SGGS pp 740-742, Soohi M: 5, Shabads 18-27.

 

Note: One needs to be emancipated from vices to have peace in life, and attain union with the Creator to settle down after death. The latter obviates rebirth. These are made possible by conforming to Naam. This Shabad by the fifth Guru emphasizes the need to join holy congregation to learn and follow the guru’s teachings to obtain awareness of Naam, i.e. Divine virtues and commands, and learn to live by them.

 

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਸਨਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Gur kai bacẖan riḏai ḏẖi▫ān ḏẖārī.  Rasnā jāp japa▫o banvārī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. I (dhiaan-u = focus, dhaari = place) reflect (ridai) within (bachan-i = on words) on instructions (kai) of (gur) the guru, and as guided by him, (japau) remember with my (rasna) tongue, and practice (jaap-u = what needs to be remembered) Naam, i.e. virtues and commands, of (banvaari = gardener of all vegetation – metaphor for) the Almighty Sustainor. 1.

 

ਸਫਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Safal mūraṯ ḏarsan balihārī.  Cẖaraṇ kamal man parāṇ aḏẖārī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

I (balihaari = sacrifice) kill my ego and follow the guru’s (darsan = sight) example to submit to Divine commands; the guru is (moorat-i = picture) the embodiment of (saphal) success to experience presence of the Almighty.

Being at God’s (charan kamal) lotus feet, i.e. placing myself in care and obedience of the Almighty, is (adhaar-i) the support/guide for (man) the mind/thoughts and (praan = life) actions. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਕਰਨ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

Sāḏẖsang janam maraṇ nivārī.  Amriṯ kathā suṇ karan aḏẖārī. ||2||

 

One who learns to practice Naam (saddhsang-i = in holy company) in holy congregation; is (nivaaree = keeps away) rid of transgressions and hence, obviates (janam) births and (maran) deaths.

(Suni-i) listening to (amrit) the life-giving (kathaa) discourse of the guru is (adhaaree) the support for the (karan) ears, i.e. is the source of awareness of Naam. 2.

 

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਤਜਾਰੀ ॥ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਸੁਚਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

Kām kroḏẖ lobẖ moh ṯajārī.  Ḏariṛ nām ḏān isnān sucẖārī. ||3||

 

Practice of Naam leads to (tajaaree) giving up/ending (kaam) lust, (krodh) wrath, (lobh) greed and (moh) being enticed by temptations.

This comes with (drirr-u) firm commitment to (naam) Divine virtues and commands rather than by giving (daan-u) charity or (isnaan-u = bath) ritual baths to (suchaaree) cleanse the body. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੧੮॥

Kaho Nānak ih ṯaṯ bīcẖārī.  Rām nām jap pār uṯārī. ||4||12||18||

 

Says fifth Nanak: I have reached (ihu) this (tat-u = essence) conclusion after (beechaari) reflection; (jap-i) remembrance and practice of (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Master (utaari = lands, paar-i = on far shore) takes one across the world-ocean of vices – to union with the Creator, and one is not reborn. 4. 12. 18.

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਗਨ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ॥ ਕਰਣਹਾਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਸਾਧੀ ॥੧॥

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Lobẖ mohi magan aprāḏẖī.  Karanhār kī sev na sāḏẖī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi.  We mortals are (apraadhi) guilty of being (magan) engrossed (lobh-i) in greed and (moh-i) enticement by temptations.

We do not (saadhi = complete) carry out (seyv = service) commands (ki) of (karanhaar) the Creator – on our role in life. 1

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Paṯiṯ pāvan parabẖ nām ṯumāre.  Rākẖ leho mohi nirgunī▫āre. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (prabh) Almighty, (tumaarey) Your (naam) virtues (paavan) purify (patit = fallen) the transgressors.

(Moh-i) I am (nirguneeaarey) a merit-less person, please (raakh-i leyhu) forgive and accept me. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ ਕਾਚੀ ਦੇਹ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥੨॥

Ŧūʼn ḏāṯā parabẖ anṯarjāmī.  Kācẖī ḏeh mānukẖ abẖimānī. ||2||

 

O (prabh) Almighty, (too-n) You (antarjaami = knower of mind) know what anyone needs and (daata = giver) give.

But, (kaachi = unbaked – perishable, deyh = body) the mortal (maanukh) person (abhimaani) is proud – of physical strength or beauty. 2.

 

ਸੁਆਦ ਬਾਦ ਈਰਖ ਮਦ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ ਇਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

Su▫āḏ bāḏ īrakẖ maḏ mā▫i▫ā.  In sang lāg raṯan janam gavā▫i▫ā. ||3||

 

S/he indulges in (suaad = taste) pleasures, (baad) conflicts, (eerakh) jealousy and (mad = intoxication) pride of (maaia) wealth.

(Laag-i) being engrossed (sang-i) with (in) these, s/he (gavaaiaa) wastes (ratan = jewel) the valuable (janam-u) human birth – which is an opportunity to attain union with the Creator. 3.

 

ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਣਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੧੯॥

Ḏukẖ bẖanjan jagjīvan har rā▫i▫ā.  Sagal ṯi▫āg Nānak sarṇā▫i▫ā. ||4||13||19||

 

O (raaiaa = king) Sovereign/highest (har-i) Master, You are (jagjeevan) the life of the creatures and (bhanjan) destroyer of (dukh) distress.

Fifth Nanak has, i.e. the creatures have, plenty of faults but (tiaag-i) leaving (sagal) everyone else they (sarnaaia) come to Your sanctuary – please forgive and save them. 4. 13. 19.

Note: The message from the Shabad below is that human beings remain caught in vices but are not aware of that. Only Divine grace can keep them out of vices and for that they should remain conscious of the Almighty.

 

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਪੇਖਤ ਚਾਖਤ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਅੰਧਾ ਸੁਨੀਅਤ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਕਉ ਜਾਣੈ ਦੂਰੇ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Pekẖaṯ cẖākẖaṯ kahī▫aṯ anḏẖā sunī▫aṯ sunī▫ai nāhī.  Nikat vasaṯ ka▫o jāṇai ḏūre pāpī pāp kamāhī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. An indulgent person (peykhat) sees – vicious entertainment but does not realize its effect on the mind, (chaakhat = tastes) eats harmful food but does not realize its effect on health; such a person (kaheeat) is called (andhaa) blind; s/he (suneeat) ears, but does not (suneeai) hear, i.e. is unaware of the reality.

