poorey = perfect, satigurai = of true guru) for the Almighty (andar-i = within) in the mind.

May (hau) I (seyvi = serve) be in obedience to (tis-u = that) God (din-u) day and (raat-i) night; may the Divine (kadey na) never (veesrai = forgotten) be out of (mai = me) my mind.

 

ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਈ ਤਾ ਜੀਵਾ ॥ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਸੁਣੀ ਤ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਾ ॥

Kaḏe na visārī an▫ḏin samĥārī jā nām la▫ī ṯā jīvā.  Sarvaṇī suṇī ṯa ih man ṯaripṯai gurmukẖ amriṯ pīvā.

 

May I (kadey na) never (visaari) forget, and (andin-u = every-day) ever (samhaari) keep God in mind; (ja) when I (laee = take/utter) assimilate (naam-u) Divine commands (ta) then I (jeeva = live) have the strength not to fall prey to other ideas.

When I (suni) listen to Naam/Divine commands (sravani) with the ears; (ta) then I (peeva) drink (amrit-u) the life-giving nectar, i.e. remember and emulate Divine virtues, (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance; (ta) then (ih-u = this) my (man-u) mind (triptai) is satisfied.

 

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਚਰੈ ॥ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੈ ॥੨॥

Naḏar kare ṯā saṯgur mele an▫ḏin bibek buḏẖ bicẖrai.  Anḏar sācẖānehu pūre saṯigurai. ||2||

 

When the Almighty (nadar-i karey) bestows grace, (ta) then IT (meyley = causes to meet) leads to (satigur-u) the true guru; and one (bichrai) thinks and acts with (bibeyk) a discerning (budh-i) mind, i.e. gives up rituals or/and worship of gods/goddesses, and pays attention to Naam.

This happens when there is (saacha = true) sincere (neyhu) love (poorey satigurai) for the Almighty (andar-i) in the mind. 2.

 

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥

Saṯsangaṯ milai vadbẖāg ṯā har ras āv▫e jī▫o.  An▫ḏin rahai liv lā▫e ṯa sahj samāv▫e jī▫o.

 

It is (vaddbhaag-i) with good fortune that (satsangat-i) holy congregation (milai = is found) is joined, (ta) then one – obtains awareness of Divine virtues and commands and – (ras-u avaaey) relishes thinking of and emulating, virtues of the Almighty.

When one (andin-u = every-day) ever (rahey) remains (liv = attention, laaey = fixed) focused on Naam, (ta) then s/he (sahj-i) steadfastly (samaavey = absorbed) keeps the Master in mind all the time – remains conscious of Divine virtues and commands in thought, word and deed.

 

ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥ ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਜਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥

Sahj samāvai ṯā har man bẖāvai saḏā aṯīṯ bairāgī.  Halaṯ palaṯ sobẖājag anṯar rām nām liv lāgī.

 

When one (sadaa) forever (ateet-u) is unattached to the world-play, s/he (bairaagi) longs for, and has, (samaavai = absorbed) the Master in mind (sahj-i) steadfastly all the time, i.e. practices Naam; (ta) then one becomes (bhaavai) pleasing to the Almighty (man-i) in the mind.

One whose (liv) attention (laagi) is focused (naam-i) on virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Master, s/he gets (sobha) glory (antar-i) amongst (jag = world) the people (halat-i) here, and (palat-i) in the hereafter in Divine court.

 

ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਦੁਹਾ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਭਾਵਏ ॥ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Harakẖ sog ḏuhā ṯe mukṯā jo parabẖ kare so bẖāv▫e.  Saṯsangaṯ milai vadbẖāg ṯā har ras āv▫e jī▫o. ||3||

 

S/he remains (mukta = free) unaffected (tey) by (duha) both (harakh) joy and (sog) sorrow, and (bhaavaey) is happy with (jo) whatever (prabh-u) the Master (karey) does, i.e. maintains equipoise.

(Satsangat-i) holy congregation (milai) is found/joined (vaddbhaag-i) with good fortune, then one – gets awareness of – and (ras-u aavaey) relishes remembering and emulating – virtues of the Almighty. 3.

 

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਮਿ ਜੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਹਾਇ ਹਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥

Ḏūjai bẖā▫e ḏukẖ ho▫e manmukẖ jam johi▫ā jī▫o.  Hā▫e hā▫e kare ḏin rāṯ mā▫i▫ā ḏukẖ mohi▫ā jī▫o.

 

Pursuit of (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas – causes one to transgress – and one (hoey = happens) comes to (dukh-u) grief as s/he (johiaa) is eyed (jam-i) by Divine justice – which does not let a transgressor have peace within when alive, and does not let the soul get to the Almighty on death.

