ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਯਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥ ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੧॥
Salok. Yās japaṯ man ho▫e anand binsai ḏūjā bẖā▫o. Ḏūkẖ ḏaraḏ ṯarisnā bujẖai Nānak nām samā▫o. ||1||
Slok. Naam/Divine virtues and commands, (japat) remembering/conforming to (yaas) which (dooja) other (bhaau) ideas/pursuits (binsai = destroyed) are given up and (man-i) the mind (hoey) is happy. (Samaau = be absorbed) remain in obedience (naam-i) to Naam/Divine commands, it obviates (dookh) grief and (darad) pain; and fire of (trisna) desires (bujhai) is quenched.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਯਯਾ ਜਾਰਉ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਊ ॥ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਊ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Ya▫yā jāra▫o ḏurmaṯ ḏo▫ū. Ŧisėh ṯi▫āg sukẖ sėhje so▫ū.
Paurri. By the letter Yayya. Let us (jaarau = burn) destroy (durmat-i) evil thoughts of (do-oo) duality; once you (tiaag-i) forsake (tisah-i) that, You will (so-oo = sleep) experience (sukh) peace (sahjey) naturally.
ਯਯਾ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਸਰਨਾ ॥ ਜਿਹ ਆਸਰ ਇਆ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰਨਾ ॥
Ya▫yā jā▫e parahu sanṯ sarnā. Jih āsar i▫ā bẖavjal ṯarnā.
Yayya. (Jaaey parah-u = go and be) place yourself in (sarna = sanctuary/care) guidance of (sant) the guru (jih) by whose (aasar) support/guidance one (tarna) gets across/overcomes (bhavjal-u) the world ocean of vices.
ਯਯਾ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸੋਊ ॥ ਏਕ ਨਾਮ ਲੇ ਮਨਹਿ ਪਰੋਊ ॥
Ya▫yā janam na āvai so▫ū. Ėk nām le manėh paro▫ū.
Continuing with the letter Yayya, (so-oo) that person (na aavai = does not come) is not (janam-i = in birth) born again, who (pro-oo) strings (eyk) the one (naam) Naam (manah-i) in the mind with Divine virtues as in a rosary i.e. conforms to the mind to Divine virtues and commands.
ਯਯਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੀਅਰੈ ਏਕ ॥੧੪॥
Ya▫yā janam na hārī▫ai gur pūre kī tek. Nānak ṯih sukẖ pā▫i▫ā jā kai hī▫arai ek. ||14||
Yayya. We (na haareeai) shall not fail in (janam) human birth i.e. in achieving union with the Creator, if we take (tteyk) support/guidance of (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru, who guides to live by Naam.
Says fifth Nanak: (Tih) that person (paaia) attains (sukh) the comfort of union with the Creator, who keeps commands of the One Almighty (heearai) in mind – and hence is free from vices. 14.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਬਸਿ ਰਹੇ ਈਤ ਊਤ ਕੇ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪੀਐ ਨੀਤ ॥੧॥
Salok. Anṯar man ṯan bas rahe īṯ ūṯ ke mīṯ. Gur pūrai upḏesi▫ā Nānak japī▫ai nīṯ. ||1||
Slok. Naam which is (meet) friend/helpful (eet) here and (oot) in the hereafter, (bas-i rahe = abides) is present antar-i) in (man) mind and (tan) body, i.e. guides thoughts and deeds. (Poorai) the prefect (gur) guru (updeysia) teaches to (neet) ever (japeeai) remember/obey Naam, says fifth Nanak. 1.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਤਾਸੁ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਇਹ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਛਿਅ ਛਾਡਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. An▫ḏin simrahu ṯās ka▫o jo anṯ sahā▫ī ho▫e. Ih bikẖi▫ā ḏin cẖār cẖẖi▫a cẖẖād cẖali▫o sabẖ ko▫e.
Paurri. (Andin = daily) ever (simrah-u) remember/obey (taas-u kau) that Naam by which – one does not transgress/commit vices in life and – (hoey) is (sahaaee) helpful (ant-i) at the end – when account of deeds is taken.
