ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਸਭ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Gur kā sabaḏ rākẖ man māhi. Nām simar cẖinṯā sabẖ jāhi. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Raakh-u) keep (sabad-u = word) guidance of (gur) the guru (maah-i) in (man) mind, to (simar-i) remember/obey (naam-u) Divine commands; (sabh) all (chinta) anxiety shal (jaah-i) leave. 1.
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਮਾਰੈ ਰਾਖੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bin bẖagvanṯ nāhī an ko▫e. Mārai rākẖai eko so▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.
There is (naahi koey = not any) none (bin) without (bhagwant = who has fortune) God, the Master of destiny, – who can do anything – (Soey = only that) IT alone can (maarai) protect or (raakhai) protect (maarai raakhai) protect and destroy. 1.

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਜਪਿ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
Gur ke cẖaraṇ riḏai ur ḏẖār. Agan sāgar jap uṯrėh pār. ||2||
(Ur-i dhaar-i) keep (charan = feet) directions of (gur) the guru (ridai) in mind. You can (utrah-i) land on (paar-i) far shore of (saagar-u) the ocean of (agan-i) fire, i.e. overcome vices in the world-play, by its (jap-i) remembrance/compliance. 2.
ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਇ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
Gur mūraṯ si▫o lā▫e ḏẖi▫ān. Īhā ūhā pāvahi mān. ||3||
One who (laaey) focuses (dhiaan-u) attention (siau) on (moorat-i = form) example of (gur) the guru to live by Naam/Divine commands, (paavah-i) receives (maan-u) honour (eehaa = here) in life and (oohaa = there) in the hereafter. 3.
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਮਿਟੇ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬੧॥੧੩੦॥
Sagal ṯi▫āg gur sarṇī ā▫i▫ā. Mite anḏese Nānak sukẖ pā▫i▫ā. ||4||61||130||
Since I (tiaag-i) gave up (sagal) all other avenues and (aaiaa) came to (sarni = sanctuary) care and obedience of (gu) the guru. My (andeysey) apprehensions (mittey = effaced) have ended and I (paaiaa) experience (sukh-u) peace, says fifth Nanak. 4. 61. 130.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Simrat) by remembrance/obedience of (jis-u) which (sabh-u) every (dookh-u) grief (jaaey) leaves and (ratan-u = jewel) the valuable awareness of (naam-u) Divine commands (aaey) comes and (vasai) abides (man-i) in mind. 1.
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਸਨ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jap man mere govinḏ kī baṇī. Sāḏẖū jan rām rasan vakẖāṇī. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (jap-i) remember/obey (baani = words) praises of (govind) the Master of the world. (Saadhoo jan = saints) the seekers of (raam-u) the Almighty (vakhaani = utter) have it on their (rasan) tongues. 1.

ਇਕਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
Ikas bin nāhī ḏūjā ko▫e. Jā kī ḏarisat saḏā sukẖ ho▫e. ||2||
There (naahi koey = not any) none (bin-u) except (ikas-u) the One Almighty; with (ja ki) whose (dristt-I = sight) grace one (sadaa = ever (hoey) experiences (sukh-u) peace. 2.
ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਸਖਾ ਕਰਿ ਏਕੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਖਰ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਲੇਖੁ ॥੩॥
Sājan mīṯ sakẖā kar ek. Har har akẖar man mėh lekẖ. ||3||
(Kar-i) make commands of (eyk-u) the One Almighty your (saajan-u) companion and (sakhaa) friend, as this alone can help. (Leykh-u) write/imbed (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (akhar = word) Divine commands (mah-i) in (man) the mind – and conform to them. 3.
ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੪॥੬੨॥੧੩੧॥
Rav rahi▫ā sarbaṯ su▫āmī. Guṇ gāvai Nānak anṯarjāmī. ||4||62||131||
(Suaami) the Master (rav-i rahia) pervades (sarbat) everywhere and (antarjaami) is present in all; fifth Nanak, the seeker (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates virtues of the Master. 4. 62. 131.

