ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ਰਾਗੁ ਸਾਰੰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.  Rāg sārang mėhlā 9.

 

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance. Composition of the ninth Guru in Raga Saarag.

 

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ ਕਾਂ ਕੀ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har bin ṯero ko na sahā▫ī.  Kāʼn kī māṯ piṯā suṯ baniṯā ko kāhū ko bẖā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O creature, (ko na) none is (teyro) your (sahaaee) helper (bin-u) except (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. only leading life by commands of the Almighty can help in life and when account of deeds is taken after death, and their consequences are decided by the Divine.

 (Kaa’n ki) whose (maat) mother, (pitaa) father, (sut) sons and (banita) wife are the relatives and (ko) who is (kaahoo = who, ko = of) whose (bhaaee) brother, i.e. all relationships end with death – they are not there to help when needed. 1.

 (Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect. 

 

ਧਨੁ ਧਰਨੀ ਅਰੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਸਗਰੀ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਅਪਨਾਈ ॥ ਤਨ ਛੂਟੈ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਕਹਾ ਤਾਹਿ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥੧॥

Ḏẖan ḏẖarnī ar sampaṯ sagrī jo māni▫o apnā▫ī.  Ŧan cẖẖūtai kacẖẖ sang na cẖālai kahā ṯāhi laptā▫ī. ||1||

 

(Dhan-u) wealth, (dharni) land (ar-u) and (sagri/sagli) all (sampat-i) belongings (jo) which you (maanio) consider your (apnaaee) own:

(Kachh-u na) nothing (chaalai) goes (sang-i) with the soul when it (chhoottai) leaves (tan) the body; then (kahaa) why are you (lapttaaee = clinging) attached with (taah-i) them?

 

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੁਚਿ ਨ ਬਢਾਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਤ ਜਗਤ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਰੈਨਾਈ ॥੨॥੧॥

Ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl saḏā ḏukẖ bẖanjan ṯā si▫o rucẖ na badẖā▫ī.  Nānak kahaṯ jagaṯ sabẖ mithi▫ā ji▫o supnā rainā▫ī. ||2||1||

 

The Almighty is (daiaal) kind to (deen) the poor/hapless; IT (sadaa) ever (bhanjan = destroyer) ameliorates (dukh) distress; you have not (baddhaaee = increased) developed (ruch-i) inclination (sio) for conducting yourself with commands of (ta) that beneficent Master.

(Kahat) says ninth Nanak: (Sabh) every-thing/one in (jagat) the world is (mithiaa = false) impermanent/transitory (jiau) like (supna) the dream (rainaaee) at night – so do not get attached to them. 2. 1.

ਸਾਰੰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥ ਕਹਾ ਮਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਲਪਟਾਹੀ ॥ ਯਾ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārang mėhlā 9.  Kahā man bikẖi▫ā si▫o laptāhī.  Yā jag mėh ko▫ū rahan na pāvai ik āvahi ik jāhī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the ninth Guru in Raga Saarang. O (man = mind) human being, (kahaa/kaahey) why are you (lapttaahi) clinging/attached to (bikhiaa) perishable persons and things.

(Koo-oo na = not any) no one (paavai) gets (rahan-u) to stay permanently (mah-i) in (ya) this (jag) world; (ik-i = one type) some (aavah-i = come) are being born and (ik-i) some (jaahi = go) dying at any point of time – and this goes on – so do not get attached to relatives and belongings. 1.

 (Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect. 

 

ਕਾਂ ਕੋ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਕਾਂ ਕੀ ਕਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਹੀ ॥ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਦਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

Kāʼn ko ṯan ḏẖan sampaṯ kāʼn kī kā si▫o nehu lagāhī. Jo ḏīsai so sagal bināsai ji▫o bāḏar kī cẖẖāhī. ||1||

 

(Kaa’n = who, ko = of) whose (tan-u) body, (dhan-u) wealth and (kaa-n ki) whose (sampat-i) belongings are the things and with (ka) what one (lagaahi) bears (neyhu = love) attached when the body dies?

None: (Jo) whatever (deesai) is visible (sagal) all (so) that (binaasai) perishes (jio) like (chhaahi) the shade of (baadar) a cloud is not permanent. 1.

 

ਤਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਗਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਛਿਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥੨॥

Ŧaj abẖimān saraṇ sanṯan gahu mukaṯ hohi cẖẖin māhī. Jan Nānak bẖagvanṯ bẖajan bin sukẖ supnai bẖī nāhī. ||2||2||

 

(Taj-i) give up (abhimaan-u) pride and (gahu = hold) take (saran-i) sanctuary, i.e. place yourself under guidance of (santan) seekers of the Almighty and you will (hoh-i) become (mukat-i) free of attachments (maahi) in (chhin/khin) a moment.

Remember, one cannot get (sukh-u) peace (bhi) even in (supnai) a dream (bin-u) without (bahjan) praising and emulating virtues of (bhagvant = master of destiny) the Almighty – by which one commits no vices -, says (jan) humble ninth Nanak. 2. 2.

ਸਾਰੰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥ ਕਹਾ ਨਰ ਅਪਨੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਸਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਰਾਮ ਸਰਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārang mėhlā 9.  Kahā nar apno janam gavāvai. Mā▫i▫ā maḏ bikẖi▫ā ras racẖi▫o rām saran nahī āvai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the ninth Guru in Raga Saarang. I wonder (kahaa) why (nar = person) the human being (gavaavai = loses) wastes (apno = own) his/her (janam-u) human birth – the opportunity to attin union with the Almighty?

S/he remains (rachio = engrossed) lost (mad-i = intoxication) in pride of (maaiaa) wealth and (ras-i) in pleasures of (bikhiaa) vices and does not (aavai) come (saran-i) in sanctuary of, i.e. does not live by commands of, (raam) the Almighty – told to the soul and which facilitate union. 1.

 (Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect. 

 

ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਹੈ ਸੁਪਨੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਾ ਲੋਭਾਵੈ ॥ ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

Ih sansār sagal hai supno ḏekẖ kahā lobẖāvai.  Jo upjai so sagal bināsai rahan na ko▫ū pāvai. ||1||

 

(Sagal = all) everything in (ihu) this (sansaar-u) world is (supno) a dream; (kahaa) why is s/he (lobhaavai) attracted (deykh-i) on seeing them?

S/he should realize that (jo) whatever (upjai) is created/born (sagal) all (so) that (binaasai) is perishable; (na ko-oo) no one including him/her-self, (paavai) gets to (rahan-u) stay here forever. 1.

 

ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਆਪੁ ਬੰਧਾਵੈ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਊ ਜਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੩॥

Mithi▫ā ṯan sācẖo kar māni▫o ih biḏẖ āp banḏẖāvai. Jan Nānak so▫ū jan mukṯā rām bẖajan cẖiṯ lāvai. ||2||3||

 

S/he (kar-i = make, maanio = believe) thinks (mithiaa = false/impermanent) the perishable (tan-u) body (saacho = true) forever; (ih-u) this (bidh-i) way s/he (bandhaavai) binds (aap-u) the self, i.e. gets attached to the body and other things.

(So-oo) that (jan-u) person remains (mukta) free from attachment who (laavai) applies (chit-u) the mind t0 (bhajan) praising and emulating virtues of (raam) the Almighty, says (jan) humble ninth Nanak. 2. 3.

ਸਾਰੰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥ ਮਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇਓ ॥

Sārang mėhlā 9.  Man kar kabhū na har gun gā▫i▫o.

 

Composition of the ninth Guru in Raga Saarang. I have (kabahoo na) never (kar-i = with, man = mind) sincerely tried to (gaaio = sang) praise and live by (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty.

ਬਿਖਿਆਸਕਤ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਕੀਨੋ ਅਪਨੋ ਭਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bikẖi▫āskaṯ rahi▫o nis bāsur kīno apno bẖā▫i▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

I (keeno = do) have acted by (apno) own (bhaaio) will and thus (rahio) remained (bikhiaasakt) attached with vices (nis-i) night and (baasur) day. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect. 

 

ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਨਿਓ ਨਹਿ ਕਾਨਨਿ ਪਰ ਦਾਰਾ ਲਪਟਾਇਓ ॥ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਤ ਸਮਝਿਓ ਨਹ ਸਮਝਾਇਓ ॥੧॥

Gur upḏes suni▫o nėh kānan par ḏārā laptā▫i▫o. Par ninḏā kāran baho ḏẖāvaṯ samjẖi▫o nah samjẖā▫i▫o. ||1||

 

I (nah-i) have not (sunio) listened (kaanan-i) with ears, i.e. paid attention to, (updeys-u) guidance of (gur) the guru and (lapttiaaio = cling) got involved with (par) others’ (daara) women.

I (bahu = a lot, dhaavat = run) am ever running around (kaaran-i) for (ninda) slander of, i.e. to cause harm to, (par) others; and do not (samjhio = understand) transform myself (samjhaaio = causing to understand) with guidance. 1.

 

ਕਹਾ ਕਹਉ ਮੈ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਓ ॥ ਕਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਅਉਗਨ ਮੋ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਸਰਨਾਇਓ ॥੨॥੪॥੩॥੧੩॥੧੩੯॥੪॥੧੫੯॥

Kahā kaha▫o mai apunī karnī jih biḏẖ janam gavā▫i▫o. Kahi Nānak sabẖ a▫ugan mo mėh rākẖ leho sarnā▫i▫o. ||2||4||3||13||139||4||159||

 

 (Kahaa) what do (mai) I (kahau) say of (apuni = own) my (karni = doing) conduct, (bidh-i = way) by (jih) which I (gavaaio = lost) am wasting (janam-u) human birth/life?

(Kah-i) say/prey o ninth Nanak: O Almighty, I have (sabh) all (augan) faults (mah-i) in (mo) me; but have realized and (sarnaaio = came to sanctuary) placed myself in Your care and obedience, please (raakh-i leyho) take me in Your care. 2. 4. 3. 13. 139. 4. 159.