(Ih) this (bikhia = poison) pleasure of world-play is (chaar-i) four or (chhia) six (din) days, i.e. is short-lived and one (chalio = departs) dies (chhaad-i) leaving (sabh-u koey) everything behind.
ਕਾ ਕੋ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਧੀਆ ॥ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਲੀਆ ॥
Kā ko māṯ piṯā suṯ ḏẖī▫ā. Garih baniṯā kacẖẖ sang na lī▫ā.
(Ka ko = whose) no one is (maat) mother, (pitaa) father, (sut) son, (dheeaa) daughter, (banit) spouse or (grih) house of anyone forever. One (leeaa) takes (kachh-u na) nothing (sang-i) with the soul on death.
ਐਸੀ ਸੰਚਿ ਜੁ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
Aisī sancẖ jo binsaṯ nāhī. Paṯ seṯī apunai gẖar jāhī.
Therefore o’ mortal, (sanch-i) gather such wealth as (binsat naahi) does not perish, i.e. obtain awareness of Naam, by which you (jaahi = go) are admitted into (apunai) own (ghar-i) your abode from where you came, i.e. be united with the Creator, (seyti) with (pat-i) honour.
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੧੫॥
Sāḏẖsang kal kīrṯan gā▫i▫ā. Nānak ṯe ṯe bahur na ā▫i▫ā. ||15||
Those who (gaaia = sing) praise and emulate (keertan-u = praise) Divine virtues (sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) the guru along-with the holy congregation; (tey tey) they all (na aaiaa = do not come) are not born (bahur-i) again. 15.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕੁਲੀਨ ਚਤੁਰ ਮੁਖਿ ਙਿਆਨੀ ਧਨਵੰਤ ॥ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੧॥
Salok. Aṯ sunḏar kulīn cẖaṯur mukẖ ṇyi▫ānī ḏẖanvanṯ. Mirṯak kahī▫ahi nānkā jih parīṯ nahī bẖagvanṯ. ||1||
Slok. A person may be (at-i sundar) very beautiful/handsome, (kuleen) of high lineage, (chatur) clever, (much-i ngniaani = with knowledge in mouth) one who remembers scriptures by heart and (dhanvant) wealthy.
That person is (kaheeai) called (mirtak) dead, i.e. s/he falls prey to vices, (jih) who does not have (preet-i) love for (bhagvant) the Master of destiny, Says fifth Nanak. 1.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਙੰਙਾ ਖਟੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਇ ਙਿਆਤਾ ॥ ਪੂਰਕੁ ਕੁੰਭਕ ਰੇਚਕ ਕਰਮਾਤਾ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Ńańā kẖat sāsṯar ho▫e ńi▫āṯā. Pūrak kumbẖak recẖak karmāṯā.
Paurri. By the letter Gnanga. One (hoey) may be (ngniaata) knowledgeable about (khatt saastr = six shastras – Saankh, Niaaey, Vaisheyshak, Meemaamsa, Yog, and Vedanta) scriptures and (karmaata) practitioner breath control by way of (poorak, kumbhak, reychak) inhaling, holding the breath and exhaling, called Pranayam.
ਙਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ॥ ਸੋਮਪਾਕ ਅਪਰਸ ਉਦਿਆਨੀ ॥
Ńi▫ān ḏẖi▫ān ṯirath isnānī. Sompāk apras uḏi▫ānī.
(Ngniaan) have knowledge of scriptures, (dhiaan) do meditation and (isnaani) bathe at (teerath) holy places. (sompaak) eat self-cooked food, be (aparas) untouched by others and (udiaani) live in jungles, i.e. considers the self, pious.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਹੇਤਾ ॥ ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੋਊ ਅਨੇਤਾ ॥
Rām nām sang man nahī heṯā. Jo kacẖẖ kīno so▫ū aneṯā.
If s/he does not have (heyta) love (sang-i = with) for, i.e. does not conform to (raam naam) Divine virtues and commands (man-) in mind, then (jo kachh-u) whatever (keeno) s/he does (so-oo) that is (aneta) wasted.
