ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Har man ṯan vasi▫ā so▫ī.  Jai jai kār kare sabẖ ko▫ī.  Gur pūre kī vadi▫ā▫ī.  Ŧā kī kīmaṯ kahī na jā▫ī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth.  One in whose (man-i) mind and (tan-i) body (soee = That) the Almighty (vasiaa) abides, i.e. who thinks and acts by Divine virtues and commands, (sabh-u koee) everyone (jai jaikaar-u = glorification, karey = does) praises that person.

This is (vaddiaaee) the greatness of (gur poorey = perfect Guru) the Almighty; (ta ki = of that) whose (keemat-i = price) the worth (na jaaee) cannot be (kahee = said) stated, i.e. the Master has infinite powers. 1.

 

ਕੁਰਬਾਨੁ ਜਾਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਵੈ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੋ ਜਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ha▫o kurbān jā▫ī ṯere nāvai.  Jis no bakẖas laihi mere pi▫āre so jas ṯerā gāvai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O Almighty, I (kurbaan-u jaai = am sacrifice to) adore (teyrey) Your (naavai/Naam) virtues/powers.

O (meyrey) my (piaarey) Beloved Master, only (jis no) one on whom you (bakhas-i laih-i) bestow grace, (so) that person (gaavai = sings) praises/emulates (teyra) Your (jas-u = glory) virtues. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਤੂੰ ਭਾਰੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੈ ਛਾਈ ॥੨॥੨੨॥੮੬॥

Ŧūʼn bẖāro su▫āmī merā.  Sanṯāʼn bẖarvāsā ṯerā.  Nānak parabẖ sarṇā▫ī.  Mukẖ ninḏak kai cẖẖā▫ī. ||2||22||86||

 

(Toon’) You are (bhaaro) the great (suaami) Master (meyra = my) of all. (Santaa’n = saints) the seekers have (bharvaasa) confidence (teyra = your) in You, i.e. they only look to You.

Says the fifth Nanak: They place themselves in (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience of You, (prabh) the Almighty – and receive honour.

On the other hand, (nindak) one who slanders the seekers has (chhaaee) dust thrown on his/her (mukh-i) face, i.e. s/he is disgraced by being rejected for union with the Almighty. 2. 22. 86.

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਆਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥ ਪਾਛੇ ਆਨਦੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਤਾ ॥ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਿ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥ ਫਿਰਿ ਡੋਲਤ ਕਤਹੂ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Āgai sukẖ mere mīṯā.  Pācẖẖe ānaḏ parabẖ kīṯā.  Parmesur baṇaṯ baṇā▫ī.  Fir dolaṯ kaṯhū nāhī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. One who sees the Almighty everywhere,  (meyrey) my (meet) friends, experiences  (sukh-u = comfort) happiness (aagai) in front and (prabh-i) the Master (keeta) creates (aanad-u/anand) happiness (peechhey) behind, i.e. one who sees the Almighty with him/her everywhere is ever at peace.

This (banat = occurrence) situation is (banaaee) created (parmeysur-i) by the Supreme Master for the devotee; s/he (katahoo naahi) never (ddolat) wavers – to look elsewhere. 1.

 

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sācẖe sāhib si▫o man māni▫ā.  Har sarab niranṯar jāni▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

One whose (man-u) mind (maania = accepts) is in tune (siau) with (saachey) the Eternal (sahib) Master – i.e. believes in Divine virtues,

s/he (jaania = knows) sees (har-i) the Almighty (nirantar-i = inside without a gap) ever present in (sarab) all places/creatures.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

ਸਭ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਅਪਨੇ ਭਗਤ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੨॥੨੩॥੮੭॥

Sabẖ jī▫a ṯere ḏa▫i▫ālā.  Apne bẖagaṯ karahi parṯipālā.  Acẖraj ṯerī vadi▫ā▫ī.  Niṯ Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī. ||2||23||87||

 

O (daiaala) compassionate Master, (sabh) all (jeea) creatures are (teyrey = your) created by You; and You (karah-i pratipaala = nurture) look after (apney = own) Your (bhagat) devotees – who practice Your virtues and commands.

(Achraj-u) wondrous are (teyri) your (vaaddiaaee = greatness) powers – You know what everyone does. Please bless that I (nit) ever (dhiaaee) pay attention to (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands – to live by them, says the fifth Nanak. 2. 23. 87.

Note: No vices can touch one who emulates virtues, and obeys commands, of Akal Purakh, the Eternal Master. Such a person acts by teachings of the true guru who guides on this way of life. This is the message of the fifth Guru in this Shabad.

 

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਨਾਲਿ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਮੇਰੈ ॥ ਜਮਦੂਤੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨੇਰੈ ॥ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਖੈ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਖੈ ॥੧॥

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Nāl narā▫iṇ merai.  Jamḏūṯ na āvai nerai.  Kanṯẖ lā▫e parabẖ rākẖai.  Saṯgur kī sacẖ sākẖai. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth.  I perceive (naaraain-u) the Almighty (naal-i) with (meyrai) me; (jamdoot-u) the agent of Divine justice cannot (aavai) come (neyrai/neyrrai) near me, i.e. one who has God in mind, is untouched by vices. (Prabh) the Master (kantth-i laaey = in embrace) keeps me close to IT-self; IT (raakhai) protects by – leading to (satigur) the true guru and follow his teaching to obey (sach-u = truth) Naam/Divine commands. 1.