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Bẖai mėh racẖi▫o sabẖ sansārā. Ŧis bẖa▫o nāhī jis nām aḏẖārā. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. The Creator (rachio) has created (sabh-u) the whole (sansaara = worlds) universe (mah-i) in, i.e. subject to IT’s (bhai = fear) obedience to Naam/the laws of nature. One (jis-u) who has (naam-u) Divine commands as (adhaaraa) mainstay of life, (tis-u) that person has no (bhau) apprehensions. 1
ਭਉ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bẖa▫o na vi▫āpai ṯerī sarṇā. Jo ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai so▫ī karṇā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O God, (bhau) fear (na viaapai) does afflict when one is in (teyri) Your (saran = sanctuary) care and obedience. One (karna) does (jo) what (bhaavai) pleases, i.e. is commanded by (tudh-u) You. 1.

ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖ ਮਹਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੨॥
Sog harakẖ mėh āvaṇ jāṇā. Ŧin sukẖ pā▫i▫ā jo parabẖ bẖāṇā. ||2||
One who acts by self-will goes through (sog) sorrow and (harakh) joy in life, and cycles of (aavan = coming) births and (jaana = going) deaths. One (jo) who acts by (bhaana = will) commands of (prabh) the Almighty (tin-i) that person (paaiaa) experiences (sukh-u) peace. 2.
ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
Agan sāgar mahā vi▫āpai mā▫i▫ā. Se sīṯal jin saṯgur pā▫i▫ā. ||3||
Lure of (Mahaa = great) strong (maaiaa) temptations (agan-i = of fire, saagar-u = ocean) in the world-play (viaapai) afflict, i.e. keep the humans restless. (Sey) those who (paaiaa) find/follow (satigur-u) the true guru, – obey Naam and – remain (seetal = cool) at peace. 3.
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਆ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੬੩॥੧੩੨॥
Rākẖ le▫e parabẖ rākẖanhārā. Kaho Nānak ki▫ā janṯ vicẖārā. ||4||63||132||
(Raakhanhaara) the protector (prabh-u) Almighty (raakh-i ley-i) protects those who obey. (Jant) the creature (kiaa = what? vichaara = helpless) has no capability says fifth Nanak. 4. 62. 132.

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Ŧumrī kirpā ṯe japī▫ai nā▫o. Ŧumrī kirpā ṯe ḏargėh thā▫o. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. O true guru, it is (tey) with (tumri) your (kripa) kind guidance that we (japeeai) remember/conform to (naau) Divine virtues and commands. It is with your kindness that one gets (thaau) place (dargah) in Divine court, i.e. unites with the almighty. 1.
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Ŧujẖ bin pārbarahm nahī ko▫e. Ŧumrī kirpā ṯe saḏā sukẖ ho▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (Paarbrahm) Supreme Being, (naahi koey) there is none (bin-u) except (tujh) You to grant peace. other (tumri) Your (kripa) grace alone can grant us (sukh) comfort/peace (sadaa) forever – by union with You. 1.