S/he (jaanai) deems the Almighty who (vasat-u = dwells) is present (nakatt-i = near) with him/her, to be (doorey) far, i.e. thinks the Almighty is not watching and (paapee) the transgressor (kamahee) commits (paap) transgressions. 1.

 

ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

So kicẖẖ kar jiṯ cẖẖutėh parānī.  Har har nām jap amriṯ bānī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (praani) mortal, (kar-i) do (so kichh-u = those things) that by (jit-u) which you (chhuttah-i) are freed of such conduct. For that

(Jap-i) remember and practice (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty guided by (amrit) the life giving (baanee = word) teachings of the guru.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਘੋਰ ਮਹਲ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੈ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੨॥

Gẖor mahal saḏā rang rāṯā.  Sang ṯumĥārai kacẖẖū na jāṯā. ||2||

 

O mortal, you are (sadaa) ever (raata = imbued, rang-i = with love) love (ghor) horses and (mahal) mansions, i.e. wealth, but (kachhoo na) nothing shall (jaata) go (sang-i) with (tumhaarai) you – on death. 2.

 

ਰਖਹਿ ਪੋਚਾਰਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਕਾ ਭਾਂਡਾ ॥ ਅਤਿ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਮ ਡਾਂਡਾ ॥੩॥

Rakẖėh pocẖār mātī kā bẖāʼndā.  Aṯ kucẖīl milai jam dāʼndā. ||3||

 

You (rakhah-i) keep this (bhaandda) vessel of (maati) clay, i.e. perishable body, (pochaar-i) outwardly clean with ceremonial baths, but it is (at-i) very (kucheel) filthy within with vices and you shall (milai) receive (ddaandda) punishment from (jam) Divine justice. 3.

 

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧਾ ॥ ਮਹਾ ਗਰਤ ਮਹਿ ਨਿਘਰਤ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੪॥

Kām kroḏẖ lobẖ mohi bāḏẖā.  Mahā garaṯ mėh nigẖraṯ jāṯā. ||4||

 

You are (baadhaa = tied) possessed by (kaam) lust, (krodh-i) wrath, (lobh-i) greed and (moh-i) enticement by temptations, and are (jaata) going (nighrat) deeper (mah-i) into this (mahaa) great (garat) pit – instead of trying to get out. 4.

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ॥ ਡੂਬਤ ਪਾਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਲੀਜੈ ॥ ੫॥੧੪॥੨੦॥

Nānak kī arḏās suṇījai.  Dūbaṯ pāhan parabẖ mere lījai. ||5||14||20||

 

O Almighty, all this applies to me, and (suneejai = listen) this is my (ardaas-i) supplication, says fifth Nanak:

Please (leejai) take out this (doobat) sinking (paahan = stone) transgressor weighed down by vices. 5. 14. 20.

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰੈ ਬੁਝੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Jīvaṯ marai bujẖai parabẖ so▫e.  Ŧis jan karam parāpaṯ ho▫e. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. One who (marai = dies, jeevat = while alive) sheds ego like a dead person, (bujhai = understands) recognizes (prabh-u) the Master within.

(Tis-u) that person (praapat-i hoey) receives union with the Almighty (karam-i) with Divine grace. 1.

 

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਜਨ ਇਉ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ॥ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਰੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Suṇ sājan i▫o ḏuṯar ṯarī▫ai.  Mil sāḏẖū har nām ucẖrī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Sun-i) listen my (saajan) friends, (io) this is how (dutar-u) the hard-to-cross world-ocean (tareeai = swim across) is crossed, i.e. overcome ego.

(Mil-i) find the guru and with his guidance, (uchareeai = utter) remember and practice (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੨॥

Ėk binā ḏūjā nahī jānai.  Gẖat gẖat anṯar pārbarahm pacẖẖānai. ||2||

 

S/he does not (jaanai = know) acknowledge (dooja = second) any other (binaa) except (eyk) the One Master; and (pachhaana = recognizes) sees (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being (anatar-i) in (ghatt ghatt = all bodies) in everyone/thing. 2.

 

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਭਲ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥੩॥
Jo kicẖẖ karai so▫ī bẖal mānai.  Āḏ anṯ kī kīmaṯ jānai. ||3||

 

And, (jo) whatever the Almighty (karai) does, s/he (maanai) accepts (soee) that as (bhalaa) good for him/her.

S/he (jaanai) realises (keemat-i) the value of keeping in mind the Almighty who is present (aad-i) from beginning to (ant) the end, i.e. who is Eternal. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਹਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੫॥੨੧॥

Kaho Nānak ṯis jan balihārī.  Jā kai hirḏai vasėh murārī. ||4||15||21||

 

(Kahu) say o fifth Nanak: I (balihaari = am sacrifice to) submit to and follow (tis-u) that (jan) person,

(ja kai) in whose (hirdai) mind (muraari = destroyer of the demon Mur – metaphor for) the Almighty (vasah-i = lives) is remembered. 4. 15. 21.

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਉ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Gur parmesar karṇaihār.  Sagal sarisat ka▫o ḏe āḏẖār. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. (Gur-u) the guru is the embodiment of (parameysar-u) the Supreme Master and is (karnaihaar = doer) capable of doing everything.

He (dey) provides (aadhaar-u = support) guidance (kau) to (sagal) all (sristt-i) universe, i.e. to all. 1.

 

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਮਨ ਧਿਆਇ ॥ ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur ke cẖaraṇ kamal man ḏẖi▫ā▫e.  Ḏūkẖ ḏaraḏ is ṯan ṯe jā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

One who (dhiaaey) pays attention to (charan kamal = lotus feet) instructions (key) of (gur) the guru in the mind.

s/he shuns vices; (dookh) distress and (darad-u) pain (jaaey = go) disappear (tey) from (is-u) this (tan) body, i.e. such a person keeps suffering away. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕਾਢੈ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਟੂਟਾ ਗਾਢੈ ॥੨॥
Bẖavjal dūbaṯ saṯgur kādẖai.  Janam janam kā tūtā gādẖai. ||2||

 

(Satigur) the true guru (kaaddhaai) pulls out a person (doobat) drowning (bhavjal-i) in the world-ocean, i.e. enables those fallen to vices to overcome them.