 

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ॥ ਦੁਸਮਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਵਿਡਾਰੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਦੀਤੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur pūrai pūrī kīṯī.  Ḏusman mār vidāre sagle ḏās ka▫o sumaṯ ḏīṯī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Gur-i poorai) the perfect guru (keeti) has made things (poori) perfect.

He (deeti) has given (sumat-i) good sense (kau) to, me (daas) the servant/devotee to (maar-i = killed, viddaarey = thrown away) banish (sagley) all (dusman = enemies) temptations in the world-play.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਥਾਨ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਾਂਦਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਏ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਏ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟਾਏ ॥੨॥੨੪॥੮੮॥

Parabẖ sagle thān vasā▫e.  Sukẖ sāʼnḏ fir ā▫e.  Nānak parabẖ sarṇā▫e.  Jin sagle rog mitā▫e. ||2||24||88||

 

(Prabh-i) the Almighty has caused (sagley) all (thaan) places (vasaaey) to be inhabited, i.e. makes the devotee comfortable everywhere in life, and I have (phir-i aaey) come back from a life of vices and be (sukh-i = comfort, saa’nd-i/saa’nt-i = peace) perfectly well, i.e. remain touched by vices.

Says fifth Nanak: This has happened by placing myself (sarnaaey = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (prabh) the Almighty, (jin-i) who (mittaaey = effaces) obviates (sagley) all (rog = ailments) vices, and enables one to conduct the self as the Almighty approves. 2. 24. 88.

Note: The Shabad below motivates to look only to the Almighty and lead life by Naam or Divine virtues and commands. One should do it with guidance of the true guru.

 

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭੇਟਤ ਹੋਤ ਅਨੰਦਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਗਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਈਐ ॥੧॥

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Sarab sukẖā kā ḏāṯā saṯgur ṯā kī sarnī pā▫ī▫ai.  Ḏarsan bẖetaṯ hoṯ ananḏā ḏūkẖ ga▫i▫ā har gā▫ī▫ai. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. We all seek comforts; (daata = giver) the source of (sarab) all (sukhaa) comforts is (satigur-u = true guru) the true guru’s teachings – Gurbani; we should (paaeeai) place ourselves in (ta ki = of that) the true guru’s (sarni = in sanctuary) care and obedience – to live by Divine virtues and commands.

(Ananda = bliss) peace (hot = happens) is experienced by (bheyttat) seeing (darsan-u = vision) the life of the guru and following his example; (gaaeeai = singing) by praising and emulating virtues of (har-i) the Almighty as guided by the true guru, one shuns vices, and (dookh-u) distress – of continued separation from the Creator – (gaiaa = goes) is obviated. 1.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਾਮੋ ਆਰਾਧਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har ras pīvhu bẖā▫ī.  Nām japahu nāmo ārāḏẖahu gur pūre kī sarnā▫ī. Rahā▫o.

 

O (bhaaee) brethren, (peevhu) drink (har-i) the Divine (ras-u) elixir – live by Naam or Divine virtues.

(Japah-u) remember Naam and (aaraadhah-u) invoke/live by (naamo) Naam, seeking to be (sarnaaee) in the care, i.e. guided by, (gur poorey) the perfect Guru.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋਈ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੨॥੨੫॥੮੯॥

Ŧisėh parāpaṯ jis ḏẖur likẖi▫ā so▫ī pūran bẖā▫ī. Nānak kī benanṯī parabẖ jī nām rahā liv lā▫ī. ||2||25||89||

 

But o (bhaaee) brethren, Naam (praapat-i) is received, i.e. awareness of Divine virtues and commands as guide for life is obtained, (tisah-i = by that) only by one in whose destiny it is so (likhiaa) written (dhur-i = from source) by the Creator, i.e. by motivation from within; (soee) that person (pooran-u = perfect) attains union with the Creator.

This is (beynanti) the supplication of fifth Nanak (pah-i) to (ji) the revered (prabh) Master; may I (rahaa) remain (liv laaee) in concentration (naam-i) on Divine virtues and commands – as guide for life. 2. 25. 89.

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕੀ ਰਾਖੈ ॥ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਹੋਤੁ ਜਗ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੈ ॥੧॥

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Karan karāvan har anṯarjāmī jan apune kī rākẖai.  Jai jai kār hoṯ jag bẖīṯar sabaḏ gurū ras cẖākẖai. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. (Har-i) the Almighty (karan) acts and (antarjaami) knower of minds (karaavan) motivates actions of the creatures; IT (raakhai) saves the honour of (apuney = own) IT’s (jan = servant) obedient servant – by inculcating virtues in them.

The devotee (chaakhai) tastes (ras-u) the elixir of, i.e. follows (sabad-u = word) the teachings of the guru and his/her (jai jai kaar-u) glorification (hot) happens, i.e. is praised (bheetar-i) in (jag) the world – by everybody. 1.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਓਟ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥ ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parabẖ jī ṯerī ot gusā▫ī.  Ŧū samrath saran kā ḏāṯā āṯẖ pahar ṯumĥ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī. Rahā▫o.

 

O (ji) revered (prabh) Almighty, (gusaai) Master of the universe, You are my (ott = protection) protector.

