ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਧਨੁ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ ਤੂੰ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਜੋਰੁ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

Mājẖ mėhlā 5. Man ṯan ṯerā ḏẖan bẖī ṯerā.   Ŧūʼn ṯẖākur su▫āmī parabẖ merā.   Jī▫o pind sabẖ rās ṯumārī ṯerā jor gopālā jī▫o. ||1||

 

 Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. This (man-u = mind) soul and (tan-u) body are (teyra = your) given by You; my (dhan-u) wealth is (bhi) also owed to You; O (prabh-u) Almighty (toon) You are (meyra) my (tthaakur-u) provider and (suaami) Master.

My (jeeo) soul and (pindd-u) body is (raas-i) capital given to conduct business of life, i.e. to lead life; my (joru = strength) ability to act is (tumaara = your) given by You, o (gopaala) Sustainor of the world. 1.

 

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥ ਨਿਵਿ ਨਿਵਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਇਆਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Saḏā saḏā ṯūʼnhai sukẖ▫ḏā▫ī.   Niv niv lāgā ṯerī pā▫ī.   Kār kamāvā je ṯuḏẖ bẖāvā jā ṯūʼn ḏėh ḏa▫i▫ālā jī▫o. ||2||

 

(Toonhai) You alone (sukhdaaee) provide comfort (sadaa sadaa) forever. I (nivi nivi = bow) pay obeisance at (teyree) Your (aaee) feet, i.e. act by Your commands.

I (kaar = task, kamaava = carry out) I obey (jey) when (bhaava = liked) motivated by (tudhu) You; (jaa) when (toon) You (deyh-i) give awareness of Your commands, o (daiaala) compassionate Master. 2.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਲਹਣਾ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਗਹਣਾ ॥ ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਹਣਾ ॥ ਜਿਥੈ ਰਖਹਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੁ ਤਿਥਾਈ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Parabẖ ṯum ṯe lahṇā ṯūʼn merā gahṇā.   Jo ṯūʼn ḏėh so▫ī sukẖ sahṇā.   Jithai rakẖėh baikuʼnṯẖ ṯithā▫ī ṯūʼn sabẖnā ke parṯipālā jī▫o. ||3||

 

I have to (lahana) take (tey) from (tum) You, because You are my (gahna) source – no one else can give. (Jo) whatever You (deyh-i) give, I (sahna) consider (soee) that as (sukh-u) comfort/good for me.

(Jithai) wherever You (rakhah-i) keep (tithaaee) that is (baikuntth-u) paradise for me, o (pratipaala) Sustainor (key) of (sabhna) all, i.e. You care for all. 3.

 

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਏ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਦੁਖਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੩॥੪੦॥

Simar simar Nānak sukẖ pā▫i▫ā.   Āṯẖ pahar ṯere guṇ gā▫i▫ā.   Sagal manorath pūran ho▫e kaḏe na ho▫e ḏukẖālā jī▫o. ||4||33||40||

 

Says fifth Nanak: (Sukh) comfort/peace (paaiaa) is experienced (simar-i simar-i = remembering – twice) by paying attention to Naam/Divine commands in thought and deed; and by (gaiaa = singing) praising and emulating (teyrey) Your (gun) virtues (aatth = eight, pahar = three hours) twenty-four hours of day and night.

(Sagal) All (manorath) aspirations (hoey) are (pooran) fulfilled; and (dukhaala) grief does not (hoey) occur. 4. 33. 40.

Note: Raga Maajh is musical mode for the rainy season. Befittingly this Shabad, and many others preceding and following it in this Raga are about rain. This is one of the characteristics of Gurbani – the contents of compositions match the Ragas. Another Raga for the rainy season is Malaar which comes later in Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Mājẖ mėhlā 5. Pārbarahm parabẖ megẖ paṯẖā▫i▫ā.   Jal thal mahī▫al ḏah ḏis varsā▫i▫ā.   Sāʼnṯ bẖa▫ī bujẖī sabẖ ṯarisnā anaḏ bẖa▫i▫ā sabẖ ṯẖā▫ī jī▫o. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. (Paarbrahm-ithe Supreme (prabh-i) Master (patthaaiaa) sends (meyghu) the cloud; it (varsaaiaa) drops rain (dah = ten, dis-i = in directions) all over (jal-i = on water) on the seas, (thal-i) on land, and (maheeal-i) in space as moisture; this enables good crops.

There (bhaee) is (saant-i = peace) satisfaction, (sabh) all (trisna = craving) hunger is (bujhee) quenched; and there is (anand-u) happiness (sabh = all, thaaee = places) everywhere. 1.

 

ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਸਾਰਾ ॥ ਅਪਨੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੇ ਪਇ ਪੈਰੀ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਮਨਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Sukẖ▫ḏāṯa ḏukẖ bẖaʼnjanhārā.   Āpe bakẖas kare jī▫a sārā.   Apne kīṯe no āp parṯipāle pa▫i pairī ṯisėh manā▫ī jī▫o. ||2||

 

The Almighty (sukhdaata) is giver of peace, and (bhnajanhaara) destroyer of (dukh) grief; (aapey) IT-self (bakhas-i) bestows grace to (karey) take (saara) care of (jeea) creatures, i.e. has provided for sustenance of all.

(Aap-i = self) the Creator (pratipaaley) nurtures IT’s (keetey no) creation; we can (manaaee) propitiate God by (pa-i) falling at IT’s (pairee) feet, i.e. respectfully obeying (tisah-i = that) God. 2.

 

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਇਆ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਭ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀਆ ਜਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Jā kī saraṇ pa▫i▫ā gaṯ pā▫ī▫ai.   Sās sās har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai.   Ŧis bin hor na ḏūjā ṯẖākur sabẖ ṯisai kī▫ā jā▫ī jī▫o. ||3||

 

It is the Almighty by (paiaa) placing the self in (ja ki) whose (saran-i = sanctuary) care and obedience (gat-i) freedom from – vices in life and rebirth on death – (paaeeai) is obtained; we should (dhiaaeeai = pay attention) obey (naam-u) Naam/commands of (har-i) the Almighty (saas-i saas-i) with every breath, i.e. all the time.

