SGGS pp 1339-1341, Prabhaati M: 5, Shabads 8-15.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਲਾ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਦ ਅਟਲਾ ॥

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5.   Gur pūrā pūrī ṯā kī kalā.   Gur kā sabaḏ saḏā saḏ atlā.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in raga Prabhaati. (Gur-u) the guru is (poora) perfect and (ki = of, ta = that) his (kalaa = skill) ability to guide is (poori) perfect. (Sabad-u = word) teachings (ka) of the guru are (sadaa sad) forever (attalaa = inevitable) unfailing.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥ ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਨਸੈ ॥੧॥

Gur kī baṇī jis man vasai.   Ḏūkẖ ḏaraḏ sabẖ ṯā kā nasai. ||1||

 

One in (jis-u) whose (man-i) mind (baani = words) teachings of the guru (vasai = abides) are remembered/obeyed; (sabh-u) all (ta ka) his/her (dookh-u) faults/transgressions and resultant (darad) pain (nasai = runs away) is obviated. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ ਮੁਕਤ ਸਾਧੂ ਧੂਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har rang rāṯā man rām gun gāvai.   Mukṯo sāḏẖū ḏẖūrī nāvai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Raataa) imbued (rang-i) with love of (har-i) the Almighty, s/he (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty. S/he (naavai/nhaavai) bathes in (dhoori/dhoori) dust of the feet, i.e. follows the teachings/example, of (sadhoo) the guru and becomes (mukto) free of vices. 1.

 (Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਤਰੇ ਪਾਰਿ ॥ ਭਉ ਭਰਮੁ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੇ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨਾ ॥ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਸਾਧ ਪਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਾ ॥੨॥

Gur parsādī uṯre pār.   Bẖa▫o bẖaram binse bikār.  Man ṯan anṯar base gur cẖarnā.   Nirbẖai sāḏẖ pare har sarnā. ||2||

 

S/he (utrey) lands (paar-i) on the far shore – of the world-ocean -, i.e. overcomes temptations in the world, (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of the guru. His/her (bikaar) vices, (bhau = fears) apprehensions and (bharam) delusion (binsey = destroyed) leave.

(Charna) feet of the guru (basey) abide, i.e. s/he is conscious of teachings, of (gur) the guru (antar-i) in his/her (man) mind/thoughts and (tan = body) actions. Such (saadh) saints (parey) place themselves (sarna = in sanctuary) in care and obedience of (har-i) the Almighty and become (nirbhai) fearless – they have no apprehensions, for they do not transgress. 2.

 

ਅਨਦ ਸਹਜ ਰਸ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥ ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨੇਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੩॥

Anaḏ sahj ras sūkẖ gẖanere.   Ḏusman ḏūkẖ na āvai nere.  Gur pūrai apune kar rākẖe.   Har nām japaṯ kilbikẖ sabẖ lāthe. ||3||

 

S/he experiences (ghaneyrey) abundant (anad/anand) bliss, (sahj) poise, (ras) joy and (sookh) comfort/peace. No (dusman-u = enemy) evil or (dookh-u) fault/wrong-doing does not (aavai) come (neyrai) near, i.e. s/he keeps vices at bay. 

(Poorai) the perfect guru (raakhai) keeps/protects him/her (kar-i = making) as his (apuney) own, i.e. protects him/her from vices through living by Naam. (Sabh-i) all his/her (kilbikh) transgressions (laatthey) are removed (japat) with remembrance/obedience of (naam-u) Naam. 3.

 

ਸੰਤ ਸਾਜਨ ਸਿਖ ਭਏ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਉ ਲੈ ਮੇਲੇ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਫਾਹਾ ਕਾਟਿਆ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੜਦਾ ਢਾਕਿਆ ॥੪॥੮॥

Sanṯ sājan sikẖ bẖa▫e suhele.   Gur pūrai parabẖ si▫o lai mele.  Janam maran ḏukẖ fāhā kāti▫ā.   Kaho Nānak gur paṛ▫ḏā dẖāki▫ā. ||4||8||

 

(Saajan = friends) followers of (sant) the guru (bhaey) are (suheley) comfortable/at peace, as (poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru (lai) takes and (meyely) unites (sio) with (prabh) the Almighty.

The guru (kaattiaa = cuts) obviates (phaahaa) the noose of (dukh) pain of (janam) births and (maran) deaths; (kahu) say o fifth Nanak – the seekers -, (gur-i) the guru (ddhaakiaa = covers) draws (parrda) the curtain, i.e. protects them from vices. 4. 8.