ਉਆ ਤੇ ਊਤਮੁ ਗਨਉ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਬਸਹਿ ਗੁਪਾਲਾ ॥੧੬॥
U▫ā ṯe ūṯam gan▫o cẖandalā. Nānak jih man basėh gupālā. ||16||
Says Nanak: (Ganau = count) consider a (chandaala) an outcast, (jih man) in whose mind (gupaala) the Master of the universe (basah-i) abides, (ootam) better (tey) than (uaa = that) the person described above. 16.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਕੁੰਟ ਚਾਰਿ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕੀ ਰੇਖ ॥ ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਲੇਖ ॥੧॥
Salok. Kunt cẖār ḏah ḏis bẖarame karam kiraṯ kī rekẖ. Sūkẖ ḏūkẖ mukaṯ jon Nānak likẖi▫o lekẖ. ||1||
The humans (bhrame) wander (chaar-i) four (kuntt) quarters – North, South, East, West, and (dah) ten (dis) directions – four sides, four corners, above and below i.e. all over, (reykh = lines on hands and feet) according to written destiny, based on (kirat-i karam) past deeds.
Similarly, (sookh) comfort and (dookh) pain, (jon-i) births in various life forms or (mukt-i) freedom from these is all due to (likhio leykh) written account of their deeds, i.e. are governed by deeds. 1.
ਪਵੜੀ ॥ ਕਕਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਊ ॥ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਤ ਕੋਊ ॥
Pavṛī. Kakā kāran karṯā so▫ū. Likẖi▫o lekẖ na metaṯ ko▫ū.
Pavrri. By the letter Kakka. (Kaaran) the cause of all that happens is (karta) the Creator (so-oo = that) IT-self; everything happens according to (likhio leykh-u) the commands written by God, (na ko-oo) no one (meyttat) can erase that.
ਨਹੀ ਹੋਤ ਕਛੁ ਦੋਊ ਬਾਰਾ ॥ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਭੂਲਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
Nahī hoṯ kacẖẖ ḏo▫ū bārā. Karnaihār na bẖūlanhārā.
And (nahi kachh-u) nothing (hot) happens (do-oo baara) at second attempt, because (karnaihaar-u) the Creator (na bhoolahaara) does not make mistakes.
ਕਾਹੂ ਪੰਥੁ ਦਿਖਾਰੈ ਆਪੈ ॥ ਕਾਹੂ ਉਦਿਆਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਪਛੁਤਾਪੈ ॥
Kāhū panth ḏikẖārai āpai. Kāhū uḏi▫ān bẖarmaṯ pacẖẖuṯāpai.
(Kaahoo) to some (aapey) IT-self (dikhaarai) shows (panth-u) the way – obey Divine commands with the guru’s guidance, while makes (kaahoo = some) others to (bhramat) wander in (udiaan) jungles – i.e. remain directionless and (pachhutaapai) repent later.
ਆਪਨ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕੀਨੋ ॥ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਦੀਨੋ ਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੧੭॥
Āpan kẖel āp hī kīno. Jo jo ḏīno so Nānak līno. ||17||
(Aapan = own, kheyl = game) this is all the Creator’s play and (aap hi) IT-self (keeno) does, i.e. everything happens according to by Divine laws. The creatures (leeno) receive what the Master (deeno) gives – based on deeds, says fifth Nanak. 17.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਖਾਤ ਖਰਚਤ ਬਿਲਛਤ ਰਹੇ ਟੂਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਹਿ ਸੁਮਾਰ ॥੧॥
Salok. Kẖāṯ kẖarcẖaṯ bilcẖẖaṯ rahe tūt na jāhi bẖandār. Har har japaṯ anek jan Nānak nāhi sumār. ||1||
Slok. Those with the wealth of awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands (khaat = eat) use it as mainstay for life, and (kharchat = spend) share it with others; they (rahey) are (bilchhat) happy doing so with this (bhaddaar = store) treasure of Naam, which (na jaah-i) does not (ttoott-i) get exhausted.