There is no (dooja = second) other (tthaakur-u) master (bin-u) except (tis-u = that) the Almighty; (sabh) all (jaaee) places are (keeaa) of (tisai = that) the Almighty, i.e. all creation is domain of the Almighty. 3.

 

ਤੇਰਾ ਮਾਣੁ ਤਾਣੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੇਰਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੪॥੪੧॥

Ŧerā māṇ ṯāṇ parabẖ ṯerā.   Ŧūʼn sacẖā sāhib guṇī gaherā.   Nānak ḏās kahai benanṯī āṯẖ pahar ṯuḏẖ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī jī▫o. ||4||34||41||

 

O (prabh) Almighty, my (maan-u = respect) status and (taan-u) strength is (teyra = your) owed to You. devotee and to overcome vices to obeying Your commands. (Too’n) You, (sachaa = true) the Eternal (sahib-u) Master are (gahyera = deep) profound (gunee) in virtues.

(Daas-u = servant) humble fifth Nanak (kahai = says) makes (beynantee) supplication; may I (dhiaaee = pay attention) obey (tudhu) You (aatth = eight, pahar = three hours) twenty-four hours of day and night. 4. 34. 41.

Mājẖ mėhlā 5. Sabẖe sukẖ bẖa▫e parabẖ ṯuṯẖe.   Gur pūre ke cẖaraṇ man vuṯẖe.   Sahj samāḏẖ lagī liv anṯar so ras so▫ī jāṇai jī▫o. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. (Sabhey) all (sukh) comforts (bhaey) come (tutthey) at pleasure of (prabh) the Almighty is pleased; this happens when (charan) feet of (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru (vutthey) abide (mani) abide (mani) in mind, i.e. by following the guru’s teachings to live by Naam/Divine commands.

Then (sahaj) steadfast (liv) focus in (samaadh-i) meditation (lagi) is attained (antar-i) within; (soee) only (so) that person who gets this (ras-u = taste) experience, (jaanai) knows it. 1.

 

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਨੇਰਾ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Agam agocẖar sāhib merā.   Gẖat gẖat anṯar varṯai nerā.   Saḏā alipaṯ jī▫ā kā ḏāṯā ko virlā āp pacẖẖāṇai jī▫o. ||2||

 

(Sahib-u) the Master (meyra = my) of all is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (agochar-u) not perceived by the senses; but is (neyra) near (vartai) pervading/acting (antar-i) in (ghatt ghatt) every being.

But (daataa) the giver of (jeeaa) souls, i.e. the Creator is (sadaaa) ever (alipat-u = untouched) hidden within; (ko) some (virla) rare person (pachaanai) recognises (aap-u) the self – and finds the Almighty within. 2.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲਣੈ ਕੀ ਏਹ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੀ ॥ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ਅਨਦੁ ਖਸਮ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Parabẖ milṇai kī eh nīsāṇī.   Man iko sacẖā hukam pacẖẖāṇī.   Sahj sanṯokẖ saḏā ṯaripṯāse anaḏ kẖasam kai bẖāṇai jī▫o. ||3||

 

(Neesaanee) the sign of (milney) meeting (prabh) the Almighty is (eyh) this; one (pachaanee) understands/obeys (sachaa) the inevitable (hukam-u) Divine commands (man-i) in mind and obeys.

Those who (sahj-i) steadfastly (santokh-i = contented)obey Divine commands, are (sadaa) ever (triptaasey) satisfied; they are (anad-u) happy (bhaaney) with will (kai) of (khasam) the Master. 3.

 

ਹਥੀ ਦਿਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੈ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਰੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਕੀਏ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਿ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣੇ ਜੀਉ ॥ ੪॥੩੫॥੪੨॥

Hathī ḏiṯī parabẖ ḏevaṇhārai.   Janam maraṇ rog sabẖ nivāre.   Nānak ḏās kī▫e parabẖ apune har kīrṯan rang māṇe jī▫o. ||4||35||42||

 

Awareness of Divine commands (ditee) is given (deyvanhaarai = giver) the beneficent (prabh-i) the Almighty (hatthi) with hands, i.e. by IT-self. This keeps vices away enables union with the Almighty and (nivaarey = keep away) obviate (rog) the suffering in further (janam) births and (maran) deaths.

Those whom (prabh-i) the Almighty (keeay) makes (apuney = own) IT’s (daas = servants) devotees, they (maaney) experience (rang) joy (keertan-i) in praising (hari) the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 4. 35. 42.

ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਕੀਨੀ ਦਇਆ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਵਸੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਦੁਖ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਢਾਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

Mājẖ mėhlā 5. Kīnī ḏa▫i▫ā gopāl gusā▫ī.   Gur ke cẖaraṇ vase man māhī.   Angīkār kī▫ā ṯin karṯai ḏukẖ kā derā dẖāhi▫ā jī▫o. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. When (gopaal = sustained, gusaaee = master of the world) the Almighty (keenee) bestows (daiaa= kindness) grace to lead to the guru; and (charan) feet of (gur) the guru (vasey) abide (maahi) in (man) the mind, i.e. one obeys the guru to live by Naam.

 (Tin = that) the (kartai) Creator (angeekaar-u = takes by side, keeaa = does) accepts to abide in mind and (ddeyra) the abode of (dukh) pain is (ddhaahiaa) demolished, i.e. yearning for God is fulfilled. 1.

 

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਥਾਨੁ ਨ ਦਿਸੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ ਦੂਤ ਦੁਸਮਣ ਸਭਿ ਸਜਣ ਹੋਏ ਏਕੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Man ṯan vasi▫ā sacẖā so▫ī.   Bikẖ▫ṛā thān na ḏisai ko▫ī.   Ḏūṯ ḏusmaṇ sabẖ sajaṇ ho▫e eko su▫āmī āhi▫ā jī▫o. ||2||

 

When (soee = that one) the One (sachaa) Eternal Master (vasiaa) abides (man-i) in mind and (tan-i) body, i.e. when thoughts and actions conform to Divine commands; (na koee = not any) no (thaan-u) place (disai = seen) seems (bikhrraa) difficult, i.e. no difficulty is faced anywhere/with anyone.

