ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਪਤਿਤ ਅਸੰਖ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਨਹ ਪੁਨਹ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦਾਹਨਹਾਰ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Salok. Paṯiṯ asaʼnkẖ punīṯ kar punah punah balihār.
Nānak rām nām jap pāvko ṯin kilbikẖ ḏahanhār. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Slok) prologue. Conformance to Naam/virtues and commands of the Almighty (kar-i = make, puneet = pure) purifies (asankh) innumerable (patit) apostates; (balihaar = sacrifice yourself) submit to the Almighty (punah punah = again and again) forever.
Says fifth Nanak: My mind. (Jap-i) remember (tin = those) the (raam naam) Divine virtues and commands which act like (paavko) the fire (daahanhaar) capable of burning (kilbikh) sins i.e. remove the influence of wrong-doings from the mind. 1.
ਛੰਤ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਮਨਾ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਧੋ ॥ ਧਿਆਇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਮੁਕੰਦੇ ਕਟੀਐ ਕਾਲ ਦੁਖ ਫਾਧੋ ॥
Cẖẖanṯ. Jap manā ṯūʼn rām narā▫iṇ govinḏā har māḏẖo. Ḏẖi▫ā▫e manā murār mukanḏe katī▫ai kāl ḏukẖ fāḏẖo.
Chhant. My mind, (too’n) you should (jap-i) remember/obey (har-i, naraain) the Almighty (govinda) Master of the universe, and (maadho) the controller of Maaia, the world-play.
(Dhiaaey) pay attention to/obey (muraar) the destroyer of evil, (mukandey) the emancipator by remembering/obeying whom (phaadho) the noose/hold of (kaal) the messengers of death/vices in life (katteeai) is cut. —
ਦੁਖਹਰਣ ਦੀਨ ਸਰਣ ਸ੍ਰੀਧਰ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ॥ ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨਿਮਖ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਾਧੀਐ ॥
Ḏukẖharaṇ ḏīn saraṇ sarīḏẖar cẖaran kamal arāḏẖī▫ai. Jam panth bikẖ▫ṛā agan sāgar nimakẖ simraṯ sāḏẖī▫ai.
We should (araadheeai) invoke/conform to (charan kamal = lotus feet) commands of (sreedhar = husband of Sree the goddess of wealth) the Almighty (dukh-haran) banisher of suffering and (saran) sanctuary for the (deen poor) the hapless,;.
The (bikhra) difficult (panth) the path of (jam) Divine justice and (saagar = sea of fire) the world ocean of (agan-i) vices is (saadhiai) taken care of – converted to one of comfort – by (nimakh) a bit, i.e. by starting (simrat) keeping in mind, commands of the Almighty.
ਕਲਿਮਲਹ ਦਹਤਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਅਰਾਧੋ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮਾਧੋ ॥੧॥
Kalimalah ḏahṯā suḏẖ karṯā ḏinas raiṇ arāḏẖo. Binvanṯ Nānak karahu kirpā gopāl gobinḏ māḏẖo. ||1||
(Dinas-u rain-i) day and night, (araadho) invoke the Almighty who (kalmalah dahta = burns sins) saves from wrongdoings and (sudh karta) purifies.
Fifth Nanak (binvant-i) supplicates: My Master, please (karah-u kirpa) be kind to enable me to obey You; You are the (gopaal) the Sustainor and (gobind) Master of the universe, (maadho) the Master of the world-play. 1.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਦਾਮੋਦਰੁ ਦੁਖਹਰੁ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਸ੍ਰੀਰੰਗੋ ਦਇਆਲ ਮਨੋਹਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਬਿਰਦਾਇਆ ॥
Simar manā ḏāmoḏar ḏukẖhar bẖai bẖanjan har rā▫i▫ā. Sarīrango ḏa▫i▫āl manohar bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal birḏā▫i▫ā.
My (mana) mind, (simar-i) remember/obey (raaia) the sovereign (daamodar-u = one who has a rope round the waist, Krishna) Vishnu/sustainer – metaphor for – (har-i) Almighty, , (dukh-har-u) banisher of suffering and (bhai bhanjan-u) destroyer of fear.