(Aneyk) numerous (jan = servants) people (japat) remember/conform to (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam; they are (naah-i = not) beyond (sumaar) estimate, says (jan) humble fifth Nanak. 1.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਖਖਾ ਖੂਨਾ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਕੈ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ ਜੋ ਦੇਨਾ ਸੋ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਓ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Kẖakẖā kẖūnā kacẖẖ nahī ṯis samrath kai pāhi. Jo ḏenā so ḏe rahi▫o bẖāvai ṯah ṯah jāhi.
Paurri. By the letter Khakha. (Kachh-u nahi) nothing ever (khoona) falls short (kai paah-i) with the (samrath) the omnipotent (tis-u = that) Master. IT (dey rahio) keeps giving (so) that (jo deyna) what is to be given – the creatures can get nothing more – they (jaah-i) go (tah tah) wherever the Almighty (bhaavai) likes.
ਖਰਚੁ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਇਆ ਭਗਤਨ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ ਖਿਮਾ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਅਨਦ ਸਹਜ ਜਪਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸ ॥
Kẖaracẖ kẖajānā nām ḏẖan i▫ā bẖagṯan kī rās. Kẖimā garībī anaḏ sahj japaṯ rahėh guṇṯās.
The (khajaana) treasure from where to (kharach) spend/live by is (dhan-u) the wealth of awareness of (naam) Divine virtues and commands; (iaa) this is (raas-i) the capital/wealth of (bhagtan) the devotees.
In the spirit of (khima = forgiveness) tolerance and (gareebi) humility, they (rahah-i) live (japat rahah-i = remembering) praising the Almighty, (guntaas) the treasure of virtues; this brings (anad) bliss and (sahj) poise.
ਖੇਲਹਿ ਬਿਗਸਹਿ ਅਨਦ ਸਿਉ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥ ਸਦੀਵ ਗਨੀਵ ਸੁਹਾਵਨੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮਾਲ ॥
Kẖelėh bigsahi anaḏ si▫o jā ka▫o hoṯ kirpāl. Saḏīv ganīv suhāvane rām nām garihi māl.
(Ja kau) those on whom the Creator is (kripaal) kind, they (bigsah-i) enjoy (kheylah-i) playing the game of life (siau) with (anad) joy
With (maal = possessions) the wealth of awareness of (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty (grih-i = at home) in the mind, they are (sadeev) ever (ganeev) wealthy/keep Naam in mind and (suhaavney) be happy.
ਖੇਦੁ ਨ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਡਾਨੁ ਤਿਹ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਣਿਆ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਪਰੀ ॥੧੮॥
Kẖeḏ na ḏūkẖ na dān ṯih jā ka▫o naḏar karī. Nānak jo parabẖ bẖāṇi▫ā pūrī ṯinā parī. ||18||
(Ja kau) those on whom the Almighty (kari = does, nadar-i = sight) notices for their deeds, – they are approved for union with the Almighty; (tih) they do not face (kheyd-u) sorrow, (dookh-u) suffering of (ddaan-u) punishment, i.e. they do not suffer in life or in the hereafter.
(Jo) those (bhaaniaa) approved by (prabh) the Almighty their wishes (poori pari) are fulfilled, says fifth Nanak. 18.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਗਨਿ ਮਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਚਲਨੋ ਲੋਗ ॥ ਆਸ ਅਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਰੋਗ ॥੧॥
Salok. Gan min ḏekẖhu manai māhi sarpar cẖalno log. Ās aniṯ gurmukẖ mitai Nānak nām arog. ||1||
Slok. (Gan-i = count, min-i = measure) reflect (maah-i) in mind and (deykhah-u) see, that (log) everyone in the world (sarpar) certainly (chalno) departs.
That is why (gurmukhi) one who follows the guru’s teachings (mittai = erased) gives up (aas) the wish for (anit = impermanent) transitory gains and pleasures, and lives by Naam, says fifth Nanak. 1.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਗਗਾ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹੁ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਜਪਿ ਨੀਤ ॥ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਸਾਸਾ ਦੇਹ ਕਾ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਕਰਿਹੋ ਮੀਤ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Gagā gobiḏ guṇ ravhu sās sās jap nīṯ. Kahā bisāsā ḏeh kā bilam na kariho mīṯ.