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਆ ॥ ਅਨਦ ਮੰਗਲ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਗਲਾ ਰਾਸਿ ਥੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5.   Saṯgur pūrai nām ḏī▫ā.   Anaḏ mangal kali▫āṇ saḏā sukẖ kāraj saglā rās thī▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in raga Prabhaati. One whom the Almighty (poorai) perfect (satigur-i) true guru (deeaa) gives awareness of (naam-u) Divine commands – and s/he complies. S/he (sadaa) ever experiences (anad/anand) bliss, (mangal) joy, (kaliaan) freedom from vices, (sukh-u) peace; (sagla) every (kaaraj-u) aspirations of his/her (theeaa) is (raas-i) accomplished – s/he is at peace in life and unites with the Almighty on death. 1.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠੇ ॥ ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਝੂਠੇ ॥੧॥

Cẖaran kamal gur ke man vūṯẖe.   Ḏūkẖ ḏaraḏ bẖaram binse jẖūṯẖe. ||1||

 

When (kamal) lotus (charan) feet (key) of the guru (vootthey) abide (man-i) in mind, i.e. one who submits to the guru’s teachings; s/he is (binsey = destroyed) rid (jhootthey = false) the bothersome (dookh) faults, resultant (darad) pain and (bhram) doubts. 1.

 

ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥੨॥

Niṯ uṯẖ gāvhu parabẖ kī baṇī.   Āṯẖ pahar har simrahu parāṇī. ||2||

 

(Nit) ever (gaavahu) sing/remember (baani = words) commands of (prabh) the Almighty on (utth-i) getting up in the morning and (simrahu) remember/obey (har-i) the Almighty (aatth = eight X pahar = eight hour period – 24 hours) round the clock, o (praani = creature) human being. 2. 

 

ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ॥ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਜਹ ਹਉ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥

Gẖar bāhar parabẖ sabẖnī thā▫ī.   Sang sahā▫ī jah ha▫o jā▫ī. ||3||

 

(Prabh-u) the Almighty is present (ghar-i = in house) within and (baahar-i) outside at (sabhni) all (thaaee) places; and is (sang-i) with me (sahaaee) to help (jah) wherever (hau) I (jaaee) go. 3.

 

ਦੁਇ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥੪॥੯॥

Ḏu▫e kar joṛ karī arḏās.   Saḏā jape Nānak guṇṯās. ||4||9||

 

With (duey) the two (kar) hands (jorr-i) folded, I (kari) make (ardaas-i) supplication to enable that fifth Nanak – the seeker – (sadaa) ever (japey) remembers/obeys the Almighty (guntaas) treasure/source of virtues. 4. 9.

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਈਐ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5.   Pārbarahm parabẖ sugẖaṛ sujāṇ.  Gur pūrā pā▫ī▫ai vadbẖāgī ḏarsan ka▫o jā▫ī▫ai kurbāṇ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in raga Prabhaati. (Paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being, our (prabh-u) Master is (sugharr = skilled) Omnipotent and (sujaan-u = well-informed) Omniscient. (Poora) the perfect (gur-u) guru who leads to the Almighty is (paaeeai) found (vaddbhaagi) with good fortune; we should (jaaeeai kurbaan-u = be sacrifice) give up ego and do bidding of the guru (kau) to obtain (darsan) vision of the Almighty. 1.

ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਹੋਆ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਆ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

Kilbikẖ mete sabaḏ sanṯokẖ.   Nām arāḏẖan ho▫ā jog.  Sāḏẖsang ho▫ā pargās.   Cẖaran kamal man māhi nivās. ||1||

 

(Kibikh) wrongdoings (meyttey = effaced) are given up by (santokh-u = contentment) happily obeying (sabad-i = of the word) of Divine commands. One is (hoaa) is thus (jog-u) enabled/fit (araadhan) to invoke Naam/Divine commands.

(Pargaas-u) enlightenment of the mind (hoaa) happens (saadhsang-i) in holy congregation – where virtues and commands of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to practice. Then God’s (charan kamal) lotus feet (nivaas-u) abide (maah-i) in (man) the mind, i.e. one becomes aware of Naam – and practices it. 1.

 

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਲੀਆ ਰਾਖਿ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਅਨਾਥ ਕਾ ਨਾਥੁ ॥ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਆਚਾਰ ॥੨॥

Jin kī▫ā ṯin lī▫ā rākẖ.   Parabẖ pūrā anāth kā nāth.  Jisahi nivāje kirpā ḏẖār.   Pūran karam ṯā ke ācẖār. ||2||

 

The Creator (jin-i) who (keeaa) created, (tin-i) That (leeaa raakh-i) keeps protected, i.e. one who obeys the Almighty remains free of vices. (Poora = full) the all-pervasive (prabh-u) Almighty is (naath-u) Master/ameliorator of (anaath = master-less) the hapless – one who falls to vices.