(Too) You are (samrath-u) fit to (daata = giver) keep in (saran-i = sanctuary) Your care; may I (dhiaaee) pay attention to (tumah) You, i.e. Your virtues and commands, (aatth pahar = eight x three hour periods) round the clock – all the time.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਭਜਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਲਗੇ ਭਉ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥

Jo jan bẖajan kare parabẖ ṯerā ṯisai anḏesā nāhī.  Saṯgur cẖaran lage bẖa▫o miti▫ā har gun gā▫e man māhī. ||2||

 

(Jan-u) a person, (jo) who (bhajan-u karey) praises, and emulates, (teyra) Your virtues o (prabh) Almighty – sees You with him/her and thus – has (naahi) no (andeysa) anxiety – being assured of Your protection.

S/he (lagey) attaches to (charan) the feet of, i.e. dutifully obeys, (satigur) the true guru to (gaaey = sing) remember (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (maahi) in (man) the mind; his/her (bhau) fear – of any possible retribution – (mittiaa = effaced) is removed. 2.

 

ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ॥ ਜਿਣਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ਸੋਭਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਆਸਾ ॥੩॥

Sūkẖ sahj ānanḏ gẖanere saṯgur ḏī▫ā ḏilāsā.  Jiṇ gẖar ā▫e sobẖā seṯī pūran ho▫ī āsā. ||3||

 

 By his teachings the (satigur) the true guru – keeps him/her away from wrongdoings, thus (deeaa) gives (dilaasa = consolation) assurance against difficulties, and s/he experiences (ghaneyrey = plenty) abundant (sookh) peace and (sahj) poise.

His/her soul (aaey) comes (ghar-i = home) to the Almighty (jin-i) after conquering vices and is received (seyti) with (sobha = glory) honour; his/her (aasa) wish to unite with the Creator (hoee) is (pooran) fulfilled. 3.

 

ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਲਾਗਿ ਤਰਿਓ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੪॥੨੬॥੯੦॥

Pūrā gur pūrī maṯ jā kī pūran parabẖ ke kāmā.  Gur cẖarnī lāg ṯari▫o bẖav sāgar jap Nānak har har nāmā. ||4||26||90||

 

That (gur-u) guru is (poora) perfect (ja ki) whose (mat-i) counsel is (poori) perfect, with which (kaama) tasks (key = of) given by (prabh) the Master are (pooran) accomplished – union with the Creator attained.

(Laag-i) being attached (charni) to the feet, i.e. dutifully following the teachings of the guru (jap-i) to remember (naama) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty, one (tario = swims across) gets across (bhav = world, saagar-u = ocean) the world-ocean, i.e. overcomes vices – and is not reborn, says the fifth Nanak. 4. 26. 90.

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਭਇਓ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਥਾਟੀ ॥ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਓ ਜਨੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਬੇੜੀ ਕਾਟੀ ॥੧॥

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Bẖa▫i▫o kirpāl ḏīn ḏukẖ bẖanjan āpe sabẖ biḏẖ thātī.  Kẖin mėh rākẖ lī▫o jan apunā gur pūrai beṛī kātī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. The Almighty, (bhanjan-u) destroyer of (dukh) distress of (deen = poor) the hapless, (bhaiao) is (kirpaal) kind to (thaatti) make arrangements in (sabh) every (bidh-i = method) way to assist the devotees (aapey = self) on IT’s own.

IT (raakh-i leeo) saves (apuna = own) IT’s (jan) servant (mah-i) in a (khin) moment – of need arising; (gur poorey = perfect guru) the Almighty (kaattee) cuts his/her (beyrri) fetters – attachment to vices. 1.

 

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਸਦ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Mere man gur govinḏ saḏ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai.  Sagal kales mitėh is ṯan ṯe man cẖinḏi▫ā fal pā▫ī▫ai. Rahā▫o.

 

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, we should (sad) ever (dhiaaeeai) pay attention to – virtues and commands of – the Almighty, (gur) the great (govind-u) Master of universe.

With this, (sagal) all (kaleys) strife (mittah-i = effaced) ends (tey) from (is-u = this) the human (tan) body and (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of what is (chindiaa) wished in (man) the mind, (paaeeai = obtained) is achieved.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਊਚਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਭਏ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥੨॥੨੭॥੯੧॥

Jī▫a janṯ jā ke sabẖ kīne parabẖ ūcẖā agam apārā.  Sāḏẖsang Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā mukẖ ūjal bẖa▫e ḏarbārā. ||2||27||91||

 

(Prabh-u) the Almighty (ja key = whose) who (keeney = made) created (sabh-i) all (jeea jant) creatures, is (apaara) Infinite and (agam) beyond physical reach, but,

One who learns (saadhsang-i) in holy congregation (dhiaaia) to pay attention to/obey (naam-u) commands of the Almighty, (bhaey = is) presents (oojal) an unblemished (mukh) face, (darbaara) in Divine court, i.e. is found without any impediments to being accepted for union with the Creator, says the fifth Nanak. 2. 27. 91.

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਸਾਂਈ ॥ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਦ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ ਹਾਥ ਦੇਇ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਮਹਾ ਰਸ ਚਾਖੇ ॥੧॥
Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Simra▫o apunā sāʼn▫ī.  Ḏinas rain saḏ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī.  Hāth ḏe▫e jin rākẖe.  Har nām mahā ras cẖākẖe. ||1||

(jin-i) who (dey-i = gives, haath = hand) with IT’s grace (raakhey) protects us – from vices; and we (chaakhey) taste (mahaa) the great (ras) elixir of (naam) Divine virtues i.e. experience the Almighty within. 1.

