ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦਵੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ॥ ਜਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਆਤਮ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Jīvan paḏvī har ke ḏās Jin mili▫ā āṯam pargās ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri (Daas = servants) devotees of the Eternal attain (jeevan) life (padvi) status, i.e. do not fall prey to temptations. They are those (milia) by meeting (jin) whom, i.e. in whose company, (aatam) inner-self is (pargaas) the mind is enlightened, i.e. one becomes aware of Naam/Divine virtues and commands. 1
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਕਾਨੀ ॥ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Har kā simran sun man kānī Sukẖ pāvahi har ḏu▫ār parānī ||1|| rahā▫o
O (praani) mortal, (sun-i) listen to (simran-u) remembrance/singing of Divine virtues by the devotees, (kaani) with the ears – and emulate them – this way you will (paavah-i) obtain (sukh-u) comfort/acceptance at (har-i) Divine (duaar) abode – and be united with the Creator. 1.

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਗੋਪਾਲੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥੨॥੧੦੧॥੧੭੦॥
Āṯẖ pahar ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai gopāl Nānak ḏarsan ḏekẖ nihāl ||2||101||170||
Let us (dhiaaeeai) pay attention to/obey commands of (gopaal) the Sustainer of the. You will be (nihaa-ul) happy to (deykh-i) obtain (darsan-i) Divine vision. 2. 101. 170.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਭਈ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿਦਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਤਾਪ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri
(Saant-i) peace of mind (bhaee) is experienced when (paaee = put in) granted by obeying (gobid) the Master of the world with guidance of (gur) the guru. This is how (taap = fever) afflictions caused by (paap) wrongdoings (binsey = destroyed) end. 1.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਤ ਰਸਨ ਬਖਾਨ ॥ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਰੋਗ ਭਏ ਕਲਿਆਨ ॥੧॥
Rām nām niṯ rasan bakẖān Binse rog bẖa▫e kali▫ān ||1||
One who (nit) ever (bakhaan) utters/remembers (raam) Divine (naam-u) commands, and obeys them; all his/her (rog) afflictions (binsey) end (bhaey) experiences (kaliaan) happiness. 1.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਣ ਅਗਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਮਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਸਤਾਰ ॥੨॥
Pārbarahm guṇ agam bīcẖār Sāḏẖū sangam hai nisṯār ||2||
(Paarbrahm) the Supreme Being is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension, but can be understood – vision received – by (beechaar) reflecting on ITs (gun) virtues. One gets (nistaar = across night) across life, i.e. is not reborn (sangha-i) with company/with guidance of (saadhoo) the guru. 2.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥ ਗਈ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਨ ਮੀਤ ॥੩॥
Nirmal guṇ gāvhu niṯ nīṯ Ga▫ī bi▫āḏẖ ubre jan mīṯ ||3||
(Nit neet) forever (gaavah-u = sing) praise and emulate (nirmal) the pristine (gun) Divine virtues. This is how (jan = servants) devotees of the Almighty (ubrey) overcome (biaadh = afflictions) vices, my (meet) friends. 3.
ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੦੨॥੧੭੧॥
Man bacẖ karam parabẖ apnā ḏẖi▫ā▫ī Nānak ḏās ṯerī sarṇā▫ī ||4||102||171||
The devotees (dhiaaee) pay attention to/obey (apna = own) the (prabh-u) the Almighty Master in (man = mind) thought, (bach/bachan) word and (kram) deed. They place themselves in (teyri) your (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience, submits fifth Nanak. 4. 102. 171.
