ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭਾਹਿ ਨ ਜਲੈ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਹੀ ਛਲੈ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਡੂਬੈ ਜਲਾ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸੁਫਲ ਫਲਾ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Har sang rāṯe bẖāhi na jalai.   Har sang rāṯe mā▫i▫ā nahī cẖẖalai.   Har sang rāṯe nahī dūbai jalā.  Har sang rāṯe sufal falā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. One does not (jalai) burn (bhaah-i) in fire of craving and jealousy when (raatey = dyed) imbued (sang-i) with love of (har-i) the Creator. (Maaia) temptations in the world-play cannot (chhalai = deceive) lure when (raatey = dyed) imbued (sang-i) with love of (har-i) the Creator.

One (raatey = dyed) imbued (sang-i) with love of (har-i) the Creator (nahi) does not (ddoobey = drown) succumb to (jalaa = water, ocean) the vices in the world ocean. One (raatey = dyed) imbued (sang-i) with love of (har-i) the Creator is (suphal) successful getting (phalaa = fruit) fulfilment of wishes. 1.

 

ਸਭ ਭੈ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੈ ਨਾਇ ॥   ਭੇਟਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sabẖ bẖai mitėh ṯumārai nā▫e   Bẖetaṯ sang har har gun gā▫e. Rahā▫o.

 

O Creator, those who imbibe (tumaarey) your (naaey) virtues – commit no evil and hence – (Sabh) all their (bhai) fears/apprehensions (mittah-i = are erased) are obviated. We should (bheyttat) meet in (sang-i = company) holy congregation and (gaaey = sing) remember Divine virtues. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਭ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥   ਹਰਿ  ਸਿਉ ਸੋ ਰਚੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਾਧ ਕਾ ਮੰਤਾ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਨਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸ॥੨॥

Har sang rāṯe mitai sabẖ cẖinṯā.   Har si▫o so racẖai jis sāḏẖ kā mannṯā   Har sang rāṯe jam kī nahīṯarās.   Har sang rāṯe pūran ās. ||2||

 

(Sabh chinta) all (chinta) anxieties (mitai = are erased) are removed when (raatey) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty. But (so) only that person is (rachai) engages (jis-u) who receives (manta = mantra) guidance (ka) of (saadh) the guru.

Those (nahi) do not have (traas) fear of (jam) Divine justice. (Aas) wishes are (pooran) fulfilled when (raatey) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

 

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਸੈ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਨਸੈ ॥੩॥

Har sang rāṯe ḏūkẖ na lāgai.   Har sang rāṯā an▫ḏin jāgai.   Har sang rāṯā sahj gẖar vasai.   Har sang rāṯe bẖaram bẖa▫o nasai. ||3||

 

(Dookh-u) grief is not (laagai) experienced when (raatey) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty (na) do not (laagai) feel (dookh-u) grief/pain (raatey) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty. Because one (raata) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty (andin-u = day after day) ever (jaaga = awake) vigilant against vices.

One (raata) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty (vasai) remains (ghar-i = in house) in state of (sahaj) poise. All (bhram-u) delusion and (bhau) fear (nasai) leaves when (raatey) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty. 3.

 

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥   ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥   ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ

ਮੇਰਾ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਹੀ॥੪॥੧੦੯॥

Har sang rāṯe maṯ ūṯam ho▫e.   Har sang rāṯe nirmal so▫e.   Kaho Nānak ṯin ka▫o bal jā▫ī.   Jin ka▫o parabẖ merā bisraṯ nāhī ||4||109||

 

(Mat-i) thinking (hoey) becomes (ootam) sublime – free of vices when (raatey) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty. Those (raatey) imbued (sang-i) with love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty (hoey) get (nirmal = clean) good (soey) reputation.

Says fifth Nanak. I (bal-i jaaee = am sacrifice) adore (tin kau) those, (jin kau) by whom (prabh-u) the Master (meyra = my) of all (naahi) is not (bisrat) forgotten, i.e. who conform to Divine virtues and commands. 4. 109.