The soul (mohiaa) charmed by temptations in (maaia) the world-play suffers, and (din-u = day, raat-i = night) ever (haaey haaey karey) groans (dukh-i = with pain) due to pangs of separation from the Master.

 

ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਹਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਵਏ ॥ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਏ ॥

Mā▫i▫ā ḏukẖ mohi▫ā ha▫umai rohi▫ā merī merī karaṯ vihāva▫e.  Jo parabẖ ḏe▫e ṯis cẖeṯai nāhī anṯ ga▫i▫ā pacẖẖuṯāva▫e.

 

(Mohiaa) being enticed (maaia) by the world-play (dukh-i = pain) causes separation from the Almighty; it results in (haumai = ego) acting by self-will and when something is not achieved one is (rohiaa) angered; life (vihaavaey) passes (karat = saying) being attached to (meyri meyri = my, mine) wealth and relatives etc.

S/he (naahi) does not (cheytai) keep in mind (prabh-u) the Master, (jo) who (dey-i) gives the objects of pleasure, i.e. one acts by self-will and not Divine commands, and (ant-i) at the end of life (pachhutaavaey) repents (gaiaa) on getting to Divine court – for not having had peace in life, and is not able to unite with the Almighty.

 

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੋਹਿਆ ॥ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਿ ਜੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥

Bin nāvai ko sāth na cẖālai puṯar kalṯar mā▫i▫ā ḏẖohi▫ā.  Ḏūjai bẖā▫eḏukẖ ho▫e manmukẖ jam johi▫ā jī▫o. ||4||

 

(Ko na) nothing/none (bin-u) except conformance to (naavai) Naam/ Divine virtues and commands, (chaalai) goes (saath-i) with the soul to help; support of (putr = sons) the children, (klatr) spouse and (maaia) wealth (dhohiaa = deceptive) is only in life, and ends at death – one commits transgressions for their sake but they are not there to help at the time of reckoning.

Pursuing (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas (hoey = happens) results in (dukh-u) distress as one (johiaa) is eyed (jam-i) by Divine justice, which holds the transgressor-soul back from the Almighty. 4.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥

Kar kirpā leho milā▫e mahal har pā▫i▫ā jī▫o.  Saḏā rahai kar joṛ parabẖman bẖā▫i▫ā jī▫o.

 

O Almighty, one whom You (kar-i kirpa) are kind to (leyhu milaaey = bring together) motivate to join holy congregation, that person (paaia) finds (mahal-u) the palace of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. finds the Master within.

S/he (sadaa) ever (rahai) remains (kar jorr-i) with folded hands, i.e. ready to humbly obey every command of the Almighty, and (bhaaia) loves (prabh-u) the Master (man-i) in the mind – from the heart.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
Parabẖ man bẖāvai ṯā hukam samāvai hukam man sukẖpā▫i▫ā.  An▫ḏin japaṯ rahai ḏin rāṯī sėhje nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.

 

When one (bhaavai) loves (prabh-u) the Master (man-i) from the heart, (ta) then s/he (samaavai = absorbed) lives (hukam-i) by Divine commands and (ma’nn-i) by obeying (hukam-u) Divine commands, s/he (paaia) attains (sukh-u) peace – here and in the hereafter.

S/he (andin-u = every day) ever (rahai) remains engaged in (japat) remembrance/obedience of the Almighty, and (sahjey) steadfastly (dhiaaia = pays attention) lives by (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands.

 

ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਏ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥੧॥

Nāmo nām milī vadi▫ā▫ī Nānak nām man bẖāv▫e.  Kar kirpā leho milā▫e mahal har pāv▫e jī▫o. ||5||1||

 

S/he (mili) gets (vaddiaaee = greatness) glorification (Naamo) from Naam/God for compliance to Naam; Naam (bhaavaey) pleases (man-i) his/her mind, says fourth Nanak.

O Almighty, one whom You (kar-i kirpa) are kind to (leyhu milaaey = bring together) motivate to join holy congregation, that person (paavey) finds (mahal-u) the palace of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. finds the Master within. (The guru says elsewhere: Vich sangat har prabh vasai jeeo; M: 4, p 94 – the Almighty Master dwells in the congregation where Divine virtues are recounted an learnt to emulate). 5. 1.

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਛੰਤ           ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਜਿਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਵੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥

Saṯgur ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl jis sang har gāvī▫ai jī▫o.  Amriṯ har kā nām sāḏẖsang rāvī▫ai jī▫o.