ਅਪਨੇ ਗੁਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੁ ॥ ਭਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਹੋਏ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Apne gur ūpar kurbān.  Bẖa▫e kirpāl pūran parabẖ ḏāṯe jī▫a ho▫e miharvān. Rahā▫o.

 

I am (kurbaan-u) sacrifice (oopar-i) on (apney = own) my guru – with whose teachings,

(pooran) the all-pervasive (daatey = giver) beneficent (prabh) Almighty (bhaey) is (kirpaal) kind, and (jeea) creatures also (hoey) are (miharvaan) kind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ॥ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਾਈ ॥ ਸੁਖੁ ਭੁੰਚਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੨॥੨੮॥੯੨॥
Nānak jan sarnā▫ī.  Jin pūran paij rakẖā▫ī.  Sagle ḏūkẖ mitā▫ī.  Sukẖ bẖuncẖahu mere bẖā▫ī. ||2||28||92||

 

(Jan) humble fifth Nanak places himself (sarnaaee = sanctuary) under the care and obedience of the Almighty, (jin-i) who (rakhaai) preserves (paij) the honour (pooran) fully, i.e. accepts for union.

Then (sagley) all (dookh) distress due to separation from the Master is (mittaaee = effaced) removed; so, follow the guru and (bhunchah-u = eat) enjoy (sukh-u) the bliss, (meyrey) my (bhaaee) brethren.  2. 28. 92.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soatth.  (Sunh-u = listen) this is my (beynanti) submission, o (meyrey) my (tthaakur) Master; (jeea jant) all creatures (dhaarey) exist with Your support; they  are Yours.

O (karan = doer, karaavanhaarey = capable to get done) Omnipotent Master, please protect them and thus (raakh-u) preserve (paij) the honour (ki) of (apuney) Your (naam) name, because they bear Your name as the Master. 1.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਖਸਮਾਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ ਬੁਰੇ ਭਲੇ ਹਮ ਥਾਰੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parabẖ jī▫o kẖasmānā kar pi▫āre.  Bure bẖale ham thāre. Rahā▫o.

 

O (piaarey) beloved Master, (kar-i) act (khasmaana = ownership) as the Master; whether (burey) bad or (bhaley) good, (ham) we are (thaarey) Your servants.

ਸੁਣੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਸਮਰਥ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਪਾਉ ਸੇਵਕ ਜਨ ਮੇਲੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪਹਾਰੇ ॥ ੨॥੨੯॥੯੩॥

Suṇī pukār samrath su▫āmī banḏẖan kāt savāre.  Pahir sirpā▫o sevak jan mele Nānak pargat pahāre. ||2||29||93||

 

When (samrath) the Omnipotent (suaami) Master (suni) listens to (pukaar) the call for help, IT (kaatt-i) cuts (bandhan = bondage) attachment to vices and (savaarey) transforms.

Such a (jan) person/soul then (meyley) meets the Almighty (pahir-i) wearing (sirpaau) the robe of honour, i.e. honourably, and is (pargatt = manifest) respected in (pahaarey = expanse) in the world – by all. 2. 29. 93.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. The Almighty accepts (sabh-i) all (seyvak = servants) obedient devotees (darbaarey = Divine court) in IT’s fold and (kar-i deeney = makes) places (jee jant) other creatures under their (vas-i) control, i.e. everyone follows the devotees.

(Prabh) the Master (apuney = own) of all (utaarey) lands them (paar-i) on the far bank, i.e. takes them across, (bhav nidh-i) the world-ocean, – by overcoming vices, and IT (angeekaar-u keeo) accepts them for union. 1.

 

ਸੰਤਨ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਗਲ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sanṯan ke kāraj sagal savāre.  Ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl kirpāl kirpā niḏẖ pūran kẖasam hamāre. Rahā▫o.

 

(Hamaarey) our (khasam) Master, (nidh-i) the treasure of (kripa) mercy is (kripaal) merciful and (daiaal) kind to (deen = poor) the hapless. It (savaarey = makes favourable) accomplishes (sagal) all (kaaraj = tasks) objectives of (santan = saints) the seekers – of union with IT-self.

ਆਉ ਬੈਠੁ ਆਦਰੁ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਊਨ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਬਾਤਾ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਿਰਪਾਉ ਦੀਓ ਜਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੨॥੩੦॥੯੪॥

Ā▫o baiṯẖ āḏar sabẖ thā▫ī ūn na kaṯahūʼn bāṯā.  Bẖagaṯ sirpā▫o ḏī▫o jan apune parṯāp Nānak parabẖ jāṯā. ||2||30||94||

 

They receive (aadar) respect, (aao =come) welcomed and invited (baitth-u) to sit – accepted for union with the Creator; (katahoo’n baata) nothing (oon) is lacking in them for union.

The Almighty (deeo) gives (sirpaau) the robe of honour of (bhagat-i) devotion to (apuney = own) IT’s (jan) servants; everyone (jaata = knows) acknowledges (prataap-u) greatness of (prabh) the Master, says the fifth Nanak. 2. 30. 94.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. One should (dhiaaey) pay attention to – the teachings of – (apna = own) his/her guru; (mil-i) by finding the guru – and following his teachings the soul (aaey) comes (ghar-i) home, i.e. to the Creator (sio = with, kusal = wellbeing) happily without any problems.