One (jisah-i) on whom God (dhaar-i = bestowing, kirpa = kindness) is kind, (nivaajey) confers awareness of Naam to him/her; (key = of, ta = that) his/her (karam) deeds and (aachaar) conduct are (pooran) perfect/successful, i.e. s/he is approved by the Almighty. 2.

 

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਨਵੇ ॥ ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਭਵੇ ॥ ਈਹਾਂ ਊਹਾਂ ਚਰਣ ਪੂਜਾਰੇ ॥ ਮੁਖੁ ਊਜਲੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥੩॥

Guṇ gāvai niṯ niṯ niṯ nave.   Lakẖ cẖa▫orāsīh jon na bẖave.  hāʼn ūhāʼn cẖaraṇ pūjāre.   Mukẖ ūjal sācẖe ḏarbāre. ||3||

 

S/he (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) Divine virtues (nit = ever – thrice) in thought, word and deed finding them ever (navey = new) giving fresh fervor. Such a person does not (bhavey = wander) go through (chauraasih) the eighty four lakh (jon-i) life forms, i.e. is freed from cycles of births and deaths – by attaining union with the Creator.

S/he has his/her (charan) feet (poojaarey) worshipped, i.e. receives honor, (eehaa = here) in life and (oohaa = there) in the hereafter; s/he has (oojal-u) a clean (mukh-u) face, i.e. no faults are found with him/her, in (darbaarey) court (saachey) of the Eternal – and accepted for union by the Almighty. 3.

 

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਧਰਿਆ ਹਾਥੁ ॥ ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਪੇਖੈ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰਸਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ॥੪॥੧੦॥

Jis masṯak gur ḏẖari▫ā hāth.   Kot maḏẖe ko virlā ḏās.  Jal thal mahī▫al pekẖai bẖarpūr.   Nānak uḏẖras ṯis jan kī ḏẖūr. ||4||10||

 

One on (jis-u) whose (mastak-i) forehead (gur-i) the guru (dhariaa) has placed his (haatth-u) hand, i.e. is blessed with the guru’s guidance and s/he complies. There is (ko) some (virla) rare such (daas-u = servant) a devotee (madhey) amongst (koot-i) crores.

S/he (peykhai) sees the Almighty (bharpoor-i = filling) pervading (jal-i) in water, (thal-i) on/in land and (maheeal-i) in space; everyone (udhras-i = rises above) is saved from vices (dhhoor-i) with dust of feet, i.e. by humbly following the example, (ki) of (tis-u) that (jan) devotee, says fifth Nanak. 4. 10.

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਜਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਅਪਨੇ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਨੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5.   Kurbāṇ jā▫ī gur pūre apne.   Jis parsāḏ har har jap japne. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in raga Prabhaati.  I (kurbaan jaaee = am sacrifice) adore and obey (apney = own) my (poorey) perfect (gur) guru; by (jis) whose (prasaad-i) grace/guidance, I (japney) recall and obey (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (jap-u = what is to be remembered) Naam/Divine commands. 1.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਤ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਏ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੧॥

Amriṯ baṇī suṇaṯ nihāl.   Binas ga▫e bikẖi▫ā janjāl. ||1||

 

One (sunat) listening to (amrit) the life giving (baani) word/guidance of the guru is (nihaal) pleasing. All (janjaal) entanglements/attachments with (bikhiaa) vices (binas-i gaey = destroyed) are broken with it. 1.

 

ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਆਇਆ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੨॥

Sācẖ sabaḏ si▫o lāgī parīṯ.   Har parabẖ apunā ā▫i▫ā cẖīṯ. ||2||

 

One (laagi) develops (preet-i) love/yearning to live (siau) by (saach) the eternal (sabad = word) Divine commands; and (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master (apuna = own) of all (aaiaa = comes) is kept (cheet-i) in mind. 2.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਹੋਆ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੇ ਕੀਨਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੩॥

Nām japaṯ ho▫ā pargās.   Gur sabḏe kīnā riḏai nivās. ||3||

 

(Pargaas) enlightenment of the mind (hoaa) happens by (japat) recalling Naam/Divine commands, when (sabdey = words) teachings of the guru (keenaa = make, nivaas-u = residence) abide (ridai) in mind. 3.

