ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੩ ਦੁਪਦਾ    ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 4 gẖar 3 ḏupḏā   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Saarag, (dupadaa) of two stanzas each, (ghar-u 3) to be sung to the third beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਕਾਹੇ ਪੂਤ ਝਗਰਤ ਹਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਾਪ ॥ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਜਣੇ ਬਡੀਰੇ ਤੁਮ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਝਗਰਤ ਪਾਪ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kāhe pūṯ jẖagraṯ ha▫o sang bāp.   Jin ke jaṇe badīre ṯum ha▫o ṯin si▫o jẖagraṯ pāp. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (poot) son, (kaahey) why do you (jhagrat hau) quarrel/argue (sang-i) with your (baap) father; it is (paap) a sin to (jhagrat) quarrel with the parents (jin key = whose) whose (janey = born) begotten and (baddeerey) brought up (tum) you (hau) are. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਾ ਤੁਮ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰਤ ਹਉ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਆਪ ॥ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਸੁ ਤਉ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਪ ॥੧॥

Jis ḏẖan kā ṯum garab karaṯ ha▫o so ḏẖan kisėh na āp. Kẖin mėh cẖẖod jā▫e bikẖi▫ā ras ṯa▫o lāgai pacẖẖuṯāp. ||1||

 

(Dhan-u = money) the wealth because (ka) of (jis) which (tum) you (karat = do, garab-u = pride) are proud, (so) that (dhan-u) wealth is not of (kisah-i) anyone’s (aap) own, i.e. is left behind on death for others.

One has to (chhodd-i) leave/give up (ras-u) the love for (bikhiaa = poison) material possessions (mah-i) in (khin) a moment and (jaaey) depart when death comes; (tau) then (pachhutaap) repentance (laagai) comes, i.e. one repents as love for material results in denial of union with God. 1.

 

ਜੋ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹੋਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਜਾਪਹੁ ਜਾਪ ॥ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਤੁਮ ਕਉ ਜਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਤਉ ਜਾਇ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥੨॥੧॥੭॥

Jo ṯumre parabẖ hoṯe su▫āmī har ṯin ke jāpahu jāp.  Upḏes karaṯ Nānak jan ṯum ka▫o ja▫o sunhu ṯa▫o jā▫e sanṯāp. ||2||1||7||

 

(Prabh) the Almighty (jo) who (hotey) is (tumrey) your (suaami) Master here and in the hereafter; (jaapahu) remember and obey (jaap = what is to be remembered) Naam or commands (key) of (tin = that) God – and this includes obedience to parents.

(Jan) humble fourth Nanak (karat = makes) gives this (updeys-u) instruction/guidance (kau) to (tum) you; (jau) if you (sunh-u = listen) comply (tau) then (santaap) suffering (jaaey = shall go) will be obviated. 2. 1. 7.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Saarag (dupadey) with two stanzas each, (ghar-u 5) to be sung to the fifth beat (parrtaal) with variation of beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਜਗਦੀਸਰੋ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੋ ਮਨਮੋਹਨ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਸਭ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Jap man jagannāth jagḏīsro jagjīvano manmohan si▫o parīṯ lāgī mai har har har tek sabẖ ḏinas sabẖ rāṯ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey (jagannaath, jagdeesro) the Master of the world, (jagjeevano = life of the world) the Creator; ever since (mai) I (laagi) developed (preet-i) love (sio) for, i.e. to be in obedience of, (manmohan) the fascinating Master, I take the (tteyk) support of, i.e. conduct myself guided by (har-i, har-i, har-i – thrice) God’s commands in thought, word, and deed, (sabh) every day and (sabh) every (raat-i) night.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਅਨਿਕ ਅਨਿਕ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਸੁਕ ਨਾਰਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕ ਤਵ ਗੁਨ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਗਨਿਨ ਨ ਜਾਤਿ ॥ ਤੂ ਹਰਿ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਤੂ ਹਰਿ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਤੂ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਆਪਨੀ ਭਾਂਤਿ ॥੧॥