(Sabh-i) all (dusman = enemies) bothersome (doot) vices (hoey) become (sajan) friends, i.e. negativity turns to positivity, when (eyko) the One (suaami) Master is (aahiaa) sought/kept in mind. 2.

 

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੈ ॥ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ ਆਪਣਿਆ ਸੰਤਾ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਰਮ ਭੁਲਾਵਾ ਲਾਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Jo kicẖẖ kare so āpe āpai.   Buḏẖ si▫āṇap kicẖẖū na jāpai.   Āpṇi▫ā sanṯā no āp sahā▫ī parabẖ bẖaram bẖulāvā lāhi▫ā jī▫o. ||3||

 

The Almighty is (aapai = self) by IT-self; (jo kichh-u) whatever the Almighty (karey) does, (s-u) that is (aapey) by IT-self; (kichhoo na = not any) no (budh-i) intellect or (siaanap) wisdom (jaapai) seems to work in understanding the Creator’s plays.

(Aapi = self) the Almighty is (sahaaee) helpful (no) to (apniaa = own) IT’s (santaa = saints) devotees; (prabh-i) the Almighty (laahiaa) removes any (bharam) delusion and (bhulaava = straying) other ideas. 3

 

ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੋ ॥ ਸਹਜ ਅਨੰਦ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੬॥੪੩॥

Cẖaraṇ kamal jan kā āḏẖāro.   Āṯẖ pahar rām nām vāpāro.   Sahj anand gāvahi guṇ govinḏ parabẖ Nānak sarab samāhi▫ā jī▫o. ||4||36||43||

 

Being at (kamal) the lotus (charan) feet, i.e. obedience to Divine commands is (adhaaro = support) the mainstay of (jan = servant) the seeker. S/he does (vaapaaro) business of, i.e. conducts the self by, Naam/commands of (raam) the Almighty (aatth = eight, pahar = three hours) twenty-four hours of day and night.

S/he (gaavahi = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (govind = master of the world) the Almighty who (samaahiaa = contained) present (sarab) everywhere enjoying (sahj) steadfast (anand) happiness, says fifth Nanak. 4. 36. 43.

ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ ਸੋ ਰਿਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ॥ ਸਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਵਸਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੋ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

Mājẖ mėhlā 5. So sacẖ manḏar jiṯ sacẖ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai.   So riḏā suhelā jiṯ har guṇ gā▫ī▫ai.   Sā ḏẖaraṯ suhāvī jiṯ vasėh har jan sacẖe nām vitahu kurbāṇo jī▫o. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. (So) that is (mandar-u) temple of (sach-u) the Eternal (jit-u) where (sach-u) the Eternal (dhiaaeeai) is invoked. (So) that (ridaa) mind (jit-u) which (gaaeeai = sing) praises (gun) virtues of (hari) the Almighty is (suheyla) comfortable.

(Sa) that (dharat-i = land) place is (suhaavi) pleasant (jit-u) where (jan = servants) devotes of (har-i) God (vasah-i) abide, i.e. live by Naam/Divine virtues and commands; I (kurbaano = am sacrifice, vittah-u = to) adore the majesty of Naam. 1.

 

ਸਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਕਹਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥ ਧਿਆਇ ਧਿਆਇ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਜਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਣੋ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Sacẖ vadā▫ī kīm na pā▫ī.   Kuḏraṯ karam na kahṇā jā▫ī.   Ḏẖi▫ā▫e ḏẖi▫ā▫e jīvėh jan ṯere sacẖ sabaḏ man māṇo jī▫o. ||2||

 

(Keem = price) measure (vadaaee = greatness) virtues and powers of (sach-u) the Eternal cannot (paaee) be known; Divine (kudrat-i) powers and (karam-u) grace/beneficence (na jaaee) cannot be (kahna) stated.

O Almighty, (teyrey) Your (jan = servants) devotees (dhiaaey dhiaaey = pay attention – twice) keep in mind Your Naam/commands in thought and deed, and (jeevah-i) live without falling to vices; they (maano) enjoying living by (sach-u) Divine (sabad-u = word) commands (man-i) in mind. 2.

 

ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਣੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ॥ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੋ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Sacẖ sālāhaṇ vadbẖāgī pā▫ī▫ai.   Gur parsādī har guṇ gā▫ī▫ai.   Rang raṯe ṯerai ṯuḏẖ bẖāvėh sacẖ nām nīsāṇo jī▫o. ||3||

 

It is (vadbhaagee) by good fortune that one (paaeeai) gets to (saalaahan-u) praise (sach-u) the Eternal; (gaaeeai = singing) praising (har-i) Divine (gun) virtues and powers is done(parsaadee) with grace/guidance (of (gur) the guru.

Those (ratey) imbued with (teyrai) Your (rang-i) love/obedience, (bhaavah-i) are liked by (tudh-u) You; they are (neesaano = sign) are identified by living by (sach-u) Divine Naam/commands. 3.

 

ਸਚੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ ਥਾਨਿ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜਾਣੋ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੭॥੪੪॥

Sacẖe anṯ na jāṇai ko▫ī.   Thān thananṯar sacẖā so▫ī.   Nānak sacẖ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai saḏ hī anṯarjāmī jāṇo jī▫o. ||4||37||44||

 

(Na koee = not aany) no one (jaanai) knows (ant-u = end) the expanse of domain os (sachey) the Eternal; (soee) the same (sachaa) Eternal Master is present (thhaan-i = in places, thanantar-i = between places) everywhere. 

We should (sad hi) forever (dhiaaeeai) invoke/obey (sach-u) the Eternal; IT is (antarjaamee) knower of mind and (jaano) knows everything, says fifth Nanak. 4. 37. 44.

Mājẖ mėhlā 5. Raiṇ suhāvaṛī ḏinas suhelā.   Jap amriṯ nām sanṯsang melā.   Gẖaṛī mūraṯ simraṯ pal vañahi jīvaṇ safal ṯithā▫ī jī▫o. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. If one wants to have (suhaavrree) a comfortable (rain-i) night and (suheyla) pleasant (dinas-u) day; it happens (japi) with remembrance/obedience to (a’mmrit) the enlivening Naam/Divine commands; this is learnt (meyla = meeting) by joining (santsangi) holy congregation.  

