When (dubidha = duality) thoughts about others have been (sahj-i) intuitively (samaaey) dissolved, (kaaman-i) the soul-bride, i.e. the mind s purified, (kaaman-i) the soul-wife (paaey) finds (var-u) the Almighty-spouse within and (rangu laaey) makes merry, i.e. enjoys life free of vices, (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance.

Otherwise (ih) this (sareer-u) body (bharia) is (gal taaee = up to the throat) fully filled with (koorr-i) falsehood and (kusat-i) deceit with and (kamaaey) indulges in (paap) wrong-doings.

To remove the filth of vices, (bhagt-i) devotion to the Almighty develops (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance by (jit-u) which (sahj) steady (dhun-i) tune) upjai) comes, i.e. one conforms to Divine commands; (mail-u) the filth of other ideas (na jaaey) does not leave (bin-u) without (bhagti) devotion.

(Kaaman-i) the soul-wife who (gavaaey = loses) sheds (aap-u) self-importance (vichah-u) from within, (piaari) is loved (pirah-i) the Almighty-husband, says third Nanak. 1.

(Kaaman-i) the soul-bride (paaia) finds (pir-u) the spouse – the Creator within the mind – by following (bhaaey) will/teachings of (piaarey) the loveable guru.
Now she (ur-i dhaarey) keeps the Almighty (antar-i) in mind, and (suti) sleeps (sukh-i) in peace (rain-i) at night, i.e. lives life peacefully.

The soul-wife (mileeai) finds (piaarey) the beloved (ur-i dhaarey) by keeping Divine virtues and commands in mind; and (nivaarey) ends (dukh) suffering due to separation (andin-u = every day) forever.
(Veechaarey) by reflecting on Divine virtues (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance, the soul-bride (raavey) enjoys (mahal-u = divine mansion) the presence of (pir-u) the Creator within.

On the other hand, the soul-woman who does not follow the guru, (manmukh-i) the self-willed woman (viaapi) remains engrossed (kaam-i) in lust, is (santaapi) suffers being caught (moh-i) in lure of temptations; she can (mokaarey) entreaty (aagai) before (kis-u = whom?) no one, she is herself responsible for the afflictions.

(Manmukh-i) a self-willed soul-wife does not (paaey) find (thaaey) place with the Almighty-husband, (bin-u = without) for not following (at-I the very (piaaarey) dear guru, says third Nanak. 3.

IT (paaeeai) found with (preym) love and (preet-I bhaaey) loving (bhagti) dedication/obedience; (satigur-i) the true guru (bujhaaee) imparts this (boojh) understanding.

The soul-wife then (andin-u = everyday) ever (rahai) remains (anand-i) in bliss with (liv) attention (laaee) fixed on obedience to Divine commands.

(Saadhan) the soul-woman who (paaee) has obtained (naunidh-i = nine reassures) awareness of Namm (sahjey) intuitively (paaiaa) finds (var-u) the Almighty, says Third Nanak. 4. 3.

Composition of the third guru in Raga Gaurri. Question: (Maaia) temptations of the world play make the world like a (sabal-u) powerful/difficult (sar-u) pool/ocean (vartai) present eveywhere; (kiau kar-i) how may this (dutar) hard to cross ocean (taria) be crossed, i.e. temptations overcome?

Answer: (Kar-i) make living by (naam-u) Divine commands of (raam) the Almighty, (bohitha) the ship and (paaey) place (sabad-u) the guru’s teachings as (kheyvatt-u) the sailor captain of the ship (vich-i) in it.

When one (paaey) places/takes (sabad-u) the guru’s teachings as (kheyvatt-u) the sailor captain of the ship (vich-i) in it, i.e. when we obey Naam, with the guru’s guidance, (har-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (laghaaey) ferries; (in bidh-i) this is how we (tareeai) can get across/overcome (dutar-u) the hard-to-cross ocean of temptations

Further, (bhagati) devotion (praapat-i hovai = received) inculcated (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance; (iau) this is how we (mareeai) die (jeevtia) while alive – i.e. not be affected by temptations like a dead person.