Har kī upmā anik anik anik gun gāvaṯ suk nāraḏ barahmāḏik ṯav gun su▫āmī ganin na jāṯ. Ŧū har be▫anṯ ṯū har be▫anṯ ṯū har su▫āmī ṯū āpe hī jānėh āpnī bẖāʼnṯ. ||1||

 

O Almighty, devotees like Suk/Sukhdev and Narada, as also gods (brahmaadik) like Brahma (gaavat) sing (tav) Your (gun) virtues, i.e. obey You in (anik, anik, anik) numerous ways in thought, word and deed; those (na jaat-i) cannot (ganin) be counted.

(Too) You have (beyant-u) no limitations, o (har-i) Almighty, You are (suaami) the Master of all; You (aapey hi) Yourself alone (jaanah-i) know (apni = own) Your (bhaant-i) kind – as to what You are, we can only obey. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟ ਹੀ ਬਸਤੇ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਾਤ ॥ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਲਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਜੈਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਲਲੈ ਸਲਲ ਮਿਲਾਤਿ ॥੨॥੧॥੮॥

Har kai nikat nikat har nikat hī basṯe ṯe har ke jan sāḏẖū har bẖagāṯ. Ŧe har ke jan har si▫o ral mile jaise jan Nānak sallai salal milāṯ. ||2||1||8||

 

Those who (bastey = dwell, nikatt-i = near – thrice) remember God in thought, word and deed; (tey) they are (jan) humble (saadhoo) saints (key) of (har-i) the Almighty, (bhagaat) devotees of God.

(Tey) those/such (jan) devotees of (har-i) God (ral-i = mix, miley = meet) remain absorbed (sio) with (har-i) the Almighty (jaisey) like (salal) water (milaat-i) mixes (salalai) with water, i.e. they become like God, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 2. 1. 8.

ਸਾਰੰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਨਰਹਰੇ ਨਰਹਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮੋਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārang mėhlā 4.   Jap man narhare narhar su▫āmī har sagal ḏev ḏevā sarī rām rām nāmā har parīṯam morā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Man = mind) o human being, (jap-i) remember and obey (narharey narhar = man-lion – metaphor for) the Almighty (suaami) Master, (dev) god of (sagal) all (deyva) gods; (sri) the revered (raam) Almighty, (naama) Naam or virtues and commands of the Almighty, is (mora) my (preetam-u) beloved – for whom I yearn. 1.

ਜਿਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਵਾਜੇ ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਮਥੋਰਾ ॥ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਪ ਗਏ ਸਭਿ ਦੋਖ ਗਏ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਏ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਗਏ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢੇ ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰਾ ॥੧॥

Jiṯ garihi gun gāvṯe har ke gun gāvṯe rām gun gāvṯe ṯiṯ garihi vāje pancẖ sabaḏ vad bẖāg mathorā. Ŧinĥ jan ke sabẖ pāp ga▫e sabẖ ḏokẖ ga▫e sabẖ rog ga▫e kām kroḏẖ lobẖ moh abẖimān ga▫e ṯinĥ jan ke har mār kadẖe pancẖ cẖorā. ||1||

 

(Grih-i) the house/mind/person (jit-u) who (gaavtey) sings/praises (gun) virtues; (gun) virtues (key) of (har-i) God; (gaavtey) sing (gun) virtues of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty; in (tit-u) that (grih-i) house/mind (panch) five types of (sabad = sound) musical instruments (vaajey) play, i.e. that mind ever has joy; that person has (vadd = great) good (bhaag) fortune (mathora) on the forehead/in destiny.