(srirango) master of the world-play, (daiaal) compassionate, (Manohar-u) the mind-charmer, (birdaaia) whose nature is (bhagat vachhal-u) to love the devotees.
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਪੂਰਨ ਮਨਹਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਤਮ ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਉਧਾਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
Bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal purakẖ pūran manėh cẖinḏi▫ā pā▫ī▫ai. Ŧam anḏẖ kūp ṯe uḏẖārai nām man vasā▫ī▫ai.
Let us (man vasaaiai) keep in mind the Master who (udhaarai) saves from (andh koop = blind well) lured of temptations. The Almighty (bhagat-i vachhal) loves the devotees, (purakh pooran) fully potent, by whose obedience, one (paaeeai) receives (maneh chindia) whatever is wished (manah-i) by the mind.
ਸੁਰ ਸਿਧ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਗੁਣ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Sur siḏẖ gaṇ ganḏẖarab mun jan guṇ anik bẖagṯī gā▫i▫ā. Binvanṯ Nānak karahu kirpā pārbarahm har rā▫i▫ā. ||2||
(Sur) gods, (sidh) saints (gan) servants of the gods, (gandharb) singers of the gods, (mun-i jan) sages, and (anik bhagti) innumerable devotees (gaaia = sing) praise the Master.
Supplicates Nanak: O (paarbrahm) Supreme Being, (har-i) the Almighty (raaiaa) Sovereign Master, please (karah-u kirpa) be kind to enable me to praise You. 2.

ਚੇਤਿ ਮਨਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮੈ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥
Cẖeṯ manā pārbarahm parmesar sarab kalā jin ḏẖārī. Karuṇā mai samrath su▫āmī gẖat gẖat parāṇ aḏẖārī.
My mind (cheyt) remain consci0us of (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being, (parmesar-u) the Supreme Master, who (dhaari) holds (sarab) all (kala) powers.
Is (karuna mai) embodiment of compassion, (samrath-u) omnipotent (suaami) Master (adhaari) the support/mainstay for (praan) the life of (ghatt ghatt) all living beings.
ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਜੀਅ ਦਾਤਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੋ ॥ ਸਰਣਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਮੋਹਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਦਾਰੋ ॥
Parāṇ man ṯan jī▫a ḏāṯā be▫anṯ agam apāro. Saraṇ jog samrath mohan sarab ḏokẖ biḏāro.
(Daata = giver) the source of (praan) breath, (man, tan) mind, body and (jeea) life, (beyant) limit-less, (agam) beyond reach and (apaaro) Infinite.
(Saran jog-u) capable to provide sanctuary, (samrath-u) omnipotent, (mohan-u) mind-charmer who (bidaaro) banishes (dokh) faults
ਰੋਗ ਸੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਜਪਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਭ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
Rog sog sabẖ ḏokẖ binsahi japaṯ nām murārī. Binvanṯ Nānak karahu kirpā samrath sabẖ kal ḏẖārī. ||3||
(Sabh-i) all (rog = ailments) afflictions, (sog) sorrows, (dokh) shortcomings (binsah-i) are banished by (japat) remembering/conforming to (naam) virtues and commands of the Master (muraari) the destroyer of evil.
Fifth Nanak supplicates: (Karah-u kirpa) please be kind to save me from vices; You are (samrath) omnipotent (dhaari) having (sabh) all (kal) powers. 3.
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ਮਨਾ ਅਚੁਤ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਬਿਸੰਭਰੁ ਦੇਵਨ ਕਉ ਏਕੈ ਸਰਬ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥
Guṇ gā▫o manā acẖuṯ abẖināsī sabẖ ṯe ūcẖ ḏa▫i▫ālā. Bisambẖar ḏevan ka▫o ekai sarab karai parṯipālā.
My mind, (gun gaau) sing praises of (achut) unshakable/ever stable, (abinaasi = imperishable) eternal, (daiaala) compassionate Almighty who is the Master (ooch) above (sabh tey) all.
(Bisambhar-u) preserver of the universe, is the (eykai) only one (devan kau = who gives) beneficent Master who (karai pratipaala) nurtures/looks after (sarab) all.
ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ਮਹਾ ਦਇਆਲ ਦਾਨਾ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਭ ਕਿਸੈ ॥ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਨਾਸੈ ਜੀਅ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਸੈ ॥
Parṯipāl mahā ḏa▫i▫āl ḏānā ḏa▫i▫ā ḏẖāre sabẖ kisai. Kāl kantak lobẖ moh nāsai jī▫a jā kai parabẖ basai.
The (maha daiaal) the most compassionate, (daanaa) wise Master (daiaa dhaarey) is kind to (pratipaal) nurtures (sabh kisai) every one.
In whosoever’s (jeea) mind (prabh) the Master (vasai) abides, (kanttak = thorn) torture by (kaal) the messengers of death is obviated and (lobh-u) greed, (moh-u) lure of temptations (nasai) runs away of one, (ja kai) in whose (jeea) mind (prabh) the Almighty.
ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਭਈ ਪੂਰਨ ਘਾਲਾ ॥ ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਛ ਪੁਨੀ ਜਪਤ ਦੀਨ ਦੈਆਲਾ ॥੪॥੩॥
Suparsan ḏevā safal sevā bẖa▫ī pūran gẖālā. Binvanṯ Nānak icẖẖ punī japaṯ ḏīn ḏai▫ālā. ||4||3||
When (deyva = the source of light) the Creator is (suprasa’nn) pleased, one’s (seyva = service) life lived by Divine commands is (saphal) fruitful; the purpose of his/her (ghaala) toil is (pooran) accomplished i.e. s/he merges with the Creator.
Says fifth Nanak: All (ichh puni) wishes are fulfilled by (japat) remembering/obeying the Master, who is (deen daiaala) kind to the poor – hence obey the Almighty, o human being. 4. 3.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇਹਾ ਮਨਾਇ ਲੈਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੰਤੈ ॥ ਮਾਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਮੋਹਹ ਸਾਧੂ ਮੰਤੈ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Suṇ sakẖī▫e mil uḏam karehā manā▫e laihi har kanṯai. Mān ṯi▫āg kar bẖagaṯ ṯẖag▫urī mohah sāḏẖū manṯai.
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Suni) listen (sakheeay = friends) my associates in holy congregation; let us (udam kareha = make efforts) praise and (manaaey laihi) please (har kantai) the Master.
(Tiaag) giving up (maan) ego let us (mohah) charm the Master with (thagauri = inebriating drug) efforts to please by (bhagat) devotion (saadhoo mantai) according to the guru’s teachings.
ਸਖੀ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਇਹ ਰੀਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਭਗਵੰਤੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਰਾ ਮਰਣ ਭੈ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੰਤੈ ॥੧॥
Sakẖī vas ā▫i▫ā fir cẖẖod na jā▫ī ih rīṯ bẖalī bẖagvanṯai. Nānak jarā maraṇ bẖai narak nivārai punīṯ karai ṯis janṯai. ||1||
It is the (bhali) good (reet) principle/nature of (bhagvantai) the benevolent Master that once (vas-i aaiaa= comes under control) captured by devotion, IT (chhod na jaaee) does not forsake, i.e. once one gets committed to Divine obedience, God keeps one in that state – by saving from distractions caused by temptations.
IT (puneet karai) purifies (tis jantai) such a person and (nivaarai) obviates his/her (bhai) fear of (jara) old age, (maran) death (narak) the hell of rebirths, i.e. that person does not fall to vices agaun. 1.
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀਏ ਇਹ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਨੰਤੀ ਏਹੁ ਮਤਾਂਤੁ ਪਕਾਈਐ ॥ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਰਹਤ ਹੋਇ ਗੀਤ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਹਿ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
Suṇ sakẖī▫e ih bẖalī binanṯī ehu maṯāʼnṯ pakā▫ī▫ai. Sahj subẖā▫e upāḏẖ rahaṯ ho▫e gīṯ govinḏėh gā▫ī▫ai.
My friends, listen to (ih bhali) this good (bina’nti) request/suggestion: let us (pakaaeeai) make (ih) this (mataa’nt-u) resolution.
We shall then (hoey) be (sahj-i subhaaey) instinctively (rahat) free of (upaadh-i) pretence/deceit and (gaaeeai) sing (geet) songs of praising virtues (govindah-i) of the Master of the universe.
ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਨਾਸਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੨॥
Kal kales mitėh bẖaram nāsėh man cẖinḏi▫ā fal pā▫ī▫ai. Pārbarahm pūran parmesar Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai. ||2||
(Kaleys) strife caused by (kal-i) conflicts, (bhram) doubts/delusion, (naasah-i = run away) shall leave and we (paaiai) obtain (phal = fruit) fulfilment of (chindia) wishes (man-i) of the mind, i.e. find God/have peace.
When we (dhiaaeeai) pay attention/obey (naam-u) commands of (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being, (pooran) all-pervasive (parmeysar), the Supreme Master. 2.
ਸਖੀ ਇਛ ਕਰੀ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਖ ਮਨਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਸ ਪੁਜਾਏ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਦਰਸ ਬੈਰਾਗਨਿ ਪੇਖਉ ਥਾਨ ਸਬਾਏ ॥
Sakẖī icẖẖ karī niṯ sukẖ manā▫ī parabẖ merī ās pujā▫e. Cẖaran pi▫āsī ḏaras bairāgan pekẖa▫o thān sabā▫e.
My (sakhi) friends, I (ichh kari) wish and (nit) ever (sukh manaaee) make supplication; may the Master (aas pujaaey) fulfil (meyri) my (aas) wish, i.e. I find God/have peace.
(Piaasi) thirsting/yearning to be at (charan) feet of the Master and (bairagan-i) longing for (daras) vision of the Master, I (peykhau) look/search at (sabaaey) all (thaan) places.
ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਰਿਜਨੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਾਏ ॥੩॥
Kẖoj laha▫o har sanṯ janā sang sammrith purakẖ milā▫e. Nānak ṯin mili▫ā surijan sukẖ▫ḏāṯa se vadbẖāgī mā▫e. ||3||
I (khoj-i lahau) look for (sang-u) company of (sant janaa) the saints – i.e. Sadhsangat the holy congregation – which can (milaaey) help me find (sa’mmrith Purakh) the Omnipotent and Omnipresent Master.
The Creator, (surijan = gods) the Master of gods and (sukhdaata) source of peace/happiness (milia) is found by (tin) those who are (vadbhaagi) fortunate, (maaey) my mother, says fifth Nanak. 3.
ਸਖੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਵਸਾ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਿਲਿਆ ॥ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀਏ ਮੇਰੀ ਨੀਦ ਭਲੀ ਮੈ ਆਪਨੜਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥
Sakẖī nāl vasā apune nāh pi▫āre merā man ṯan har sang hili▫ā. Suṇ sakẖī▫e merī nīḏ bẖalī mai āpnaṛā pir mili▫ā.
My friends, I now (vasaa) live with (apuney = own) my (piaare) dear (naah) Master because my (man, tan) mind and body have (hilia) got used to/conform (sang-i) with (har-i) Divine commands.
My friends, (suni) listen, I get (bhali) good (need) sleep, i.e. am at peace, since I (milia) found (aapnarraa) my (pir-u) Almighty Master, says the soul-wife.
ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਖੋਇਓ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਭਇਆ ਕਉਲੁ ਖਿਲਿਆ ॥ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਨਾਨਕ
ਸੋਹਾਗੁ ਨ ਟਲਿਆ ॥੪॥੪॥੨॥੫॥੧੧॥
Bẖaram kẖo▫i▫o sāʼnṯ sahj su▫āmī pargās bẖa▫i▫ā ka▫ul kẖili▫ā. var pā▫i▫ā parabẖ anṯarjāmī Nānak sohāg na tali▫ā. ||4||4||2||5||11||
My (bhram-u) wandering (khoio = lost) has ended. I experience (saant) peace and (sahj) tranquility, like (kaul-u/kawal) the lotus flower (khilia) blossoms (pargaas bhaia) with the light of the sun.
I (paaia) have found (prabh-u) the Almighty (var-u) spouse, (antarjaami) who abides in everyone, my (sohaag-u) spouse never (ttaliaa – stopped) leaves the mind, says fifth Nanak. 4. 4. 2. 5. 11.
