(Ham) I, (keerey, kiram = insect, worm) a lowly person, place myself (sarnaaee) in your care, o (satigur) true guru; please (kar-i daiaa) be kind to (pargaas-i) enlighten my mind with awareness (naam-u) of commands of the Almighty – to have them as guide for my life. 1.

O (meyrey) my (meet) friend and (gurdeyv) enlightener guru, please (pargaas-i) enlighten (mo kau) me with (naam-u) Naam/commands of (ram) the all-pervasive Almighty.
So that Naam (gurmat-i) as taught by the guru, becomes (meyra) my (sakhaai) companion for (praan) life and, (har-i keerat-i) praising the Almighty and living by IT’s virtues and commands becomes (hamri) my (rahraas-i = wealth/resource for living) wherewithal/guide of life. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Those (har-i jan) humble devotees of the Almighty, (jin) who have (sardha) faith in, and (piaas = thirst) yearning to unite with, (har-i har-i) the Almighty, have (vaddeyrey) the greatest of (vaddbhaag) great fortune – because they achieve union with the Creator.
They (triptaasah-i = satisfied) are happy to (milai) to obtain awareness of (naam-u) commands of (har-i) the Almighty; (gun) Divine virtues (pargaas-i = show up) are learnt (mil-i = meeting) by participating (sangat-i) in holy congregation – please enable me to join it. 2.

Jinĥ har har har ras nām na pāiā ṯe bẖāghīṇ jam pās. Jo saṯgur saraṇ sangaṯ nahī āe ḏẖarig jīve ḏẖarig jīvās. ||3||
On the other hand, (jinhah) those who do not (paaia) get (har-i ras-u) the Divine elixir – awareness – of (naam-u) Divine virtues – to guide them in life, (tey) they are (bhaag-heen) bereft of good fortune; they are (paas-i = with) taken by (jam) Divine justice – and sent for reincarnation.
Those (jo) who do not (aaey) come to (saran-i = sanctuary) the care/guidance of (satigur) the true guru and (sangat-i) in the congregation; they (jeevey) live, and (jeevaas-i) shall live, (dhrig-u) accursed. 3.

Those (har-i jan) devotees of the Almighty (jin) who find (sangat-i) the company of (satigur) the true guru, (likhiaas-i = written) good fortune (likhia) is written (mastak-i = on forehead) in their destinies, i.e. it is good fortune to be able to participate in holy congregation.
(Dhann-u dhann-u) blessed is (satsangat-i) the holy congregation by virtue of (jit-u) which, one (paaia = receives) develops (har-i ras-u = Divine taste) love for the Almighty; (mil-i = meeting) by participating in it (naam-u) Divine virtues (pargaas-i) manifest within. 4. 1.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raag Goojri. (Govind-u = master of universe) the Almighty is (preetam-u) my Beloved, I love IT (man-i = in mind) from my heart; listening to IT’s virtues (sabad-i) through the guru’s words (satsangat-i) in holy congregation (mohai) fascinates my (man-u) mind.
We should (jap-i) remember and (dhiaaeeai) focus on – the virtues of – (govind-u) the Almighty; it is (prabh-u) the Almighty (ohai = that) who (dey-i = gives) grants (daan-u = alms) benedictions (kau) to (sabh) all – has provided the wherewithal for all creatures. 1.
Mere bẖāī janā mo kao govinḏ govinḏ govinḏ man mohai. Govinḏ govinḏ govinḏ guṇ gāvā mil gur sāḏẖsangaṯ jan sohai. ||1|| rahāo.
O (meyrey) my (bhaaee janaa) brethren, (govind-u govind-u govind-u = Master of the universe – thrice) the Almighty (mohai) fascinates (mo kau = me) my (man-u) mind and I am conscious of God in thought, word and deed.
I (gaava = sing) praise (gun) virtues of the Master; (jan-u = servant) a seeker/devotee who (mil-i) joins (sadhsangat-i) in holy congregation – to learn and follow Divine commands, (sohai = looks good) is glorified . 1
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.
Sukẖ sāgar har bẖagaṯ hai gurmaṯ kaulā riḏẖ siḏẖ lāgai pag ohai. Jan kao rām nām āḏẖārā har nām japaṯ har nāme sohai. ||2||
(Bhagat-i) devotion to (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. leading life by Divine virtues and commands, (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance, is (saagar = ocean) the source of (sukh) comfort/peace. (Kaula) wealth and (ridh-i sidh-i) occult powers (laagai = touch) fall (pag-i) at the feet of (ohai = that) a devotee, i.e. whereas people run after these, those who live by Divine virtues and can achieve everything on their own.
(Raam naam-u) Divine virtues and commands are (aadhaara = support) the guide (kau) for (jan) the devotee; s/he (japat) remembers (har-i naam-u) the Almighty and (sohai = looks good) is glorified – in Divine court – because of living by (har-i naamai) Divine virtues and commands. 2.