This is (vaddiaaee) the greatness of (naamai) Divine virtues; (tis-u) their (keemat-i = price) value (na jaai) cannot be (kahn-u = said) given. 1.

 

ਸੰਤਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਹੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਿ ਸਭੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਗਲੇ ਸਾਧਹੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sanṯahu har har har ārāḏẖahu.  Har ārāḏẖ sabẖo kicẖẖ pā▫ī▫ai kāraj sagle sāḏẖahu. Rahā▫o.

 

O (santah-u) seekers, (aaraadhah-u) keep in mind (har-i har-i har-i) the Almighty in three ways – in thought, word and deed.

By (aaraadh-i) keeping the Almighty in mind, (sabho kichh-u) everything (paaeeai) is obtained and (sagley) all (kaaraj = work) efforts (saadhahu = made right) are fruitful.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਫਲ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥੧੨॥੭੬॥

Parem bẖagaṯ parabẖ lāgī.  So pā▫e jis vadbẖāgī.  Jan Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.  Ŧin sarab sukẖā fal pā▫i▫ā. ||2||12||76||

 

That is how (preym) loving (bhagat-i) devotion (laagi) develops, but only one (jis-u) who (vaddbhaagi) has good fortune, (so) that person (paaey) gets it.

Says the fifth Nanak: (Jan) the humble seekers (dhiaaiaa) pay attention to (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands; (tin-i) they (paaia) obtain (sarab) all (sukhaa) comforts (phal = fruit) as a consequence, i.e. they obtain the sublime comfort of union with the Almighty. 2. 12. 76.

Note: This Shabad has the popular expression “Dhur Ki Baani aaee” meaning ‘word from the source has come’ in it is often quoted. God is the source of everything; God’s word is the command/direction for the creatures. The Almighty IT-self motivates them to live by it to be at peace.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. When (parmeysar-i) the Supreme Being (ditaa = provides) puts (bamnaa) stop other ideas afflicting the mind; (ddeyra) the abode of (dukh) distress and (rog) maladies is (bhamnaa = broken) destroyed, i.e. the mind is peaceful.

All such (nar = men, naari = women) people (anad/anand karah-i) experience bliss; (har-i har-i) the Almighty (prabh-i) Master (kirpa dhaari) bestows grace on them. 1.

Sanṯahu sukẖ ho▫ā sabẖ thā▫ī.  Pārbarahm pūran parmesar rav rahi▫ā sabẖnī jā▫ī. Rahā▫o.

 

O (santah-u) seekers, (sukh-u) comfort/peace (hoaa = happens) can be experienced at (sabh) all (thaaee) places,

by those who see (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being, (parmeysar-u) the Supreme Master (pooran) present in (rav-i rahiaa) pervading in (sabhni) all (jaaee) places, i.e. Naam/Hukam or Divine commands are applicable under all circumstances.

ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆਈ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਮਿਟਾਈ ॥ ਦਇਆਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਖਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੧੩॥੭੭॥

Ḏẖur kī baṇī ā▫ī.  Ŧin saglī cẖinṯ mitā▫ī.  Ḏa▫i▫āl purakẖ miharvānā.  Har Nānak sācẖ vakẖānā. ||2||13||77||

 

One in whose mind, (baani = words) messages (ki) of (dhur = source) the Almighty (aaee = comes) are received, i.e. those who obey God’s commands, (sagli) all (tin-i) their (chint) anxieties (mittaaee = effaced) end.

(Daiaal) the compassionate (purakh) pervasive Master is (mihrvaana) is kind; the fifth Nanak (vakhaana = utters) remembers and obeys (saach-u = truth) Naam of the Eternal Master. 2. 13. 77.

 

Message: One who understands and obeys Divine commands, present in the conscience, attains poise and peace. S/he does not look to gods/goddesses, has no time for rituals, superstitions and dogmas. This is also the principle of Sabad guru surat dhun cheyla. One leads life by Hukam.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. (Satigur) the true guru the embodiment of (prabh) the Almighty is (daiaala) kind to (deen) the needy; IT (rakhvaala = protector) protects (aithai) here and (othai = there) in the hereafter.

IT (raakhey) protects (aapney = own) IT’s (daas) obedient servants (aap-i = self) on IT’s own, by (sabhaakhey = speaking) conveying (sabad-u = Divine Word) directions (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in all minds. 1.

 

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਊਪਰਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਮਾਲੀ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur ke cẖaraṇ ūpar bal jā▫ī.  Ḏinas rain sās sās samālī pūran sabẖnī thā▫ī. Rahā▫o.

 

I (bal-i jaaee) am sacrifice (oopar-i) on (charan) feet of, i.e. humbly submit to teachings of, the guru, to (saas-i saas-i = with every breath) every moment, (samaal-i = take care of) pay attention to virtues and commands of the Almighty, who is (pooran-u = filling) present in (sabhni) all (thaaee) places.

ਆਪਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋਆ ॥ ਸਚੇ ਦਾ ਸਚਾ ਢੋਆ ॥ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਪਾਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥੧੪॥੭੮॥
Āp sahā▫ī ho▫ā.  Sacẖe ḏā sacẖā dẖo▫ā.  Ŧerī bẖagaṯ vadi▫ā▫ī.  Pā▫ī Nānak parabẖ sarṇā▫ī. ||2||14||78||

 

The Almighty (hoaa) is (sahaai = helpful) gracious (aap-i) on IT’s own – to those who have faith. (Ddhoaa) support (da) of (sachey) the Eternal is (sachaa = true) ever assured for the faithful.