And in this way, the guru (gaaddhai = joins) reunites the soul (ttootta = broken) separated from the Almighty (janam janam) for numerous births. 2.

 

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਮਨਿ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ॥੩॥

Gur kī sevā karahu ḏin rāṯ.  Sūkẖ sahj man āvai sāʼnṯ. ||3||

 

O my mind, (karahu = do, seyva = service) do the bidding of the guru (din-u) day and (raat-i) night, i.e. all the time.

With this, (sookh) well-being, (sahj) poise and (saant-i) peace (aavai) come (man-i) to the mind. 3.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੪॥੧੬॥੨੨॥

Saṯgur kī reṇ vadbẖāgī pāvai.  Nānak gur ka▫o saḏ bal jāvai. ||4||16||22||

 

A (vaddbhaagee) fortunate person (paavai) receives (reyn-u = dust of the feet) guidance of (satigur) the true guru; fifth Nanak is (sad) ever (bal-i jaavai) sacrifice (kau) for the guru, i.e. shall ever humbly do everything the guru bids. 4. 16. 22.

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਈਐ ॥੧॥

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Gur apune ūpar bal jā▫ī▫ai.  Āṯẖ pahar har har jas gā▫ī▫ai. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. One should (bal-i jaaeeai) be sacrifice (oopar-i = on) to, i.e. give up ego and obey, (apuney) one’s guru; and with his guidance, (aatth pahar = eight X three hour periods = twenty-four hours) ever (gaaeeai = sing) praise and emulate (jas-u) glory/virtues of (har-i har-i) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਸਿਮਰਉ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Simra▫o so parabẖ apnā su▫āmī.  Sagal gẖatā kā anṯarjāmī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Let us (saimrau) remember – virtues and commands of (so = that, prabh-u = master) the Almighty who (antarjaami) knows/guides all (ghattaa) minds. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਸਾਚੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥

Cẖaraṇ kamal si▫o lāgī parīṯ. Sācẖī pūran nirmal rīṯ. ||2||

 

One who (laagi) has developed (preet-i) love (sio) for (charan kamal) lotus feet, i.e. sincerely obeys the Almighty; his/her (reet-i = practice) conduct is (saachi) truthful, (pooran) perfect and (nirmal = clean) free of vices. 2.

 

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੩॥

Sanṯ parsāḏ vasai man māhī.  Janam janam ke kilvikẖ jāhī. ||3||

 

One (maahi) in whose (man) mind the Almighty (vasai = abides) is remembered (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of (sant) the guru.

 Influence of (kilvikh) transgressions committed in (janam janam) numerous past births (jaahi = goes) is removed from his/her mind. 3.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਗੈ ਸੰਤ ਰਵਾਲਾ ॥੪॥੧੭॥੨੩॥

Kar kirpā parabẖ ḏīn ḏa▫i▫ālā.  Nānak māgai sanṯ ravālā. ||4||17||23||

 

O (prabh) Almighty, You are (daiaala) kind to (deen = poor) the hapless; please (kar-i kirpa) be kind; fifth Nanak (maagai) begs for (ravaala) dust of the feet of (sant = saints) the seekers, i.e. to follow their example – please enable him to do that. 4. 17. 23.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi.  O (gur) great Almighty, I (jeeva = remain alive) do not succumb to vices (deykh-i) seeing (teyra) Your (darsan) vision, i.e. being aware of and practicing Your virtues and commands; this way (meyra) my (karam-u) work will (hoey) be (pooran) completed, i.e. I would become acceptable for union with the Creator. 1.

 

ਇਹ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਦੇਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਪਣੇ ਚੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ih benanṯī suṇ parabẖ mere.  Ḏėh nām kar apṇe cẖere. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (meyrey) my (prabh) Master, (ih) this (sun-i = listen) is my (beynanti) supplication to You; please (deyh-i) impart (naam-u) awareness of Your virtues and commands (kar-i) make me (apney = own) Your (cheyrey = disciple) devotee – to live in Divine obedience. 1.

ਅਪਣੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਰਾਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤੇ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਜਾਤੇ ॥੨॥

Apṇī saraṇ rākẖ parabẖ ḏāṯe.  Gur parsāḏ kinai virlai jāṯe. ||2||

 

O (daatey = giver) beneficent (prabh) Master, please (raakh-u) keep me in (apnee) Your (saran-I = sanctuary) care.

(Kinai) some (virley) rare person (jaaey) knows Your commands (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru – make me one who does. 2.

 

ਸੁਨਹੁ ਬਿਨਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਵਸਹਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਚੀਤਾ ॥੩॥

Sunhu bin▫o parabẖ mere mīṯā.  Cẖaraṇ kamal vasėh merai cẖīṯā. ||3||

 

(Sunhu = listen) this is my (binau) supplication, o (meyrey) my (meeta) friend and (prabh) Master; may Your (charan kamal = lotus feet) commands (vasah-i) abide in (meyrai) my (cheeta) mind – to obey. 3.

 

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਰੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ ਵਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਣਤਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੧੮॥੨੪॥

Nānak ek karai arḏās.  visar nāhī pūran guṇṯās. ||4||18||24||

 

Fifth Nanak (karai) makes this (eyk) one (ardaas-i) supplication to You;

You are (pooran = perfect) profound in (gun) virtues; please do not (visar-u) let me forget You – so that I may emulate Your virtues. 4. 18. 24.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. Like (meet-u, saajan-u) a friend, (sut) son, (badhap) relative and (bhaaee) brother; (jat kat) wherever I (peykhau) look for help, I find (har-i) the Almighty (sang-i) with me (sahaaee) to help. 1. 