Ḏurmaṯ bẖāghīn maṯ fīke nām sunaṯ āvai man rohai. Kaūā kāg kao amriṯ ras pāīai ṯaripṯai vistā kẖāe mukẖ gohai. ||3||
Those who follow (durmat-i) evil counsel are (bhaag-heen) unfortunate; they have (pheekey = insipid) vague (mat-i) in understanding – the purpose of life; their (man-u) minds (rohai) show anger (sunat = listening) when someone talks of Divine virtues.
They shun virtues and like to indulge in vices; like, we may (paaiai) place a thing of (amrit) sweet (ras-u) taste (kau = to) before (kaooaa kaag) a crow, but it (triptai = satisfied) is happy (khaaey) eating (vista) faeces and (gohai) dung. 3.
Note: The next verse says that a person given to vices can be transformed to one with virtues with the guru’s guidance. For this it uses the common belief that when ਕਊਆ (kaooaa) a crow of black colour – person with its lower instincts as shown above – bathes in a pool of Amrit or nectar, i.e. follows the guru’s teachings, it changes to a white ਹੰਸੁ (hans) a swan – person with virtues.

Amriṯ sar saṯgur saṯivāḏī jiṯ nāṯai kaūā hans hohai. Nānak ḏẖan ḏẖan vade vadbẖāgī jinĥ gurmaṯ nām riḏai mal ḏẖohai. ||4||2||
(Sativaadi) the truthful (satigur-u) the true guru (sar-u) a pool of (amrit) nectar, by (naatai) bathing in which, i.e. by following whose teachings, (kaooaa) a crow – person with lower instincts – (hohai) becomes a (hans) swan – one with virtues.
(Dhan dhann) blessed and (vaddbhaagi) fortunate are those (jinh) who (dhohai) wash (mal-u = filth) vices (ridai) from their minds by living by (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (gurmat-i = guru’s counsel) under the guru’s guidance. 4. 2.
————————————–
Note: In this Shabad the fourth guru describes his deep devotion for the guru and motivates us to do so. It is good fortune to find the true guru and follow him.

O (raam) all-pervasive Almighty, please (meyl-i = cause to meet) lead (mo kau) me to (har-i = almighty) Your (piaarey) beloved (jan) devotee – the guru.
(Meyrey) my (preetam) beloved (gur-u) great (satigur-u) true guru, is (poora) perfect; he is my very (praan) life; (ham) we are (paapi) wrong-doers, but (gur-i) the guru with his guidance, (nistaarey = ferry) take us across the world ocean – by enabling to overcome vices in life. 1.

They (paavah-i) obtain/develop (bhandaarey = stores) deep (bhagat-i) devotion and (har-i ras-u = divine taste) Divine experience living by (amrit-u = Divine nectar) life-giving (har-i har-i) Divine virtues (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance. 2.

On the other hand, (jin) those who do not (paaia = obtain) get to (darsan = sight) find (satigur) the true guru, (sat purakh = true person) the blessed guide, (tey = they) such (bhaagheen) unfortunate people are taken (jam-i) by the metaphoric agent of Divine justice, and (maarey = beaten) punished.
They indulge in vices and are criminals like (maha) big (hatiaarey) murderers; they deserve great punishment and are (maarey) punished (dayy-i) by the Almighty by (pavah-i) being put in (garabh) the womb for birth in (joni) life forms like (kookar) dogs, (sookar) swine and (gardhabh) asses. 3.

Says Nanak the fourth: I (jan) a servant have placed myself (sarnaaee = sanctuary) in the care and obedience of (har-i) the Almighty; IT will (nistaarey) is save when (bhaavai) pleased. 4. 3.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Mai) my (man-i) mind and (tan-i) body (lagi) had (loch) longing (seyti) for the Almighty; and (prabh-i) the Master (poori) fulfilled that (loch) longing by – enabling me to find – and (sarnaaee) be in the care of (satigur) the true guru, i.e. the Almighty is found with the guru’s teachings and the Guru is found with Divine grace. 2.

(Bina) without being aware of (naam) Divine virtues and commands, the mortal (khaavai) eats (ras) sweet and (kas) sour things, i.e. indulges in transitory pleasures.
