SGGS pp 195-196, Gauri M: 5 (146-151)

 

 

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ਸਗਲ ਤੀਰਥ ਮਜਨ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Parabẖ ke cẖaran man māhi ḏẖi▫ān.   Sagal ṯirath majan isnān. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. Paying (dhiaan-u) attention to (charan = feet) commands of (prab) the Almighty (maah-i) in the mind, cleanses the mind, for which people take (majan isnaan-u) bath at (sagal) at (teerath) holy places. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥   ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har ḏin har simran mere bẖā▫ī.   Kot janam kī mal lėh jā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Meyrey) my (bhaaee) brethren, with (har-i = every, din = day) daily (simran) recalling of (har-i) Divine commands, (mal-u = dirt) influence of wrongdoings of (kott-i = crore) numerous past (janam) births (lah-I jaaee) is removed from the mind. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਸਾਈ ॥   ਮਨ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਸਗਲੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥

Har kī kathā riḏ māhi basā▫ī.   Man bāʼncẖẖaṯ sagle fal pā▫ī. ||2||

 

When (kathaa = description) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty is (basaaee) caused to abide/kept (maah-i) in (rid) mind, i.e. acting as one should, one (paaee) obtains (phal = fruit) fulfilment of (sagely) all purposes (baanchhat) wished by (man) the mind. 2.

 

ਜੀਵਨ ਮਰਣੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥   ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੩॥

Jīvan maraṇ janam parvān.   Jā kai riḏai vasai bẖagvān. ||3||

 

That person is lives (jeevan) life (parvaan-u = approved) by Divine commands and, is approved for union with the Creator after (maran) death; (ja kai) in whose (ridai) mind (bhagvaan-u) the Almighty (vasai = abides) remembered. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ॥   ਜਿਨਾ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਧੂਰੇ ॥੪॥੭੭॥੧੪੬॥

Kaho Nānak se▫ī jan pūre.   Jinā parāpaṯ sāḏẖū ḏẖūre. ||4||77||146||

 

Says fifth Nanak: (Seyee) only those persons (poorey = complete) fulfil this, (jinaa) who (praapat-i) receive (dhoorey) dust of feet of, i.e. obtain awareness of Naam from, (saadhoo) the guru. 3. 77. 146.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਖਾਦਾ ਪੈਨਦਾ ਮੂਕਰਿ ਪਾਇ ॥   ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਦੂਤ ਧਰਮਰਾਇ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Kẖāḏā painḏā mūkar pā▫e.   Ŧis no johėh ḏūṯ ḏẖaramrā▫e. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. Everyone (khaadaa) eats food and (painda) wears clothes, i.e. provided wherewithal by the Almighty; one who (mookar-i paaey = deny) does not acknowledge/obey the Almighty, (tis no) that person (johah-i) is eyed/detained by (doot) agents of Dharamraaey, the metaphoric judge in Divine court – such a person cannot unite with the Creator. 1.

 

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਬੇਮੁਖੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦੀਨਾ ॥   ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਭਰਮਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਜੂਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ŧis si▫o bemukẖ jin jī▫o pind ḏīnā.   Kot janam bẖarmėh baho jūnā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

One who (beymukh= without face to) turns away from the Creator (jin-i) who

(deena) gave (jeeo) soul and (pindd-u) body – i.e. does not live by divine commands, that person (bharmah-i = wanders) goes through (kott-i = crores) numerous (janam) births in (bah-u) may (joonaa) life forms. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਸਾਕਤ ਕੀ ਐਸੀ ਹੈ ਰੀਤਿ ॥   ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥

Sākaṯ kī aisī hai rīṯ.   Jo kicẖẖ karai sagal biprīṯ. ||2||

 

(Asee) such is (reet-i) practice of (saakat) one who turns away from God; (jo kichh-u) whatever s/he (karai) does is (sagal) all by self-will and (bipreet-i) against Divine commands. 2.

 

ਜੀਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥   ਸੋਈ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥੩॥

Jī▫o parāṇ jin man ṯan ḏẖāri▫ā.   So▫ī ṯẖākur manhu bisāri▫ā. ||3||

 

The Almighty (jin-i) who (dhaariaa) gave (jeeo) the soul, (praan = breaths) life, (man) mined and (tan-u) body, the Saakat (bisaariaa) forgets, i.e. ignores to obey, (soee) that (tthaakur-u) Master. 3.