ਰਸਿ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਨ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Uḏam karaṯ sīṯal man bẖa▫e   Mārag cẖalaṯ sagal ḏukẖ ga▫e   Nām japaṯ man bẖa▫e anand   Ras gā▫e gun parmānanḏ ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. People (bhaey) become of (seetal) cool (man) the mind when they (karat) make (udam) efforts, i.e. obtain awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands. By (chalat) walking on that (maarag-i) path, i.e. emulating Divine virtues and obeying Divine commands, (sagal) all (dukh) afflictions (gaey) leave.

B(Man-i) the mind (bhaey) experiences (anand) bliss (japat) by keeping in mind and obeying (naam-u) Divine commands. One (rasi) relishes (gaaey = singing) praising/emulating (gun) Divine virtues and experience (parmanand) supreme bliss. 1.

 

ਖੇਮ ਭਇਆ ਕੁਸਲ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ॥   ਭੇਟਤ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਗਈ ਬਲਾਏ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kẖem bẖa▫i▫ā kusal gẖar ā▫e   Bẖetaṯ sāḏẖsang ga▫ī balā▫e Rahā▫o

 

One (bhaiaa) becomes (kheym) free of other ideas and (aaey) comes (ghar-I = in house) in state of (kusal) happiness. (balaaey = tormentors) temptations that lure the mind (gaee) leave on (bheyttat) finding (saasdhsang) company/guidance of the guru. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਦਰਸ ॥   ਧਨਿ ਮਸਤਕ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਹੀ ਪਰਸ ॥   ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਸਫਲ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆ ॥

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

Neṯar punīṯ pekẖaṯ hī ḏaras   Ḏẖan masṯak cẖaran kamal hī paras   Gobinḏ kī tahal safal ih kāʼn▫i▫ā   Sanṯ parsāḏ param paḏ pā▫i▫ā ||2||

 

The inner (neytr) the eyes are (puneet) purified on (peykhat hi) immediately on seeing (daras = sight) vision of the Almighty within, i.e. the mind is purified with awareness of Naam. (mastak) the forehead that (paras) touches/bows to (charan kamal = lotus feet) the Almighty (ji) alone is (dhan-i) blessed.

(Ttahal = service) obedience of (gobind) the Master of the world (ih-u) this (kaaniaa) body, i.e. human birth (saphal) successful, i.e. attains union with the Almighty. This (param) sublime (pad-u status) state is (paaiaa) attained (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of (sant) the guru. 2.

ਜਨ ਕੀ ਕੀਨੀ ਆਪਿ ਸਹਾਇ ॥   ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਲਗਿ ਦਾਸਹ ਪਾਇ ॥   ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਭਏ ॥   ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਏ ॥੩॥

Jan kī kīnī āp sahā▫e.   Sukẖ pā▫i▫ā lag ḏāsah pā▫e   Āp ga▫i▫ā ṯā āpėh bẖa▫e.   Kirpā niḏẖān kī sarnīpa▫e. ||3||

 

(Aap-i = self) the Creator IT-self (keeni = renders, sahaaey = help) enables (jan = servant) a seeker, to (lag-i) attach to the (paaey) feet of, i.e. follow, (daasah) the devotees of the Almighty and (paaia) get (sukh) comfort/happiness.

When (aap-u) ego (gaiaa = goes) is dissolved, then one (bhaey) becomes like the Almighty (aapah-i) IT-self; this happens when one (paey) places the self (sarni = in sanctuary) in care and obedience of the Almighty (nidhaan) treasure of (kripa) kindness. 3

 

ਜੋ ਚਾਹਤ ਸੋਈ ਜਬ ਪਾਇਆ ॥   ਤਬ ਢੂੰਢਨ ਕਹਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਇਆ ॥   ਅਸਥਿਰ ਭਏ ਬਸੇ ਸੁਖ ਆਸਨ ॥   ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਬਾਸਨ ॥੪॥੧੧੦॥

Jo cẖāhaṯ so▫ī jab pā▫i▫ā.   Ŧab dẖūdẖan kahā ko jā▫i▫ā.   Asthir bẖa▫e base sukẖ āsan.   Gur parsāḏNānak sukẖ bāsan ||4||110||

 

(Jab) when one (paaia) finds (jo) what one (chaahat) wishes. (tab) then one (jaaiaa) goes (kahaa ko = where?) nowhere (ko) to (ddhoonddhan) search, i.e. all aspirations are met by obeying the Almighty and one needs to look nowhere else.