Conformance (naam-i) to Divine commands of (raam) the Almighty, (kaattey = cuts) negate (kilvikh) influences of past wrongdoings (khin mah-i) momentarily; thus (sareera) the body/mind (bhaey) becomes (pavit-u) purified.
(Nistaara = getting across night/life) emancipation from rebirth is obtained with compliance (raam naam-i) to Divine commands, with purified life, like (manoora) waste left by purifying a metal becomes (kanchan) gold, when it comes in contact with Paaras – as is the belief. 1.

The (istri) wife and (purakh) husband (viaapey) indulge in (kaam-i) satisfaction of desires and (na jaani = not known) forget (bidhi = method) the path of (raam naam) Divine commands.
In the family one remains immersed in (kharey) strong (piaarey) love for (maat) the mother, (pitaa) father, (sut = sons) children and (bhaaee = brothers) siblings. But they are of no help in the end, it is like (doob-i mooey) being drowned (bin-u) without (paani) water – an axiom -, i.e. feel ashamed for not obeying Divine commands.

Dūb mu▫e bin pāṇī gaṯ nahī jāṇī ha▫umai ḏẖāṯ sansāre. Jo ā▫i▫ā so sabẖ ko jāsī ubre gur vīcẖāre.

They (doob-i mooey) are drowned (bin-u) without (paani) water, i.e. feel ashamed for not obeying Divine commands; because of (haumai) ego, one (nahi jaani) remains oblivious of the need for (gati) freedom from attachments; this results in (dhaat = running) restlessness to satisfy desires in (sansaarai) the world.
One forgets that (sabh ko) everyone (jo) those who (aaia= comes) is born (so) s/he (jaasi = will go)will  die; (ubrey) emancipation from rebirth is possible through (gur veechaarey) reflecting/obeying on the guru’s teachings.

One who (hovai) is (gurmukh) the guru’s follower (vakhaanai = says) utters and obeys (raam naam-u) Divine commands; s/he (aap-i) him/her-self (tarai = swims) overcomes vices and (taarey = ferries) brings good name to his/her (kul) lineage.
Says third Nanak: When (naam-u) Divine commands (vasai = abide) are kept (antar-i) in (ghat) in the mind and obeyed (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance, (piaarey) the beloved Master (miley) is found. 2.

Rām nām bin ko thir nāhī jī▫o bājī hai sansārā. Ḏariṛ bẖagaṯ sacẖī jī▫o rām nām vāpārā.

This (sansaara) world is a (baaji) play of the Creator, i.e. people fall prey to temptations; (koi naahi) no one remains (thir-u) steadfast (bin-u) without obeying (raam naam) Divine commands – fixing focus on duties of life.
One should therefore be (drirr-u = firm) steadfast in (sachi) true (bhagat-i) dedication to the Eternal Master alone, and (vaapaara = do business) conduct oneself in accordance with (raam naam-u) Divine commands.

Rām nām vāpārā agam apārā gurmaṯī ḏẖan pā▫ī▫ai. Sevā suraṯ bẖagaṯ ih sācẖī vicẖahu āp gavā▫ī▫ai.

Like the conduct of business needs capital, awareness of (raam naam-u) Divine commands of the Creator who is (agam) beyond comprehension and (apaara) Infinite is (dhan-u) wealth/support for (vaapaara = dealings) conduct in life; this awareness (paaeeai) obtained (gurmati) with the guru’s teachings.
(Ih) this (saachi) true (seyva) service, (surat-i) consciousness and (bhagat-i) devotion; to (gavaaeeai = lose) give up (aap-u) self-importance (vachah-u) from within – and obey Divine commands.

(Ham) I was (mat-i = sense, heen = without) senseless, (moorakh) ignorant and (mugadh) foolish and (andhey = blind) ignorant; (satigur-i) the true guru (paaey) put me (maarag-i) on track.