 

ਜਤਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਤਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਿਸਰਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Jaṯ merī paṯ merī ḏẖan har nām.  Sūkẖ sahj ānanḏ bisrām. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Living by (naam-u) Divine virtues, commands is (meyree) my high (jat) caste/status, (pat-i) honour and (dhan-u) wealth – in which people take pride.

Naam gives (sookh) comfort, (sahj) poise, (aanand) happiness and (bisraam = rest) peace of mind. 1

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਸਨਾਹ ॥ ਕੋਟਿ ਆਵਧ ਤਿਸੁ ਬੇਧਤ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

Pārbarahm jap pahir sanāh.  Kot āvaḏẖ ṯis beḏẖaṯ nāhi. ||2||

 

(Jap-i) keeping in mind and obeying (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being is like (pahar-i) wearing (sanaah) armour; which (kott-i = crores/ten million) any number of (aavadh) weaponry cannot (beydhat) pierce, i.e. no vices can afflict. 2.

 

ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਣ ਗੜ ਕੋਟ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਜਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨ ਬਿਦਾਰੈ ॥੩॥

Har cẖaran saraṇ gaṛ kot hamārai.  Kāl kantak jam ṯis na biḏārai. ||3||

 

(Hamaarai) for me, being in (saran = sanctuary) care and (charan) feet/ obedience of (har-i) the Almighty, is like protection of (garr, kott) a fort against attacks.

(Kantak-u = thorn) the merciless (kaal-u, jam-u) Divine justice does not (bidaarai) destroy (tis-u) that fort, i.e. vices are kept at bay by one who obeysthe Almighty. 3.

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੰਤ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੯॥੨੫॥

Nānak ḏās saḏā balihārī.  Sevak sanṯ rājā rām murārī. ||4||19||25||

 

Says (daas = servant) humble fifth Nanak. I (sadaa) ever (balihaaree = am sacrifice to) adore (sevak) devotees and (sant) seekers of (raaja = king) the Sovereign (raam) all-pervasive Master, (muraari) the destroyer of evil,. 4. 19. 25.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi.  Let us (nit) ever (gaaha = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (prabh) the Almighty (gopaal) Sustainor of the world.

(Anad/anand) happiness, (binod) merry-making, (mangal) songs of joy – of finding the Master – and (sukh) peace of mind are experienced (taaha = there) this way. 1.

 

ਚਲੁ ਸਖੀਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਵਣ ਜਾਹਾ ॥ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਪਾਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Cẖal sakẖī▫e parabẖ rāvaṇ jāhā.  Sāḏẖ janā kī cẖarṇī pāhā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (sakhee-ey = girlfriends) soul-women, (chal-u) come let us (jaaha) go (raavan) to enjoy company of (prabh-u) the Master; and for that let us (paaha) fall (charni) at feet (ki) of (saadh janaa) the saints, i.e. follow the example of the seekers of the Almighty. 1.

ਕਰਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਨ ਧੂਰਿ ਬਾਛਾਹਾ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਲਾਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
Kar benṯī jan ḏẖūr bācẖẖāhā.  Janam janam ke kilvikẖ lāhāʼn. ||2||

 

(Kar-i) make (beyntee) supplication (baachaaha) seeking (dhhoor-i) dust of feet, i.e. follow the example, of (jan) the seekers.

And by following them, (laahaa’n) remove influence of (kilvikh) transgressions of (janam janam) numerous past births. 2.

 

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਜੀਉ ਅਰਪਾਹਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਟਾਹਾਂ ॥੩॥

Man ṯan parāṇ jī▫o arpāhā.  Har simar simar mān moh katāhāʼn. ||3||

 

Let us (arpaaha = make offering) dedicate our (man-u = mind) thoughts, (tan-u = body) actions (praan) life and (jeeo) soul to the Almighty.

We should (kattaahaa’n = cutting) give up (maan-u) pride and (moh-u) attachment to the world-play, and (simar-i simar-i) ever remember and obey (har-i) the Almighty. 3.

 

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਕਰਹੁ ਉਤਸਾਹਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ॥੪॥੨੦॥੨੬॥

Ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl karahu uṯsāhā.  Nānak ḏās har saraṇ samāhā. ||4||20||26||

 

O Almighty, You are (daiaal) kind to (deen) the hapless; please (karah-u = make) give me (utsaaha) the zeal/ability; such that (daas = servant) humble fifth Nanak (samaaha) remains (saran-i) in care, i.e. lives by virtues and commands, of (har-i) the Almighty. 4. 20. 26.

Note: Everyone wishes to go to heaven. According to the guru-given awareness, heaven is not a region or place. Any place where one praises and learns to emulate Divine virtues, and thus obtains peace, is heaven, says the fifth Guru in this Shabad. This happens by remaining unattached to the world-play and giving up chasing desires.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Baikunṯẖ nagar jahā sanṯ vāsā.  Parabẖ cẖaraṇ kamal riḏ māhi nivāsā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. (Baikuntth nagar-u = Vishnu’s town/abode – metaphor for) heaven is (jahaa) where (sant) the saints (vaasa) dwell, i.e. in holy congregation and,

(Charan kamal = lotus feet) virtues and commands of (prabh) the Almighty (nivaasa = abode) are remembered (maah-i) in (rid) mind of everyone in the congregation, and learnt to practice. 1.

 

ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਤੁਝੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦਿਖਲਾਵਉ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿੰਜਨ ਤੁਝੁ ਭੋਗ ਭੁੰਚਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Suṇ man ṯan ṯujẖ sukẖ ḏikẖlāva▫o.  Har anik binjan ṯujẖ bẖog bẖuncẖāva▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Sun-i) listen o seekers, (dikhlaavau) let me show (tujh-u) you what (sukh-u) comfort of (man) mind and (tan) body is,

And give (tujh-u) you (bhog) the pleasure of (anik) various (binjan) foods to (bhunchaavau = consume) enjoy, i.e. impart awareness of virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty – the guide for life. 1.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੁੰਚੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਅਚਰਜ ਸਾਦ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਬਰਨੇ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੨॥

Amriṯ nām bẖuncẖ man māhī.  Acẖraj sāḏ ṯā ke barne na jāhī. ||2||

 

(Bhunch-u = consume) enjoy/experience (amrit) the life-giving elixir of (naam-u) Divine commands (maahi) in (man) the mind.