 

ਬਧੇ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਬਹੁ ਕਾਗਰ ॥   ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ॥੪॥

Baḏẖe bikār likẖe baho kāgar.   Nānak uḏẖar kirpā sukẖ sāgar. ||4||

 

His/her (bikaar) transgressions (badhey) increase and written – figuratively – on (bah-u) numerous (kaagar = papers) pages – and suffers consequences. One (udhar-u) rises above transgressions with (kripa) grace of the Almighty (saagar = ocean) source of (sukh) comforts/solace, says fifth Nanak. 4.

 

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥   ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਤਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੭੮॥੧੪੭॥

Pārbarahm ṯerī sarṇā▫e.   Banḏẖan kāt ṯarai har nā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o ḏūjā. ||78||147||

 

O (paarbrahm) Supreme Spirit, I place myself in (teyri) Your (sarnaaey = sanctuary) care and obedience. One whom You lead to the guru, the guru’s guidance (kaat-i) cuts (bandhan) bondage to vices and s/he (tarai = swims) overcomes vices/obviates rebirths by obeying (har-i) Divine (naaey = naam) commands.

(Dooja) second (rahaau) pause to reflect. 78. 147.

 

Note: Rahaau dooja or second pause occurs in many Shabads to either answer a question asked in the first Rahaau or affirm what it says. The first Rahaau above, mentioned people being reborn for disobeying God. This second Rahaau says one escapes rebirths by obeying Naam/Divine commands.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਅਪਨੇ ਲੋਭ ਕਉ ਕੀਨੋ ਮੀਤੁ ॥   ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦੁ ਦੀਤੁ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Apne lobẖ ka▫o kīno mīṯ.   Sagal manorath mukaṯ paḏ ḏīṯ. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. The Creator is gracious; although we (keeno) make (meet = friends) friends/pray to IT (ko) for (apney = own, lobh = greed) self-interest, IT not only fulfils (sagal) all (manorath = purposes) wishes, but also (deet-u = gives) grants (pad-u) state of (mukt-i) emancipation from evil – and thus cycles of reincarnation. 1.

 

ਐਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥   ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Aisā mīṯ karahu sabẖ ko▫e.   Jā ṯe birthā ko▫e na ho▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Let us (sabh-u koey) all (karah-u) make (aisa) such a (meet) friend (ja tey) from whom (koey na) no one (hoe = happens) goes (birtha) empty-handed. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਅਪੁਨੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥   ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਰੋਗ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਆ ॥੨॥

Apunai su▫ā▫e riḏai lai ḏẖāri▫ā.   Ḏūkẖ ḏaraḏ rog sagal biḏāri▫ā. ||2||

 

People (lai dhaaria) bring the Creator (ridai) to mind for (apunai suaaey) self-interest, but the beneficent Master (bidaaria) banishes (sagal) all (dookk) grief, (darad) pain and (rog) maladies. 2.

 

ਰਸਨਾ ਗੀਧੀ ਬੋਲਤ ਰਾਮ ॥   ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਏ ਸਗਲੇ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥

Rasnā gīḏẖī bolaṯ rām.   Pūran ho▫e sagle kām. ||3||

 

One whose (rasna) tongue (geedhi) gets used to (bolat) saying/praising (raam) the Almighty, (sagle) all his/her (kaam) purposes (hoey) are (pooran) accomplished – wishes fulfilled. 3.

 

ਅਨਿਕ ਬਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਾ ॥   ਸਫਲ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੭੯॥੧੪੮॥

Anik bār Nānak balihārā.   Safal ḏarsan gobinḏ hamārā. ||4||79||148||

 

Says Nanak: I (balihaara = am sacrifice to) adore the Creator (anik) countless (baar) times – i.e. ever submit – to (hamaara) my (gobind = master of the universe) Master whose (darsan = vision) discovery in the mind is (saphal) fruitful – fulfils all aspirations. 4.59. 148.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਘਨ ਹਿਰੇ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਸੁਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5. Kot bigẖan hire kẖin māhi.   Har har kathā sāḏẖsang sunāhi. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (koyt-i) crores of (bighan) obstacles in his/her way are (hirey = taken away) removed (khin maahi) momentarily – with the Master’s grace, of those who (sunaah-i) listen to (kathaa) discourse on (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating virtues and commands, and conform to them. 1.

