ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
Salok mėhlā 5 Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.
(Slok) verses (mahla 5) by the fifth Guru. Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator, who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.
ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਨ ਮੋੜੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਿਞਾਤਾ ਸਾਈ ॥ ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
Raṯe se▫ī jė mukẖ na moṛaʼnniĥ jinĥī siñāṯā sā▫ī. Jẖaṛ jẖaṛ pavḏe kacẖe birhī jinĥā kār na ā▫ī. ||1||
(Seyee) only those (jinhi) who (sinjnaata) recognize (saaee/saa’nee) the Master present within and everywhere outside, (ratey) are imbued with love; they are those (jinnhi) who do not (morra’nnh-i) turn away their (mukh-u) face, i.e. are ever conscious of, and obedient to, the Almighty.
Those (jinhaa) who (na aae = does not come) do not know/understand (kaar-i = task) Divine commands show (kachey) false/pretentious (birahee) yearning and (pavdey) keep (jharr-i jharr-i) falling like tree-leaves due to wind, i.e. get swayed by other ideas.
ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ ॥ ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
Ḏẖaṇī vihūṇā pāt patambar bẖāhī seṯī jāle. Ḏẖūṛī vicẖ ludanḏ▫ṛī sohāʼn Nānak ṯai sah nāle. ||2||
A loving wife (vihoona = without) separated from (dhanee) the husband (jaaley) burns (paatt pattambar) silk clothes (seytee) with (bhaahee) fire, i.e. a seeker is uncomfortable until s/he experiences presence of the Almighty.
S/he says: I (sohaa’n) feel good (luddandrre) rolling (vich-i) in (dhoorree) dust, i.e. being at the feet, (naaley = with) in company of (tai) You, my (sah) Master/Almighty-spouse, entreats fifth Nanak. 2.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥ ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
Gur kai sabaḏ arāḏẖī▫ai nām rang bairāg. Jīṯe pancẖ bairā▫ī▫ā Nānak safal mārū ih rāg. ||3||
(Aaraadheeai) invoking the Almighty (sabad-i) with words (kai) of (gur) the guru, i.e. with the guru’s guidance, creates (bairaag-u) yearning for the Almighty and (rang-i) love/obedience (naam-i) to Naam/Divine commands.
Singing in raga Maroo creates a celebratory as well as romantic mood. (Panch) the five (bairaaeeaa = antagonists) vices – lust, anger, greed, worldly attachment and vanity keep one away from the Almighty, then singing in (ih-u) this Maaroo (raag-u) raga is (saphal) fruitful, says fifth Nanak. 3.
ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਤ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ॥ ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥
Jāʼn mūʼn ik ṯa lakẖ ṯa▫o jiṯī pinṇe ḏar kiṯ▫ṛe. Bāmaṇ birthā ga▫i▫o jannam jin kīṯo so visre. ||4||
(Jaa’n) if (moo’n) I have (ik-u) one Almighty to look to, and (taa = then) in comparison (tau) you a lakh (dar-i) houses (jitee) where to (pinaney) beg from (kitrrey) numerous people.
O (baaman-u) Brahmin, your (jana’mm-u) human birth (gaio = going) is passing (birtha) in vain, as you (visrey) have forgotten the Creator (jin-i) who (keeto = made) created you. 4.
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
Soraṯẖ so ras pījī▫ai kabhū na fīkā ho▫e. Nānak rām nām gun gā▫ī▫ah ḏargėh nirmal so▫e. ||5||
Soratth ragini creates a light and cheerful mood. When we (peejeeai) drink (so) that (ras-u) elixir, i.e. sing praises of the Almighty in Soratth ragini, it (kabahoo na) never (hoey) gets (pheekaa = insipid) stale, i.e. one is never disappointed praising the Almighty and emulating Divine virtues.
We should (gaaeeah-i = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (raam) the Almighty; with this one receives (nirmal = clean, soey = fame) glorification (dargah) in Divine court, says fifth Nanak. 5.
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰਈ ॥ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
Jo parabẖ rakẖe āp ṯin ko▫e na mār▫ī. Anḏar nām niḏẖān saḏā guṇ sār▫ī.
(Koey na) no one can (maaraee) kill (tin) those (jo) whom (prabh-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (rakhey) protects, i.e. one whom the Almighty gives the strength to remember Naam/Divine virtues and commands s/he does not fall prey to temptations. S/he has (nidhaan-u) the treasure of awareness of (naam-u) Naam/Divine virtues and commands (andar-i) within and (sadaa) ever (saaraee) keeps in mind (gun) virtues of the Almighty – which protects from temptations.