(Acharj) the wonderful (saad) taste/experience (ta key) of that (na jaahi) cannot (barney) be described – it can only be experienced. 2.

 

ਲੋਭੁ ਮੂਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝਿ ਥਾਕੀ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਜਨ ਤਾਕੀ ॥੩॥

Lobẖ mū▫ā ṯarisnā bujẖ thākī.  Pārbarahm kī saraṇ jan ṯākī. ||3||

 

(Lobh-u) greed (mooaa = dies) disappears, the fire of (trisna) craving (thaaki = gets tired) dims and (bujh-i) quenched, i.e. running after desires stops, of (jan) the person who (taakee = sees) seeks to be (saran-i = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being. 3.

 

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਭੈ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੨੧॥੨੭॥

Janam janam ke bẖai moh nivāre.  Nānak ḏās parabẖ kirpā ḏẖāre. ||4||21||27||

 

Says fifth Nanak: (Prabh) the Almighty (kirpa dhaarey) is kind to (daas = servant) the devotees to comply with Naam/Divine commands. This (nivaarey) ends (bhai) fears/apprehension for wrongdoings caused by (moh = enticement) influence of vices of (janam janam) birth after birth, and accepts them for union. 4. 21. 27.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi, (ghar-u 3) to be sung to the third beat.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the tru3 guru’s grace/guidance:

 

Note: The Shabad below first gives examples of those who pretend to be good and expect to be treated like those who sincerely work. This is realized later by one with supplication to the Almighty to free him/her from vices. The Shabad finally describes one who is blessed with vision of the Master.

 

ਸੇਵਾ ਥੋਰੀ ਮਾਗਨੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ॥ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕਹਤੋ ਪਹੁਤਾ ॥੧॥

Sevā thorī māgan bahuṯā.  Mahal na pāvai kahṯo pahuṯā. ||1||

 

It is the nature of some to do (thori) little (seyva= service) work but (maagan-u) demand (bahuta) plenty as compensation.

They do nothing to (paavai = obtain) find (mahal-u) the Almighty but (kahto) say they have (pahuta) reached there – such is the pretense. 1.

 

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਮਾਨੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਰੀਸਾ ॥ ਕੂੜੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਕੀ ਹਾਠੀਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Jo pari▫a māne ṯin kī rīsā.  Kūṛe mūrakẖ kī hāṯẖīsā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

They (reesa) pretend to be like (tin) those (jo) who (maaney) obey (pri-a = beloved) the Almighty.

Such is (haattheesa = stubbornness) persistent pretense of (moorakh) a foolish (koorrey = false) pretender. 1.

ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਹਤੋ ਮਹਲੀ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥

Bẖekẖ ḏikẖāvai sacẖ na kamāvai.  Kahṯo mahlī nikat na āvai. ||2||

 

(Dikhaavai = shows) s/he exhibits (bheykh = garb) piety but does not (kamaavai) practice (sach-u = truth) what s/he shows to be.

Such a person (kahto) says s/he has reached (mahli) the Almighty but does not (aavai) come near, i.e. is not acceptable to the Almighty. 2.

 

ਅਤੀਤੁ ਸਦਾਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੩॥

Aṯīṯ saḏā▫e mā▫i▫ā kā māṯā.  Man nahī parīṯ kahai mukẖ rāṯā. ||3||

 

S/he is (maata = intoxicated) possessed by temptations in (maaiaa) the world-play but (sadaa-e) wants to be called (ateet = detached) a renunciate.

S/he has no (preet-i) love for the Almighty but (kahai) says (mukh-i) from the mouth, i.e. proclaims that s/he is (raata) imbued with Divine love. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਨਉ ਸੁਨੀਜੈ ॥ ਕੁਚਲੁ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਕਾਮੀ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੪॥

Kaho Nānak parabẖ bin▫o sunījai.  Kucẖal kaṯẖor kāmī mukaṯ kījai. ||4||

 

(Kahu) says fifth Nanak: (Suneejai = listen) this is my (binau) supplication, o Almighty.

Please (mukat-u keejai) deliver this (kuchal-u = filthy) vicious, (katthor-u) cruel and (kami) lustful creature. 4. 

 

ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਖੇ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੭॥

Ḏarsan ḏekẖe kī vadi▫ā▫ī.  Ŧumĥ sukẖ▫ḏāṯe purakẖ subẖā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o ḏūjā. ||1||7||

 

That is (vaddiaaee) the virtue/reward of (deykhey = seeing) obtaining Your (darsan) vision – please grant me Your vision

O (purakh) all-pervasive Master, (tumh) You are (subhaaee) by nature (sukhdaatey = giver of comfort) the giver of succor. 1. 7.

Note: This Shabad has two parts. The first shows engrossment of the human being in transitory pleasures and the second shows the path of Gurmat – the guru’s teachings. Each sub-part ends with a Rahaau, i.e. to pause and reflect. The types of engrossments are also brought out. These result in one forgetting the practices which aid in achieving purpose of human birth to attain union with the Almighty. Awareness of the purpose of life comes by participating in holy congregation and is achieved by giving up ego, says the fifth Guru.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Bure kām ka▫o ūṯẖ kẖalo▫i▫ā.  Nām kī belā pai pai so▫i▫ā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi: The human being (ootth-i  khalooiaa = gets up) is ever ready (kaam = act)  to commit (burey = bad) evil (kaam) deeds; but (pai pai) keeps lying down (soiaa) asleep, i.e. is indifferent/keeps putting off, (beyla = time) when it comes to living by  (naam) Divine virtues and commands. 1.

 

ਅਉਸਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਨ ਇਆਨਾ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਰੰਗਿ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

A▫osar apnā būjẖai na i▫ānā.  Mā▫i▫ā moh rang laptānā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Iaana = child/immature) the mindless person does not (bujhai) realize that (apna = own?) his/her human birth is (ausar-u) the opportunity – to unite with the Creator.