 

ਪੀਵਤ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਜਾਸੁ ॥   ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਮਿਟੀ ਖੁਧਿ ਤਾਸੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Pīvaṯ rām ras amriṯ guṇ jās.   Jap har cẖaraṇ mitī kẖuḏẖ ṯās. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

One who (peevat) drinks/listens (amrit) the life-giving (raam ras-u) Divine elixir, and (jaas-u) praises (gun) Divine virtues, his/her (khudh-i) hunger and (taas) thirst (mitti = erased) are removed, i.e. s/he craves no more (jap-i) by remembering (har-i charan) Creator’s feet – i.e. submitting to Divine commands (Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥   ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਹਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੨॥

Sarab kali▫āṇ sukẖ sahj niḏẖān.   Jā kai riḏai vasėh bẖagvān. ||2||

 

(Sarab) all joy, (sukh) comfort (sahj) poise and (nidhaan) treasures are received by one (ja kai) in whose (ridai) mind (bhagvaan) the Almighty (vasah-i = abides) is remembered. 2.

ਅਉਖਧ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਤੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਛਾਰੁ ॥   ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਰਿਦੇ ਮਹਿ ਧਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

A▫ukẖaḏẖ manṯar ṯanṯ sabẖ cẖẖār.   Karṇaihār riḏe mėh ḏẖār. ||3||

 

(Aukhadh ) medicines, (mantr tant) mantras and tantra are (sabh) all (chhaar-u = dust) useless – for attaining peace. Instead, (dhaar-u) keep (karanihaar-u) the Creator (mah-i) in (ridai) mind, i.e. obey Divine commands to be at peace. 3.

 

ਤਜਿ ਸਭਿ ਭਰਮ ਭਜਿਓ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥   ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਟਲ ਇਹੁ ਧਰਮੁ ॥੪॥੮੦॥੧੪੯॥

Ŧaj sabẖ bẖaram bẖaji▫o pārbarahm.   Kaho Nānak atal ih ḏẖaram. ||4||80||149||

 

(Taj-i) give up (sabh-i) all (bharam) doubts on this and (bhaj = remember) invoke (paarbrahm) the Supreme Spirit. (Eyho) this is (atal = inevitable) the unfailing (dharam) law, says fifth Nanak. 4. 80. 149.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭੇਟੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਈ ॥   ਤਿਤੁ ਬਲਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5   Kar kirpā bẖete gur so▫ī.   Ŧiṯ bal rog na bi▫āpai ko▫ī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Soee) only that person (bheyttey) meets/follows (gur) the guru on whom the Almighty (kar-i) bestows (kirpa) kindness. With (tit-u) that strength, (na koee) no (rog = disease) vice can (biaapai) afflict that person. 1.

 

ਰਾਮ ਰਮਣ ਤਰਣ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ॥   ਸਰਣਿ ਸੂਰ ਫਾਰੇ ਜਮ ਕਾਗਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Rām ramaṇ ṯaraṇ bẖai sāgar.   Saraṇ sūr fāre jam kāgar. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Raman) remembering (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty – i.e. living by Divine virtue/commands; is (taran) the ship for crossing the (bhai) the world (saagar) ocean – by overcoming vices of the world-play. Being (saran-i = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (soor = warrior) the all-powerful Master, – one commits novices and – (kaagar = papers) account of deeds is (phaarey = torn) destroyed – i.e. all transgressions are forgiven and the soul becomes acceptable to the Creator.  1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ॥   ਇਹ ਆਸਰ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਏ ਕਾਮ ॥੨॥

Saṯgur manṯar ḏī▫o har nām. Ih āsar pūran bẖa▫e kām. ||2||

 

One whom (satgur-i) the true guru (deeo) gives (mantr-u) the mantra/instruction to conform to (harii naam) Divine virtues and commands it is emulated in practice. With (ih = this, aasar = support) guidance his/her (kaam) purposes (bhaey) are (pooran) accomplished. 2. ===============

 

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਪੂਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥   ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹਰਿ ਭਏ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੩॥

Jap ṯap sanjam pūrī vadi▫ā▫ī.   Gur kirpāl har bẖa▫e sahā▫ī. ||3||

 

People do (jap, tap, sanjam) recitation of mantras, penances and control of action organs, to get (vaddiaaee = virtue) credit with the Almighty, but the real success comes when (har-i) the Creator (bhaey sahaaee) helps to find the (kirpal) compassionate guru – and his teachings are followed. 3.