Whatever (gharree, moorat, pal – measures of time) time short or long, that (vanjnahi = passes) is spent (simrat) remembering God, (tithaaee = there) that time of (Jeevan-u) life is (safal) fruitful. 1.

 

ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੋਖ ਸਭਿ ਲਾਥੇ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਥੇ ॥ ਭੈ ਭਉ ਭਰਮੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੇਖਾ ਸਭਨੀ ਜਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Simraṯ nām ḏokẖ sabẖ lāthe.   Anṯar bāhar har parabẖ sāthe.   Bẖai bẖa▫o bẖaram kẖo▫i▫ā gur pūrai ḏekẖā sabẖnī jā▫ī jī▫o. ||2||

 

(Sabh-i) all (dokh) faults/shortcomings (laathey = removed) are kept at bay by (simrat) keeping in mind and obeying Naam/Divine commands; (har-i) the Almighty (prabhu) Master is then perceived present (antar-i) within and (baahar-i) outside.

I (deykha) see the Almighty at (sabhnee) all (jaaee) places and (bhai) respectfully remain in IT’s obedience; with his guidance to obey Naam, (poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru has (khoiaa = lost) removed (bhau) fear of (bharam-u) straying from obedience of Naam. 2.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਵਡ ਊਚ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥ ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਮਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਲਵੈ ਨ ਲਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Parabẖ samrath vad ūcẖ apārā.   Na▫o niḏẖ nām bẖare bẖandārā.   Āḏ anṯ maḏẖ parabẖ so▫ī ḏūjā lavai na lā▫ī jī▫o. ||3||

 

(Prabhu) God is (samrath-u) Omnipotent, (vadd ooch) the highest (apaara = infinite) authority; IT’s (bhanddaara) stores are (bharey) full of (nau nidh-i = nine treasures) the wealth of (naam-u) Divine commands, i.e. God imparts awareness of Naam within.

(Soee = that one) the same (prabh-u) Almighty Master is present (aad-i) from beginning, (madh-i = middle) through life and (ant-i) at the end, i.e. the Creator is Eternal while the creatures are mortal; do not (laaee) place (dooja = second) anyone (lavai) near God. 3.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਜਾਚਿਕੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲਾ ॥ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਨੁ ਮਾਗੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੮॥੪੫॥

Kar kirpā mere ḏīn ḏa▫i▫ālā.   Jācẖik jācẖai sāḏẖ ravālā.   Ḏėh ḏān Nānak jan māgai saḏā saḏā har ḏẖi▫ā▫ī jī▫o. ||4||38||45||

 

O (daiaala) compassionate Master, please (kar-i) bestow (kirpa) kindness to (meyrey = my) me (deen = poor) the humble seeker. This (jaachik-u) beggar (jaachai) seeks (ravaala) dust of feet, i.e. to be in service and obedience of (saadh) the guru.

(Jan-u = servant) humble fifth Nanak (maagai) begs; please (deyhi) give (daan-u = alms) ability to (sadaa sadaa) forever (dhiaaee = pay attention) obey (har-i) Divine commands. 4. 38. 45.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. O Almighty, (too-nhai) You alone are the Master (aithai) here and (aagai = ahead) in the hereafter also (aapai) Yourself; (sabh-i) all (jeea jant) creatures are (thaapey = installed) assigned roles in life (teyrey = your) by You.

(Mai) I look for (tumaaree) Your (dhar) support and (ott) protection; there is (na koee = not any) none (avar-u) else (binu) except (tudh-u) You to look to.

 

ਰਸਨਾ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਜੂਐ ਹਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Rasnā jap jap jīvai su▫āmī.   Pārbarahm parabẖ anṯarjāmī.   Jin sevi▫ā ṯin hī sukẖ pā▫i▫ā so janam na jū▫ai hārī jī▫o. ||2||

 

One (jeevai) lives peacefully (jap-i jap-i) by remembering/obeying You (suaami) the Master; o (paarbrahm) Supreme (prabhu) Master and (antarjaamee) knower of minds.

(Tin hee) only that person (paaiaa) gets (sukh-u) peace (jin-i) who (seyviaa = serves) obeys Naam/Divine commands; (so = that) person does not (haaree = lose) waste (janamu) human birth in directionless pursuits like (jooai) in gambling. 2.

ਨਾਮੁ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਨ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਫਲ ਏਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Nām avkẖaḏẖ jin jan ṯerai pā▫i▫ā.   Janam janam kā rog gavā▫i▫ā.   Har kīrṯan gāvhu ḏin rāṯī safal ehā hai kārī jī▫o. ||3||

 

(Teyrai) Your (jan) seeker (jin-i) who (paaiaa) gets (avkhadh-u) the medicine of obedience of Naam from the guru; s/he (gavaaiaa = loses) is freed of (rog-u = disease) the wrongdoings accumulated in (janam janam) life after life, i.e. in previous births.

O dear, (gaavah-u = sing) praise/emulate (har-i) Divine (keertanu = praise) virtues (din-u) day and (raatee) night, i.e. all the time; (eyha) this (kaaree) practice is (saphal) fruitful in finding the Almighty. 3.

 

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਪਨਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਇਕਸੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੯॥੪੬॥

Ḏarisat ḏẖār apnā ḏās savāri▫ā.   Gẖat gẖat anṯar pārbarahm namaskāri▫ā.   Ikas viṇ hor ḏūjā nāhī bābā Nānak ih maṯ sārī jī▫o. ||4||39||46||

 

The Almighty (dhaar-i) bestows (dristt-i = sight) grace and (savaariaa) transforms (apna = own) IT’s (daas-u = servant) devotee who sees the Almighty present (antar-i) in (ghatt ghatt) everyone and (namaskaariaa = pays obeisance) shows respect.

There is none (dooja = second) other (vin-u) except (ikas-u) the One Almighty anywhere; this is (saaree) the sublime (mat-i) understanding, o (baaba) dear, says the fifth Guru. 4. 39. 46.

(Bhagat) the devotees (jeevah-i = live) are enlivened – to resist temptations – (gaaey = singing) by praising (gun) virtues of (apaaraa) the Infinite Almighty.