One (bhaey) becomes (asthir) steady and (basey = dwells) sits on (sukh) a comfortable (aasan) seat, i.e. remains at peace. One (baasan) lives in (sukh) comfort (prasaad-i0 with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru, says fifth Nanak. 4. 110.

 

Such a person experiences the Creator within – and (tab) then (kahaa ko) where is the need for him/her to (jaaiaa) go (dhoodhan ko) in search of the Master – i.e. does not have to go anywhere.

S/he (asthir bhae) attains a stable state of mind and (basey) lives (sukh aasan) on a comfortable seat – i.e. attains a state of poise and (baasan) stays in the state of (sukh) comfort.

This comes (gurprasaadi) with the grace/ guidance of the. 4. 110.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਕੋਟਿ ਮਜਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥   ਲਾਖ ਅਰਬ ਖਰਬ ਦੀਨੋ ਦਾਨੁ ॥   ਜਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5   Kot majan kīno isnān.   Lākẖ arab kẖarab ḏīno ḏān.   Jā man vasi▫o har ko nām. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga GaurriPeople take (kott-i) crores of (majan) dips while (keeno) taking (isnaan) baths at holy places; or (deeney) give (arab) billions and (kharab) trillions in (daan-u) charity; but one does not have to do this (ja) if (naam-u) commands (ko) of (har-i) the Almighty (vasio) abide (man-i) in the mind – and one lives by them.1.

 

ਸਗਲ ਪਵਿਤ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥   ਪਾਪ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਨਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sagal paviṯ gun gā▫e gupāl Pāp mitėh sāḏẖū saran ḏa▫i▫āl Rahā▫o

 

Purification of the mind does not come by baths; (sagal = all) everyone can be (pavit) purified by (gaaey = singing) by praising/emulating (gun) the virtues of (gupaal) the Master of the universe. Similarly, effects of (paap = sins) transgressions (mittah-i) are erased by (saran-i = sanctuary) being in the care and guidance of (daiaal)the kind (saadhoo) guru. 1.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਉਰਧ ਤਪ ਸਾਧਨ ਸਾਧੇ ॥   ਅਨਿਕ ਲਾਭ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਲਾਧੇ ॥   ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸਨ ਆਰਾਧੇ ॥੨॥

Bahuṯ uraḏẖ ṯap sāḏẖan sāḏẖe   Anik lābẖ manorath lāḏẖe   Har har nām rasan ārāḏẖe. ||2||

 

Some people (saadhey) adopt (bahut-u) numerous (saadhan) methods of (tap) austerities being (uradh) being upside down.

 They do these (laadhey) in search/pursuance of (laabh) gain /fulfillment of (anik) many (manorath) aspirations/wishes.

But a devotee of the Almighty (aaraadhey) invokes (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam) Divine virtues and commands. 2.

 

ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਬਖਾਨੇ ॥   ਜੋਗ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿਧ ਸੁਖ ਜਾਨੇ ॥   ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਉ ਮਨ ਮਾਨੇ ॥੩॥

Simriṯ sāsaṯ beḏ bakẖāne   Jog gi▫ān siḏẖ sukẖ jāne.   Nām japaṯ parabẖ si▫o man māne ||3||

 

Some people (bakhaaney) read aloud (smriti, saasat, beyd) scriptural texts.

Others (jaaney = know) consider (sukh) comfort in performing (jog) yogic practices, (giaan) acquiring knowledge of scriptures or (sidh) performing miracles.

But a devotee’s (man) mind (maaney) finds it agreeable/better (japat) remember/obey (naam-u) Divine commands to connect (siau) with the Almighty. 3.

 

ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥   ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥   ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੧੧੧॥

Agāḏẖ boḏẖ har agam apāre  Nām japaṯ nām riḏe bīcẖāre.   Nānak ka▫o parabẖ kirpā ḏẖāre ||4||111||

 

(Har-i) the Almighty is (agaadh-i = bottomless, bodh-i = knowledge) Unfathomable, (agam) beyond comprehension (apaarey) infinite.

The seeker (japat) remembers/obeys (naam-u) Divine commands and (beechaarey) reflects on them (ridey) in mind.

May (prabh) the Almighty (dhaarey) bestow (kirpa) kindness (kau) on fifth Nanak, the seeker to enable that. 4. 111.