 

ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਖੋਏ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮ ॥   ਪੇਖੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਸਰੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ॥੪॥੮੧॥੧੫੦॥

Mān moh kẖo▫e gur bẖaram.   Pekẖ Nānak pasre pārbarahm. ||4||81||150||

 

In delusion, people search for the Almighty with their own efforts; but only when one finds the guru is the (bharam) delusion caused by (maan) pride and (moh) lure of temptations is (khoey = lost) removed. One then (peykh-u) sees/experiences (paarbrahm) the Supreme Spirit (pasrey) pervading everywhere – including the self and seeks the experience within. 4. 81. 150.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਬਿਖੈ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਭਾਰੀ ॥   ਦੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Bikẖai rāj ṯe anḏẖulā bẖārī.   Ḏukẖ lāgai rām nām cẖiṯārī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. One (andhula) blinded (tey) with (bikhai) vicious rule/authority feels (bhaari = weighty) powerful. But s/he (chitaari) thinks of conducting the self by (naam-u) Divine commands, when s/he (laagai) suffers (dukh-i) fief for his/her deeds. 1.

 

ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਤੁਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥   ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ŧere ḏās ka▫o ṯuhī vadi▫ā▫ī.   Mā▫i▫ā magan narak lai jā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O Almighty, (tuhi) You alone are the source of (vaddiaaee) the glory for (terey) Your (daas = servants) devotees. Being (magan) engrossed in temptations of (maaia) the world-play, (lai jaai = takes) leads to (narak = hell) remaining in cycles of reincarnation. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਰੋਗ ਗਿਰਸਤ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ਨਾਉ ॥   ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਤੇ ਕਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥੨॥

Rog girsaṯ cẖiṯāre nā▫o.   Bikẖ māṯe kā ṯẖa▫ur na ṯẖā▫o. ||2||

 

People (chitaarey) think of obeying (naau) Divine commands (girast) caught in (rog) afflictions/suffering. One (maatee) intoxicated by the (bikh-u = poison) temptations in the world-play (ka) has no (tthaur) place/support in the world or (tthau = place) acceptance in the hereafter. 2.

 

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥   ਆਨ ਸੁਖਾ ਨਹੀ ਆਵਹਿ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੩॥

Cẖaran kamal si▫o lāgī parīṯ.   Ān sukẖā nahī āvahi cẖīṯ. ||3||

 

The joy of (laagi) having (preet-i) love (sio) for (charan kamal = lotus feet) obedience of the Almighty is such that, (aan = other) transitory (sukha = comforts) pleasures (nahi) do not (aavah-i) come to (cheet) mind. 3.

 

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥   ਮਿਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੪॥੮੨॥੧੫੧॥

Saḏā saḏā simra▫o parabẖ su▫āmī.   Mil Nānak har anṯarjāmī. ||4||82||151||

 

I (sadaa sadaa) forever (simrau) invoke (prabh) the Almighty (suaami) Master and pray: (mil-u = meet) please enable me to find you (antarjaami) within, says fifth Nanak. 4. 82. 151.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਕਰੈ ਦੁਹਕਰਮ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥   ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਬਾਧਾ ਚੋਰੁ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Karai ḏuhkaram ḏikẖāvai hor.   Rām kī ḏargėh bāḏẖā cẖor. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. A person (karai) does (duhkaram) evil but (dikhaavai) shows (hor) something different – but nothing is hidden from the Almighty within, the conscience; the impostor is treated and (baadha) is bound like a (chor) thief in (dargah) the court of  – i.e. when judged by – (raam = the all-pervasive) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਰਾਮੁ ਰਮੈ ਸੋਈ ਰਾਮਾਣਾ ॥   ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਏਕੁ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Rām ramai so▫ī rāmāṇā.   Jal thal mahī▫al ek samāṇā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

One who (ramai) is absorbed in/conforms to directions of (raam-u) of the all-pervasive (soee) only that person alone (ramaana = is of raam) belongs to the Almighty. (Eyk-u) the One Almighty (smaanaa) is present in creatures (jal-i) in water, (thal-i) in/on land and (maheeal-i) space. 1.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥   ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

Anṯar bikẖ mukẖ amriṯ suṇāvai.   Jam pur bāḏẖā cẖotā kẖāvai. ||2||

 

One who has (bikh-u) poison/deceit (santar-i) within but (sunaavai) speaks (amrit-u) sweet words, that impostor is (baadhaa = bound) detained (jampur-i = town of Divine justice) by Divine court and (khaavai = receives, chottaa = hits) sent back, i.e. not approved by the Almighty. 2.