Awareness of (naama) Naam/virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (nidhaana) treasure of, gun/virtues is (a’mmrit-u) life giving; one who (dhiaaey dhiaaey) keeps paying attention to Naam, (paaiaa) experiences (sukh-u) peace – by finding the Almighty within. 1.

 

ਮਨਸਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਜੋ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਆਵੈ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥ ਆਸ ਮਨੋਰਥੁ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਭੇਟਤ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Mansā ḏẖār jo gẖar ṯe āvai   Sāḏẖsang janam maraṇ mitāvai   Ās manorath pūran hovai bẖetaṯ gurḏarsā▫i▫ā jī▫o ||2||

 

One (Jo) who (aavai) comes (tey) from (ghar) home yearning for God, joins (saadhsang-i) holy congregation where virtues and commands of the Almighty are learnt. S/he gives up vices, finds God and (mittaavai = erases) obviates being in cycles of (janam-u) birth and (maran-u) death.

His/her (aas) wishes and (manorath-u) objective of finding the Almighty (hovai) is (pooran-u) fulfilled, by (bheyttat) meeting and (darsaaiaa = shown) example of (guru) the guru. 2.

Agam agocẖar kicẖẖ miṯ nahī jānī   Sāḏẖik siḏẖ ḏẖi▫āvahi gi▫ānī   Kẖuḏī mitī cẖūkā bẖolāvā gur man hī mėh paragtā▫i▫ā jī▫o ||3||

 

The Almighty is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (agochar) not perceived by the senses; IT’s (mit-i) measure cannot (jaanee) known; (saadhik) the seekers, (sidh) accomplished saints and (giaanee) scholars of scriptures, (dhiaavaij) invoke the Almighty.

When (khudee = ego) acting by self-will (mittee = erased) is given up, then (bholaava) straying from obeying Naam (chooka) ends; this is how (gur-i) the guru (pragttaaiaa = makes manifest) shows the Almighty (mah-i) in (man) the mind (hi) itself. 3.

 

ਅਨਦ ਮੰਗਲ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਨਾ ॥ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੨੫॥੩੨॥

Anaḏ mangal kali▫āṇ niḏẖānā   Sūkẖ sahj har nām vakẖānā   Ho▫e kirpāl su▫āmī apnā nā▫o Nānak gẖar mėh ā▫i▫ā jī▫o ||4||25||32||

 

With (nidhaana) the treasure of awareness of Naam (andar-i) within, one experiences (anad) bliss, (mangal) joy and (kaliaan) happiness. S/he attains (sookh) peace and (sahj) poise by (vakhaana = saying) praising and obeying Naam/commands of (har-i) the Almighty.

However, awareness of (naau) Naam (aaiaa) comes (mah-i) in (ghar = house) the mind when (suaami) the Master (apna = own) of all (hoey) is (kripaal-u) kind to lead to the guru, says fifth Nanak. 4. 25. 32.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਤ ਮਲੁ ਸਗਲੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ ਭੇਟਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੈ ਸਦਾ ਜਪਉ ਦਇਆਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Guṇ gāvaṯ man hari▫ā hovai   Kathā suṇaṯ mal saglī kẖovai   Bẖetaṯ sang sāḏẖ sanṯan kai saḏā japa▫oḏa▫i▫ālā jī▫o ||2||

 

(Man-u) the mind (hovai) is (hariaa = green) rejuvenated – enabled to resist temptations – (gaavat = singing) by praising and emulating (gun) Divine virtues. (Saglee) all (mal-u = dirt) vices (khovai = lost) are given up (sunat) by listening to, and obeying, (kathaa = discourse) Divine commands.

O (dailaa) the kind Almighty, please enable that I (bheyttat) meet with, and (sang-i) in company/with guidance of, (santan = saints) followers of (saadh) the guru, (sadaa) ever (japau) remember and obey You. 2.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਮਾਰਉ ॥ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮਨਿ ਧਾਰਉ ॥ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਾ ਸਰਬ ਮਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Parabẖ apunā sās sās samāra▫o   Ih maṯ gur parsāḏ man ḏẖāra▫o   Ŧumrī kirpā ṯe ho▫e pargāsā sarab ma▫i▫ā parṯipālā jī▫o ||3||

 

May I (samaarau) keep in mind – Naam/commands of – (prabh-u) the Master (apunaa = own) of all (saas-i saas-i) with every breath, i.e. all the time. And (dhaarau) keep (ih) this (mat-i) counsel (man-i) in mind (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of (guru) the guru – pleas lead me to the guru.

(Pragaasaa) enlightenment of the mind (hoey) happens (tey) with (tumree) your (kripa) grace – by leading to the guru; please bestow (maiaa) kindness on (sarab) all, o (pratipaala) Sustainor Almighty. 3.

 

ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦ ਆਪੇ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਚਲਿਤ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥ ੨੬॥੩੩॥

Saṯ saṯ saṯ parabẖ so▫ī   Saḏā saḏā saḏ āpe ho▫ī   Cẖaliṯ ṯumāre pargat pi▫āre ḏekẖ Nānak bẖa▫e nihālā jī▫o ||4||26||33||

 

(Soee = that one) the One (prabh-u) Almighty is (sat-i sat-i sat-i = true – thrice) helps from birth, through life till the end. IT (aapey = self) alone (hoee) is (sadaa sadaa sadaa) forever present to help and watch.

O (piaarey) Beloved Master, (tumaarey) Your (chalat) plays are (pargatt) manifest; I (bhaey) am (nihaala) happy to (deykh-i) see them, says Fifth Nanak – the seeker. 4. 26. 33.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. (Meyha) rain – of Divine grace – (laagey) starts (varsan) falling (hukmee = with orders) with grace of the Almighty; when one (mil-i) joins (saajan = friends, sant = saints) the holy congregation and (japeyha) recount Naam/Divine commands and learn to obey.

Everyone (paiaa) experiences (seetal) cool (saant-i) peace and (sahj) poise; (prabh-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (paaee) causes (tthaaddh-i) coolness/a tranquil state. 1.

