ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Gur kai bacẖan mohi param gaṯ pā▫ī. Gur pūrai merī paij rakẖā▫ī. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri.
By following (bachan-i = words) teachings (gur kai) of the guru (moh-i) I have (paaee) attained (param) supreme (gati) state – of overcoming temptations.
(Poorai) the perfect guru has (rakhaai = saved (meri) my (paij) honor – I am free of vices and at peace. 1.
This is how it happened.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Gur kai bacẖan ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫o mohi nā▫o. Gur parsāḏ mohi mili▫ā thā▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.
(Moh-i) I (dhiaaio) pay attention to/obey (naau) Divine commands (bachan-i) as taught by the guru. I (miliaa) obtained (thaau = place) steadfastness (parsaad-i) with grace/guidance of the guru. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell here and reflect.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਰਸਨ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
Gur kai bacẖan suṇ rasan vakẖāṇī. Gur kirpā ṯe amriṯ merī baṇī. ||2||
(Suni) after listening to (gur kai) the guru’s (bachan-i = words) teachings, I (vakhaani) utter/recount Divine virtues (rasan) with my tongue; with (kirpa) the grace of the guru my own (baani) speech became (amrit) life-giving, i.e. I disseminate Naam/Divine virtues and commands. 2.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪੁ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਇਆ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੩॥
Gur kai bacẖan miti▫ā merā āp. Gur kī ḏa▫i▫ā ṯe merā vad parṯāp. ||3||
By following the guru’s teachings my (aap = self) self-praise has (mittia= erased) ended. (Tey) with (daiaa) the kindness of the guru, I have (vad) great (partaap-u) majesty/influence. 3.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਮੁ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੪॥
Gur kai bacẖan miti▫ā merā bẖaram. Gur kai bacẖan pekẖi▫o sabẖ barahm. ||4||
By the guru’s teachings my (bharam-u) doubt about the omnipresence and omnipotence of the Creator (mittiaa) has been removed.
I now (peykhio) see (brahm-u) the Creator (sabh-u) everywhere and in all. 4.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥੫॥
Gur kai bacẖan kīno rāj jog. Gur kai sang ṯari▫ā sabẖ log. ||5||
By following the guru’s teachings, I (keeno) perform/enjoy (raj) the royal (jog) yoga/method of union with the Creator – Raj Jog a householder conforming to Naam.
I am not alone. (Sangi) in the company of the guru (Sabh-u) every (log) person (sang-i) in company (kai) of (gur) the guru (tariaa = swims) can overcome vices and unite with the Creator. 5.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਿਧਿ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਉ ਨਿਧਿ ॥੬॥
Gur kai bacẖan mere kāraj siḏẖ. Gur kai bacẖan pā▫i▫ā nā▫o niḏẖ. ||6||
By following the guru’s teachings all my (kaaraj) objectives (sidhi) get achieved;
I have thus (paaia) obtained (nau nidhi = nine treasures) all the treasures of the world – I am contented. 6.
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਟੀਐ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਾ ॥੭॥
Jin jin kīnī mere gur kī āsā. Ŧis kī katī▫ai jam kī fāsā. ||7||
(Jin-i jin-i) whosoever (keeni = does) places his/her (aasa) hope on (mere = my) the guru – i.e. acts on the guru’s teachings without looking for rewards.
(phaasa) the noose of (jam) the messengers of death (tis ki) of that person (kateeai) is cut – i.e. such a person does not fall prey to vices. 7.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਮੁ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੮॥੮॥
Gur kai bacẖan jāgi▫ā merā karam. Nānak gur bẖeti▫ā pārbarahm. ||8||8||
By following the guru’s teachings my (karam) destiny, based on past deeds has (jaagia = awakened) come forth.
I (bheyttia) met/followed (gur-u) the guru and through his guidance (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being everywhere, says fifth Nanak. 8. 8.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Ŧis gur ka▫o simra▫o sās sās. Gur mere parāṇ saṯgur merī rās. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. I (simrau) remember (tis = that) the guru – who has virtues described below – (saas-i saas-i) with every breath i.e. I ever live by the guru’s teachings.