 

ਅਨਿਕ ਪੜਦੇ ਮਹਿ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥   ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋਹਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥੩॥

Anik paṛ▫ḏe mėh kamāvai vikār.   Kẖin mėh pargat hohi sansār. ||3||

 

S/he (kamaavai) commits (vikaar) vices (mah-i = in) behind (anik) many (parrdey) curtains, i.e. in hiding. But this (hoh-i) gets (khin mah-i= in a moment) instantly (pragatt = manifest) known to (sansaar) the world/the conscience within. 3.

 

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥   ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੭੧॥੧੪੦॥

Anṯar sācẖ nām ras rāṯā.   Nānak ṯis kirpāl biḏẖāṯā. ||4||71||140||

 

On the other hand, one (raataa) imbued (ras-i) with love (naam-i) of Naam, i.e. conforms to Naam. (Bidhaataa = maker of laws) the Creator is (kirpal-u) kind, i.e. approves (tis-u) that soul for union, says fifth Nanak. 4. 71. 140.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Rang-u) love for obedience to commands of (raam) the Almighty (kadey na) never (utar-i = removed) fades of one, (jis-u) whom (poora) the perfect guru (dey-I bujhaaey) imparts understanding. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥   ਲਾਲ ਰੰਗ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har rang rāṯā so man sācẖā.   Lāl rang pūran purakẖ biḏẖāṯā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(So) that (man-u = mind) person who is (raata) imbued (rang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty, is (saachaa) truthful. S/he has (laal = red, rang = color) true love for (pooran) the perfect (purakh-u) all-pervasive (bidhaata) creator. 1

ਸੰਤਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥   ਤਾ ਕਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

Sanṯėh sang bais gun gā▫e.   Ŧā kā rang na uṯrai jā▫e. ||2||

 

One who (bais-i) sits (sang-i) with (santah = saints) in holy company/congregation, (ta ka = of that) his/her (rang-u) love for the Almighty does not (utrai jaaey) keep fading, i.e. s/he remains steadfast. 2.

 

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥   ਆਨ ਰੰਗ ਫੀਕੇ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

Bin har simran sukẖ nahī pā▫i▫ā.   Ān rang fīke sabẖ mā▫i▫ā. ||3||

 

(Sukh-u) peace is not (paaiaa) attained, i.e. aspirations are not fulfilled, (bin-u) without (simran) remembrance/obedience to commands of (har-i) the Almighty. (Sabh) all (aan) other (rang = loves) pursuits of (maaiaa) temptations of the world-play (pheekey) fade away, i.e. pleasures of the world are transitory. 3.

 

ਗੁਰਿ ਰੰਗੇ ਸੇ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥   ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥੭੨॥੧੪੧॥

Gur range se bẖa▫e nihāl.   Kaho Nānak gur bẖa▫e hai ḏa▫i▫āl. ||4||72||141||

 

(Sey) those (rangey) dyed/guided (gur-i) by the guru, (bhaey) are (nihaal) happy, i.e. approved by the Almighty. The guru (bhaey hai) is (daiaal) kind, says fifth Nanak. 4. 72. 141.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Kilvikh) vices (naasey = run) are kept away (simrat) by keeping in mind commands of (suaami) the Almighty Master. One (nivaasey) abides in (sookh) comfort, (sahj) poise and (aanand) bliss. 1.