 

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਹੁਤੋ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਗਲ ਰਜਾਇਆ ॥ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੇ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Sabẖ kicẖẖ bahuṯo bahuṯ upā▫i▫ā   Kar kirpā parabẖ sagal rajā▫i▫ā   Ḏāṯkarahu mere ḏāṯārā jī▫a janṯ sabẖ ḏẖarāpe jī▫o ||2||

 

Like the rain helps produce (sabh-u kichh-u = everything) the crop (bahuto bahut-u) in plenty; (prabh-i) the Almighty (kar-i kirpa) bestows Divine grace and (rajaaiaa) satiates with awareness  of Naam.

O Almighty (dataaraa = giver) provider (meyrey = my) of all, please (karaah-u = make, daat-i = charity) impart awareness of Naam, so that (sabh-i) all (jeea jant) creatures (dhraapey) are contented. 2.

 

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੀ ਨਾਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭੈ ਕਾਟੇ ਮੋਹਾ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Sacẖā sāhib sacẖī nā▫ī   Gur parsāḏ ṯis saḏā ḏẖi▫ā▫ī   Janam maraṇ bẖai kāte mohā binse sog sanṯāpe jī▫o ||3||

 

(Saacha) the Eternal (sahib-u) Master has (sachee = true) inevitable (naaee) writ/authority. I (sadaa) ever (dhiaaee = pay attention) obey (tis-u = that) the Almighty (parsaad-i) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru.

With this, (mohaa) enticement by temptations in (bhai/bhav) the world, and (janam) births and (maran) deaths (kaattey = cut) are obviated; (sog) sorrow and (santaapey) suffering (binsey = destroyed) end. 3.

 

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਭਿ ਫਾਹੇ ॥ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸ ਕਰੀ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਜਾਪੇ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੨੭॥੩੪॥

Sās sās Nānak sālāhe   Simraṯ nām kāte sabẖ fāhe   Pūran ās karī kẖin bẖīṯar har har har guṇ jāpe jī▫o ||4||27||34||

 

The seeker Fifth Nanak (saalaahey) praises the Almighty (saas-i saas-i) with every breath; (sabh-i) all (phaahey = noose) bondages to vices are (kaattey) cut (simrat) by remembering Naam/Divine commands.

One who (jaapey) keeps in mind (gun) virtues and commands (har- har-i har-i = of God – thrice) of God in word, thought and speech; the Almighty (karee = makes, pooran = fulfilled) fulfils his/her (aas) wish of union with the Almighty (bheetar-i) in (khin) a moment, i.e. effortlessly. 4. 27. 34.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. (Aau) come my (sajan meet) friends (sant) the seekers of God; let us (mil-i) together (gaavah-i = sing) praise (gun) virtues of (apaarey) the Infinite Master who is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension.

Those who (gaavat = sing) expound and (sunat) listen to Naam, they (sabhey hi) all (muktey) attain freedom from temptations; let us (dhiaaeeai = pay attention) obey (so) the Creator (jin-i) who (keeay) created (ham) us. 1.

 

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦੇ ਸੇਈ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸਭਸੁ ਕਉ ਦੀਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Janam janam ke kilbikẖ jāvėh   Man cẖinḏe se▫ī fal pāvahi   Simar sāhib so sacẖ su▫āmī rijak sabẖas ka▫o ḏī▫e jī▫o ||2||

 

If you wish that influences of (kilbikh) transgressions (key) of (janam janam) past breaths (jaavah-i) leave the mind; and (phal = fruits) fulfilment of aspirations (chidey) wished (man-i) by the mind – to find the Almighty – (paavah-i) is obtained.

Then (simar-i) remember/obey (so = that) the One (sach-u) Eternal (sahib-u suaami) Master, who (deeay) provides (rijak-u) wherewithal (kau) to all –Your wish for union will be granted. 2.

 

Note: The next verse uses the term ਪਾਰਗਿਰਾਮੀ (Paargiraamee) meaning one who lives across the world ocean of vices; that is where God is. This refers to the soul that overcomes vices to be acceptable to God for merger

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਸਭੁ ਭਉ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸੋ ਪਾਰਗਿਰਾਮੀ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਗਲੇ ਥੀਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Nām japaṯ sarab sukẖ pā▫ī▫ai   Sabẖ bẖa▫o binsai har har ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai   Jin sevi▫ā so pārgiramī kāraj sagle thī▫e jī▫o ||3||

 

(Sarab) every (sukh-u) comfort (paaeeai) is attained, i.e. objective of union with the Almighty is attained, (japat) with remembrance/obedience (naam-i) of Naam/Divine commands. (Sabh-u) every (bhau) fear/apprehension (binsai = destroyed) is obviated (dhiaaeeai) by paying attention to/obeying (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam.

One (jin-i) who (seyviaa = serves) obeys Naam, (so) that person (paar-giraamee) lives in the village on the far shore, i.e. overcomes vices; (sagely) all his/her (kaaraj) purposes are (theeay) done, i.e. us/he finds the Almighty. 3.

 

ਆਇ ਪਇਆ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਲੈਹਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੨੮॥੩੫॥

Ā▫e pa▫i▫ā ṯerī sarṇā▫ī   Ji▫o bẖāvai ṯi▫o laihi milā▫ī   Kar kirpā parabẖ bẖagṯī lāvhu sacẖ Nānak amriṯpī▫e jī▫o ||4||28||35||

 

O Almighty, I (aaey = come, paiaa = put) have placed myself in (teyree) Your (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience; please (laih-i milaaee) unite me with You (tiau) that way (jiau) as (bhaavai) pleases You.

Please (kar-i kirpa) be kind and (laavah-u) engage me in Your (bhagtee = devotion) obedience, so that the seeker fifth Nanak (peeay) drinks (amrit-u) life-giving elixir of (sach-u) truth, i.e. leads life by Naam/Divine commands free of vices. 4. 28. 35.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. (Govind gusaaee = master of the world) the Almighty (bhaey) is (kripaal) kind. (Meygh-u) clouds are (varsai) dropping rain at (sabhni) all (thaaee) places, i.e. the Almighty can be experienced everywhere.

(Daiaal) the compassionate (kartaarey) Creator is (sadaa) ever (kirpaala) kind to (deen = poor) the needy; and (paaee) provides (tthaaddh-i = cool-ness) solace to all. 1.