 

(Satigur) the true guru is (daiaal = compassionate) kind to (deen) the hapless, in (jis-u) whose/his (sang-i) congregation we (gaaveeai = sing) praise (har-i) the Almighty.

We (raaveeai) remember (amrit-u) the life-giving (naam-u) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty, (saadh-sang-i = company of guru) in holy congregation.

 

ਭਜੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧੂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਨਾਸਏ ॥ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਕਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਏ ॥

Bẖaj sang sāḏẖū ik arāḏẖū janam maran ḏukẖ nās▫e.  Ḏẖur karam likẖi▫ā sācẖ sikẖi▫ā katī jam kī fās▫e.

 

(Bhaj-u = run) go to (sang-i = company) congregation of (saadhoo) the guru, and (araadhoo) invoke (ik-u) the One Master; you will give up vices and (dukh) pain of being in cycles of (janam) births and (maran) deaths (naasaey = destroyed) will end.

One in whose destiny it is (likhia) written to receive (karam-u) Divine grace to find the guru, obtains (saach-u = true) the right (sikhiaa) guidance; his/her (phaasaey) noose of (jam) Divine justice (kattee) is cut, i.e. s/he remains free of vices, which are impediments to find the Almighty within.

 

ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ਨਾਠੇ ਛੁਟੀ ਗਾਠੇ ਜਮ ਪੰਥਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਆਵੀਐ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਐ ॥੧॥

Bẖai bẖaram nāṯẖe cẖẖutī gāṯẖe jam panth mūl na āvī▫ai.  Binvanṯ Nānak ḏẖār kirpā saḏā har guṇ gāvī▫ai. ||1||

 

His/her (bhai) fears of retribution for wrongdoings and (bharam) the doubt – whether the Almighty is omnipresent – (naatthey = run) are dispelled, (gaatthey = knot) attachments to the world-play (chhutti = un-tied) are broken and s/he does not (aaveeai = come) walk (panth-i) on the path of, i.e. is not detained by, (jam) Divine justice (mool-i) at all.

 (Binvant-i) prays fifth Nanak: O Master, please (dhaar-i) bestow (kirpa) mercy that we (gaaveeai = sing) praise (gun) virtues of You, (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਨਿਧਰਿਆ ਧਰ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੋ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੋ ਜੀਉ ॥

Niḏẖri▫ā ḏẖar ek nām niranjano jī▫o.  Ŧū ḏāṯā ḏāṯār sarab ḏukẖ bẖanjno jī▫o.

 

(Niranjano) the pristine (naam-u) Almighty is (eyk-u) the lone (dhar) support of (nidhariaa) the support-less.

O Almighty, (too) You are (daata = giver) the benefactor who (daataar-u) ever looks after the creatures. You (bhanjno) destroy (sarab) all (dukh) distress.

 

ਦੁਖ ਹਰਤ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੁਖਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਪਲ ਏਕ ਮਾਹਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥

Ḏukẖ haraṯ karṯā sukẖah su▫āmī saraṇ sāḏẖū ā▫i▫ā.  Sansār sāgar mahā bikẖ▫ṛā pal ek māhi ṯarā▫i▫ā.

 

One who (aaiaa = comes, saran-i = in care) places the self in care and obedience of (saadhoo) the guru – and obeys Divine commands, (karta) the Creator, (suaami) the Master/source (sukhah) of solace, (harat) pushes away his/her (dukh) distress.

 IT (taraaia) ferries him/her across (mahaa) very (bikhrra) difficult to overcome (sanasaar-u) world-(saagar-u) ocean of vices (maah-i) in (eyk) one (pal) moment.

Message:  One who starts practicing Divine virtues and commands, immediately gives up vices.

 

ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਥਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਅੰਜਨੋ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਦੁਖ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨੋ ॥੨॥

Pūr rahi▫ā sarab thā▫ī gur gi▫ān neṯrī anjno.  Binvanṯ Nānak saḏā simrī sarab ḏukẖ bẖai bẖanjno. ||2||

 

The Almighty (poor-i rahiaa) pervades in (sarab) all (thaaee) places, but is found by one to whom receives (gur) the guru administers (anjano) the eye medicine of (giaan-u) awareness (neytri = eye) to the inner eye, i.e. imparts awareness of Naam/Divine commands.

(Binvant-i) prays fifth Nanak: May I (sadaa) ever (simree) keep in mind Naam of the Almighty who (bhanjano = destroys) dispels all (bhai) fear of (dukh) distress, i.e. living by Naam obviates problems in life, and in the hereafter. 2.