Instead, s/he (lapttaana = clings) remains engrossed in (rang-i) in love of, and (moh) attachment to, (maaiaa) the world-play – attachment to relations, wealth, rivalry and objects of pleasures. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਕਉ ਬਿਗਸਿ ਫੂਲਿ ਬੈਠਾ ॥ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੨॥

Lobẖ lahar ka▫o bigas fūl baiṯẖā.  Sāḏẖ janā kā ḏaras na dīṯẖā. ||2||

 

S/he is (phool-i baittha = puffed up) ever zealous and (bigas-i) happy (kau) with (lahar-i = waves) thoughts of (lobh = greed) material gains.

But does not care (deettha = see, daras-u = sight) to be in company of (sadh janaa) seekers of the Almighty. 2.

 

ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਸਮਝੈ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਲਪਟਿਓ ਜੰਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kabhū na samjẖai agi▫ān gavārā.  Bahur bahur lapti▫o janjārā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Agiaan-u) the ignorant and (gavaara) silly person (kabahoo na) never (samjhai) realizes – what s/he is doing; and

(lapttio) clings to (janjaara/janjaala = entanglements) pursuits of material gains and pleasures (bahur-i bahur-i) again and again. 1.

ਬਿਖੈ ਨਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਸੁਣਿ ਭੀਨਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਆਲਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਕੀਨਾ ॥੩॥
Bikẖai nāḏ karan suṇ bẖīnā.  Har jas sunaṯ ālas man kīnā. ||3||

 

S/he (bheena = rinsed/imbued) relishes (sun-i) listening to (naad) music which leads to (bikhai) vices,

but his/her (man-i) mind (aalas keena = is lazy) ignores (sunat) listening to (jas-u = praise) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty – and emulating them. 3.

 

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਰੇ ਪੇਖਤ ਅੰਧੇ ॥ ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਭਿ ਧੰਧੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏarisat nāhī re pekẖaṯ anḏẖe.  Cẖẖod jāhi jẖūṯẖe sabẖ ḏẖanḏẖe. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Re) o mortal, you are (andhey = blind) blinded by attachments to the world-play; do you have (naahi) no (drist-i) sight to see – that

People (jaah-i) depart from the world (chhodd-i) leaving behind (sabh-i) all objects of (dhandhey) of entanglement; they are (jhootthey = false) not truly yours and will be left behind on death. 1.

(Raahau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
Kaho Nānak parabẖ bakẖas karījai.  Kar kirpā mohi sāḏẖsang ḏījai. ||4||

 

(Kahu) says fifth Nanak: O (prabh) Master, please (kareejai) bestow Your (bakhas) grace; (kari kirpa) kindly (deejai = give) enable me to join (saadhsang-u) holy congregation – where Your virtues are praised and learnt to emulate by which I may be freed of these attachments. 4.

Ŧa▫o kicẖẖ pā▫ī▫ai ja▫o ho▫ī▫ai renā.  Jisahi bujẖā▫e ṯis nām lainā. ||1|| rahā▫o. ||2||8||

 

(Kichh-u = something) Divine grace is (paaeeai) is received (tau) only then (jau) when (hoeeai = be, reyna = dust of feet) one is humble.

One (jisah-i) whom the Almighty (bujhaaey) gives the understanding, (tis-u) that person (laina = takes) obtains awareness of (naam-u) Divine commands – and lives by them.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Gẖar mėh ṯẖākur naḏar na āvai.  Gal mėh pāhaṇ lai latkāvai. ||1||

 

Composition of the fith Guru in Raag Soohi. The pretender does not (nadir-i aavai) see (tthakur-u) the Master (mah-i = in, ghar = house) within, but (lai lattkaavai) hangs (paahan-u) a stone (mah-i = on) round (gal) the neck – for display, and calls it Tthaakur. 1.

 

ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥ ਨੀਰੁ ਬਿਰੋਲੈ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮਰਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bẖarme bẖūlā sākaṯ firṯā.  Nīr birolai kẖap kẖap marṯā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Saakat = worshipper of Shakti) one who forgets the Almighty (phirta) wanders (bhoola) being led astray (bharmey) by delusion – that the Almighty is outside somewhere.

 

S/he (marta = dies) spends life (khap-i khap-i) miserably, (birolai) churning (neer-u) water – expecting to get butter, i.e. wants to find the Almighty but engages in fruitless rituals. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਹਣ ਕਉ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਕਹਤਾ ॥ ਓਹੁ ਪਾਹਣੁ ਲੈ ਉਸ ਕਉ ਡੁਬਤਾ ॥੨॥

Jis pāhaṇ ka▫o ṯẖākur kahṯā.  Oh pāhaṇ lai us ka▫o dubṯā. ||2||

 

(Paahun) the stone which s/he (kahta) calls (tthaakur-u) the deity; (oh) that (paahan-u) stone (lai) takes (us kau) him/her with it and (ddubta) sinks, i.e. idol worship cannot lead to emancipation. 2.

 

ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰ ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ॥ ਪਾਹਣ ਨਾਵ ਨ ਪਾਰਗਿਰਾਮੀ ॥੩॥

Gunahgār lūṇ harāmī.  Pāhaṇ nāv na pārgiramī. ||3||

 

(Gunahgaar) the sinner (loon haraami = untrue to salt – slang for – betrayer of benefactor) does not acknowledge the beneficent Master, and worships stones.

S/he does not realize that it is not possible to (paargraami) get across – the world ocean – in (naav) a boat of (paahan) stone, i.e. such pursuits cannot take him/her to the Almighty. 3.

 

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੯॥
Gur mil Nānak ṯẖākur jāṯā.  Jal thal mahī▫al pūran biḏẖāṯā. ||4||3||9||

 

(Tthaakur-u) the Master (jaata) is recognized within (mil-i) on meeting and receiving guidance from the guru, says the fifth Nanak.

(Bidhaata = master of destiny) the Almighty (pooran) pervades (jal-i) in water, (thal-i) in/on land and (maheeal-i) in space – and we can find it wherever we are. 4. 3. 9.