ਤੁਮ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੇ ਤਉ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੨॥
Ŧum man vase ṯa▫o ḏūkẖ na lāgai. Ŧumrī kirpā ṯe bẖaram bẖa▫o bẖāgai. ||2||
When (tum) You (vasey) abide (man-i) in mind, (tau) then – one commits novices and – (laagai) experiences no (dookh-u) grief. With Your grace (bhram-u = wandering) transgressions and resultant (bhau) fear (bhaagi = runs) is obviated. 2.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੩॥
Pārbarahm aprampar su▫āmī. Sagal gẖatā ke anṯarjāmī. ||3||
O (paarbrahm) Supreme Spirit, you are (aprampar) the Infinite (Suaami) Master of all. You are (antarjaami) abiding in (sagal) all (ghattaa) minds – and take care of them. 3.
ਕਰਉ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੬੪॥੧੩੩॥
Kara▫o arḏās apne saṯgur pās. Nānak nām milai sacẖ rās. ||4||64||133||
I (karau) make (ardaas-i) supplication (paas-i) with (apney = own) my (satigur) true guru. May I (milai) get (sach-u) eternal (raas-i) wealth of (naam-u) Divine commands – as support/guide for life, says fifth Nanak. 4. 64. 133.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਕਣ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੈਸੇ ਥੋਥਰ ਤੁਖਾ ॥ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਸੂਨੇ ਸੇ ਮੁਖਾ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Kaṇ binā jaise thothar ṯukẖā. Nām bihūn sūne se mukẖā. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Jaisey) like (thothar) hollow (tukhaa) grain cover (binaa) without (kan) the grain = has no value. (Mukha = faces) persons (bihoon) bereft of awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands are (sooney) empty, i.e. ignorant of purpose of life.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਦੇਹ ਬਿਗਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Har har nām japahu niṯ parāṇī. Nām bihūn ḏẖarig ḏeh bigānī. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (praani) mortal, (nit) ever (japah-u) remember/obey (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) Divine commands. (Deyh = body) human form (bihoon) bereft of Naam is (bigaani/bey-giaani) ignorant of the purpose of life is (dhrig-u) shameful, i.e. this sublime life form is wasted. 1.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਗੁ ॥ ਭਰਤ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਕਹਾ ਸੋਹਾਗੁ ॥੨॥
Nām binā nāhī mukẖ bẖāg. Bẖaraṯ bihūn kahā sohāg. ||2||
(Binaa) without conforming to Naam, one cannot have (bhaag-u) good fortune written (mukh-i = on the face) in destiny. Like a woman (bihoon) without (bharat) husband is (kahaa = how?) not (sohaag) considered fortunate. 2.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗੈ ਅਨ ਸੁਆਇ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਪੂਜੈ ਕਾਇ ॥੩॥
Nām bisār lagai an su▫ā▫e. Ŧā kī ās na pūjai kā▫e. ||3||
One who (bisaar-i) forgets Naam and (lagai) engages in (an) other (suaaey) tastes, like rituals or worships; (Na kaaey = not any) no (aas) wish (ta ki = of that) of that person (poojai) is fulfilled, i.e. is never at peace. 3.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੬੫॥੧੩੪॥
Kar kirpā parabẖ apnī ḏāṯ. Nānak nām japai ḏin rāṯ. ||4||65||134||
(Prabh) O God, please (kar-i) bestow (apni = own) Your (daat-i) benediction that fifth Nanak, the seeker, (japai) remembers/conforms to (naam-u) Divine commands (din) day and (raat-i) night, i.e. sincerely carries out the role allotted by the Creator. 4. 65. 134.

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Ŧūʼn samrath ṯūʼnhai merā su▫āmī. Sabẖ kicẖẖ ṯum ṯe ṯūʼn anṯarjāmī. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. O Almighty, (toon) you are (samrath-u) Omnipotent, (toonhai) You alone are (meyra) my (suaami) Master. (Sabh-u kichh-u) everything happens (tey = by, tum = you) with Your commands, the laws of nature; (toon) You (antarjaami) are present in all creatures – and act through them. 1.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਜਨ ਓਟ ॥ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਉਧਰਹਿ ਜਨ ਕੋਟਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Pārbarahm pūran jan ot. Ŧerī saraṇ uḏẖrahi jan kot. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (paarbrahm) Supreme Being, you are the (pooran ot) perfect shelter/support for (jan) the humble devotee. (Jan kot = crores of people) multitudes (udhre) are saved (teyri) in Your (saran-I = sanctuary) care and obedience. 1.

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ॥ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥੨॥
Jeṯe jī▫a ṯeṯe sabẖ ṯere. Ŧumrī kirpā ṯe sūkẖ gẖanere. ||2||
(Jetey = as many) all (jea) creatures (teytey = that many) they all are (teyrey = your) created by, and accountable to, You. There are (ghhaneyrey) abundant (sookh) comforts (tey) with (tumri) Your (kripa) grace, i.e. all wishes are fulfilled by obedience to Naam/laws of nature. 2.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥੩॥
Jo kicẖẖ varṯai sabẖ ṯerā bẖāṇā. Hukam būjẖai so sacẖ samāṇā. ||3||
(Jo kichh-u) whatever (vartai) happens is (sabh) is all by (teyra) Your (bhaana = will) laws of nature. One who (boojhai = understands) obeys (hukam-u) Divine commands (samaana) merges (sach-i) in the Eternal. 3.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੀਜੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੬੬॥੧੩੫॥
Kar kirpā ḏījai parabẖ ḏān. Nānak simrai nām niḏẖān. ||4||66||135||
O (prabh) God, please (kar-i kirpa) be kind and (deejay) give this (daan-u) charity/ability. That fifth Nanak, the seeker (simrai) keeps in mind (nidhaan-u = treasure) the wealth of Naam, – as resource for leading life