 

ਆਪਿ ਲੀਏ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀਆ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੀਆ ਜੀਉ ॥

Āp lī▫e laṛ lā▫e kirpā ḏẖārī▫ā jī▫o.  Mohi nirguṇ nīcẖ anāth parabẖ agam āpārī▫ā jī▫o.

 

Taking the second line first; (Moh-i) I am (nirgun-u) virtue-less, (neech-u) lowly, and (anaath-u = orphan) hapless while (prabh) the Master is so great as to be (agam) beyond reach, and (apaareeaa) Infinite.

IT (kirpa dhaareeaa) showed kindness, and (aap-i = on IT’s own) graciously (lee-ey laaey) attached me (larr-i) to IT’s scarf, i.e. has taken me in IT’s care.

 

ਦਇਆਲ ਸਦਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੀਚ ਥਾਪਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਵਸਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਗਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਾਰਿਆ ॥

Ḏa▫i▫āl saḏā kirpāl su▫āmī nīcẖ thāpaṇhāri▫ā.  Jī▫a janṯ sabẖ vas ṯerai sagal ṯerī sāri▫ā.

 

(Suaami) the Master is (sadaa) ever (daiaal) compassionate and (kripal) merciful, who (thaapanhaaria = installs) gives honor to (neech) the lowly.

O Almighty, (sabh-i) all (jeea jant) creatures are under (teyrai) Your (vas-i) control, i.e. are subject to Your will, and (sagal) all are (teyri) in Your (saariaa) care, i.e. You are the Master and provider of all.

 

ਆਪਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਸਗਲ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਆ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਜੀਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਬਨਵਾਰੀਆ ॥੩॥

Āp karṯā āp bẖugṯā āp sagal bīcẖārī▫ā.  Binvanṯ Nānak guṇ gā▫e jīvā har jap japa▫o banvārī▫ā. ||3||

 

The Almighty is (aap-i) IT-self (karta = Creator) the provider as well as (bhugta) the consumer – being in the creatures –  and IT-self (beechaareea) deliberates on their deeds and decides destiny of everyone as the Master.

(Binavant-i) prays fifth Nanak: May I ever (gaaey = sing) praise and emulate (gun) Divine virtues so as (jeeva = live) not to succumb to vices; may I (japau) remember to (jap-u = remembrance) Naam/commands of (banvaareeaa = gardener of the forests) the Almighty. 3.

 

ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਈ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਨਿਤਿ ਜਪਹਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਤੋਲਈ ਜੀਉ ॥

Ŧerā ḏaras apār nām amola▫ī jī▫o.  Niṯ jāpėh ṯere ḏās purakẖ aṯola▫ī jī▫o.

 

(Terya) Your (daras-u) vision/expanse is (apaar-u) infinite and (naam-u) commands (amolaee) price-less.

O (atolaee = not weighable) immeasurable (purakh-u) all-pervasive Master, (terey) Your (daas = servants) seekers (nit-i) ever (japah-i) remember You.

                       

ਸੰਤ ਰਸਨ ਵੂਠਾ ਆਪਿ ਤੂਠਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਹਿ ਸੇਈ ਮਾਤਿਆ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਹਾ ਭਾਗੇ ਸਦਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗਿਆ ॥

Sanṯ rasan vūṯẖā āp ṯūṯẖā har rasėh se▫ī māṯi▫ā.  Gur cẖaran lāge mahā bẖāge saḏā an▫ḏin jāgi▫ā.

 

You (vootthaa = live) remain on (rasan) the tongues of those (sant) seekers with whom (aap-i = self) You (tootthaa) are pleased; (seyee) they are (maatia) intoxicated with (har-i) Divine (rasah-i = taste) experience.

They (maha = great) highly (bhaagey) fortunate (laagey = attached) being at (charan) feet of guru, i.e. they have found the guru and with his guidance, are (sadaa) forever (andin-u) always (jaagia = awake) conscious of Naam.

 

ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਤਬ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲਈ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਧੂਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਮੋਲਈ ॥੪॥੧॥

Saḏ saḏā simarṯab▫y su▫āmī sās sās guṇ bol▫ī.  Binvanṯ Nānak ḏẖūr sāḏẖū nām parabẖū amola▫ī. ||4||1||

 

The seekers (sadaa sadaa) for ever (simratabay) remember virtues and commands of (suaami) the Master (saas-i saas-i = with every breath) at every step in life by (bolaee = say) praising and emulating (gun) Divine virtues.

Fifth Nanak (binvant-i) prays (dhhoor-i = dust of feet) for ability to follow (saadhoo) the guru and as taught by him, to emulate (amolaee) the priceless (naam-u) virtues of the Almighty. 4. 1.