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ ॥ ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਉਤਾਰਈ ॥
Ėkā tek agamm man ṯan parabẖ ḏẖār▫ī. Lagā rang apār ko na uṯāra▫ī.
S/he (dhaaraee) takes (tteyk) support of (eyka) the One Almighty alone who is (aga’mm) beyond reach/comprehension, i.e. is the highest Master, (man-i = in mind) thoughts and (tan-i = in body) actions, – thinks and conducts the self by Naam/Divine virtues and commands.
S/he (lagaa = dyed) is imbued with (rang-u) the colour/attributes of (apaar-u) the Infinite, which (ko na = not any) no one can (utaaraee) remove, i.e. s/he is steadfast in devotion.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥
Gurmukẖ har guṇ gā▫e sahj sukẖ sār▫ī. Nānak nām niḏẖān riḏai ur hār▫ī. ||6||
(Gurmukh-i) one who is guided by the guru (gaaey = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty and (saaraee) experiences (sukh-u) peace (sahj-i) steadfastly. S/he (haaraee) wears garland/keeps (nidhaan-u) treasure of Naam (ur-i ridai) in mind, says fifth Nanak. 6.
ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ ॥ ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
Kare so cẖanga mān ḏuyī gaṇaṯ lāhi. Apṇī naḏar nihāl āpe laihu lā▫e.
O human being, (maan-i) accept whatever the Almighty (karey) does as (changaa) good for you; (laah-i) remove (doojee) other (ganat) count, i.e. stop counting other people for no one can do better.
O Almighty, please bestow (apnee) Your (nihaal-i = making happy) blessed (nadar-i = sight) grace to (laih-u laaey = engage) keep me in faith.
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
Jan ḏeh maṯī upḏes vicẖahu bẖaram jā▫e. Jo ḏẖur likẖi▫ā lekẖ so▫ī sabẖ kamā▫e.
Please (deyh-u = give) impart (updeys = instruction) awareness (matee) to the mind so that (bharam-u) doubt (jaaey = goes) is removed (vichahu) from within the mind, i.e. I should have no doubt about the fact that (sabh) everyone (kamaaey) acts according to (soee) that (leykh-u = writing) command (jo) which (likhiaa = written) ordained, (dhur-i = at source) by the Almighty.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
Sabẖ kacẖẖ ṯis ḏai vas ḏūjī nāhi jā▫e. Nānak sukẖ anaḏ bẖa▫e parabẖ kī man rajā▫e. ||7||
(Sabh-u kachh-u) everything is (vas-i = in capability) in hands (dai) of (tis = that) the Almighty, there is no (doojee = second) other (jaaey = place) authority.
(Sukh) peace and (anad) happiness (bhaey = happen) are experienced (ma’nn-i) by accepting (rajaaey) will/commands (ki) of (prabh) the Almighty, – because one cannot escape it any way – says fifth Nanak. 7.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
Gur pūrā jin simri▫ā se▫ī bẖa▫e nihāl. Nānak nām arāḏẖaṇā kāraj āvai rās. ||8||
(Jin) those who (simriaa) remember/follow (poora) the perfect (gur-u) guru, (sey) they (bhaey) are (nihaal) happy, i.e. their wishes of finding God/attaining peace are fulfilled. The guru teaches (araadhna) to keep in mind (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands, by which (kaaraj-u = purpose) every objective (aavai raas-i) is fulfilled, says fifth Nanak. 8.
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
Pāpī karam kamāvḏe karḏe hā▫e hā▫e. Nānak ji▫o mathan māḏẖāṇī▫ā ṯi▫o mathe ḏẖaram rā▫e. ||9||
(Paapee) transgressors – who disobey God and the guru – (kamaavdey) commit wrong (karam) deeds – achieve nothing, remain restless and (kardey = do, haaey haaey = groaning) cry in agony. (Dhram raaey) the metaphoric judge in Divine court (mathey) churns them (tio) the way (jio) as (maadhaaneeaa) churning implements (mathan-i) churn – curd to obtain butter, – or oil extracting machines grind oil-seeds to obtain oil, – they are denied union with the Almighty and made to go through cycles of births and deaths, says fifth Nanak. 9
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
Nām ḏẖi▫ā▫in sājnā janam paḏārath jīṯ. Nānak ḏẖaram aise cẖavėh kīṯo bẖavan punīṯ. ||10||
On the other hand, (saajnaa = friends) those who (dhiaain-i) pay attention to (naam-u) Naam, i.e. emulate Divine virtues and obey Divine commands, they (jeet-i) win (padaarath-u) substance, i.e. overcome temptations and find the Almighty within.
