Sirīrāg mėhlā 4 vaṇjārā   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯ nām gur parsāḏ

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Siriraag, about (vanjaara) the roving merchant invoking the one all-pervasive Creator who may be known with grace/guidance of the true guru

Note: The heading of this composition is ‘Vanjaara’ meaning a roving or travelling merchant. He is given funds by the business owner for trading. Vanjaara is used as metaphor for the creature who is given awareness of Naam/Divine commands to lead life by them.

Har har uṯam nām hai jin siri▫ā sabẖ ko▫e jī▫o   Har jī▫a sabẖe parṯipālḏā gẖat gẖat rama▫ī▫ā so▫e

(Naam-u) commands/Divine laws of (har-i har-i) the Almighty, (jin-i) who (siriaa) created (sabh-u koey) everything/everyone are (ootam-u) supreme, i.e. apply everywhere.

(Har-i) the Almighty (pratipaalda) nurtures (sabhey) all (jeea) creatures; (Soey) the same (ramaeeaa) all-pervasive Almighty is present (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every being.

So har saḏā ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai ṯis bin avar na ko▫e   Jo mohi mā▫i▫ā cẖiṯ lā▫iḏe se cẖẖod cẖale ḏukẖ ro▫e   Jan Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā har anṯ sakẖā▫ī ho▫e ||1||

We should (sadaa) ever (dhiaaeeai = pay attention) obey (so = that) the (har-i) Almighty; (Na koey) not anyone (avar-u) else (bin-u) except (tis-u = that) the Almighty.

Those who (laaeydey) engage their (chit-u) mind under influence (moh-i) under lure of (maaiaa) temptations in the world-play, they (chodd-i chaley) depart from the world (roey) wailing in (dukh-u) pangs of separation from, i.e. for failing to unite with, the Almighty.

One who (dhiaaiaa = pays attention) obeys Naam/Divine commands/Divine laws, (har-i) the Almighty (hoey) is (sakhaaee) helpful, i.e. is kind to unite with IT-self, says (jan-u) humble fourth Nanak. 1.

Mai har bin avar na ko▫e   Har gur sarṇā▫ī pā▫ī▫ai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā vadbẖāg parāpaṯ ho▫e ||1|| rahā▫o

(Mai) I have (na koey = not any) no (avar-u) other Master than (har-i) the Almighty.

O my (mitra) friend (vanjaariaa = travelling merchant) human being born to live by Naam, (har-i) the Almighty (paaeeai) is found (sarnaaee = in sanctuary) with care and guidance of (guru) the guru; and the guru (hoey) is (praapat-i) found (vaddbhaag-i) with good fortune/Divine grace. 1.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

Sanṯ janā viṇ bẖā▫ī▫ā har kinai na pā▫i▫ā nā▫o   vicẖ ha▫umai karam kamāvḏe ji▫o vesu▫ā puṯninā▫o   Piṯā jāṯ ṯā ho▫ī▫ai gur ṯuṯẖā kare pasā▫o

Awareness of (naau) Naam is not (paaiaa) obtained (kinai) by anyone (vin-u) except (bhaaieea = brothers) company/guidance of (sant janaa = saints) the seekers.

Those who do not receive awareness of Naam, (kamaavdey) do (karam) deeds (vich-i) in (haumai = ego) own will; they do not know the Master (jiau) like (put-u) son of (veysuaa) a prostitute is (ninaau) without name – of the father.

One (hoeeai) has (jaat-i = caste) name of (pitaa) the Almighty-father, i.e. acknowledges and obeys the Almighty, (ta) when (guru) the guru (tutthaa) is pleased (karey = does, pasaau = spread) imparts – awareness of Naam.

vadbẖāgī gur pā▫i▫ā har ahinis lagā bẖā▫o   Jan Nānak barahm pacẖẖāṇi▫ā har kīraṯ karam kamā▫o ||2||

(Guru) the guru is (paaiaa) found (vaddbhaagi) with good fortune; one then (laaga) bears (bhaau) love for the Almighty (ahinis-i) day and night, i.e. all the time.

(Jan) humble (nanak-i) fourth Nanak (pachhaaniaa) recognized/found (brahm-u) the Creator within – by following the guru – and (kamaay) does (karam) acts of (keerat-i) praising/obeying (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

Man har har lagā cẖā▫o   Gur pūrai nām driṛ▫ā▫i▫ā har mili▫ā har parabẖ nā▫o ||1|| rahā▫o

My (man-i) the mind (lagaa) bears (chaau) yearning for (har-i har-i) the Almighty. (Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

My mind has developed affection for God. (This happened because) the perfect guru made my belief in God firm and with that I found God, God’s virtues. 1.

Pause and contemplate.

Jab lag joban sās hai ṯab lag nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e   Cẖalḏi▫ā nāl har cẖalsī har anṯe la▫e cẖẖadā▫e   Ha▫o balihārī ṯin ka▫o jin har man vuṯẖā ā▫e

O human being (jab lag-u) as long there is (saas-u) breathing/life (joban-i = in youth – metaphor for) in the body, (dhiaaey) pay attention to/obey Naam/Divine commands, i.e. play your role in life.

(Har-i) the Almighty (chalsi) shall go (naal-i) with you when (chaldia) departing from this world; (har-i) the Almighty (laey chddaaey) gets delivered – from Divine justice – (antey) at the end, i.e. account of deeds is taken and consequences imposed.