Those who live (sabada-i) by Divine commands (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, are (suhaavey) comfortable to (andin-u = everyday) ever (gaaey = sing) praise/emulate (hari) Divine (gun) virtues, says third Nanak. 3.

But one can do nothing on his/her own; the Creator (aap-i) IT-self (karey) creates the creatures and (karaaey = causing to do) to perform roles in life. For this IT (savaarey = accomplishes) guides (sabad-i) through the guru’s teachings.
Is IT-self (satigur-u) the true guru, IT-self (sabad-u word) the teachings; (piaarey) has shown love for, i.e. accomplished tasks of,  (bhagat) obedient devotees (jug-u jug-u = age after age) at all times.

Being in conscience of everyone, the Almighty (beena) sees and (daanaa = wise) knows everything; IT-self (karaaey) causes to (seyv= serve) to perform their roles.

Third Nanak, the seeker, (sad) ever (balihaari = sacrifices, vittahu = to) adores (sachey) the Eternal Master who (aapey) IT-self (karey) creates the creatures and (karaaey = causing to do) perform roles in life. 4. 4.

Composition of the third guru in Raga Gaurri. The body addresses the soul; my dear (pira) master, (seyva kar-i = serve) follow the teachings (gur ki) of the guru to (dhiaaey) attentively obey (har-i naam-u) Divine commands.
Do not (jaah-i) go (door-i) away (manjnah-u) from me my dear master, you can (paaey) find (har-i) the Almighty (ghar-i baitthia = sitting at home) within.

(Seyva = service) compliance with directions of (gur) the guru is (khari) very (sukhaali) easy for one (jis no) whom the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (karaaey = causes to do) leads to the guru.

But one receives (vaddiaaee) glory/honor by compliance (naam-i) Naam (sach-i) of the Eternal; one goes to the guru and (paaey) obtains awareness of Naam, when (likhiaa) written (poorab-i) from the past, i.e. by nature formed based on past deeds, says third Nanak. 1.

O my (muyey) may you die – expression used to express love, my dear (rasna) tongue you (Muyey = dead) have fallen prey to temptations; (chaakh-u) taste (har-i) Divine (ras-u) elixir, i.e. live by Naam, and you will (gavaaey = lose) give up (an) other (saad) tastes, i.e. other pursuits both spiritual and mundane.

Saḏā har ras pā▫e jā har bẖā▫e rasnā sabaḏ suhā▫e. Nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e saḏā sukẖ pā▫e nām rahai liv lā▫e.

One (paaey) receives  (har-i) Divine (ras-u) experience when (bhaaey) liked by (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. by obedience; (rasna) the tongue (suhaaey) enjoys (sabad-I = by the word) praising Divine virtues.
One who experiences (dhiaaey) pays attention to/obeys (naam-u) Divine commands then one is (sadaa) ever (paaey) obtains (sukh-u) peace; s/he (rahai) remains with (lav) mind (laaey) fixed (naam-i) on obedience to Naam.

Nāme upjai nāme binsai nāme sacẖ samā▫e. Nānak nām gurmaṯī pā▫ī▫ai āpe la▫e lavā▫e. ||2||

One (upjai) is born and (binsai = destroyed) dies (naamey = by naam) according to laws of nature and (samaaey) merges (sach-i) in the Eternal (naamey) by obeying Naam.

Awareness of Naam (paaeeai) is obtained (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance; the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (laey lavaaey) has it taken/received, by leading to the guru, says third Nanak. 2.

Divine virtues are (paae) are received (gurmati) through the guru’s teachings; the Creator (aape) IT-self (laey = gets) causes them (lavaae = attached) to be taken/received, says Nanak. 2.