Note: The fifth Guru’s son, Hargobind had contracted (seetla) small pox. People suggested to Worship, the goddess Seetla but the Guru prayed to the Almighty instead, and he recovered. This Shabad was recited after his recovery and also refers to the (bharam) delusion of goddess worship.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਕੀਆ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥ ਭਰਮ ਗਏ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਈ ਸੇਵ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri When (gurdeyv) the guru (keeaa = did) gave (pragaas-u) light to (neytr) the eyes, i.e. enlightened the mind. (Bharam) doubts (gaey) left and (seyv = service) invoking the Almighty (bhaee = became, pooran = complete) fructified. 1

ਸੀਤਲਾ ਤੇ ਰਖਿਆ ਬਿਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
Sīṯlā ṯe rakẖi▫ā bihārī Pārbarahm parabẖ kirpā ḏẖārī ||1||
(Bihari = metaphor for God) the Almighty (raakhiaa) saved – child Hargobind – from (seetla) small pox. (Prabh) the Almighty, (Paarbrahm) the Supreme Spirit (kirpa dhaari) bestowed grace. 1.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਸੋ ਜੀਵੈ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ॥੨॥੧੦੩॥੧੭੨॥
Nānak nām japai so jīvai Sāḏẖsang har amriṯ pīvai ||2||103||172||
Says fifth Nanak: One who (japai) remembers/obeys (naam-u) Divine commands, (so) that person (jeevai) lives, i.e. does not fall prey to afflictions. S/he (peevai) drinks (har-i) the Divine (amrit-u) life-giving elixir, i.e. lives by Divine virtues and commands (sadhsang-i) with company/guidance of the guru. 2. 103. 172.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਧਨੁ ਓਹੁ ਮਸਤਕੁ ਧਨੁ ਤੇਰੇ ਨੇਤ ॥ ਧਨੁ ਓਇ ਭਗਤ ਜਿਨ ਤੁਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੇਤ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Ḏẖan oh masṯak ḏẖan ṯere neṯ Ḏẖan o▫e bẖagaṯ jin ṯum sang heṯ ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri (Dhan-u) blessed is (oh) that forehead – which bows to you – and blessed are the (neyt/neytr) eyes (teyrey = your) given by you, o Creator. (dhan-u) blessed are (oey) those (bhagat) devotees (jin) who bear (hryt-u) love (sang-i) for (tum) You. 1.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਸੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Nām binā kaise sukẖ lahī▫ai Rasnā rām nām jas kahī▫ai ||1|| rahā▫o
One (kaisey = how?) can (laheeai = receive) have (sukh-u) peace and comfort (bina) without conformance to (naam) Divine virtues and commands. We should (kaheeai) say (jas-u) praise of (naam) virtues of (raam) the Almighty. 1.

ਤਿਨ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੨॥੧੦੪॥੧੭੩॥
Ŧin ūpar jā▫ī▫ai kurbāṇ Nānak jin japi▫ā nirbāṇ ||2||104||173||
Says Nanak: We should (jaaeeai) be (kurban-u) sacrifice (oopar-i) on, i.e. do everything to follow example of those (jin-i) who (japiaa) keep in mind/obey (nirbaan-u) the pristine Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 2. 104. 173.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਮਸਲਤਿ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ ਤੂਹੈ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Ŧūʼnhai maslaṯ ṯūʼnhai nāl Ŧūhai rākẖahi sār samāl. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri O Almighty, (too’nhai) You alone are my (maslat-i) advisor, i.e. have given awareness of Naam and (too’nhai) You alone are (naal-i) with me. (Toohai) You alone (raakhah-i) protect and (saar-i samaal-i) take care of those who conform to Naam. 1.
ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਨੀ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Aisā rām ḏīn ḏunī sahā▫ī Ḏās kī paij rakẖai mere bẖā▫ī ||1|| rahā▫o
Continuing from the above verse
(Aisa) such is (raam) the Almighty who (sahaae = is helpful) supports both in (deen) the hereafter and (duni = in the world) in life. The Master (rakhai) preserves the honor of (daas = servant) the devotees, (mere) my (bhaaee) brethren. 1.