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Ŧā kā ḏaras pā▫ī▫ai vadbẖāgī. Jā kī rām nām liv lāgī. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. It is (vaddbhaagi) with good fortune that (daras-u = meeting) company is (paaeeai) obtained (ta ki) of that person, (ja ki) whose (liv) mind (laagi) is focused on obeying (naam-i) Naam/commands of (raam) the Almighty. 1.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jā kai har vasi▫ā man māhī. Ŧā ka▫o ḏukẖ supnai bẖī nāhī. ||1|| rahā▫o.
One (maahi) in (ja kai) whose (man) mind (har-i) the Almighty (vasiaa) abides, i.e. who conforms to Divine commands; there no (dukh-u) grief (ta kau) for that person (bhi) even (supnai) in dream. 1.

ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਰਾਖੇ ਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
Sarab niḏẖān rākẖe jan māhi. Ŧā kai sang kilvikẖ ḏukẖ jāhi. ||2||
The Almighty has (raakhey) placed (sarab) all (nidhaan) treasures, i.e. the wealth of Naam, (maah-i) in the mind of (jan) the seeker. In (ta kai = of that) the seeker’s (sang-i) company one gives up (kilvikh) transgressions and resultant (dukh) distress (jaah-i = leave) is obviated. 2.
ਜਨ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਥੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਨੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
Jan kī mahimā kathī na jā▫e. Pārbarahm jan rahi▫ā samā▫e. ||3||
It is (na jaaey) not possible to describe (mahima) virtues of the devotee; because (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being (rahiaa samaaey) abides in (jan-u) the devotee – and Divine virtues are hard to describe. 3.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਨਉ ਸੁਨੀਜੈ ॥ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੬੭॥੧੩੬॥

O God, please (kari kirpa) be kind and (suneejai) listen to my (binau) submission; (deejai) give (daas ki dhoor-i = the dust of the devotee’s feet) fifth Nanak in the service of Your devotee – to serve, and follow example of, the devotee. 4. 67. 136.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਜਾਇ ਬਲਾਇ ॥ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Har simraṯ ṯerī jā▫e balā▫e. Sarab kali▫āṇ vasai man ā▫e. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. O human being, (teyri) your (balaaey) tormentors, the temptations (jaaey = go) cannot afflict (simrat) with remembrance/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty. And (sarab) all happiness (aaey) comes to (vasai) abide (man-i) in mind. 1.
ਭਜੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੈ ਆਵੈ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bẖaj man mere eko nām. Jī▫a ṯere kai āvai kām. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (meyrey) mind, (bhaj) invoke (eyko) the One Naam/Almighty. This will) aavai kaam) be useful to (teyrai kai) your (jeea) soul. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.
ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ਅਨੰਤਾ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੰਤਾ ॥੨॥
Raiṇ ḏinas guṇ gā▫o ananṯā. Gur pūre kā nirmal mannṯā. ||2||
(Gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (anata) the Infinite (rain-i) night and (dinas-u) day. This is (manta) mantra/formula for union with the Almighty, given by (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru. 2.
ਛੋਡਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਏਕ ਟੇਕ ਰਾਖੁ ॥ ਮਹਾ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੁ ॥੩॥
Cẖẖod upāv ek tek rākẖ. Mahā paḏārath amriṯ ras cẖākẖ. ||3||
(Chhodd-i) give up your (upaav) methods and (raakh-u) maintain (eyk) one (tteyk) mainstay. (Chaakh-u = taste) experience living by (mahaa) the great (padaarath-u) gift of (amrit) life-giving (ras-u) elixir of Naam – present within you. 3.
ਬਿਖਮ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤੇਈ ਜਨ ਤਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੪॥੬੮॥੧੩੭॥
Bikẖam sāgar ṯe▫ī jan ṯare. Nānak jā ka▫o naḏar kare. ||4||68||137||
(Teyee) only such (jan) persons (tarey) swim across (bikham) the difficult (saagar-u) ocean, i.e. overcome temptations in the world-play. (Ja kau) on whom the Almighty (karey) bestows (nadar-i) grace – to lead to the guru for guidance, says fifth Nanak. 4. 68. 137.