(Hau) I (balihaari = am sacrifice) adore (tin kau) those in (Jin) whose (har-i) the Almighty (aaey) comes and (vutthaa) abides, i.e. those who find God.

On the other hand those (jini) who do not (cheytiao) remember/obey Naam/Divine commands, they (gaey) go (pachhutaaey) repenting, I .e. they are detained by Divine justice.

Only those for whom (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-i) Master (likhiaa) has written (mastak-i = on the forehead) in destiny (dhur-i) at the source, (dhiaaey) pay attention to/obey Naam says (Jan) humble fourth Nanak. 3.

Man har har parīṯ lagā▫e   vadbẖāgī gur pā▫i▫ā gur sabḏī pār lagẖā▫e ||1|| rahā▫o

O (man = mind) human being (lagaaey) develop (preet-i) love/obedience for (har-i har-i) the Almighty – with the guru’s guidance.

(Guru) the guru (paaiaa) is found (vaddbhaagi = with good fortune) with Divine grace; obedience (sabdi = to the word) to guidance of (guru) the guru (laghaaey) ferries (paar-i) to the far bank – of the world-ocean of vices, i.e. the guru enables to overcome vices and be united with the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

(Har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (upaaidaa) creates (aap-u = self) creature with IT-self present in him/her; (har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (deyvai = gives) the wherewithal and IT-self (ley-i) receives being in the creature.

(Har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (bhulaaeyda) misleads (bharam-i) in delusion and (aapey) IT-self (dey-i) imparts (mat-i) sense – to obey Naam with the guru’s guidance.

(Gurmukhaa) those who follow the guru have (pargaas-u = enlightenment) awareness of Naam (man-i) in the minds; but (sey) they are (keyee key-i) some (virley) rare ones.

Ha▫o balihārī ṯin ka▫o jin har pā▫i▫ā gurmaṯe   Jan Nānak kamal pargāsi▫ā man har har vuṯẖ▫ṛā he ||4||

(Hau) I (balihaari = am sacrifice) adore (tin kau) those who (paaiaa) find (paiaa) God (gurmati) with the guru’s counsel.

The mind (Kamal-u) lotus flower (nanak-i) of fourth Nanak, the seekers (pargaasiaa) has blossomed from the time (har-i har-i) the Almighty (hey) has (vutthrra) abided (man-i) in the mind. 4.

Man har har japan kare   Har gur sarṇā▫ī bẖaj pa▫o jinḏū sabẖ kilvikẖ ḏukẖ parhare ||1|| rahā▫o

Now (man-i) the mind (karey) does (japan-u) remembrance and obedience of (har-i har-i) the Almighty

O (jindoo = life) my soul (bhaj-i pau) run to be (sarnaaee = sanctuary) in care and obedience of the Almighty guided by (guru) the guru; this (parharey) keep away (sabh) all (kilvikh) transgressions and resultant (dukh) suffering. 1.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

Gẖat gẖat rama▫ī▫ā man vasai ki▫o pā▫ī▫ai kiṯ bẖaṯ   Gur pūrā saṯgur bẖetī▫ai har ā▫e vasai man cẖiṯ

Question: (RamaeeaaGod (vasai) abides (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every mind; (kiau) how and by (kit-u) what (bhat-i) method to (paaeeai) find/recognize IT.

Answer: When (guru) the great (poora) perfect guru (bheytteeai) is met and followed to obey Naam, (har-i) God (aaey) comes and (vasai) abides (man-i) in mind (chit-u) remembrance, i.e. God is present within but forgotten. The true guru guides to rediscover.

Naam/Divine commands is (mai) my (dhar) support/guide and (adhaar-u) mainstay; (mat-i) sense/understanding and (gat-i) freedom from vices comes (tey) with awareness (naamai) of Naam.

(Mai) I have (visaah-u) faith in living by Naam of (har-i har-i) the Almighty; I owe my (jat-i) status and (pat-i) honour (naamey) to practice of Naam (hi) alone.

I (dhiaaiaa) pay attention to/obey Naam, and once (ratrraa) imbued (rang-i) with love, I am always (rat-i) imbued, (rang-i) love of (har-i) the Almighty. 5.

Har ḏẖi▫āvahu har parabẖ saṯ   Gur bacẖnī har parabẖ jāṇi▫ā sabẖ har parabẖ ṯe uṯpaṯ ||1|| rahā▫o

O human beings (dhiaavh-u = pay attention) obey (har-i) the Almighty, the only (sat-i) the Eternal (har-i) Almighty (prabh-u) Master.

The Almighty present within is (jaaniaa) recognised (bachni = with words) with guidance of (guru) the guru; all (utpat-i) creation is (tey) from (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master 1.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

Those (Jin kau) in whose destiny it is (likhiaa) written (poorab-i) from the past/ by the Creator, (sey) they (aaey) come and (miley) meet (paas-i) with, i.e. seek guidance of, the guru.

O my (mitra) friend (vanjaariaa = roving merchant) human being seeking to live by Naam with (bhaaey) love of (seyvak) servant/devotion soul God is realized when the mind is illuminated with Divine virtues by the guru. Those (merchants) souls are great who (load their carts with) accumulate consequences of deeds done (with the capital of) based on Divine virtues.

But (guru) the guru is (paaiaa) found/followed by (tin) those (jinaa) with whom (aap-i = self) the Almighty is (tutthaa) pleased, i.e. the guru is found with Divine grace. 6.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.