 

ਅਪੁਨੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਮਾਤਾ ਸੰਮਾਰੇ ॥ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇਤ ਸਗਲ ਆਹਾਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Apune jī▫a janṯ parṯipāre   Ji▫o bārik māṯā sammāre Ḏukẖ bẖanjan sukẖ sāgar su▫āmī ḏeṯ sagal āhāre jī▫o ||2||

 

The Creator (pratipaarey = nurtures) looks after (apuney = own) IT’s (jeea jant = creatures) creation, (jiau) like (maata) the mother (sa’mmaarey) takes care of her (baarik) children.

(Suaami) the Master (bhanjan = destroys) ends (dukh) distress; God i(saagar = ocean) the source of (sukh) comforts, (deyt) provides (aahaarey = food) sustenance to (sagal) all. 2.

 

ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਾ ॥ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਕੁਰਬਾਨਾ ॥ ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈ ਜਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Jal thal pūr rahi▫ā miharvānā   Saḏ balihār jā▫ī▫ai kurbānā   Raiṇ ḏinas ṯis saḏā ḏẖi▫ā▫ī jė kẖin mėh sagal uḏẖāre jī▫o ||3||

 

(Miharvaana) the benevolent Almighty (poor-i rahiaa) pervades (jal-i) in water and (thal-i) on/in (thal) land. We should (sad) ever (balihaar-i = sacrifice, jaaeeai = be) be respectful and (kurbaana = sacrifice) obey the Almighty.

Be it (Rain-i) night or (dinas-u) day, we should (dhiaaee) invoke (tis-u = that) the Master (j-i) who can (udhaarey) lift/save from (sagal) all from vices (mah-i) in (khin) a moment, i.e. with one command. 3.

 

ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਸਗਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪੇ ॥ ਉਤਰਿ ਗਏ ਸਭ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੨੯॥੩੬॥

Rākẖ lī▫e sagle parabẖ āpe   Uṯar ga▫e sabẖ sog sanṯāpe   Nām japaṯ man ṯan harī▫āval parabẖNānak naḏar nihāre jī▫o ||4||29||36||

 

When (prabh-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (raakh-i leeay) protects; (sabh) all (sog) sorrow and (santaapey) suffering (uatar-i gaey) are removed.

(Man-u) the mind and (tan-u) body (hareeaaval-u = greenery) are rejuvenated – to overcome vices, (japat) by remembrance/obedience to Naam/Divine commands when (prabh) the Almighty (nihaarey = casts sight) bestows (nadar-i) grace, says fifth Nanak. 4. 29. 36.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh.

Literal meaning: Where (naam-u) Naam/commands of (piaarey) the Beloved (prabh) Almighty (japeeai) remembered and obeyed. Even if such places are (asthal) desolate, their value is like (soin) golden (chaubaarey) mansions

Conversely (jithai) where Naam of (goida/gobinda = master of the world) the Creator is not remembered/obeyed, (seyee) such a (nagar = town) a populated place is considered (ujaarree) deserted. 1.

 

Message: A lowly person who lives by Naam does not fall prey to vices and is at peace, but an opulent person bereft of awareness of Naam succumbs to vices and remains restless. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਰੁਖੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਇ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ॥ ਖਾਇ ਖਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਜਾਣੁ ਵਿਸੂ ਕੀ ਵਾੜੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Har rukẖī rotī kẖā▫e samāle   Har anṯar bāhar naḏar nihāle   Kẖā▫e kẖā▫e kare baḏfailī jāṇ visū kī vāṛī jī▫o ||2||

 

One who (khaaey) eats (rukhee) bare (rottee) bread but (samaaley) remains conscious of Divine virtues and commands; (har-i) the Almighty (nihaaley = sees, nadar-i = with sight) bestows grace, is at peace (antar-i) within and (baahar-i) outside.

On the other hand one who (khaaey khaaey = eats and eats) has plenty to eat but (karey) commits (badfailee) base deeds, (jaan-u) consider him to be (vaarree = hedge/fence) surrounded by (visoo) poison, i.e. remains restless. 2.

 

ਸੰਤਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਵਿਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਖੋਈ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜੜ ਅਪੁਣੀ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾੜੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Sanṯā seṯī rang na lā▫e   Sākaṯ sang vikram kamā▫e   Ḏulabẖ ḏeh kẖo▫ī agi▫ānī jaṛ apuṇī āp upāṛī jī▫o ||3||

 

One who does not (laaey) bear (rang-u) love (seytee) for, does not like to join (santa = saints) the holy congregation; (kamaaey) indulges in (vikaram) evil deeds (sang-i) in company of (saakat) those who ignore God.

(Agiaanee = ignorant) a person oblivious of God/Divine commands (khoee) loses the opportunity to remember/obey God in (dulabh) the hard-to-get human (deyh = body) birth; s/he (upaarree) cuts (apunee = own) his/her (jar) roots (aap-i) him/herself, i.e. destroys chances of union with God. 3.

 

ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਰਮ ਅਸਾੜੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੦॥੩੭॥

Ŧerī saraṇ mere ḏīn ḏa▫i▫ālā   Sukẖ sāgar mere gur gopālā   Kar kirpā Nānak guṇ gāvai rākẖo saram asāṛī jī▫o ||4||30||37||

 

O Almighty, You are (daiaala) kind to (deen) the needy; I place myself in (teyree) Your (saran-i = sanctuary) care and obedience; o (saagar = ocean) source of (sukh) comforts, (gur) great (gopaala) Sustainor (meyrey = my) of all.

(Kar-i kirpa) kindly enable that the seeker fifth Nanak (gaavai) sings Your (gun) virtues and obeys You; please (raakhau) preserve (asaarree) my (saram) honour, i.e. save me from vices. 4. 30. 37.

Mājẖ mėhlā 5 Cẖaraṇ ṯẖākur ke riḏai samāṇe   Kal kales sabẖ ḏūr pa▫i▫āṇeSāʼnṯ sūkẖ sahj ḏẖun upjī sāḏẖū sang nivāsā jī▫o ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. When (charan) feet (key) of (tthaakur) the Master are (samaaney) contained, i.e. when one keeps commands of the Almighty, (ridai) in mind; then (sabh) all (kal-i) conflicts and (kaleys) strife (paiaaney) go (door-i) away, i.e. one is rid of other thoughts and resultant restlessness.