O Almighty, one obtains (vaddiaaee) glory by (bhagat-i) devotion (teyri = your) to You – i.e. practicing Divine virtues and commands; this devotion is (paaee) attained by (sarnaaee) being in the sanctuary of, i.e. – submission to You, o (prabh) Master, says the fifth Nanak. 2. 14. 78.

Note: In this Shabad, the fifth Guru motivates the human to remain conscious of the Almighty in thoughts, words and deeds. This means to lead life by Naam or Divine virtues and commands, and commit no transgressions. It obviates the effect of temptations around us. All wishes of one who does so, are fulfilled, i.e. union with the Almighty is attained.

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Saṯgur pūre bẖāṇā.  Ŧā japi▫ā nām ramāṇā.  Gobinḏ kirpā ḏẖārī.  Parabẖ rākẖī paij hamārī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth: Since I found and follow, bhaana = will) teachings (sat-gur = true guru, poorey = perfect) the true guru, from (ta) then I (japiaa = remember) remember and conform to, (naam-u) commands of (ramaana/raam = all pervasive) the Almighty.

(Gobind) the Master (kirpa dhaari) was kind – to lead to the guru and I follow him; (prabh-i) the Almighty (raakhi) has preserved (hamaari) my (paij) honour – saved me from succumbing to vices. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥ ਜੋ ਇਛਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har ke cẖaran saḏā sukẖ▫ḏā▫ī.  Jo icẖẖėh so▫ī fal pāvahi birthī ās na jā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Being at (charan) the feet, i.e. submission to commands, of (har-i) the Almighty,  is (sadaa) ever (sukh-daaee = comfort-giving) comforting.

With that obedience, (jo) whatever one (ichhah-i) wishes, s/he (paavah-i) gets (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of (soi) that; his/her (aas-i) wishes (na jaai = are not) do not remain (birthi) unfulfilled. 1.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਲੀਣਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

Kirpā kare jis parānpaṯ ḏāṯā so▫ī sanṯ guṇ gāvai.  Parem bẖagaṯ ṯā kā man līṇā pārbarahm man bẖāvai. ||2||

 

(Soee) only that (sant-u = saint) seeker (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of the Almighty, on (jis-u) whom (daata = giver) the beneficent (praanpat-i = master of life) Creator (kripa karey) is kind to lead to the guru.  

(Man-u) the mind (ta ka) of that person (leena) remains absorbed in (preym) loving (bhagat-i = devotion) obedience of the Master; (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being (bhaavai) is pleasing to (man-i) to the mind of such a person. 2.

 

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਜਸੁ ਰਵਣਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਲਾਥੀ ॥ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਲੀਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਕਰਤੈ ਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਭਏ ਸਾਥੀ ॥੩॥

Āṯẖ pahar har kā jas ravṇā bikẖai ṯẖag▫urī lāthī.  Sang milā▫e lī▫ā merai karṯai sanṯ sāḏẖ bẖa▫e sāthī. ||3||

 

The humans are inebriated by (tthagauri = intoxicant used by cheaters) the temptations and succumb to (bikhai) vices; the effect of this intoxicant (laathi) is removed by (ravna = uttering) keeping in mind (jas-u = praise) virtues (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty (aatth pahar = eight x three hour periods) round the clock.

(Kartai) the Creator (meyrai = my) of all (milaaey leeaa) unites (sang-i) with IT-self those who (bhaey) are (saathi) companions of (sant, saadh) the seekers – join holy congregation. 3.

 

ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਸਰਬਸੁ ਦੀਨੇ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੫॥੭੯॥

Kar gėh līne sarbas ḏīne āpėh āp milā▫i▫ā.  Kaho Nānak sarab thok pūran pūrā saṯgur pā▫i▫ā. ||4||15||79||

 

The Almighty (gah-i leeney) holds (kar-u) the hand, (deeney = gives) bestows (sarbas-u) everything and (aapah-i) IT-self (milaaia) unites that soul with (aap-u) IT-self.

(Kah-u) says fifth Nanak, (sarab) every (thok) thing/wish (pooran) is fulfilled, i.e. God is experienced within, when (poora = perfect, satigur-u = true guru) the true guru (paaiaa) is found and followed. 4. 15. 79.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. (Gareebi = poverty) humility is (hamaari) my (gadaa) mace; being (reyn, chhaari) the dust of the feet of (sagal) all, i.e. total humility is my (kha’nnaa/khanddaa) dagger. (Ko na = not any) no (veyikaari) vicious person can (ttikai = be steady) withstand (aagai) in front of, i.e. face, (is) this – humility; (poorai) the perfect guru has (saari) caused me to understand (eyh) this (gal) thing, i.e. imparted this teaching. 1

 

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਓਟਾ ॥ ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਉਧਰਹਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੋਟਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har har nām sanṯan kī otā.  Jo simrai ṯis kī gaṯ hovai uḏẖrahi sagle kotā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Naam-u) virtues of (har-i har-i) the Almighty are (ottaa) the protection (ki) of (santaa) the devotees of the Almighty.