ਗੁਰ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

Gur samrath saḏā ḏa▫i▫āl.   Har jap jap Nānak bẖa▫e nihāl. ||4||11||

 

(Gur) the guru – the embodiment of the Almighty – is (samrath) potent and (sadaa) ever (daiaal) kind, to guide; those who follow the guru (japi-i jap-i) ever remember/obey (har-i) the Almighty and (bhaey) are (nihaal) happy/successful – they overcome temptations and find the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 4. 11.

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਪਿ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5.   Gur gur karaṯ saḏā sukẖ pā▫i▫ā.   Ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl bẖa▫e kirpālā apṇā nām āp japā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in raga Prabhaati. (Sukh-u) peace is (sadaa) ever (paaiaa) experienced by one who (karat = does, gur-u gur-u = great – twice) by praising, and emulating virtues of, the Almighty. This happens when the Almighty, (bhaey) is (kirpaala) kind to cause (deen = poor) the humble seeker to (japaaiaa = cause to recall) recall/obey (apna = own) Divine (naam-u) Naam/commands. 1.

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਈ ਆਸ ॥੧॥

Sanṯsangaṯ mil bẖa▫i▫ā pargās.   Har har japaṯ pūran bẖa▫ī ās. ||1||

 

(Pragaas = light) enlightenment/awareness of Naam (bhaiaa) occurs (mil-i = meeting) by joining (santsangat-i) congregation of the guru/holy congregation – where the Almighty is praised and learnt to obey.

(Aas) the wish to find the Almighty (bhaee) is (pooran) fulfilled (japat) by recalling and obeying (har- har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating Naam of the Almighty. 1.

 

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੂਖ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੂਠੇ ॥੨॥੧੨॥

Sarab kali▫āṇ sūkẖ man vūṯẖe.   Har guṇ gā▫e gur Nānak ṯūṯẖe. ||2||12||

 

(Sarab) all (kaliaan) happiness and (sookh) comforts/peace (vootthey) abide (man-i) in, i.e. experienced by the mind; when the guru (tootthey) is pleased to guide to (gaaey = singing) praise/emulate (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty. 2. 12.

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5 gẖar 2 bibẖās   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in raga Prabhaati (bibhaas) to be sung at dawn, (ghar-u 2) in the second beat. 

 

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਠਾਉ ॥ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਸਰਬ ਸਿਧਿ ਕਲਿਆਨ ॥ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥

Avar na ḏūjā ṯẖā▫o.   Nāhī bin har nā▫o.  Sarab siḏẖ kali▫ān.   Pūran hohi sagal kām. ||1||

 

There is no (avar-u) other (dooja) second (tthaau = place) source for succor; (naahi) none (bin-u) except (naau) Naam of (har-i) the Almighty – can save one from vices in life and from rebirth after death.

(Sarab) all (sidh-i) success, (kaliaan) happiness and (pooran) fulfilment of (kaam = desires) aspirations (hoh-i) comes with obedience of Naam. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਨੀਤ ॥ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਲਗੈ ਏਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har ko nām japī▫ai nīṯ.  Kām kroḏẖ ahaʼnkār binsai lagai ekai parīṯ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

We should (neet) ever (japeeai) recall/obey Naam/commands (ko) of (har-i) the Almighty. (Kaam) lust, (krodh) anger and (ahankaar-u) vanity (binsey = destroyed) leave with (eykai = one) single-minded (preet-i) love/obedience to the Almighty (lagai) develops. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਾਗੈ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਾਲਨ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਜਮੁ ਨ ਤੇਟੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥

Nām lāgai ḏūkẖ bẖāgai saran pālan jog.   Saṯgur bẖetai jam na ṯetai jis ḏẖur hovai sanjog. ||2||

 

(Dookh-u) the vice – ego – (bhaagai = runs away) leaves one who (laagai) applies the self to obedience (naam-i) of Naam/Divine commands of the Almighty who is (jog-u) capable of (paalan = nurturing) looking after those who place themselves in Divine (saran-i) care and obedience.

This happens (bheyttai) by finding/obeying (satigur-u) the true guru, – then one keeps vices at bay – and (jam-u) the agent of Divine justice does not (teyttai) eye one (jis-u) who (hovai) has (sanjog) association with, i.e. remembers and obeys, (dhur-i = with the source) with the Almighty. 2.