 

ਰਾਮ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਰਾਮ ਭਰੋਸਾ ॥   ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸਭੁ ਮਿਟਿਓ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Rām janā ka▫o rām bẖarosā.   Nām japaṯ sabẖ miti▫o anḏesā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Janaa = servants) devotees of (raam) the Almighty have (bharosa) faith in the Almighty. Their (andeysa) apprehensions are (sabh) all (mittio = erased) obviated (japat) remembrance/obedience of (naam-u) Divine commands. 1.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਕਛੁ ਭਉ ਨ ਭਰਾਤੀ ॥   ਗੁਣ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥੨॥

Sāḏẖsang kacẖẖ bẖa▫o na bẖarāṯī.   Guṇ gopāl gā▫ī▫ah ḏin rāṯī. ||2||

 

There is (kachh-u na = not any) no (bhau) fear or (bharaati) straying when (saadhsang-i) in company/with guidance of the guru. One (gaaeeah-i = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (gopaal) the Almighty Sustainer of the world (din-u) day and (raati) night. 2.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੰਧਨ ਛੋਟ ॥   ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਕੀ ਦੀਨੀ ਓਟ ॥੩॥

Kar kirpā parabẖ banḏẖan cẖẖot.   Cẖaraṇ kamal kī ḏīnī ot. ||3||

 

(Prabh) the Almighty (kar-i kirpa) kindly (chhott) frees from (bandhan) bondage to the world-play, (deenee) giving (ott) protection with awareness of (kamal) lotus (charan) feet, i.e. Divine virtues and commands – through the guru. 3.

 

For those who have faith in Ekankaar, they obtain (ot) protection in the sanctuary (charan kamal = lotus feet) of the impeccable Master, who by IT’s (kirpa) grace grants (chhot) freedom from (bandhan) bondage – to the vices in the world-play; with this the soul becomes acceptable for merger with the Creator. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਭਈ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ॥   ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਸੁ ਪੀਵਹਿ ਜਨ ਨੀਤਿ ॥੪॥੭੩॥੧੪੨॥

Kaho Nānak man bẖa▫ī parṯīṯ.   Nirmal jas pīvėh jan nīṯ. ||4||73||142||

 

Says fifth Nanak: One who (bhaee) has (parteet-i) awareness of Naam (man-i) in mind. That (jan) person (neet-i) ever (peevah-i) drinks the elixir of, i.e. lives by, (nirmal) the pristine (jas-u = praise) Divine virtues. 4. 73. 142.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. One (ja ka) whose (man) mind (laaga) engages in (charni) feet, i.e. obedience of commands of (har-i) the Almighty; (ta ka = of that) his/her (dookh) discomfort, (darad-u) pain and (bhram- = wandering) lack of poise (bhaaga = runs) ends. 1.

 

Note: The next verse uses the term ਵਾਪਾਰੀ (vaapaari) meaning a trader, who buys and sells. This is used as a metaphor for human conduct. The way business needs capital the humans have been provided the capital of Naam or Divine virtues by the Creator with which they are to conduct themselves.

 

ਹਰਿ ਧਨ ਕੋ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਪੂਰਾ ॥   ਜਿਸਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har ḏẖan ko vāpārī pūrā.   Jisahi nivāje so jan sūrā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

That person is (poora) perfect (vaapaari) merchant (ko) of (har-i) Divine (dhan) wealth, i.e. properly conducts the self by Divine virtues and commands, (jisah-i) whom the Almighty (nivaajey = honors) imparts awareness of Naam – by leading to the guru; (so) such (jan-u) a person is (soora = warrior) overcomes temptations in the world. 1.

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥   ਸੇ ਜਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥

Jā ka▫o bẖa▫e kirpāl gusā▫ī.   Se jan lāge gur kī pā▫ī. ||2||

 

Those (kau) to (ja) whom (gusaaee) the Master of the world (bhaey) is (kripaal) kind; they are led to (laagey) touch (paaee) feet, i.e. follow guidance, (ki) of (gur) the guru. 2

 

ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਆਨੰਦਾ ॥   ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੇ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੩॥

Sūkẖ sahj sāʼnṯ ānanḏā.   Jap jap jīve parmānanḏā. ||3||

 

They experience (sookh) comfort, (sahaj) poise, (saant-i) peace and (ananda) bliss; they (jap-i jap-i) keep in mind commands of the Almighty (jeevey = live) not falling prey to vices and enjoy (parmananda) supreme bliss. 3.

 

ਨਾਮ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਾਟੀ ॥   ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾਟੀ ॥੪॥੭੪॥੧੪੩॥

Nām rās sāḏẖ sang kẖātī.   Kaho Nānak parabẖ apḏā kātī. ||4||74||143||

 

(Raas-i) the wealth of awareness of (naam) Divine virtues and commands is (khaatti = earned) obtained (sang-i = in company) with guidance of (saadh) the guru; (Prabh-i) the Almighty (kaatti = cuts) obviates (apda) troubles of one who obeys, says fifth Nanak. 4. 74. 143.