(Jo) one who (simrai = remembers) keeps them in mind, (tis ki = of that) that person (gat-i hovai) is emancipated – from vices; (sagley) all of (kotta = crores/ten million) the multitudes of people – who do that – (udhrey) are saved – by Naam. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਸੰਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ ਇਹੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥ ਸਭੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥੧੬॥੮੦॥

Sanṯ sang jas gā▫i▫ā.  Ih pūran har ḏẖan pā▫i▫ā.  Kaho Nānak āp mitā▫i▫ā.  Sabẖ pārbarahm naḏrī ā▫i▫ā. ||2||16||80||

 

(Gaaia = singing) recounting (jas-u = praise) virtues of the Almighty (sang-i) in the company of (sant) the seekers, i.e. in holy congregation, one (paaiaa) obtains (ihu) this (pooran) inexhaustible (dhan-u) wealth of (har-i) Almighty’ virtues.

(Kahu) says the fifth Nanak: When one (mittaaia) effaces (aap-u = self) ego, then, with this mask removed,

(paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being (nadri aaiaa) is seen (sabh-u) everywhere. 2. 16. 80.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. (Gur-i poorai = perfect Guru) the Almighty (poori keeni) enables to accomplish everything, by (kar-i deeni) bestowing IT’s (bakhas) grace.

One then (nit) ever (paaia = obtains) experiences (anand) bliss and (sukh) peace; the Almighty (vasaaia = causes to dwell) makes (sagley) all (thaav) places (sukhee) at peace, i.e. with Divine grace one is at peace everywhere. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਫਲ ਦਾਤੀ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਜਾਤੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har kī bẖagaṯ fal ḏāṯī.  Gur pūrai kirpā kar ḏīnī virlai kin hī jāṯī. Rahā▫o.

 

(Bhagat-i = devotion) living by virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty is (daati giver, phal = fruit) rewarding.

(Gur-i poorai = perfect Guru) the Almighty (kirpa kar-i) kindly (deeni) gives – motivates, but (kin hi) only some (virley) rare person (jaati = knows) understands, and practices it.

ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵਹ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਓਹ ਸਫਲ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥੧੭॥੮੧॥

Gurbāṇī gāvah bẖā▫ī.  Oh safal saḏā sukẖ▫ḏā▫ī.  Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.  Pūrab likẖi▫ā pā▫i▫ā. ||2||17||81||

 

O (bhaai) brethren, let us (gaavah-i = sing) remember (gurbaani = words of the guru) the guru’s teachings of living by Divine virtues and commands; (oh) that is (sa-phal) fruitful – in finding the Master, and (sukhdaaee) grants peace.

Says the fifth Nanak: One (dhiaaia) pays attention to (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands, (paaiaa) having obtained them by (poorab-i = from past, likhiaa = written) being pre-ordained – based on past deeds. 2. 17. 81.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. One who (araadhey) invokes (gur-u poora = perfect guru) the Almighty, i.e. practices Divine virtues and commands, (sagley) all his/her (kaaraj) jobs are (saadhey) accomplished favorably.

(Sagal) all his/her (manorath) objectives are (poorey) accomplished, i.e. s/he finds the Almighty within; (toorey) trumpets (baajey) play (anhad) incessantly within, i.e. the mind receives Divine words/messages and thus connects with the Master. 1.

 

ਸੰਤਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਅਸਥਾਨਿ ਬਸੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sanṯahu rām japaṯ sukẖ pā▫i▫ā.  Sanṯ asthān base sukẖ sėhje sagle ḏūkẖ mitā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (santah-u) seekers, one (paaia) attains (sukh-u) peace by (japat) keeping in mind (raam) the all-pervasive Master – in thoughts and actions.

One who (basey) dwells at (asthhaan-i) the place of (sant) the seekers, i.e. joins holy congregation, obtains (sukh-u) peace (sahjey) naturally and (sagley) all (dookh) distress (mittaaia = effaced) is obviated. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥੨॥੧੮॥੮੨॥
Gur pūre kī baṇī.  Pārbarahm man bẖāṇī.  Nānak ḏās vakẖāṇī.  Nirmal akath kahāṇī. ||2||18||82||

 

Compliance with (baani = Divine Words) commands of (gur poorey = perfect guru) the Almighty, (bhaani) is liked (man-i) in the mind of (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being.

Says the fifth Nanak: With awareness imparted by the guru, (daas-i) the servant/devotee (vakhaani) utters (nirmal) the pristine (kahaani = story/description) Divine virtues, which are otherwise (akath = cannot be said) beyond description. 2. 18. 82.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. (Bhookhey) a hungry person is not (laaj aavai) ashamed – to eat whenever food is available. (Tio) similarly (jan = servant) a devotee (gaavai) sings (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty all the time. 1.

 

ਅਪਨੇ ਕਾਜ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਅਲਕਾਈਐ ॥ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਖੁ ਊਜਲ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Apne kāj ka▫o ki▫o alkā▫ī▫ai.  Jiṯ simran ḏargėh mukẖ ūjal saḏā saḏā sukẖ pā▫ī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Kio) why should we, i.e. we should not (alkaaeeai = be lazy) be indifferent to (kaaj) the task (apney = own) allotted to us. As humans the task is to practice commands of the Almighty; (simran-i) by remembering (jit-u) which  – we do not commit vices  and – present an (oojal) unblemished (mukh-u) face/record (dargah) in the Divine court, and (paaeeai) obtain (sukh-u) the comfort of union with the Creator and (sadaa sadaa) for ever – escape reincarnation.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜਿਉ ਕਾਮੀ ਕਾਮਿ ਲੁਭਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

Ji▫o kāmī kām lubẖāvai.  Ŧi▫o har ḏās har jas bẖāvai. ||2||

 

(Jio) the way (kaami) a lustful person remains (lubhaavai) engrossed (kaam-i) in satisfying lust; (tio) similarly (jas-u) praising the Almighty (bhaavai) is pleasing to (daas) the dutiful servant of (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

 

ਜਿਉ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਾਲਿ ਲਪਟਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਿਉ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

Ji▫o māṯā bāl laptāvai.  Ŧi▫o gi▫ānī nām kamāvai. ||3||

 

(Jio) the way (maata) the mother (lapttaavai = clings) is attached (baal-i) to the child; (tio) likewise (giaani = learned person) one who is aware of Naam, i.e. Divine virtues and commands, (kamaavai) practices Naam. 3.