(Sabh-i) all (paap) wrong-doings (gaey) leave the mind of (tinh) that (jan) person, (sabh-i) all (dokh) faults (gaey) leave, (sabh-i) all (rog) maladies namely, (kaam-u) lust, (krodh-u) anger, (lobh-u) greed, (moh-u) worldly attachment and (abhimaan-u) vanity (gaey) leave; (har-i) the Almighty (maar-i) kills and (kaddhey) drives out (panch) the five (chora) thieves – evils which make one oblivious of Naam. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਗਦੀਸੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਧੂ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਬੋਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਪ ਗਵਾਧੂ ॥

Har rām bolhu har sāḏẖū har ke jan sāḏẖū jagḏīs japahu man bacẖan karam har har ārāḏẖū har ke jan sāḏẖū. Har rām bol har rām bol sabẖ pāp gavāḏẖū.

 

O (saadhoo = saints) seekers of (har-i) the Almighty, (bolhu = utter) remember and obey (har-i raam) the all-pervasive Almighty, o (jan = servant) humble seekers of the Almighty; (japahu) remember – remain conscious of – (jagdees-u) the Master of the world (man-i = in mind) in thought, (bachan-i = in word) while speaking and (karam-i = in deed) while acting/doing; (araadhoo) invoke (har-i har-i) the Almighty forever, as (jan) humble (saadhoo = saint) seekers of (har-i) the Almighty.

(Bol-i = utter) praise and obey (har-i raam) the All-pervasive Almighty – in two ways – in thought and deed; so that (sabh-i) all (paap) wrong-doings (gavaadhoo = lose) leave.

 

ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਜਾਗਰਣੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਜਪਿ ਜਗਦੀਸੋੁਰਾ  ॥ ਮਨ ਇਛੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਭੈ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਰਥੁ ਕਾਮ ਮੋਖੁ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਤੋਰਾ ॥੨॥੨॥੯॥

Niṯ niṯ jāgraṇ karahu saḏā saḏā ānanḏ jap jagḏīsorā.  Man icẖẖe fal pāvhu sabẖai fal pāvhu ḏẖaram arath kām mokẖ jan Nānak har si▫o mile har bẖagaṯ ṯorā. ||2||2||9||

 

(Nit nit) forever (karhu = do, jaagaran = keeping awake) remain alert to vices; (jap-i) remember and obey (jagdeesura) the Master of the world, and (sadaa sadaa) forever experience (aanand-u) bliss.

And (paavahu) obtain (phal = fruit) fulfilment of all aspirations (ichhey) wished by (man) the mind; have ability to (dharam-u) being dutiful/obeying God, (arath-u) economic well-being, (kaam-u) fulfilment of desires/aspirations and (mokh-u) freedom from vices in life and from consequential rebirth on death; (jan) the devotees (miley = meet) unite (siau) with (har-i) the Almighty; O (har-i) Almighty (jan) humble fourth Nanak is (tora) Your (bhagat) devotee – please unite me – all devotees with You. 2. 2. 9.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਧੋ ਮਧੁਸੂਦਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਸ੍ਰੀਰੰਗੋ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੋ ਸਤਿ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ ਸਭ ਦੂਖਨ ਕੋ ਹੰਤਾ ਸਭ ਸੂਖਨ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਓ‍ੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 4.   Jap man māḏẖo maḏẖusūḏno har sarīrango parmesaro saṯ parmesaro parabẖ anṯarjāmī.

Sabẖ ḏūkẖan ko hanṯā sabẖ sūkẖan ko ḏāṯā har parīṯam gun gā▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Saarag. O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey (maadho = husband of maaiaa) the Master of the world-play, (madhusoodno = killer of the demon Madhu) destroyer of evil (har-i) Almighty (srirango = playful with Sri – Lakshmi, goddess of wealth) Master of the world, (sat-i) the Eternal (parmeysro) Supreme Master (prabh-u) Master (antarjaami) who knows all minds.

(Gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (preetam) the Beloved Almighty (hanta) destroyer (ko) of (sabh) all (dookhan = pains) suffering, (daataa) giver of (sabh) all (sookhan) comforts. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਹਰਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ਬਸਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਲਿ ਥਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਬਸਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਥਾਨ ਥਾਨੰਤਰਿ ਬਸਤਾ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਨ ਕੋ ਚਾਓ‍ੁ ॥

Har gẖat gẖate gẖat basṯā har jal thale har basṯā har thān thānanṯar basṯā mai har ḏekẖan ko cẖā▫o.