ਆਗੈ ਆਪਿ ਇਹੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਉ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੨॥
Āgai āp ih thān vas jā kai Āṯẖ pahar man har ka▫o jāpai ||2||
It is (aap-i = self) the Almighty Master (aagai = ahead) in the hereafter and (ja kai) in whose (vas-i) control is (ih-u) this (thaan-u) (aagai= ahead) in the hereafter (ja kai) in whose (vas) control is (ih thaan = this place) who controls life also. (Mann) my mind (jaapai) remembers and obeys (har-i kau) the Almighty (aath = eight x pahr = three hours) twenty four hours of day and night. 2.
ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
Paṯ parvāṇ sacẖ nīsāṇ Jā ka▫o āp karahi furmān ||3||
(Sach-u) truthfulness is (neesaan-u) the identification for receiving (pat-i) the honor of (parvaan) acceptance by the Creator for union with IT-self; but only those souls get it (ja kau) for whom the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (karah-i = makes/gives, phurman-u = order) pass approve. 3.
ਆਪੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੪॥੧੦੫॥੧੭੪॥
Āpe ḏāṯā āp parṯipāl Niṯ niṯ Nānak rām nām samāl ||4||105||174||
The Eternal is (aapey) IT-self (daata = giver of life) the Creator and (aap-i) IT-self (pratipaal-i) takes care. O Nanak, (nit nit) ever (samaal-i = take care) keep in mind/obey (naam-u) commands of (raam) the Creator. 4. 105. 174.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਭਇਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ॥ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਪਾਲੁ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Saṯgur pūrā bẖa▫i▫ā kirpāl Hirḏai vasi▫ā saḏā gupāl ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri When the (poora) perfect (sat guru) true guru (bhaiaa) is (kripaal-u) kind – to guide in understanding Divine virtues and commands – (gupaal = the Sustainer of the universe) the Master (sadaa) ever (vasia) abides in (hirdai) the mind – vision of the Master is received within. 1.
ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵਤ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਮਇਆ ਕਰੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Rām ravaṯ saḏ hī sukẖ pā▫i▫ā Ma▫i▫ā karī pūran har rā▫i▫ā ||1|| rahā▫o
One whom (pooran = complete) the all-pervasive (har-i raaia) Sovereign Master (maiaa kari) blesses; that person (ravat) remembers (raam) the Divine virtues and thus (sad hi) ever (paaia = receives) experiences (sukh-u) peace and happiness. 1.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਗ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਸੋਹਾਗੁ ॥੨॥੧੦੬॥
Kaho Nānak jā ke pūre bẖāg Har har nām asthir sohāg ||2||106||
Says Nanak: One whose (bhaag) destiny, based on past good deeds, (poorey) fructifies; that person conforms to (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) commands of the Almighty; such a person is blessed with (asthir-u = stable) eternal (sohaag) good fortune of achieving union with the Creator. 2. 106.
Note. This Shabad highlights exploitation of gullible people by the priestly class. It takes the example of a Brahmin who emphasizes the virtue in giving in charity to him and coerces people to do so. The Shabad points out that real virtue lies in doing good deeds.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਧੋਤੀ ਖੋਲਿ ਵਿਛਾਏ ਹੇਠਿ ॥ ਗਰਧਪ ਵਾਂਗੂ ਲਾਹੇ ਪੇਟਿ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Ḏẖoṯī kẖol vicẖẖā▫e heṯẖ Garḏẖap vāʼngū lāhe pet ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri the Brahmin (khol-i = opens) unfolds (dhoti) a sheet his waist and (vichhaaey) spreads (heytth-i = below) spreads to sit on it under him when he sits down to eat – so that it does not constrict his eating. He (laahey = lowers down, peytt-i = belly) gulps the food (vaa’ngoo) like a (gardhab) donkey. 1
ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਤੂਤੀ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bin karṯūṯī mukaṯ na pā▫ī▫ai Mukaṯ paḏārath nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai ||1|| rahā▫o
The Brahmin says charity to a Brahmin leads to (mukt-i) salvation; but Mukti from vices is not (paaeeai) attained without (kartooti = actions) good deeds. Mukti is a (padaarath-u = substance) gift that comes (dhiaaeeai) by paying attention/obeying (naam-u) Divine commands. 1.

ਪੂਜਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਕਰਤ ਇਸਨਾਨਾਂ ॥ ਛੁਰੀ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
Pūjā ṯilak karaṯ isnānāʼn Cẖẖurī kādẖ levai hath ḏānā ||2||
The Brahmin displays his religiosity by (pooja) ritual worship, (tilak) mark on his forehead and (isnaana) ritual baths; but in actual practice (kaadhi = takes out, chhuri = dagger) coerces people and (leyvai) receives (daana) charity on his (hath) hand. 2.
ਬੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਜੀਆਂ ਕੁਹਤ ਨ ਸੰਗੈ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
Beḏ paṛai mukẖ mīṯẖī baṇī Jī▫āʼn kuhaṯ na sangai parāṇī ||3||
He (parrai) reads/recites (beyd-u) scriptural texts (meethi) sweet (baani) voice to impress people, but this (praani) mortal does not (sangey) hesitate to (kuht) slaughtering (praani) people, i.e. coercing to give money or gifts. 3.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੈ ॥ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੪॥੧੦੭॥
Kaho Nānak jis kirpā ḏẖārai Hirḏā suḏẖ barahm bīcẖārai ||4||107||
Says fifth Nanak: (Jis-u) one on whom the Creator (dhaarai) bestows (kirpa) grace, that person (beechaarai) reflects on the virtues of (brahm-u) the Creator with (sudh-u) a clean (hirda) mind – driving out other ideas. 4. 107.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਥਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Thir gẖar baishu har jan pi▫āre Saṯgur ṯumre kāj savāre ||1|| rahā▫o
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri O (piaarey) dear (jan) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty, you will (baisah-u) sit/remain in (thir-u) steady (ghar-i = house) state – focused on the Almighty within; (satigur-i) the true guru (savaarey) accomplishes (tumrey) your (kaaj) purposes, i.e. follow the true guru’s guidance to find the Almighty within. 1.

ਦੁਸਟ ਦੂਤ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੀ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Ḏusat ḏūṯ parmesar māre Jan kī paij rakẖī karṯāre ||1||
(Parmeysar) the Supreme Master (maarey = kills) destroys (dustt) the evil doers and (doot) messengers of doom, vices; (kartaarey) the Creator (rakhi) preserves (paij) honor (jan ki) of the devotees, i.e. saves them from vices. 1.
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਸਾਹ ਸਭ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਮਹਾ ਰਸ ਪੀਨੇ ॥੨॥
Bāḏisāh sāh sabẖ vas kar ḏīne Amriṯ nām mahā ras pīne ||2||
The Almighty (kar-i deeney) has made (sabh) all (baadisaah) emperors and (saah) kings subject to (vas-i = control) subject to Naam/Divine commands. Let us (peeney) drink the (maha ras) great elixir of, i.e. keep in mind and conform to (amrit) the life-giving (naam) virtues and commands of the Creator. 2
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇ ਭਜਹੁ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
Nirbẖa▫o ho▫e bẖajahu bẖagvān Sāḏẖsangaṯ mil kīno ḏān ||3||
(Hoey = be, nirbhau = fearless) forget about god and goddesses or superstitions and (bhajah-u) invoke/obey (bhagvaan) the Creator. (Mil-i) joining (saadhsangat-i = company of the guru) the holy congregation (keeno = makes, daan-u = charity) gives awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands. 3.
ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਪਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੪॥੧੦੮॥
Saraṇ pare parabẖ anṯarjāmī Nānak ot pakrī parabẖ su▫āmī ||4||108||
Says fifth Nanak: I (parey) I have placed myself (saran-i = sanctuary) in the care and obedience of the Creator (antarjaami) within, who directs all my actions. I have (pakri = caught) sought (ott) protection of (prabh) the Almighty (suaami) Master, – please impart awareness of, and ability to conform, to Divine virtues and commands. 4. 108.