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Simar simar simar sukẖ pā▫i▫ā   Cẖaran kamal gur riḏai basā▫i▫ā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga GaurriSince the time I (basaaiaa = caused to dwell) keep (charan kamal = lotus feet) teachings of (gur) the guru (ridai) in mind. I (simar-i simar-i simar-i) keep in mind Divine virtues and commands and (paaiaa) obtain (sukh-u) peace. 1.

 

ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥   ਤਿਸਹਿ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur gobinḏ pārbarahm pūrā  Ŧisėh arāḏẖ merā man ḏẖīrā. Rahā▫o

 

(Gur) the great (gobind-u) the Master, (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Spirit is (poora) all-pervasive.  (Meyra) my (man-u) mind (dheeraa) is comforted (araadh-i) by invoking (tisah-i = that) the Almighty.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਉ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਮ ॥   ਤਾ ਤੇ ਸਿਧਿ ਭਏ ਸਗਲ ਕਾਂਮ ॥੨॥

An▫ḏin japa▫o gurū gur nām   Ŧā ṯe siḏẖ bẖa▫e sagal kāʼnm ||2||

 

I now (andin-u= everyday) ever (japau) remember/conform to (gur) the great (naam) Divine virtues and commands, taught by the guru. (Tey) with (ta) that (sagal) all (kaamm) purposes (bhaey) are (sidh-i) accomplished. 2.

 

ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੀਤਲ ਮਨ ਭਏ ॥   ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਗਏ ॥੩॥

Ḏarsan ḏekẖ sīṯal man bẖa▫e   Janam janam ke kilbikẖ ga▫e ||3||

 

(Man) minds (bhaey) become (seetal) cool/peaceful (deykh-i) seeing (darsan) the vision, i.e. Divine experience within.

With that influence of (kilbikh) wrongdoings of (janam janam) numerous past births (gaey) leave – I now do not act under the influence of vices. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਾ ਭੈ ਭਾਈ ॥   ਅਪਨੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਆਪਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੧੨॥

Kaho Nānak kahā bẖai bẖā▫ī   Apne sevak kī āp paij rakẖā▫ī. ||4||112||

 

Says fifth Nanak: I (kah-u = tell) ask myself, o (bhaaee) brother (kahaa) where have (bhai) the fears gone. The Almighty (rakhaaee) has (rakhaaee) has saved (paij) honor of (apney = own) IT’s (seyvak) servant, i.e. has been kind to me. 4. 112.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਅਪਨੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਸਹਾਈ ॥   ਨਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੈ ਬਾਪ ਜੈਸੇ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5.  Apne sevak ka▫o āp sahā▫ī.   Niṯ praṯipārai bāp jaise mā▫ī. ||1||

 

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga GaurriThe Creator (aapi) by IT-self (sahaaee = helpful) helps (apne = own) IT’s (seyvak) obedient devotees. IT (nit) ever (pratipaarai) looks after them (jaisey) like (baap) father and (maaee) mother take care of their children. 1.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਉਬਰੈ ਸਭ ਕੋਇ ॥   ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parabẖ kī saran ubrai sabẖ ko▫e   Karan karāvan pūran sacẖ so▫e Rahā▫o

 

(Sabh koey) everyone who places the self (saran-i = sanctuary) in care and obedience (ki) of (prabh) the Almighty (ubreai = rises above) overcomes – from vices and afflictions; because (soey = that) the One (pooran) all-pervasive (sach-u) Eternal Master (karan) causes (karaavan) everything to be done.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

 

ਅਬ ਮਨਿ ਬਸਿਆ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰਾ ॥   ਭੈ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਆਤਮ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

Ab man basi▫ā karnaihārā   Bẖai binse āṯam sukẖ sārā. ||2||

 

(Ab) now (karnaihaara) the doer Almighty (basiaa) abides (man-i) in mind. (man basia) abides in the mind – i.e. I experience the Almighty within.

I act in that consciousness doing no evil; as a result – all my (bhai = fears) apprehensions have (binsey = destroyed) vanished and (aatam) the mind experiences (saara) sublime (sukh) comfort/peace. 2.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੇ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੇ ॥   ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੩॥

Kar kirpā apne jan rākẖe.   Janam janam ke kilbikẖ lāthe ||3||

 

The Almighty (kar-i) bestowed (kirpa) kindness and (raakhey) protected/helped (apney = own) IT’s (jan = servants) dutiful seeker. The influence of (kilbikh) transgressions of (janam janam) past births (laathey) have been removed from the mind. 3.