 

(Har-i) the Almighty (basta) dwells (ghatt-i, ghattey, ghatt-i) in all bodies/minds; (har-i) the Almighty dwells (jal-i) in water, (thaley) on/in land, dwells at (har-i) all places and (thaanatar-i) between places; (mai) I (chaau) fondly yearn (deykhan) to have vision (ko) of (har-i) the Almighty.

 

ਕੋਈ ਆਵੈ ਸੰਤੋ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਜਨੁ ਸੰਤੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜਨੁ ਸੰਤੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਿਖਲਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਧੋਵਾ ਪਾਓ‍ੁ ॥੧॥

Ko▫ī āvai sanṯo har kā jan sanṯo merā parīṯam jan sanṯo mohi mārag ḏikẖlāvai. Ŧis jan ke ha▫o mal mal ḏẖovā pā▫o. ||1||

 

I wish (koi) someone (aavai) comes, o (santo) devotees of the Almighty, some (jan = servant) seeker (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty, o (santo) devotees, (meyra) dear (jan-u) devotee of the Almighty, o (santo) seekers, and (dikhlaavai) shows (moh-i) me (maarag-u) the path – to God, I seek company of God’s devotees to follow their example.

I shall (mal-i mal-i) rub and (dhova) wash (paaou) feet of, i.e. humbly serve and follow, (tis-u) that (jan) devotee of the Almighty. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਧਾ ਤੇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਆਨੰਦ ਭਏ ਮੈ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਓ‍ੁ ॥

Har jan ka▫o har mili▫ā har sarḏẖā ṯe mili▫ā gurmukẖ har mili▫ā. Merai man ṯan ānanḏ bẖa▫e mai ḏekẖi▫ā har rā▫o.

 

(Har-i) the Almighty (milia = found) reveals IT-self (kau) to (jan) seekers of (har-i) the Almighty; is (miliaa) is found (tey) with (sardhaa = faith) inner motivation; (har-i) the Almighty (miliaa) is found (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance.

Ever since (mai) I (deykhiaa) saw (raaou) the Sovereign Almighty, there (bhaey) is (aanand) bliss in (meyrai) my (man-i) mind and (tan-i) body, i.e. I am at peace physically and mentally.

 

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਜਗਦੀਸੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ॥ ਮੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੋ ਸਦ ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਓ‍ੁ ॥੨॥੩॥੧੦॥

Jan Nānak ka▫o kirpā bẖa▫ī har kī kirpā bẖa▫ī jagḏīsur kirpā bẖa▫ī. Mai anḏino saḏ saḏ saḏā har japi▫ā har nā▫o. ||2||3||10||

 

(Kirpa) kindness (bhaee) has been bestowed (kau) to (jan) humble fourth Nanak, it (bhaee) is (kirpa) kindness (ki) of the Almighty; is kindness of (jagdeesou) Master of the world; that (mai) I have (sad sad sadaa) forever (japiaa) remembered and obeyed (naaou) Naam or virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty in thought, word and deed – and now enjoy Divine bliss. 2. 3. 10.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਨਿਰਭਉ ॥ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਤਿ ॥ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ॥ ਆਜੂਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ॥ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਅਨਦਿਨੋੁ  ਧਿਆਇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 4.   Jap man nirbẖa▫o.   Saṯ saṯ saḏā saṯ.  Nirvair akāl mūraṯ.   Ājūnī sambẖa▫o. Mere man anḏino ḏẖi▫ā▫e nirankār nirāhārī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Saarag. O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey (nirbhau = without fear – answerable to none) the highest Master; (Sat-i = true) who existed in the past, (sat-i) exists now and shall (sadaa) ever (sat-i) exist.