Note: This Shabad describes a friend asking another who is recipient of Divine love as to how s/he achieved that. The latter replies that anyone who gives up pride, and humbly obeys Divine commands, finds the Master. The Shabad takes the example of a happy wife who is loved by her husband, as metaphor.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. (Ri) o blessed woman, by (kavan) which (gat-i = state) way have you (raaviaa = consummated) received love of (laalan-u) the beloved?

O my (sakhi) friend, please (bataavhu = tell/give, mati = counsel) advise (mujhah-i) me. 1.

 

ਸੂਹਬ ਸੂਹਬ ਸੂਹਵੀ ॥ ਅਪਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sūhab sūhab sūhvī.  Apne parīṯam kai rang raṯī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

You (soohab soohab = are dyed in red color) have the aura of a loved one and you (soohvi) love the spouse.

You (rati) are imbued (rang-i) with love (kai) of (apney = own) your (preetam) beloved husband. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਪਾਵ ਮਲੋਵਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਨੈਨ ਭਤੀਰੀ ॥ ਜਹਾ ਪਠਾਵਹੁ ਜਾਂਉ ਤਤੀ ਰੀ ॥੨॥

Pāv malova▫o sang nain bẖaṯīrī.  Jahā paṯẖāvhu jāʼn▫o ṯaṯī rī. ||2||

 

I shall (malovau) rub your (paav) feet (sang-i) with (nain) eye-(bhateeri) lashes, i.e. my forehead – shall pay obeisance to you, and

(jahaa) wherever you (patthaavhu) send, I shall (jaa’nau) go (tati) there, i.e. I shall do your bidding. 2.

 

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਦੇਉ ਜਤੀ ਰੀ ॥ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਿਲਾਵਹੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਪਤੀ ਰੀ ॥੩॥

Jap ṯap sanjam ḏe▫o jaṯī rī.  Ik nimakẖ milāvhu mohi parānpaṯī rī. ||3||

 

I shall (deyo = give) leave the rituals of (jap) recitation of mantras, (tap) austerities, (sanjam) control of senses and (jati) celibacy – and do what you say.

Just (milaavhu) lead (moh-i) me to meet (praanpati = master of life) the Almighty for (ik) one (nimakh) moment. 3.

 

ਮਾਣੁ ਤਾਣੁ ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਹਤੀ ਰੀ ॥ ਸਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਹਾਗਵਤੀ ਰੀ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੦॥

Māṇ ṯāṇ ahaʼn▫buḏẖ haṯī rī.  Sā Nānak sohāgvaṯī rī. ||4||4||10||

 

The seeker responds: One who (hati = kills) leaves his/her sense of (maan-u) pride, (taan-u) strength and (ahangbudh-i) ego, (sa) that soul is (sohaagvati) fortunate to receive love of the Master, says fifth Nanak. 4. 4. 10.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O Almighty, (too’n) You are the very (jeevan-u) life of the creatures as well their (adhaara = support) mainstay (praan) for life.

(Peykh-i peykh-i) seeing (hi) only (tujh) you, the beneficent Master, my (man-u) mind (saadhaara) is comforted. 1.

 

ਤੂੰ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ ਚਿਤਹਿ ਨ ਬਿਸਰਹਿ ਕਾਹੂ ਬੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ŧūʼn sājan ṯūʼn parīṯam merā.  Cẖiṯėh na bisrahi kāhū berā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Too-n) You are (m-era) my (saajan-u) friend and (preetam-u) beloved; please do not let me (bisrah-i) forget You (chitah-i) from my heart (kaahoo bera) at any time. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਬੈ ਖਰੀਦੁ ਹਉ ਦਾਸਰੋ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ ਤੂੰ ਭਾਰੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੇਰਾ ॥੨॥

Bai kẖarīḏ ha▫o ḏāsro ṯerā.  Ŧūʼn bẖāro ṯẖākur guṇī gaherā. ||2||

 

(Hau) I am (t-era) Your (daasro) servant (bai khreed-u) by outright purchase, i.e. I am Your slave.

And You are my (bhaaro) the great (tthaakur-u) Master who is (gah-era) profound (guni) in virtues. 2.

 

ਕੋਟਿ ਦਾਸ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥ ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੩॥

Kot ḏās jā kai ḏarbāre.  Nimakẖ nimakẖ vasai ṯinĥ nāle. ||3||

 

You are the great Master (ja kai) under whose (darbaarey = court) authority are (kott-i = crore/ten million) millions of (daas = servants) subjects and You (vasai) live (naal-e) with (tinh) them, i.e. You are the all-pervasive Master of all creation. 3.

 

ਹਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥੪॥੫॥ ੧੧॥

Ha▫o kicẖẖ nāhī sabẖ kicẖẖ ṯerā.  Oṯ poṯ Nānak sang baserā. ||4||5||11||

 

(Hau) I have (kichh-u naahi = noting) no status; (sabh-u kichh-u) everything is (t-era = yours) given by You.

You (baseyra = dwelling) are present in the creation like (ot-i) warp and (pot-i) weft yarns in a woven fabric, says Nanak the fifth. 4. 5. 11.

Note: The Almighty dwells within the mind and is experienced there. IT also dwells in Sadhsangat or holy congregation where IT’s virtues and commands are recounted and praised. The Shabad below describes such an experience. This is Sach Khandd as described in Paurri 37 of Japji.

 

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸੂਖ ਮਹਲ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਊਚ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਵਾਸਹਿ ਭਗਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Sūkẖ mahal jā ke ūcẖ ḏu▫āre.  Ŧā mėh vāsėh bẖagaṯ pi▫āre. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. The Almighty, (ja key) whose (duaarey = doors) abode is (ooch) high and (mahal) mansions are full of (sookh) peace/comfort, i.e. presence of the Almighty in mind raises one to an exalted state and provides comfort.

(Piaar-e) the loving (bhagat) devotees (vaasah-i) dwell (mah-i) in (ta) that state, i.e. the Almighty is present in congregation of the seekers.