The body says: O (pira jiau) dear soul- spouse, the practice of (chhodd-i) leaving behind (dhan = wife) body and (sidhaaey) going (pardeys = abroad) outside in search of the objective/Creator; (eyh) this is (chaakri = service) working for (vidaani) others while in the employment the Master – i.e. they are rituals to impress the world but do not lead to the Creator.
(Kinai na) no one has ever (paaio) obtained (sukh-u) comfort/peace, (pira jio) my dear soul; it is only (lubhaaey) being lured (lobh-i) by temptations (bikhia = poison) to die, i.e. succumb to them.

One who (lubhaaey) is lured by (lobh) temptations (bikhia = poison) to die, i.e. succumb to them, (bhulaaey) is misled (bharam-i) in delusion; (oh-u) that person (kiau kar-i = how?) cannot (paaey) get (sukh-u) peace, i.e. cannot find the Almighty within.
(Chaakri) service (viddaani) of others, leaving the Master is (khari) very (dukhaali) grief giving; one (veych-i) sells (aap-u) the self and (gvaaey) loses (dharam-u) conscience.

One in (bandhan) bondage of (maaia) temptations of the world-play, (naahi) does not (ttikai naaahi) remain stable and is afflicted by (dukh-u) the pain of forgetting the Almighty (khin khin) every moment.
(Dukh-u) the pain (ka = of) caused by (maaiaa) temptations, (chookai) ends (tadey) only then, (jaa) if one (laaey) fixes (chit-u) consciousness (sabdi) on word/teachings of the guru. 3.

Manmukẖ mugaḏẖ gāvār pirā jī▫o sabaḏ man na vasā▫e. Mā▫i▫ā kā bẖaram anḏẖ pirā jī▫o har mārag ki▫o pā▫e.

(Pira jiau) my dear soul, a (mamukh) a self-willed person is (mugadh) foolish not to (vasaaey) keep (man-i) in mind (sabad) the guru’s teachings and remain (gaavaar-u) ignorant of Naam.
(Bhram-u) delusion caused by (maaia) temptations makes one (andh-u = blind) to Divine virtues, my dear soul; one (kiau = how?) cannot (paaey) find (maarag-u) path of Naam, ordained by (har-i) the Almighty.

Ki▫o mārag pā▫e bin saṯgur bẖā▫e manmukẖ āp gaṇā▫e. Har ke cẖākar saḏā suhele gur cẖarṇī cẖiṯ lā▫e.

(manmukh-i) a self-willed person (kiau = how) cannot (paaey) find (maarag-u) path, (bin-u) without complying with (bhaaey) will/directions of (satigur) the true guru, but wants (aap-u) the self (ganaaey) to be counted as great.

(Chaakar = servants) obedient devotees of (har-i) the Almighty (laaey) fix (chit-u) consciousness on being (charni) at feet/in obedience of (gur) the guru and are (sadaa) ever (suheley) in comfort/peace

(Kio) how can (manmukh) a self-willed person who (ganaai) wants him/her-self to be counted – i.e. is caught in ego – (maarag paae) find the path to the Creator? S/he cannot do so (bin) without (satgur) the true guru (bhaae) being pleased – i.e. without him/her seeking and following the guru’s teachings.
On the other hand (har ke chaakar) servants of the Creator – i.e. those who live by Divine commands, are (sadaa) ever (suhele) in comfort/peace.

Jis no har jī▫o kare kirpā saḏā har ke guṇ gā▫e. Nānak nām raṯan jag lāhā gurmukẖ āp bujẖā▫e. ||4||5||7||

One (jis no) on whom (har) the Creator (kirpa karey) is kind to lead to the guru, that person (sadaa) ever (gaaey = sings) praises/emulates (gun) virtues (key) of (har-i) the Almighty.

S/he makes use of (laahaa) the benefit/opportunity of (jag-i = of the world) human birth to obtain (ratan-u = jewel) the wealth of awareness of Naam – and wash off faults gathered in past births -; the Almighty (aap-i) IT=self leads to the guru and (bujhaaey) causes to understand (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, says third Nanak. 4. 5. 7.
