Composition of the fourth Guru in (raag-u) Raga Kaanrra, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the firsr beat.

Invoking the ONE Almighty, (sat-i) with eternal (naam-u) commands/writ; (karta purakh-u) Creator of all universe. (Nirbhau = beyond fear, is not answerable to anyone) being the highest authority, does not fear or favour any one/thing, (nirvair-u = without enmity) is not against any one, (moorat-i = picture) is the embodiment of (akaal) timeless-ness and deathless-ness, (ajooni) does not take physical life form, (saibha’n) is self-existent; is known (gur prasaad-i) with the guru’s grace/guidance.

mērā manu sādh janāṃ mili hariā. hau bali bali bali bali sādh janāṃ kau mili saṅgati pāri utariā.1. rahāu.

(Meyra)  my (man-u) mind (hariaa = green) blossoms on (mil-i) meeting (saadh = saint, janaa = people) the devotees of God – because vices are dispelled and peace experienced within, in their company.

(Hau) I (bal-i = am sacrifice, kau = to) adore (saadh janaa kau) the devotees (mil-i) by joining whose (sangat-i) holy company, and (bal-i bal-i bal-i = sacrifice – thrice) humbly following their example in thought, word and deed, one (utariaa = lands, paar-i = far shore) gets across the world-ocean, i.e. overcomes temptations of the world – and is not reborn. 1

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

O (har-i har-i) Almighty (prabh) Master, please (karahu) bestow (apni = own) Your (kripa) kindness to enable that (ham) I (pariaa) place myself at (pag) feet, i.e. under guidance, of (saadh janaa) devotees/guru.

(Dhan-u dhan-u) highly blessed are (saadh jan) the devotees, who (jaaniaa = known) have recognize (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master within and without; (patit) one fallen to vices (udhariaa) is freed of them (mil-i = meeting) in company, i.e following example, of (saadhoo) the guru. 1.

(Manooaa) the mind (chalai chalai) keeps wandering (bahu bahu) in numerous (bidh-i) ways caused by temptations and can be (kariaa = made) brought (vasgat-i) under control (mil-i) in company (saadhoo) the guru.

The mind is enticed away from God by temptations like (badhak-i = hunter) the fish catcher (pasaario = spreads) throws (tant-u) the line with bait on hook; and (meena) the fish (gras-i) swallows, is brought (vasgat-i) under control/is caught and (khariaa) taken away from water it loves. 2.

(Sant) devotees (key) of (har-i) the Almighty, (sant) who ever keep God in mind, are (bhal = good) very (neekey) good persons; (mal-u) dirt of vices (laheeaa) is removed (mil-i = meeting) in company of (sant janaa) the devotees.

(Durat-u) the evil of (haumai) ego is (sabh-u) totally (neekar-i gaiaa) removed, – by following the devotees – (jiau) like (saabun-i) soap (kariaa) makes (kaapar-u) clothes clean. 3.

One in whose (mastak-i, lilaatt-i = forehead) destiny (tthaakur-i) the Master (likhiaa) has so written (dhur-i) at the source, s/he (dhariaa) keeps (charan) feet of (gur) the great (satigur) true guru in (ur-i) mind, i.e. keeps in mind and obeys commands of the Almighty.

S/he (paaiaa) finds (prabh-u) the Almighty who (bhanj = breaker) destroys (sabh-u) all (daalad-u) misery and (dookh) suffering; living (naam-i) by Naam/virtues and commands of the Almighty, s/he (udhriaa = rises above) gets across the world-ocean, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1.

Composition of the fourth Guru in the Raga Kaanrraa. (Meyra)  my (man-u) mind has now become (reyn) the dust of (pag) feet, i.e. respects and follows the example, of (saadh = saint, janaa = people) devotees of the Almighty.

I (sunee) heard (kathaa) discourse on virtues of (har-i har-i) the Almighty (mil-i) by joining (sangat-i) company of the devotees, and my (koraa) impervious mind – not receptive to instructions – is now (bheyn/bhinaa = rinsed) imbued (rang-i) with love of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

(Ham) I was (achit) mindless and (acheyt) ignorant not (jaanah-i) knowing (gat-i = state, mit-i = measure) worth of Naam of the Almighty; (gur-i) the guru (keeay) made me (suchit) mindful and (chiteyn) aware.

(Prabh-i) the Almighty who is (daiaal-i) compassionate to (deen) the hapless (keeo = made, angeekrit-u = accepted) patronized me; now I (japeyn) remember and practice (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (man-i) in mind.

I (miliaa = found) experienced (har-i) the Almighty on (miley) meeting (sant) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty; (ham) I had (patit) fallen to vices, they (keeay) made me (paveyn) purified, i.e. dispelled vices within – and I recognized God within. 2.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Kaanrraa. O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember Naam/virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty for (pargaas) enlightenment on the purpose of life.

suāmī abhai nirañjan narahari tumhh rākhi lēhu ham pāpī pāth. kām krōdh bikhiā lōbhi lubhatē kāsaṭ lōh tarē saṅgi sāth.1.

(Abhai = fearless – answerable to none) O Supreme (narhar-i = man-lion – metaphor for) Almighty (suaami) Master, (raakh-i leyhu) save (ham) us (paapi) transgressors from (path) that path.

We are (lobh-i lubhtey) attracted by/engrossed in (bikhiaa) vices of (kaam) lust and (krodh) anger etc.; please lead us to the guru so that we are saved in his company like (loh) iron (tarey = floats) is ferried (sang saath) with (kaasatt) wood. 1.

tumhh vaḍ purakh baḍ agam agōchar ham ḍhūḍhi rahē pāī nahī hāth. tū parai parai aparamparu suāmī tū āpan jānahi āpi jagannāth. 2.

(Tumh) You are (badd) the great (purakh) Being, so (badd) great as to be (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and are (agochar) not perceived by the senses; we (ddhooddh-i rahey) search but cannot (paaee) find Your (haath) bottom/depth/measure, o Almighty.

(Too) You are (parai parai) far and still farther, (aprampaar-u) Infinite, o (suaami) Master, (too) You (aap-i = self) alone (jaanah-i) know (aapan) Yourself, o (jagannaath) Master of the world. 2.

The Almighty is (adristt-u = unseen) Formless and (agochar) not perceived by the senses; join (satsangat-i) the holy congregation and (dhiaaey) pay attention to Naam/virtues and commands of the Almighty as recounted there.

One who (sunee) listens to (kathaa) discourse on virtues and commands (har-i har-i) of the Almighty, (japio) remembers and lives by (kath kaath = the discourse) Naam/virtues and commands of the otherwise (akath) indescribable (har-i har-i) Almighty. 3.

O (hamrey) our (prabh) Almighty Master, You are (jagdees, gusaaee, jagannaath) Master of the world, i.e. our Creator, please (raakh leyhu) protect us from vices.

Please (karahu) make me (daas-u) the servant of (daas) servants (ko) of Your (daasan) servants/devotees; please (karahu) bestow (kripa) kindness and (raakhahu) keep us (saath) in company of (jan) the devotees, supplicates (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 4. 6.