(Nirvair) without enmity – is against none; (moorat-i = picture) is embodiment of (akaal) deathless-ness and timeless-ness. IT (aajooni) does not take physical form/is not born, (sambhau) is self-created. (Meyrey) my (man) mind, (andino = everyday) ever (dhiaaey) pay attention to virtues and commands of the Almighty who is (nirankaar-u) formless and (nirahaari) does not subsist on food. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਸਿਧ ਜਤੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਪਰਭਵਨ ਕਰਤ ਰਹਤ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਥਾਇ ਪਈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹੋਵਤੁ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

Har ḏarsan ka▫o har ḏarsan ka▫o kot kot ṯeṯīs siḏẖ jaṯī jogī ṯat ṯirath parbẖavan karaṯ rahaṯ nirāhārī. Ŧin jan kī sevā thā▫e pa▫ī jinĥ ka▫o kirpāl hovaṯ banvārī. ||1||

 

(Kott-i) crores of people and (teytees) thirty three (kott-i) crore gods, (sidh) accomplished saints, (jati) those practicing austerities, (jogi) the Yogis (karat = do, parbavan = wandering) go to (teerath) pilgrim centers at (tatt) the river banks to bathe, and (rahat) remain (niraahaari) without food – observe fasts – (kau) to obtain (darsan) sight of (har-i) the Almighty. (Seyva = service) efforts (ki) of (tin) those (jan) persons (paee = is put, thaaey = in place) are successful (kau) to (jin) whom (banvaari = gardener of the vegetation) the Sustainor Almighty is (hovat-u) kind to enable to live in obedience of Divine commands. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਹੋ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਭਗਤ ਭਲੇ ਜੋ ਭਾਵਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਾ ਅੰਗੁ ਕਰੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥੨॥੪॥੧੧॥

Har ke ho sanṯ bẖale ṯe ūṯam bẖagaṯ bẖale jo bẖāvaṯ har rām murārī.  Jinĥ kā ang karai merā su▫āmī ṯinĥ kī Nānak har paij savārī. ||2||4||11||

 

(Tey) those who (ho) become (sant = saints) seekers, i.e. are in obedience, (key) of (har-i) the Almighty, (tey) they are (ootam) sublime persons, (bhaley) good (bhagat) devotees (jo) who (bhaavat = liked) are approved by (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty, (muraari = killer of the demon Mur) the destroyer of evil.

Those (jinh ka) whose (ang-u) side (suaami) the Master (meyra = my) of all (karey = does) takes – in the battle of life, (har-i) the Almighty (savaari) preserves (tinh ki) their (paij) honor – accepts them for union with IT. 2. 4. 11.

Sārag mėhlā 4 paṛ▫ṯāl.   Jap man govinḏ har govinḏ guṇī niḏẖān sabẖ sarisat kā parabẖo mere man har bol har purakẖ abẖināsī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Saarag, (parrtaal) with variation of the beat. O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey (govind-u) the Master of the world, (har-i govind-u) the Almighty Master of the world; (nidhaan-u) treasure (guni) of virtues, (prabho) the Master of (sabh) all (sristt-i) universes; (meyrey) my (man) mind (bol-i = utter) praise (har-i) the Almighty; (har-i) the Almighty is (purakh-u) all-pervasive and (abinaasi) imperishable/Eternal. 1.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਸੋ ਪੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਸੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਮੇਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਖਾਸੀ ॥੧॥

Har kā nām amriṯ har har hare so pī▫ai jis rām pi▫āsī. Har āp ḏa▫i▫āl ḏa▫i▫ā kar melai jis saṯgurū so jan har har amriṯ nām cẖakẖāsī. ||1||

 

(Naam-u) virtues and commands (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty are (amrit-u) a life-giving elixir – they save from succumbing to vices; practice of virtues and commands (harey) of the Almighty Divine is (har-i = dispels vices) purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating; but only (so) that person (peeai) drinks the elixir, i.e. practices Naam, who has (piaasi) thirst/yearning for (raam) the Almighty.