Kahan na jā▫e parabẖ kī vadi▫ā▫ī.   Nānak ḏās saḏā sarnā▫ī. ||4||113||

 

(Vaddiaaee) majesty (ki) of (prabh) the Almighty (na jaaey) cannot (kahan-u) be told. (Daas) the servant/seeker is (sadaa sadaa) forever in (sarnaaee) care and obedience of, i.e. simply obeys the Master, says fifth Nanak. 4. 113.

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the grace/guidance of the true guru

 

ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਬਲੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਾਈ ॥   ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Rām ko bal pūran bẖā▫ī.   Ŧā ṯe baritha na bi▫āpai kā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri(Bal-u) powers (ko) of (raam) the Almighty are (pooran) absolute.

(Ta te) that is why (na kaaee = not any) no (britha) distress (biaapai = happens) befalls the person who places the self in care and obedience of the Almighty. 1.

Jo jo cẖiṯvai ḏās har mā▫ī.   So so karṯā āp karā▫ī. ||1||

 

My mother, (jo jo) whatever (daas-u) dutiful devotee of (har-i) the Almighty (chitvai) thinks of, (karta) the Creator (aap-i) IT-self gets (so so) all that (karaaee) done, i.e. all wishes are fulfilled by conforming to Hukam/Divine commands or laws. 1.

 

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥   ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗਾਈ ॥੨॥੧੧੪॥

Ninḏak kī parabẖ paṯ gavā▫ī.   Nānak har guṇ nirbẖa▫o gā▫ī. ||2||114||

 

(Prabh-i) the Almighty causes (pat-i) honor (gavaaee) to be lost, i.e. suffering is caused to (nindak = slanderer) those who go against Divine commands.

Fifth Nanak (gaaee = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (har-i0 the Almighty and has become (nibhau) fearless. 2. 114.

Sarvan na suraṯ nain sunḏar nahī āraṯ ḏu▫ār rataṯ pingurī▫ā. ||1||

 

My (sravan-i) ears cannot (surat-i) hear, (nain) the eyes are not (sundar) beautiful, I am (pinureeaa) crippled, i.e. have become invalid by not obeying You. I am (aarat) suffering and (rattat) am crying for help at Your (duaar-i) gate, – please lead me to the guru for guidance. 1.

 

ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮੈ ਸਾਜਨ ਮੀਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਹਤਰੀਆ ॥   ਚਰਨ ਕਵਲ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਸੰਤ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੀਆ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੧੫॥

Ḏīnā nāth anāth karuṇā mai sājan mīṯ piṯā mahaṯrī▫ā   Cẖaran kaval hirḏai gėh Nānak bẖai sāgar sanṯpār uṯrī▫ā. ||2||2||115||

 

You are (naath) Master/helper of (deena) the poor and (anaath = master less, orphan) the hapless; (karuna mai) merciful, (saajan) companion, (meet) friend, (pita) father and (mahtareea) mother.

(Sant) the devotees (gah-i = hold, hirdai = in the mind) keep in mind (charan kaval = lotus feet) Divine commands; this way (paar utaria) get across (bhai/bhav saagar) the world ocean – please enable fifth Nanak, the seeker to obey You. 2. 2. 115.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri (Daas = servants) devotees of the Eternal attain (jeevan) life (padvi) status, i.e. do not fall prey to temptations. They are those (milia) by meeting (jin) whom, i.e. in whose company, (aatam) inner-self is (pargaas) the mind is enlightened, i.e. one becomes aware of Naam/Divine virtues and commands. 1

O (praani) mortal, (sun-i) listen to (simran-u) remembrance/singing of Divine virtues by  the devotees, (kaani) with the ears – and emulate them – this way you will (paavah-i) obtain (sukh-u) comfort/acceptance at (har-i) Divine (duaar) abode – and be united with the Creator. 1.