 

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥੪॥੧੯॥੮੩॥

Gur pūre ṯe pāvai.  Jan Nānak nām ḏẖi▫āvai. ||4||19||83||

 

One (paavai) receives awareness from (poorey) the perfect Guru, the embodiment of the Almighty, and (dhiaavai) pays attention to (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands, says (jan) the humble fifth Nanak. 4. 19. 83.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. One who practices Naam, i.e. Divine virtues and commands, (aaia) comes home, – gets back to the Almighty (sukh, saa’ndi/shant-i) in peace; on the other hand, (nindak) one who slanders the seeker, has (chhaaia) dust thrown on (mukh-i) on the face – is disgraced/rejected for union with the Creator.

The former is (pahraaia = given to wear) presented the robe of honor, (gur-i poorai = perfect Guru) by the Almighty, i.e. is honorably received by the Almighty for having followed the guru’s teachings; (sabaaiaa) all his/her (dukh) sufferings – of separation from the Creator – (binsaey = destroyed) end. 1.

 

ਸੰਤਹੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਚਰਜ ਸੋਭ ਬਣਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sanṯahu sācẖe kī vadi▫ā▫ī.  Jin acẖraj sobẖ baṇā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (santah-u) seekers this is (vaddiaaee) the greatness of (saachey) the Eternal Master, (jin-i) who (banaaee = makes/arranges) grants such (achraj) wonderful (sobh) glory for IT’s devotees. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਬੋਲੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ॥ ਦਾਸੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥੨॥੨੦॥੮੪॥
Bole sāhib kai bẖāṇai.  Ḏās baṇī barahm vakẖāṇai.  Nānak parabẖ sukẖ▫ḏā▫ī.  Jin pūrī baṇaṯ baṇā▫ī. ||2||20||84||

 

The devotee (bolai) utters what is to (bhaanai) the liking of (sahib) the Master; (daas-u) the obedient servant (vakhaanai) says (baani) words given by (brahm-u) the Creator.

Says the fifth Nanak: (Prabh) the Master is (sukhdaaee = giver of comfort) the source of solace; (jin-i) who (banaaee) makes (banat = happening) things happen (poori) perfectly – for the benefit of the devotees. 2. 20. 84.

Soraṯẖ mėhlā 5.  Parabẖ apunā riḏai ḏẖi▫ā▫e.  Gẖar sahī salāmaṯ ā▫e.  Sanṯokẖ bẖa▫i▫ā sansāre.  Gur pūrai lai ṯāre. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soratth. One who (dhiaaey) pays attention to – virtues and commands of – (prabh-u) the Master (apuna = own) of all, (ridai) in the mind; s/he keeps away from vices in life and (aaey) comes home – back to the Creator (sahi slaamat-i = safe and sound) unblemished by vices.

While (bhaiaa) there is (santokh-u) happiness for him/her (sansaarey) in the world; (gur-i poorai = perfect guru) the Almighty (lai) takes him/her (taarey = ferries) across the world-ocean – to unite with IT-self, and not be reborn. 1.

 

ਸੰਤਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਅਪਨੇ ਭਗਤ ਕੀ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਗਣਈ ਰਾਖੈ ਬਾਲ ਗੁਪਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sanṯahu parabẖ merā saḏā ḏa▫i▫ālā.  Apne bẖagaṯ kī gaṇaṯ na gaṇ▫ī rākẖai bāl gupālā. ||1|| rahā▫o.  

 

O (santah-u) seekers, (prabh-u) the Master (meyra = my) of all is (sadaa) ever (daiaala) kind.

(Gupaala) the Sustainor (raakhai) protects (apney) IT’s (bhagat = devotee) dutiful servant from vices, like (baal) a child and then does not have to (ganaee) count his/her (ganat = count of deeds) faults. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਭੇ ਥੋਕ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੁਸਿ ਦੀਆ ॥ ਫਿਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਥੀਆ ॥੨॥੨੧॥੮੫॥

Har nām riḏai ur ḏẖāre.  Ŧin sabẖe thok savāre.  Gur pūrai ṯus ḏī▫ā.  Fir Nānak ḏūkẖ na thī▫ā. ||2||21||85||

 

One who (dhaarey) keeps (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (ur-i) in (radai) mind, (sabhey) all (tin-i = of that) his/her (thok) things/purposes are (savaarey) accomplished.

This benediction (deeaa) is given (tus-i) at the pleasure of (gur-i poorai = perfect Guru) the Almighty; (phir-i) then (dookh-u = distress) problems are not (theeaa = happen) faced by him/her, says the fifth Nanak. 2. 21. 85.