This happens with (parveys = entry) keeping (man-i) in (man) mind commands of (charan = feet, kamal = lotus) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਉਚਰਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਖ ਬਾਰੀ ॥   ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ucẖrahu rām nām lakẖ bārī.   Amriṯ ras pīvhu parabẖ pi▫ārī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Uchrah-u = utter) remember and obey (naam-u) commands of (raam) the Almighty a lakh (baari) times, i.e. every moment. O (piaari) dear, (peevah-u) drink (amrit) the life-giving (ras-u) elixir, i.e. lead life by Naam. 1.

ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਰਸ ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦਾ ॥   ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੇ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੨॥

Kām kroḏẖ lobẖ maḏ kẖo▫e.   Sāḏẖ kai sang kilbikẖ sabẖ ḏẖo▫e. ||3||

 

The vices of (kaam) lust, (krodh) anger, (lobh) greed and (mad = intoxication) pride (khoey = lost) are given up. (Sabh) all (kibikh) vices are (dhoey) washed of (sang-i) with company/guidance (kai) of (saadh) the guru. 3.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥   ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲਾ ॥੪॥੭੫॥੧੪੪॥

Kar kirpā parabẖ ḏīn ḏa▫i▫ālā.   Nānak ḏījai sāḏẖ ravālā. ||4||75||144||

 

O (pabh) Almighty, you are (daiaala) kind to (deen) the hapless, please (kar-I kirpa) be kind and (deejai) give/enable to follow (ravaala = dust of feet) guidance of (saadh) the guru, supplicates fifth Nanak, the seeker. 4. 75. 144.

Jis kā ḏī▫ā painai kẖā▫e.   Ŧis si▫o ālas ki▫o banai mā▫e. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. The Creator, whose (deea = gifts) of clothes one (painau) wears and food one (khaaey) eats. It (kiau = how?) does not (banai) behoove to (aalas-u = laziness) be indifferent to commands (siau) of (tias-u = that) the Provider, o my (maaey) mother.

 

ਖਸਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਆਨ ਕੰਮਿ ਲਾਗਹਿ ॥   ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kẖasam bisār ān kamm lāgėh.   Ka▫udī baḏle raṯan ṯi▫āgėh. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

One who (bisaar-I = forgets) ignores commands of (khasam-u) the Master and (laagah-i) engage in (aan) other (kamm = jobs) pursuits – like material gains and pleasures, s/he (taagah-i = gives up) loses (ratan-u) a jewel/ of union with God, (badley) in exchange for (kauddi = shell) eternal comfort of union with the Creator. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਲਾਗਤ ਅਨ ਲੋਭਾ ॥   ਦਾਸਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਕਰਤ ਕਤ ਸੋਭਾ ॥੨॥

Parabẖū ṯi▫āg lāgaṯ an lobẖā.   Ḏās salām karaṯ kaṯ sobẖā. ||2||

 

One who (tiaag-i) forsakes (prabhoo) the Almighty and (laagat) engages in (an) other (lobha = greed) interests, is like forgetting the master and (salaam) saluting (daas-i) a servant, there is (kat = what?) no (sobha) glory in this. 2.

 

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਖਾਵਹਿ ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ॥   ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਸੁਆਨ ॥੩॥

Amriṯ ras kẖāvėh kẖān pān.   Jin ḏī▫e ṯisėh na jānėh su▫ān. ||3||

 

S/he (khaavah-i = eats) consumes (khan) food and (paan) drinks, but the person greedy like (sauaan) a dog des not (jaanah-i = know) acknowledge the Master (jin-i) who (deeay) gave. 3.

 

(khaan paan) food and drink enjoying them like (Amrit ras) delicious elixir but forgets the One who gave them; this is like a stray (suaan) dog forgetting who fed it. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ॥   ਬਖਸਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੪॥੭੬॥੧੪੫॥

Kaho Nānak ham lūṇ harāmī.   Bakẖas leho parabẖ anṯarjāmī. ||4||76||145||

 

Says fifth Nanak. (Ham) we mortals are (haraami = undeserving) thankless for (loon = salt) Divine benedictions. Please (bakhas-i leyh-u) forgive, o (prabh) Almighty Master (antarjaami) within. 4. 76. 145.