Pauri. By the letter Gagga. (Ravah-u) remember (gun) the virtues of (gobind) the Master of the universe (saas-i saas-i) with every breath; (neet) ever (jap-i) recount and conform to them.
Do not (bilam kariho) delay this because (kahaa = what?) there is no (bisaasa) surety of life in (deyh) the body, i.e. one can die any time, o (meet) my friend/mind.
ਨਹ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਨਹ ਜੋਬਨੈ ਨਹ ਬਿਰਧੀ ਕਛੁ ਬੰਧੁ ॥ ਓਹ ਬੇਰਾ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਜਉ ਆਇ ਪਰੈ ਜਮ ਫੰਧੁ ॥
Nah bārik nah jobnai nah birḏẖī kacẖẖ banḏẖ. Oh berā nah būjẖī▫ai ja▫o ā▫e parai jam fanḏẖ.
There is (na kachh-u = not any) way to stop death (nah) neither when (baarik) a child, (jobnai) in youth nor (birdhi) in old age – it can come any time.
We cannot (bujheeai) forecast (oh) that (beyra) time (jau) when (phand-u) the noose of (jam) the messenger of death (aaey parai) is put, i.e. the time of death is not known to anyone.
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਚਤੁਰ ਪੇਖਿ ਰਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਇਹ ਠਾਇ ॥ ਛਾਡਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਗਈ ਮੂੜ ਤਹਾ ਲਪਟਾਹਿ ॥
Gi▫ānī ḏẖi▫ānī cẖaṯur pekẖ rahan nahī ih ṯẖā▫e. Cẖẖād cẖẖād saglī ga▫ī mūṛ ṯahā laptāhi.
One (peykh-i) see (giaani) the learned, (dhiaani) the meditators and (chatur) the clever ones; none of them (rahan) stays (ih tthaaey = this place) in world permanently.
But (moorr) the foolish people (lapttaah-i) cling to (tahaa) those things which (sagli) every one (chhaadd-i gaee) departs leaving behind.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਰਹੈ ਜਾਹੂ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਏ ਸਫਲ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਅਹਿ ਸੁਹਾਗ॥੧੯॥
Gur parsāḏ simraṯ rahai jāhū masṯak bẖāg. Nānak ā▫e safal ṯe jā ka▫o pari▫ahi suhāg. ||19||
Says fifth Nanak: One (jaahoo) who on whose (mastak-i = on forehead) destiny (bhaag) good fortune is written (simrat rahai) lives in conformance to Divine virtues and commands (gurprasaad-i) with the guru’s grace/guidance.
(Aaey = coming) human birth is (saphal) successful those soul-wives (ja kau) who have (suhaag) the good fortune of finding (priah-i) the beloved Almighty-husband, says fifth Nanak. 19.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਘੋਖੇ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਸਭ ਆਨ ਨ ਕਥਤਉ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਹੁਣਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
Salok. Gẖokẖe sāsṯar beḏ sabẖ ān na kẖathaṯa▫o ko▫e. Āḏ jugāḏī huṇ hovaṯ Nānak ekai so▫e. ||1||
Slok. The Creator alone has existed (aad-i) from the beginning/time immemorial and (jugaadi = beginning of time) through the ages, exists (hun-i) now and (hovat) will exist in future.
I have (ghokhey) searched/studied (sabh) all (saastra beyd) scriptures, (na koey) none (katathau) talks of (aan) anyone else like this says Nanak. 1.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਘਘਾ ਘਾਲਹੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਏਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦੂਸਰ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਹ ਹੋਆ ਨਹ ਹੋਵਨਾ ਜਤ ਕਤ ਓਹੀ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Gẖagẖā gẖālhu manėh eh bin har ḏūsar nāhi. Nah ho▫ā nah hovnā jaṯ kaṯ ohī samāhi.
Paurri. By the letter Ghagha. (Ghaalah-u) be certain in (manah-i) in your mind that there is (doosar naahi) none (bin-u) except (har-i) the Creator who is eternal. (Nah hoaa) none was and (nah hovna) none will be; (ohi) only IT samaaee) pervades (jat kat) everywhere.