To them (dharam) Dharam Raaey (chavai) says (aisey) thus: “You have (keeto) made my (bhavan-u) house/place (puneet) purified, i.e. pays respect to them and honourably leads them to the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 10.
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
Kẖubẖ▫ṛī kuthā▫e miṯẖī galaṇ kumanṯarī▫ā. Nānak se▫ī ubre jinā bẖāg mathāhi. ||11||
One who finds (kumantreeaa) evil instruction/counsel (mitthee) sweet/likeable, (khubhrree) gets stuck in/falls prey to, in (kuthaaey = bad place) the quagmire, i.e. get entangled with temptations – and remains restless.
(Seyee) those (jinaa) who have (bhaag-u) good fortune written (mathaah-i) on forehead, i.e. who are bestowed Divine grace to find the guru, they obey Naam, and (ubrey) rise above/overcome temptations, – find God within and be at peace, says fifth Nanak. 11.
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧੨॥
Suṯ▫ṛe sukẖī savaʼnniĥ jo raṯe sah āpṇai. Parem vicẖẖohā ḏẖaṇī sa▫o aṯẖe pahar lavaʼnniĥ. ||12||
Those (jo) who (ratey) are imbued with love of (aapnai = own) their (sah) Master, i.e. the Almighty – they live by Naam – shun transgressions and – (sava’nnh-i) sleep/remain (sutrreay = asleep) effortlessly/naturally (sukhee) in peace, i.e. experience the Almighty within all the time.
But those (vichhohaa = separation) bereft of (preym) love (sio) for (dhanee) the Master, – they commit transgressions, are ever apprehensive of consequences and (lava’nnh-i) groan (atthey = all eight x pahar = three hour periods) twenty four hours of day and night, i.e. experience pangs of separation from God all the time. 12.
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
Suṯ▫ṛe asaʼnkẖ mā▫i▫ā jẖūṯẖī kārṇe. Nānak se jāgaʼnniĥ jė rasnā nām ucẖārṇe. ||13||
(Asankh) countless people are (sutrrey = asleep) inebriated (kaarney = for the sake of) by entanglements with (jhootthee = false/impermanent) the transitory world-play of relations, wealth and so on – and thus fall prey to temptations.
On the other hand, those (j-i) who (uchaarney) utter with (rasna) the tongue – and keep in mind –, Naam/Divine virtues and commands, (sey) they (jaaga’nn-i) are awake/alert not to succumb to temptations, says fifth Nanak. 13.
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
Marig ṯisnā pekẖ bẖulṇe vuṯẖe nagar ganḏẖarab. Jinī sacẖ arāḏẖi▫ā Nānak man ṯan fab. ||14||
People (bhulney) are misled (peykh-i) seeing (mrig = deer, tisna/trisna = thirst) mirage in the desert, i.e. imaginary images like (vutthey) living in (nagar = town) a habitat (gandhrab) in space.
Those (jinee) who (aradhiaa) remember (sach-u = truth) Naam/Divine virtues and commands, their (mani = mind) thoughts and (tan-i = body) actions are (phab) befitting a human being, says fifth Nanak. 14.
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
Paṯiṯ uḏẖāraṇ pārbarahm samrath purakẖ apār.
(Apaar-u) the Infinite (purakh-u) all-pervasive (paarbrahm-u) Supreme Being is (sa’mmrath) Omnipotent; IT (udhaaran) lifts those (patit) fallen to vices.

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥
Jisahi uḏẖāre nānkā so simre sirjaṇhār. ||15||
One whom the Almighty (udhaarey) lifts above temptations, (so) that person (simrey) remembers/obeys (sirjanhaar-u) the Creator – and does not fall prey to vices, says fifth Nanak. 15.
ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਵੀਂ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਹਣਿ ਲੁੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੰਦੜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
Ḏūjī cẖẖod kuvātaṛī ikas sa▫o cẖiṯ lā▫e. Ḏūjai bẖāvīʼn nānkā vahaṇ luṛĥaʼnḏaṛī jā▫e. ||16||
O human being, (chhodd-i) leave (doojee = second) other (kuvaattrree = evil path) ideas and (laaey = attach) dedicate (chit-u) the mind (sau) to (ikas-u) the one path of living by Naam.
Those following (doojai) other (bhaavee’n) ideas/distractions (lurrhandrree/rurrhdee jaaey) are washed (vahan-i) downstream, i.e. fall prey to vices, says fifth Nanak. 16.