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Hirḏai cẖaran kamal parabẖ ḏẖāre. Pūre saṯgur mil nisṯāre. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. Those who (dhaarey) keeping (hirdai) in the mind (charan kamal) the lotus feet/commands of (prabh) the Creator, (mil-i = meet) with guidance of (poorey) the perfect (satigur) true guru, (nistaarey) get across night/life, i.e. end cycles of births and deaths. 1.
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Govinḏ guṇ gāvhu mere bẖā▫ī. Mil sāḏẖū har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (meyrey) my (bhaaee) brethren, (gaavah-u = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (govind) Master of the world, and (dhiaaee) pay attention to/obey (naam-u) commands of (har-i) the Almighty (mil-i) with guidance of (saadhoo) the guru.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.
ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
Ḏulabẖ ḏeh ho▫ī parvān. Saṯgur ṯe pā▫i▫ā nām nīsān. ||2||
(Dulabh) hard-to-get (deyh = body) human birth (hoee parvaan) is approved – the soul is accepted for merger with God; (neesaan = marking) the sign identification for this is compliance with (naam) Divine virtues and commands, (paaiaa) received from (satgur) the true guru. 2.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
Har simraṯ pūran paḏ pā▫i▫ā. Sāḏẖsang bẖai bẖaram mitā▫i▫ā. ||3||
Achieving merger with God is (param) the most exalted (pad-u =rank) status and is (paaias) obtained by (har-i simrat) remembering/obeying God. Any (bhai) apprehensions or (bharam) doubts – about merger with God – are (mittaaia) erased/obviated by (saadhsang-i) the guru’s company/guidance. 3.
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਤ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥੪॥੬੯॥੧੩੮॥
Jaṯ kaṯ ḏekẖ▫a▫u ṯaṯ rahi▫ā samā▫e. Nānak ḏās har kī sarṇā▫e. ||4||69||138||
We do not have to go any particular place to find God and praise Divine virtues; (jat kat) wherever we (deykhau) look, the Creator (rahia samaai) is seen present (tat) there; Says (daas) the humble seeker Nanak: (sarnaaey) I have placed myself in care (har-i ki) of the Creator – that is the way to union with God. 4. 69. 138.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Bal-i jaau = I am sacrifice) I shall do anything (darsan kau) to find/meet (guru ji) the respected guru; (jeeva) I live (jap-i pap-i) ever remembering (naau) the virtues/teachings of (satgur) the true guru. 1.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲਾਗਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Pārbarahm pūran gurḏev. – Kar kirpā lāga▫o ṯerī sev. ||1|| rahā▫o.
(Paarbrahm) O Supreme Being, you are (pooran) the perfect (gurdev = light for the guru) Supreme teacher; please (kar-i krpa) be kind to impart awareness that (laagau) I engage (seyv = service) – in obedience of (teyri) Your commands. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਧਨ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
Cẖaran kamal hirḏai ur ḏẖārī. Man ṯan ḏẖan gur parān aḏẖārī. ||2||
May I (dhaar-i) keep (charan kamal = lotus feet) Divine virtues and commands in (ur) mind. And have (gur) the guru’s teachings as (adhaari = support) guide for (man = mind) thoughts, (tan = body) deeds and use of (dhan) wealth/resources. 2.
ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੩॥
Safal janam hovai parvāṇ. Gur pārbarahm nikat kar jāṇ. ||3||
(Janam-u) human birth is (saphal) when successful if the soul (hovai) is (parvaan-u) accepted – for union with the Creator – for this, may I (kar-i jaan-u) perceive (gur-u) the great (paarbrahm-u) Supreme Spirit Supreme (nikatt-i) near – and ever obey. 3.
ਸੰਤ ਧੂਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟਤ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੭੦॥੧੩੯॥
Sanṯ ḏẖūr pā▫ī▫ai vadbẖāgī. Nānak gur bẖetaṯ har si▫o liv lāgī. ||4||70||139||
(Vadbhaagi) it is by good fortune that opportunity for (dhoor-i = dust of feet) service and obedience (sant = saint) the guru is (paaeeai) obtained. Says fifth Nanak: One’s (liv) attention (laagi) is focused (siau) on (har-i) the Almighty on (bheyttat) meeting and following the guru. 4. 70. 139.