 

ਰੈਨਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਜਹੁ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਮ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਮ ॥੩॥

Rain ḏinas ḏẖi▫ā▫e har har ṯajahu man ke bẖaram. Sāḏẖsangaṯ har milai jisahi pūran karam. ||3||

 

(Tajahu) give up (bharam) delusions (key) of (man) the mind and (dhiaaey) pay attention to/obey (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating Naam of the Almighty (rain-i) night and (dinas-u) day.

(Har-i) the Almighty (milai) is found by joining (saadhsangat-i) company of the guru/holy congregation; this happens for one (jisah-i) who receives (pooran = perfect) Divine (karam) grace. 3.

 

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਬਿਖਾਦ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਆਪਿ ॥ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੀਤ ਭਾਈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩॥

Janam janam bikẖāḏ binse rākẖ līne āp. Māṯ piṯā mīṯ bẖā▫ī jan Nānak har har jāp. ||4||1||13||

 

The accumulated influence of (bikhaad) vices of (janam janam) birth after birth (binsey = destroyed) is rid with practice of Naam; the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (raakh-i leenay) protects from the vices.

(Jaap-i) by recalling/obeying (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating Naam, the Almighty helps like (maat) the mother, (pitaa) father and (meet) friends do, says (jan) humble fifth Nanak. 4. 1. 13.

ਰਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਜਾਪ ॥ ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰ ਤਾਪ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5 bibẖās paṛ▫ṯāl   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.   Ram rām rām rām jāp.   Kal kales lobẖ moh binas jā▫e ahaʼn ṯāp. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in raga Prabhaati, (parrtaal) with varying rhythm, (bibhaas) to be sung at dawn.   Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

(Jaap) keep in mind/obey (raam) the all-pervasive (raam = God – thrice) in thought, word and deed.

(Kaleys) strife caused (kal-i) by conflict/duality, and (taap = ailments) the vices of (lobh) greed, (moh) worldly attachments and (aha’n) ego (binas-i jaaey = destroyed) end with practice of Naam. 1.

 (Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਆਪੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਚਰਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਹਿ ਪਾਪ ॥੧॥

Āp ṯi▫āg sanṯ cẖaran lāg man paviṯ jāhi pāp. ||1||

 

(Tiaag-i) give up (aap-i = self) ego, (laag-i = attach to, charan = feet) follow guidance of (sant) the saints/seekers. This way (man-u) the mind (pavit-u = pure) is purified and (paap) transgressions (jaah-i = leave) are given up. 1.

 

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਰਾਖਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਾਈ ਬਾਪ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੪॥

Nānak bārik kacẖẖū na jānai rākẖan ka▫o parabẖ mā▫ī bāp. ||2||1||14||

 

(Baarik-u) the child – naturally obedient – (Nanak-u) fifth Nanak, looks to (prabh-u) the Almighty as (maaee = mother, baap = father) parents and (jaanai) knows/thinks of (kachhoo na) nothing else (kau) for (raakhan) protection. 2. 1. 14.

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5.   Cẖaran kamal saran tek.  Ūcẖ mūcẖ be▫anṯ ṯẖākur sarab ūpar ṯuhī ek. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O Almighty, I have placed myself (saran-i = sanctuary) in care of, and obedience to (kamal = lotus, charan = feet) You, (tteyk = support) the mainstay. (Tuhi) You are (eyk = one) unique; (ooch) the highest, (mooch) greatest and (beyant-u) Infinite (tthaakur) Master (oopar-i) above (oopar-i) all. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਦਾਰ ਦੈਨਹਾਰ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥੧॥

Parān aḏẖār ḏukẖ biḏār ḏainhār buḏẖ bibek. ||1||

 

You are (adhaar) support/controller of (praan) life; You (bidaar) destroy (dukh) distress and (dainhaar) impart (bibeyk) discerning (budh-i) intellect. 1.

 

ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਰਖਨਹਾਰ ਮਨਿ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਕ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਰੇਨੁ ਕਰਉ ਮਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੁਖ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੫॥

Namaskār rakẖaṇhār man arāḏẖ parabẖū mek.  Sanṯ ren kara▫o majan Nānak pāvai sukẖ anek. ||2||2||15||

 

I pay (namaskaar) obeisance to You (rakhanhaar) the protector and (araadh-i) invoke You (prabhoo) the Almighty (meyk) alone.

Please enable that I (karau) take (majan) bath of (reyn-u) dust of the feet, i.e. follow the purifying example, (sant = saints) those who live by Divine commands; so that my mind (paavai) experiences (sukh) comforts/peace (aneyk = numerous) under all circumstances, says fifth Nanak. 2. 2. 15.