ਘੂਲਹਿ ਤਉ ਮਨ ਜਉ ਆਵਹਿ ਸਰਨਾ ॥ ਨਾਮ ਤਤੁ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਨਹਚਰਨਾ ॥
Gẖūlėh ṯa▫o man ja▫o āvahi sarnā. Nām ṯaṯ kal mėh punharcẖanā.
(Ma) my mind, (jau) if you (aavah-i) come into (sarna) IT’s care i.e. remember and obey Divine commands you will be (ghoolah-i = dissolved) absorbed in IT’s virtues.
Remembrance of (naam) Divine virtues is (tat) the essence (mah-i) in this (kal-i) age of conflicts, instead of (punahcharna) repeated actions/rituals.
ਘਾਲਿ ਘਾਲਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਥਿਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Gẖāl gẖāl anik pacẖẖuṯāvahi. Bin har bẖagaṯ kahā thiṯ pāvahi.
(Anik) innumerable persons (ghaal-i ghaal-i = repeatedly toil) try for peace but fail and (pachhutaavah-i) repent because one (kaha = how?) cannot (paavah-i) attain (thit) stability/peace of mind without (bhagat-i) dedication to (har-i) the Almighty i.e. without living by Divine virtues and commands.
ਘੋਲਿ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਿਹ ਪੀਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਆ ॥੨੦॥
Gẖol mahā ras amriṯ ṯih pī▫ā. Nānak har gur jā ka▫o ḏī▫ā. ||20||
Says Nanak: (Ja kau) one to whom (gur-i) the guru, the embodiment of (har-i) the Creator (deea) gives awareness of (ammrit-u) life-giving elixir, i.e. Divine virtues. (Tih) that person (ghol-i) dissolves the virtues in the guru’s teachings and (peeaa) drinks (maha ras) the great potion i.e. assimilates Divine virtues and acts accordingly with the guru’s guidance. 20.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਙਣਿ ਘਾਲੇ ਸਭ ਦਿਵਸ ਸਾਸ ਨਹ ਬਢਨ ਘਟਨ ਤਿਲੁ ਸਾਰ ॥ ਜੀਵਨ ਲੋਰਹਿ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਊ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
Salok. Ńaṇ gẖāle sabẖ ḏivas sās nah badẖan gẖatan ṯil sār. Jīvan lorėh bẖaram moh Nānak ṯe▫ū gavār. ||1||
Slok. The Creator (ghaaley) sends (sabh) all the creatures to take birth with (gnan-i = counted) given number of (divas) days and (saas) breaths for life; they cannot be (badhan) increased or (ghatan) reduced (til-u saar = equal to sesame seed) even a bit.
Says fifth Nanak: Those under (bharam) delusion (lorrah-i) seek/want longer (jeevan) life because of (moh) lure of pleasures, (teyoo) they are (gavaar) foolish. 1.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਙੰਙਾ ਙ੍ਰਾਸੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਹ ਜੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਨ ॥ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Ńańā ńarāsai kāl ṯih jo sākaṯ parabẖ kīn. Anik jon janmėh marėh āṯam rām na cẖīn.
Paurri. By the letter Gnagna. (Kaal) death/vices (gnrasai = devours) afflict (tih) those whom (prabh) the Creator (keen) made (saakat) seekers of material benefits/pleasures.
They do not (cheen) recognize (raam-u) the Creator (aatam) within the mind and keep (janamah-i) being born in (anik) numerous (jon-i) life forms and (marah-i) dying.
ਙਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਤਾਹੂ ਕਉ ਆਏ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਹ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਏ ॥
Ńi▫ān ḏẖi▫ān ṯāhū ka▫o ā▫e. Kar kirpā jih āp ḏivā▫e.
(Gniaan) understanding and (dhiaan) paying attention/obeying Divine commands (aaey) come to mind (taahoo) those, (jih) whom the Master (kar-i kirpa) kindly (divaaey) causes to be given – by leading to the guru.
ਙਣਤੀ ਙਣੀ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਛੂਟੈ ॥ ਕਾਚੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਫੂਟੈ ॥
Ńaṇṯī ńaṇī nahī ko▫ū cẖẖūtai. Kācẖī gāgar sarpar fūtai.