Then (saa’nt-i) peace, (sookh) comfort, (sahj = steady, dhun-i = music) steadfast experience of God (upjee) is attained (sang-i) with (nivaasa = stay) company/guidance of (saadhoo) the guru. 1.

 

ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਤੂਟੈ ਮੂਲੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Lāgī parīṯ na ṯūtai mūle   Har anṯar bāhar rahi▫ā bẖarpūre   Simar simar simar guṇ gāvā kātī jam kī fāsā jī▫o ||2||

 

Once (preet-i) love for the Almighty (laagee) develops it (na mooley) never (toottai) breaks; (har-i) the Almighty (rahiaa bharpoorey) is present (antar-i) within and (baahar-i) outside i.e. once that awareness comes, it is not lost.

(Simar-i Simar-i simar-i = remember – thrice) I keep conscious of (gun) virtues and commands of the Almighty in thought, word and deed, with which (phaasaa) noose of (jam) Divine justice is (kaatti) cut, i.e. one does not fall prey to vices and suffer. 2.

 

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਵਰਖੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਅਘਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਜਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Amriṯ varkẖai anhaḏ baṇī   Man ṯan anṯar sāʼnṯ samāṇī   Ŧaripaṯ agẖā▫e rahe jan ṯere saṯgur kī▫āḏilāsā jī▫o ||3||

 

Then (anhad) continuous stream of (amrit-u) life-giving (baani) words (varsai) rains, i.e. God provides awareness of Nam/Divine commands within; then (saa’nt-i) peace (samaanee) is experienced (antar-i) in (man) mind and (tan) body, i.e. the whole being.

(Teyrey) Your (jan) servants/devotees (rahey) remain (tripat-i aghaaey = satiated) at peace when (keeaa dilaasa) comforted with guidance (satigur-i) by the true guru. 3.

 

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਾ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੧॥੩੮॥

Jis kā sā ṯis ṯe fal pā▫i▫ā   Kar kirpā parabẖ sang milā▫i▫ā   Āvaṇ jāṇ rahe vadbẖāgī Nānak pūran āsā jī▫o ||4||31||38||

 

The Master (jis ka) whose dependent one is, (paiaa) obtains (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of wishes from (tis-u = that) the Almighty; by being led to the guru who (kar-i kirpa) kindly (milaaiaa) unites/connects (sang-i) with (prabh) the Almighty.

 (Aasa) wishes of union with the Creator of such (vaddbhaagee) a fortunate devotee (pooran) are fulfilled, and further (aavan = coming) births and (jaan = going) deaths (rahey) are obviated, says fifth Nanak. 4. 31. 38.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maajh. (Meeh-u) rain (paiaa) falls when (paaiaa) dropped (prmeysar-i) by the Supreme Master; there are good crops and (sabh-i) all (jeea jant) creatures (vasaaiaa) live (sukhee) in comfort, i.e. peace is obtained with Divine grace.

(Kaleys-u) strife (gaiaa = goes) ends and (saacha) true (sukh-u) peace (bhaiaa) is attained when (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) Naam/commands of the Almighty (samaalee) are kept in mind. 1.

 

Note: The next verse ends with ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਘਾਲੀ (Pooran hoee ghaali) meaning the toil is fruitful. Human birth is an opportunity to live by Hukam or Divine commands/laws of nature and qualify for merger with God. Achieving this merger is life’s toil being fruitful. One achieves this by overcoming vices that are prevalent all round. Manifestation of this is being at peace with the self.

 

ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਸੇ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੇ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਏ ਰਖਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਸੁਣੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਘਾਲੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

Jis ke se ṯin hī parṯipāre   Pārbarahm parabẖ bẖa▫e rakẖvāre   Suṇī benanṯī ṯẖākur merai pūran ho▫ī gẖālī jī▫o ||2||

 

The Creator (jis key = whose) to whom we belong (hi) only (tin) that Master (pratipaarey) looks after us; (paarbrahm) the Supreme Master (bhaey) is (rakhvaarey) protector, i.e. we should invoke only the One Almighty.

(Tthaakur) the Master (meyrai = my) of all (sunee) hears (beynantee) supplication and (ghaalee) effort – obedience to the Almighty (hoee) is (pooran = fulfilled) fruitful, i.e. all wishes are fulfilled. 2.

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਕਉ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਮਹੀਅਲ ਸਭਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਣੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਲੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Sarab jī▫ā ka▫o ḏevaṇhārā   Gur parsādī naḏar nihārā   Jal thal mahī▫al sabẖ ṯaripṯāṇe sāḏẖū cẖaran pakẖālī jī▫o ||3||

 

The Creator (deyvanhaara = giver) takes care (kau) of (sarab) all (jeeaa) creatures; IT (nihaara) casts/bestows (nadar-i = sight of grace) grace with obedience to Divine commands, (parsaadee) with guidance of the guru.

(Sabh-i) all creatures in (jal) water, in/on (thal) land and (maheeal) space are (triptaaney = satiated) fulfil their wishes when they (pakhaalee) wash (charan) feet of, i.e. serve and obey (saadhoo) the guru.

 

ਮਨ ਕੀ ਇਛ ਪੁਜਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਾਈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਨੁ ਕੀਆ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਸਾਲੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩੨॥੩੯॥

Man kī icẖẖ pujāvaṇhārā   Saḏā saḏā jā▫ī balihārā   Nānak ḏān kī▫ā ḏukẖ bẖanjan raṯe rang rasālī jī▫o ||4||32||39||

 

The Almighty (pujaavanhaara) fulfils (ichh) wishes (ki) of (man) the mind; I (sadaa sadaa) forever (jaaee balihaara = am sacrifice) adore the Master.

The Almighty (bhanjan-i) ends (dukh) grief, (keea = gives, daan-u = charity) bestows grace and one (ratey) is imbued (rang-i) with Divine love, (rasaalee) the source of joy, says fifth Nanak. 4. 32. 39.