The guru’s teachings are mere) my very (praan) life and my (raas) wealth/capital with which I live me in life. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell here and reflect.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਜੀਵਾ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਧੋਇ ਧੋਇ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥
Gur kā ḏarsan ḏekẖ ḏekẖ jīvā. Gur ke cẖaraṇ ḏẖo▫e ḏẖo▫e pīvā. ||1||
I (jeeva) am enlivened to (deykh-i deykh-i) seeing (darsan-u = sight) example of the guru.
I (dhoey dhoey) wash the guru’s (charan) feet and drink the wash i.e. I humbly try to understand the guru’s teachings and assimilate them. 1.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਨਿਤ ਮਜਨੁ ਕਰਉ ॥ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਹਰਉ ॥੨॥
Gur kī reṇ niṯ majan kara▫o. Janam janam kī ha▫umai mal hara▫o. ||2||
I (nit) ever (majan-u karau) bathe myself in (reyn) the dust of the guru’s feet i.e. humbly receives the guru’s teachings and purify myself by following them.
With this I (harau) remove (mal-u) the dirt of (haumai) ego/acting by self-will (janam janam) numerous past births i.e. be rid of the influences of wrong-doings of past lives, on my soul. 2.
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਝੂਲਾਵਉ ਪਾਖਾ ॥ਮਹਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਹਾਥੁ ਦੇ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੩॥
Ŧis gur ka▫o jẖūlāva▫o pākẖā. Mahā agan ṯe hāth ḏe rākẖā. ||3||
I (jhoolaavau) wave (paakha) the fan (kau) for the guru i.e. provide comfort to the guru,
who (dey) gave his (haath-u) helping hand and (raakha) saved me from (maha agani) the powerful fire of vices and cooled my mind. 3.
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਢੋਵਉ ਪਾਣੀ ॥ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੪॥
Ŧis gur kai garihi dẖova▫o pāṇī. Jis gur ṯe akal gaṯ jāṇī. ||4||
I (ddhovau) carry water (grih-i) for the household (kai) of the guru i.e. serve water to the congregation of the guru.
(Tey) from jis-u) which guru I (jaani) learnt (gati= state) about the Creator’s virtues who is otherwise (akal = without attributes) formless and physically unknowable. 4.
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੀਸਉ ਨੀਤ ॥ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵੈਰੀ ਸਭ ਮੀਤ ॥੫॥
Ŧis gur kai garihi pīsa▫o nīṯ. Jis parsāḏ vairī sabẖ mīṯ. ||5||
I (peesau) grind the grain (grih-i) for the guru’s household i.e. serve food to the congregation.
With (jis-u) whose (parsaad-i) the grace/guidance I see (sabh) all (vairi) enemies as (meet) friends. 5.

ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੀਨਾ ਜੀਉ ॥ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦਾਸਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੁਲਿ ਲੀਉ ॥੬॥
Jin gur mo ka▫o ḏīnā jī▫o. Āpunā ḏāsrā āpe mul lī▫o. ||6||
(Jin-i) which guru (deena) gave (jeeo) life (kau) to (mo) me, i.e. revived/saved me from the vices. The guru (aapye) himself bought and made me (apuna daasra) his servant (mul-i) by outright purchase i.e. I obey the guru like a slave. 6.
ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਕਰੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
Āpe lā▫i▫o apnā pi▫ār. Saḏā saḏā ṯis gur ka▫o karī namaskār. ||7||
The guru (aapey) himself (laaio) generated (apna = own) his (piaar) love in my mind so that I could follow his teachings.
I (sadaa sadaa) forever (kari) pay (namskaar-u) obeisance to/obey (tis-u = that) such a virtuous guru. 7.
ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਭੈ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਦੁਖ ਲਾਥਾ ॥ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਰਾਥਾ ॥੮॥੯॥
Kal kales bẖai bẖaram ḏukẖ lāthā. Kaho Nānak merā gur samrāthā. ||8||9||
(Kaleys) strife (kal-i) caused by conflicts, (bhai) fear, (bhram) aimless wandering and (dukh) pain (laatha = removed) have gone. Says fifth Nanak: My guru is so (samraatha) capable. 8. 9.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਮਿਲੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹੁ ॥ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਅਸਨੇਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Mil mere gobinḏ apnā nām ḏeh. Nām binā ḏẖarig ḏẖarig asnehu. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. Please (mil = meet) help me find You within me, (mere) my Creator, (gobind) the Master of the world; please (deyh = give) impart me awareness of (apna = own) Your (naam-u) commands – on how to lead life.
(Asneh) love of things given by the Creator and (bina= without) not obeying (naam) commands is (dhrig dhrig) highly disgraceful. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell here and reflect.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਖਾਇ ॥ਜਿਉ ਕੂਕਰੁ ਜੂਠਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
Nām binā jo pahirai kẖā▫e. Ji▫o kūkar jūṯẖan mėh pā▫e. ||1||
(Jo) whatever one (phirai) wears and (khaaey) eats (binaa = without) and not obeying (naam) Divine commands.
is (jiau) like (kookar-u) a dog (paaey) puts its mouth (mah-i) I (jootthan) discarded food, i.e. is undeserved. 1.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੇਤਾ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ॥ਜਿਉ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Nām binā jeṯā bi▫uhār. Ji▫o mirṯak mithi▫ā sīgār. ||2||
(Jeyta) whatever (biohaar = dealings, actions) rituals one performs (bina) without Divine virtues and commands in mind,
they are as (mithia= false) useless (jio) as (seegaar) adornment of (mirtak) a dead body – i.e. is only for display. 2.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ॥ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਗ ॥੩॥
Nām bisār kare ras bẖog. Sukẖ supnai nahī ṯan mėh rog. ||3||
One who (bisaari) forgets Naam and (karey = does) enjoys (ras bhog) pleasures,
cannot have (sukh-u) peace of mind even (supnai) in a dream, and suffers (tan meh = in body) physical afflictions – as a result of indulgence. 3.
ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਨ ਕਾਜ ॥ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਜ ॥੪॥
Nām ṯi▫āg kare an kāj. Binas jā▫e jẖūṯẖe sabẖ pāj. ||4||
One who (tiaag-i) gives up/ignores (naam-u) Divine commands and (karey) does/performs (an) other (kaaj) actions for display.
They are (jhootthey) false (paaj) exhibition and (binas-i jaaey = destroyed) go waste – they do not please the Creator. 4.
ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੋ ਨਰਕਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
Nām sang man parīṯ na lāvai. Kot karam karṯo narak jāvai. ||5||
One who does not (laavai = attach) have (preet) love (sangi) for Naam – i.e. does not live by Divine commands,
that person even while (karto) performing (koti) millions of (karam) rituals (jaavai) goes (narak-i) in hell i.e. is put in cycles of reincarnation. 5.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਆਰਾਧਾ ॥ਚੋਰ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ॥੬॥
Har kā nām jin man na ārāḏẖā. Cẖor kī ni▫ā▫ī jam pur bāḏẖā. ||6||
(Jin-i) one who does not (araadha = remember) keep Naam (man-i) in mind,
such a person commits vices and is (baadha) bound (niaaee) like a (chor) thief to be taken to (pur-i) habitat of – i.e. comes in control of – (jam) the messengers of death and sent for reincarnation. 6.
ਲਾਖ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
Lākẖ adambar bahuṯ bisthārā. Nām binā jẖūṯẖe pāsārā. ||7||
People make lakhs of (addambar) displays to impress other people of bahut) numerous (bisthaara = spread) types.
But all of these (bina =without) except for living by Naam are (jhootthey) false (paasaara = expanse) shows. 7.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਇ ॥ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਇ ॥੮॥੧੦॥
Har kā nām so▫ī jan le▫e. Kar kirpā Nānak jis ḏe▫e. ||8||10||
However, the creatures do nothing on their own. Only (soee) that (jan-u) person (ley-i = takes) follows the virtues and commands of (har-i) the Creator, (jis-u) whom the Creator (kar-i kirpa) kindly (dae) gives these, says Nanak. 8. 10.