(Nahi ko-oo) no one (chhootai) can escape death by (ngnati ngnani) counting – his/her perceived good deeds.
The body is like a (kaachi) unbaked (gaagar-i) earthen pitcher, which (sarpar) certainly (phoottai) breaks/dies.
ਸੋ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਿਹ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਪਿਆ॥ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹ ਛਪਿਆ ॥੨੧॥
So jīvaṯ jih jīvaṯ japi▫ā. Pargat bẖa▫e Nānak nah cẖẖapi▫ā. ||21||
(Jih) those who (japia) remember obey Divine commands (jeevat = living) the eternal Master, (so) they (jeevat) remain alive i.e. do not keep taking births to die, but get to their permanent abode, the Creator.
Such people (pargatt bhaey) show up/are recognized and cannot remain (chhapia = concealed) un-noticed, says fifth Nanak. 21.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਚਿਤਿ ਚਿਤਵਉ ਚਰਣਾਰਬਿੰਦ ਊਧ ਕਵਲ ਬਿਗਸਾਂਤ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਏ ਆਪਹਿ ਗਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਮਤਾਂਤ ॥੧॥
Salok. Cẖiṯ cẖiṯva▫o cẖarṇārbinḏ ūḏẖ kaval bigsāʼnṯ. Pargat bẖa▫e āpėh gobinḏ Nānak sanṯ maṯāʼnṯ. ||1||
When I (chitvau) remember/keep (charan-arbind = lotus feet) commands of the Creator (chit-i) in mind, (oodh kaval = drooping lotus) the withering mind (bigsaant) blossoms, i.e. one fallen to vices gets strength to overcome them.
Says fifth Nanak: By following the (mataant) the teachings of the guru, (gobind) the Master of the universe (aapah-i) IT-self (pragatt bhaey) manifests in the mind. 1.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਚਚਾ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਗੁਰ ਲਾਗਾ ॥ ਧਨਿ ਧਨਿ ਉਆ ਦਿਨ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Cẖacẖā cẖaran kamal gur lāgā. Ḏẖan ḏẖan u▫ā ḏin sanjog sabẖāgā.
Paurri. By the letter Chacha. (Ooa) that (din) day is (dhan-i dhan-i) greatly blessed, (sanjog) auspicious and (sabhaaga) fortunate when one (laaga) touches (charan kamal) the lotus feet of the guru i.e. when one finds the guru and starts following his teachings.
ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਇਓ ॥ ਭਈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤਬ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਓ ॥
Cẖār kunt ḏah ḏis bẖaram ā▫i▫o. Bẖa▫ī kirpā ṯab ḏarsan pā▫i▫o.
One may (bhram-i aaio) wander (chaar-i) the four (kunt) the four quarters – North, South, East, West – and (dah) ten (dis) ten directions – four sides, four corners, above, below i.e. all over the globe. But can (paaio) obtain (darsan-u) sight/vision of the Almighty within, only when (bhaee kripa) when Divine is kind to lead to the guru.
ਚਾਰ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਸਭ ਦੂਆ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੂਆ ॥
Cẖār bicẖār binsi▫o sabẖ ḏū▫ā. Sāḏẖsang man nirmal hū▫ā.
(Man-u) the mind (hooaa) is (nirmal) purified – of other ideas – (sang-i) with company/guidance of the guru. (Bichaar) thoughts become (chaar-i = beautiful) virtuous and (sabh) all (dooa = second) other ideas (binsio) are banished i.e. one thinks of none equal to the Creator.
ਚਿੰਤ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਜਿਹ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਾ ॥੨੨॥
Cẖinṯ bisārī ek ḏaristeṯā. Nānak gi▫ān anjan jih neṯarā. ||22||
Says Nanak: (Jih) one whose (neytra) eyes i.e. whose mind, receives (anjan-u = eye medicine) the medicine of (giaan) wisdom for inner vision, from the guru, that person (bisaari) forgets (chint) worrying about other things and (dristteyta) sees (eyk) the One Creator within. 22.