 (Saant-i) peace of mind (bhaee) is experienced when (paaee = put in) granted by obeying (gobid) the Master of the world with guidance of (gur) the guru. This is how (taap = fever) afflictions caused by (paap) wrongdoings (binsey = destroyed) end. 1.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਤ ਰਸਨ ਬਖਾਨ ॥   ਬਿਨਸੇ ਰੋਗ ਭਏ ਕਲਿਆਨ ॥੧॥

Rām nām niṯ rasan bakẖān   Binse rog bẖa▫e kali▫ān ||1||

 

One who (nit) ever (bakhaan) utters/remembers (raam) Divine (naam-u) commands, and obeys them; all his/her (rog) afflictions (binsey) end (bhaey) experiences (kaliaan) happiness. 1.

 

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਣ ਅਗਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥   ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਮਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਸਤਾਰ ॥੨॥

Pārbarahm guṇ agam bīcẖār   Sāḏẖū sangam hai nisṯār ||2||

 

(Paarbrahm) the Supreme Being is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension, but can be understood – vision received – by (beechaar) reflecting on ITs (gun) virtues. One gets (nistaar = across night) across life, i.e. is not reborn (sangha-i) with company/with guidance of (saadhoo) the guru. 2.

 

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥   ਗਈ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਨ ਮੀਤ ॥੩॥

Nirmal guṇ gāvhu niṯ nīṯ   Ga▫ī bi▫āḏẖ ubre jan mīṯ ||3||

 

(Nit neet) forever (gaavah-u = sing) praise and emulate (nirmal) the pristine (gun) Divine virtuesThis is how (jan = servants) devotees of the Almighty (ubrey) overcome (biaadh = afflictions) vices, my (meet) friends. 3.

 

ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਧਿਆਈ ॥   ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੦੨॥੧੭੧॥

Man bacẖ karam parabẖ apnā ḏẖi▫ā▫ī   Nānak ḏās ṯerī sarṇā▫ī ||4||102||171||

 

The devotees (dhiaaee) pay attention to/obey (apna = own) the (prabh-u) the Almighty Master in (man = mind) thought, (bach/bachan) word and (kram) deed. They place themselves in (teyri) your (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience, submits fifth Nanak. 4. 102. 171.

 

 

Note: The fifth Guru’s son, Hargobind had contracted (seetla) small pox. People suggested to Worship, the goddess Seetla but the Guru prayed to the Almighty instead, and he recovered. This Shabad was recited after his recovery and also refers to the (bharam) delusion of goddess worship.

Sīṯlā ṯe rakẖi▫ā bihārī   Pārbarahm parabẖ kirpā ḏẖārī ||1||

 

(Bihari = metaphor for God) the Almighty (raakhiaa) saved – child Hargobind – from (seetla) small pox. (Prabh) the Almighty, (Paarbrahm) the Supreme Spirit (kirpa dhaari) bestowed grace. 1.

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਸੋ ਜੀਵੈ ॥   ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ॥੨॥੧੦੩॥੧੭੨॥

Nānak nām japai so jīvai   Sāḏẖsang har amriṯ pīvai ||2||103||172||

 

Says fifth Nanak: One who (japai) remembers/obeys (naam-u) Divine commands, (so) that person (jeevai) lives, i.e. does not fall prey to afflictions. S/he (peevai) drinks (har-i) the Divine (amrit-u) life-giving elixir, i.e. lives by Divine virtues and commands (sadhsang-i) with company/guidance of the guru. 2. 103. 172.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri (Dhan-u) blessed is (oh) that forehead – which bows to you – and blessed are the (neyt/neytr) eyes (teyrey = your) given by you, o Creator. (dhan-u) blessed are (oey) those (bhagat) devotees (jin) who bear (hryt-u) love (sang-i) for (tum) You. 1.

 

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥   ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਸੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Nām binā kaise sukẖ lahī▫ai   Rasnā rām nām jas kahī▫ai ||1|| rahā▫o

 

One (kaisey = how?) can (laheeai = receive) have (sukh-u) peace and comfort (bina) without conformance to (naam) Divine virtues and commands. We should (kaheeai) say (jas-u) praise of (naam) virtues of (raam) the Almighty. 1.

Ŧin ūpar jā▫ī▫ai kurbāṇ   Nānak jin japi▫ā nirbāṇ ||2||104||173||

 

Says Nanak: We should (jaaeeai) be (kurban-u) sacrifice (oopar-i) on, i.e. do everything to follow example of those (jin-i) who (japiaa) keep in mind/obey (nirbaan-u) the pristine Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 2. 104. 173.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri O Almighty, (too’nhai) You alone are my (maslat-i) advisor, i.e. have given awareness of Naam and (too’nhai) You alone are (naal-i) with me. (Toohai) You alone (raakhah-i) protect and (saar-i samaal-i) take care of those who conform to Naam. 1.