One on (jis-u) whom, (har-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (kar-i) bestows (daiaa) mercy, IT (meylai) causes him/her to meet (satiguru) true guru; (so) that (jan-u = servant) seeker (chakhaasi) drinks (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating (amrit) elixir of Naam, i.e. lives by Naam. 1.

 

ਜੋ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਜਾਸੀ ॥ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਏ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਜਲਿ ਪੀਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੀ

Jo jan sevėh saḏ saḏā merā har hare ṯin kā sabẖ ḏūkẖ bẖaram bẖa▫o jāsī. Jan Nānak nām la▫e ṯāʼn jīvai ji▫o cẖāṯrik jal pī▫ai ṯaripṯāsī. ||2||5||12||

 

(Jan) the persons (jo) who are (sad sadaa) forever (seyvah-i = serve) in obedience to (har-i har-ey) the Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all; (sabh-u) every one (tin ka) of their (bharam-u) delusion that causes straying and resultant (bhau) fear of retribution (jaasi = goes) is obviated.

Says fourth Nanak: (Jan-u) a person (jeevai = lives) does not fall prey to vices (taa-n) only then if s/he (laey = utters) practices/drinks Naam or Divine virtues and commands, (jio) like (chaatrik-u) the rain-bird is (triptaasi) satiated (jal-i) with water (peeai = drinking) falling in its mouth. 2. 5. 12.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raag Saarag. O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey (siri) the revered (raam-u) Almighty; (raam) the all-pervasive (raam-u) Almighty (ramat) is present everywhere – can be invoked everywhere.

(Raam-u) the Almighty is (sat-i = true) eternal and (sat-i = true) ever the same; o (bhaeeaa) brother/dear, (sad) ever (bolhu = utter) praise and obey (raam) the all-pervasive (raam-u) Almighty; (raam-u) the Almighty (rav-i rahiaa) pervades everywhere and (sarbagey) knows everything – as IT is ever watching.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਰਾਮੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਭੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਭਤੁ ਜਗੇ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੧॥

Rām āpe āp āpe sabẖ karṯā rām āpe āp āp sabẖaṯ jage. Jis āp kirpā kare merā rām rām rām rā▫e so jan rām nām liv lāge. ||1||

 

(Raam-u) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self created (aap-i) the self; is (aapey) IT-self (karta) the Creator of (sabh-u) every thing/one ; (raam-u) the Almighty is (aapey aap-i aapi – three times) is IT-self present in water, on/in land and in space, in (sabhat) the whole (jagey) world.

One on (jis-u) whom (raam raam raam) the all-pervasive Almighty (raaey) Master (meyra) of all (kripa karey) is kind; (so) that (jan-u) person (laagey) pays (liv) attention to living by (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty. 1.

 

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਜੋ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਅਗੇ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾ ਅੰਗੁ ਕੀਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਦੁਸਮਨ ਦੂਖ ਗਏ ਸਭਿ ਭਗੇ ॥੨॥੬॥੧੩॥

Rām nām kī upmā ḏekẖhu har sanṯahu jo bẖagaṯ janāʼn kī paṯ rākẖai vicẖ kalijug age. Jan Nānak kā ang kī▫ā merai rām rā▫e ḏusman ḏūkẖ ga▫e sabẖ bẖage. ||2||6||13||

 

O (santahu = saints) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty, (deykhahu) see (upma = praise) virtue/efficacy of practice of Naam of Raam; (jo) which (raakhai) preserves (pat-i) the honor of (bhagat = devotee, janaa-n = persons) the devotees (vich-i) in (agey) the fire of (kalijug) the age of conflict, i.e. helps them to overcome temptations in the world-play.

(Raam) the Almighty (raaey) Master (meyrai = my) of all has always (keeaa = done/taken, ang-u = side) helped (jan) the devotees and (sabh-i) all their (dusman) enemies/vices and resultant (dookh) distress (bhagey = run, gaey = go away) are banished, says fourth Nanak. 2. 6. 13.