ਤਿਹਟੜੇ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੜੇ ਪਾਸਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
Ŧihṯaṛe bājār sa▫uḏā karan vaṇjāri▫ā. Sacẖ vakẖar jinī laḏi▫ā se sacẖṛe pāsār. ||17||
(Vanjaariaa) the traders (karan-i) do (sauda) business in (baajaar/bazar) in the market with (tihattrrey) three types of shops, i.e. the creatures conduct themselves by three attributes of ego, namely Tamas = inertia/ignorance, Rajas = passion/ambition and Sattva = good deeds like rituals – they cannot attain emancipation from the world-play.
Those (jinee) who (ladiaa = load) buy (vakhar-u) the merchandise of (sach) truth, i.e. conduct themselves by Naam/Divine virtues and commands, (sey) their (paasaar = expanse) activities are (sachrrey) truthful, i.e. truly obey the Almighty. 17.
ਪੰਥਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਗਵਾਰਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਉਦੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਅੰਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
Panthā parem na jāṇ▫ī bẖūlī firai gavār. Nānak har bisrā▫e kai pa▫uḏe narak anḏẖ▫yār. ||18||
The humankind does not (jaanaee = know) practice (panthaa) the path of (preym) love, i.e. obedience to the Creator; (gavaar-i) being uninformed it (phirai) goes about, i.e. acts (bhooli) in delusion.
They (bisraaeykai) forget commands of (har-i) the Almighty – commit vices and (paudey) are put in (andhyaar) dark (narak-i) hell, i.e. cannot unite with the Almighty, and are put in cycles of births and deaths, says fifth Nanak. 18.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾਂ ਦੰਮ ॥ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮਿ ॥੧੯॥
Mā▫i▫ā manhu na vīsrai māʼngai ḏammāʼn ḏamm. So parabẖ cẖiṯ na āvī Nānak nahī karamm. ||19||
Thoughts of making (maaiaa) money are not (veesrai) forgotten (manahu) from the mind of the human being; s/he (maangai) asks, i.e. s/he works (da’mmaa da’mm) all the time to get it.
But (so) that (prabh-u) Almighty – who gives the wealth – does not (aavaee) come his/her (chit-i) mind, because s/he has not performed (kara’mm-i) this act in the past, i.e. is not in his/her nature, says fifth Nanak. 19.
ਤਿਚਰੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਥੁੜੀਂਦੋ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ॥ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਖਰਚਿ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੨੦॥
Ŧicẖar mūl na thuṛīʼnḏo jicẖar āp kirpāl. Sabaḏ akẖut bābā nānkā kẖāhi kẖaracẖ ḏẖan māl. ||20||
(Jichar-u) as long (aap-i = self) the Almighty is (kripaal-u) kind, (tichar-u) until then (mool-i) investment capital does not (thurree’ndo) exhaust, i.e. one does not forget Naam/Divine virtues and commands.
(Sabad-u = word) Naam/Divine commands are (dhan-u = wealth, maal-u = belogings) a wealth which is (akhutt) inexhaustible, by (khaah-i = eating) using and (kaharach-i = spending) sharing with others, o (baaba) dear, say fifth Nanak. 20.
ਖੰਭ ਵਿਕਾਂਦੜੇ ਜੇ ਲਹਾਂ ਘਿੰਨਾ ਸਾਵੀ ਤੋਲਿ ॥ ਤੰਨਿ ਜੜਾਂਈ ਆਪਣੈ ਲਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਟੋਲਿ ॥੨੧॥
Kẖanbẖ vikāʼnḏ▫ṛe je lahāʼn gẖinnā sāvī ṯol. Ŧann jaṛāʼn▫ī āpṇai lahāʼn so sajaṇ tol. ||21||
(Jey) if I (lahaa’n) find (khambh) feathers (vikaandrrey) on sale, then I shall (ghinaa’n) take them with money (tol-i) weighing (saavee) equal to their weight, says a yearning soul.
I shall (jarraa’nee) have them imbedded to (ta’nn-i) body, and fly to (lahaa’n ttol-i) search out (su = that) the Almighty (sajan-u) friend. 21.
ਸਜਣੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੈ ਸਾਹੁ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆ ਸੋਹੀਐ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
Sajaṇ sacẖā pāṯisāhu sir sāhāʼn ḏai sāhu. Jis pās bahiṯẖi▫ā sohī▫ai sabẖnāʼn ḏā vesāhu. ||22||
The Almighty (sajan-u) friend is (sachaa) the Eternal (paatsaah-u) Sovereign monarch who is (saah-u) the Master (sir-i = over the head) over (saahaa’n) kings.
(Bahitthiaa) sitting (paas-i) with (jis-u) whom one looks good, i.e. true glory is to be accepted for union with the Almighty; (veysaah-u) mainstay/Master (da) of (sabhnaa’n) all. 22.