 

ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਨੀ ਸਹਾਈ ॥   ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Aisā rām ḏīn ḏunī sahā▫ī   Ḏās kī paij rakẖai mere bẖā▫ī ||1|| rahā▫o

 

Continuing from the above verse

(Aisa) such is (raam) the Almighty who (sahaae = is helpful) supports both in (deen) the hereafter and (duni = in the world) in life. The Master (rakhai) preserves the honor of (daas = servant) the devotees, (mere) my (bhaaee) brethren. 1.

ਆਗੈ ਆਪਿ ਇਹੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥   ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਉ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੨॥

Āgai āp ih thān vas jā kai   Āṯẖ pahar man har ka▫o jāpai ||2||

 

It is (aap-i = self) the Almighty Master (aagai = ahead) in the hereafter and (ja kai) in whose (vas-i) control is (ih-u) this (thaan-u) (aagai= ahead) in the hereafter (ja kai) in whose (vas) control is (ih thaan = this place) who controls life also. (Mann) my mind (jaapai) remembers and obeys (har-i kau) the Almighty (aath = eight x pahr = three hours) twenty four hours of day and night. 2.

 

ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥   ਜਾ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥

Paṯ parvāṇ sacẖ nīsāṇ   Jā ka▫o āp karahi furmān ||3||

 

(Sach-u) truthfulness is (neesaan-u) the identification for receiving (pat-i)  the honor of (parvaan) acceptance by the Creator for union with IT-self; but only those souls get it (ja kau) for whom the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (karah-i = makes/gives, phurman-u = order) pass approve. 3.

 

ਆਪੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ॥   ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੪॥੧੦੫॥੧੭੪॥

Āpe ḏāṯā āp parṯipāl   Niṯ niṯ Nānak rām nām samāl ||4||105||174||

 

The Eternal is (aapey) IT-self (daata = giver of life) the Creator and (aap-i) IT-self (pratipaal-i) takes care. O Nanak, (nit nit) ever (samaal-i = take care) keep in mind/obey (naam-u) commands of (raam) the Creator. 4. 105. 174.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri When the (poora) perfect (sat guru) true guru (bhaiaa) is (kripaal-u) kind – to guide in understanding Divine virtues and commands – (gupaal = the Sustainer of the universe) the Master (sadaa) ever (vasia) abides in (hirdai) the mind – vision of the Master is received within. 1.

 

ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵਤ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥   ਮਇਆ ਕਰੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Rām ravaṯ saḏ hī sukẖ pā▫i▫ā   Ma▫i▫ā karī pūran har rā▫i▫ā ||1|| rahā▫o

 

One whom (pooran = complete) the all-pervasive (har-i raaia) Sovereign Master (maiaa kari) blesses; that person (ravat) remembers (raam) the Divine virtues and thus (sad hi) ever (paaia = receives) experiences (sukh-u) peace and happiness. 1.

Kaho Nānak jā ke pūre bẖāg   Har har nām asthir sohāg ||2||106||

 

Says Nanak: One whose (bhaag) destiny, based on past good deeds, (poorey) fructifies; that person conforms to (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) commands of the Almighty; such a person is blessed with (asthir-u = stable) eternal (sohaag) good fortune of achieving union with the Creator. 2. 106.

 

 

 

Note. This Shabad highlights exploitation of gullible people by the priestly class. It takes the example of a Brahmin who emphasizes the virtue in giving in charity to him and coerces people to do so. The Shabad points out that real virtue lies in doing good deeds.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri the Brahmin (khol-i = opens) unfolds (dhoti) a sheet his waist and (vichhaaey) spreads (heytth-i = below) spreads to sit on it under him when he sits down to eat – so that it does not constrict his eating. He (laahey = lowers down, peytt-i = belly) gulps the food (vaa’ngoo) like a (gardhab) donkey. 1

 

ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਤੂਤੀ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥   ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bin karṯūṯī mukaṯ na pā▫ī▫ai   Mukaṯ paḏārath nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai ||1|| rahā▫o

 

The Brahmin says charity to a Brahmin leads to (mukt-i) salvation; but Mukti from vices is not (paaeeai) attained without (kartooti = actions) good deeds. Mukti is a (padaarath-u = substance) gift that comes (dhiaaeeai) by paying attention/obeying (naam-u) Divine commands. 1.

ਪੂਜਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਕਰਤ ਇਸਨਾਨਾਂ ॥   ਛੁਰੀ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਨਾ ॥੨॥

Pūjā ṯilak karaṯ isnānāʼn   Cẖẖurī kādẖ levai hath ḏānā ||2||

 

The Brahmin displays his religiosity by (pooja) ritual worship, (tilak) mark on his forehead and (isnaana) ritual baths; but in actual practice (kaadhi = takes out, chhuri = dagger) coerces people and (leyvai) receives (daana) charity on his (hath) hand. 2.

 

ਬੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥   ਜੀਆਂ ਕੁਹਤ ਨ ਸੰਗੈ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੩॥

Beḏ paṛai mukẖ mīṯẖī baṇī   Jī▫āʼn kuhaṯ na sangai parāṇī ||3||

 

He (parrai) reads/recites (beyd-u) scriptural texts (meethi) sweet (baani) voice to impress people, but this (praani) mortal does not (sangey) hesitate to (kuht) slaughtering (praani) people, i.e. coercing to give money or gifts. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੈ ॥   ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੪॥੧੦੭॥

Kaho Nānak jis kirpā ḏẖārai Hirḏā suḏẖ barahm bīcẖārai ||4||107||

 

Says fifth Nanak: (Jis-u) one on whom the Creator (dhaarai) bestows (kirpa) grace, that person (beechaarai) reflects on the virtues of (brahm-u) the Creator with (sudh-u) a clean (hirda) mind – driving out other ideas. 4. 107.

 

 

 

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥  ਥਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥   ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Thir gẖar baishu har jan pi▫āre   Saṯgur ṯumre kāj savāre ||1|| rahā▫o

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri O (piaarey) dear (jan) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty, you will (baisah-u) sit/remain in (thir-u) steady (ghar-i = house) state – focused on the Almighty within; (satigur-i) the true guru (savaarey) accomplishes (tumrey) your (kaaj) purposes, i.e. follow the true guru’s guidance to find the Almighty within. 1.

ਦੁਸਟ ਦੂਤ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥   ਜਨ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੀ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

Ḏusat ḏūṯ parmesar māre   Jan kī paij rakẖī karṯāre ||1||

 

(Parmeysar) the Supreme Master (maarey = kills) destroys (dustt) the evil doers and (doot) messengers of doom, vices; (kartaarey) the Creator (rakhi) preserves (paij) honor (jan ki) of the devotees, i.e. saves them from vices. 1.

 

ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਸਾਹ ਸਭ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥   ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਮਹਾ ਰਸ ਪੀਨੇ ॥੨॥

Bāḏisāh sāh sabẖ vas kar ḏīne   Amriṯ nām mahā ras pīne ||2||

 

The Almighty (kar-i deeney) has made (sabh) all (baadisaah) emperors and (saah) kings subject to (vas-i = control) subject to Naam/Divine commands. Let us (peeney) drink the (maha ras) great elixir of, i.e. keep in mind and conform to (amrit) the life-giving (naam) virtues and commands of the Creator. 2

 

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇ ਭਜਹੁ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥   ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੩॥

Nirbẖa▫o ho▫e bẖajahu bẖagvān   Sāḏẖsangaṯ mil kīno ḏān ||3||

 

(Hoey = be, nirbhau = fearless) forget about god and goddesses or superstitions and (bhajah-u) invoke/obey (bhagvaan) the Creator. (Mil-i) joining (saadhsangat-i = company of the guru) the holy congregation (keeno = makes, daan-u = charity) gives awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands. 3.

 

ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥   ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਪਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੪॥੧੦੮॥

Saraṇ pare parabẖ anṯarjāmī   Nānak ot pakrī parabẖ su▫āmī ||4||108||

 

Says fifth Nanak: I (parey) I have placed myself (saran-i = sanctuary) in the care and obedience of the Creator (antarjaami) within, who directs all my actions. I have (pakri = caught) sought (ott) protection of (prabh) the Almighty (suaami) Master, – please impart awareness of, and ability to conform, to Divine virtues and commands. 4. 108.