 

ਸਹਜ ਕਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਅਤਿ ਮੀਠੀ ॥ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਕਾਹੂ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਹੁ ਡੀਠੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sahj kathā parabẖ kī aṯ mīṯẖī.  virlai kāhū neṯarahu dīṯẖī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

The devotees (kathaa = description) praising virtues and actions of (prabh) the Almighty find it (at-i) highly (meetthee = sweet) lovable and find (sahj) poise.

But (kaahoo) some (virley) rare person (ddeetthh) sees (neytrhu) with the eyes, i.e. experiences it. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਤਹ ਗੀਤ ਨਾਦ ਅਖਾਰੇ ਸੰਗਾ ॥ ਊਹਾ ਸੰਤ ਕਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥੨॥

Ŧah gīṯ nāḏ akẖāre sangā.  Ūhā sanṯ karahi har rangā. ||2||

 

(Tah) there, i.e. in that state one enjoys nature like seeing (akhaarey = arena) a play (sanga) with (naad) music and (geet) songs.

(Oohaa) there (sant) the seekers (karah-i = do) perform (rangaa) play of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. this is where everything is done in obedience to the Almighty. 2.

 

ਤਹ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਨ ਹਰਖਾ ॥ ਸਾਚ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵਰਖਾ ॥੩॥

Ŧah maraṇ na jīvaṇ sog na harkẖā.  Sācẖ nām kī amriṯ varkẖā. ||3||

 

(Tah = there) in that state there are no (maran—u) deaths and (jeevan-u = life) births, no (sog) sorrow or (harkha) happiness, i.e. there is one state of undisturbed tranquility.

There – in holy congregation – (varkhaa = rain) songs and discourses on (naam) virtues and commands of (saach) the Eternal Master are heard. 3.

 

ਗੁਹਜ ਕਥਾ ਇਹ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੨॥

Guhaj kathā ih gur ṯe jāṇī.  Nānak bolai har har baṇī. ||4||6||12||

 

I (jaani = known) received awareness of (ih) this (guhj = hidden, kathaa = story) mystery (tey) from (gur) the guru; after that fifth Nanak (bolai = says) speaks and lives by (baani = words) commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty. 4. 6. 12.

Note: The Sikh Ardaas or supplication asks for company of those on meeting whom the Almighty is remembered. This Shabad describes such people.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Jā kai ḏaras pāp kot uṯāre.  Bẖetaṯ sang ih bẖavjal ṯāre. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O Almighty, please enable me to meet those (ja kai) in whose (daras-i = sight, meeting) company (kott-i = crores/ten million) all types of (paap) transgressions are (utaarey = removed) given up; and whose (bheyttat = on meeting) company (taarey = ferries) takes one across (ih-u) this (bhavjal-u) world-ocean – and is not reborn. 1.

 

ਓਇ ਸਾਜਨ ਓਇ ਮੀਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ ਜੋ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

O▫e sājan o▫e mīṯ pi▫āre.  Jo ham ka▫o har nām cẖiṯāre. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Oey) those (saajan) companions and (meet) friends are (piaarey) dear to me (jo) who cause me (chitaarey) to keep in mind (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

Jā kā sabaḏ sunaṯ sukẖ sāre.  Jā kī tahal jamḏūṯ biḏāre. ||2||

 

And (sunat) on listening to (ja ka) whose (sabad-u = word) counsel –vices are given up and – (saarey) all (sukh) comforts are obtained.

And by (ja ki) whose (ttahal = service) obedience (jamdoot) the agent of Divine court is (bidaarey) kept away. 2.

 

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਧੀਰਕ ਇਸੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਧਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਣਿ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲਾਰੇ ॥੩॥

Jā kī ḏẖīrak is manėh saḏẖāre.  Jā kai simraṇ mukẖ ujlāre. ||3||

 

One (dheerak) consolation (ja ki) by whom (sadhaarey = gives support) comforts (is-u) this (manah-i) mind.

(simran-i) by remembrance – and practice, of (ja kai) whose guidance, (mukh) face is found (ujlaarey) clean, i.e. no faults can be found. 3.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਸਰਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੩॥

Parabẖ ke sevak parabẖ āp savāre.  Saraṇ Nānak ṯinĥ saḏ balihāre. ||4||7||13||

 

(Seyvak = servants) devotees of (prabh) the Master are (savaarey) suitably transformed by the Master (aap-i) IT-self.

We should be (saran-i = in care) guided by (tinh) them; I (sad) ever (balihaarey = am sacrifice) adore them, says fifth Nanak. 4. 7. 13.

Note: In the Shabad below the fifth Guru points out that everyone who is born dies. But the humans get attached to persons and things which will be left behind on death. Finally, the Guru prays to be enabled to live by Naam or Divine virtues and commands.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Rahaṇ na pāvahi sur nar ḏevā.  Ūṯẖ siḏẖāre kar mun jan sevā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. (Sur-i nar) god-like men and (deyva) gods do not (paavah-i) get to (rahan = stay) live forever.

Everyone including (mun-i jan) sages (kar-i = do, seyva = service) play their roles and (ootth-i) get up, i.e. complete their life-spans, and (sidhaarey) leave. 1.

 

ਜੀਵਤ ਪੇਖੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Jīvaṯ pekẖe jinĥī har har ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.  Sāḏẖsang ṯinĥī ḏarsan pā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Those (jinhi) who (dhiaaiaa) pay attention to virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty (peykhey) are seen (jeevat) living – not succumbing to vices.

By joining (saadhsang-i) holy congregation – where the Almighty is praised, (tinhi) they (paaiaa) obtain (darsan-u) vision of the Master – become aware of Divine virtues and commands. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਸਾਹ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਮਰਨਾ ॥ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲਹਿ ਖਰਨਾ ॥੨॥

Bāḏisāh sāh vāpārī marnā.  Jo ḏīsai so kālėh kẖarnā. ||2||

 

(Baadsaah) the kings, (saah) rich people and (vaapaari) businesspersons all (marna) die; (jo) whosoever (deesai = is seen) is born, (so) that (kharna) is taken away (kaalah-i) by death. 2.

 

ਕੂੜੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਲਪਟਿ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੩॥

Kūrhai mohi lapat laptānā.  Cẖẖod cẖali▫ā ṯā fir pacẖẖuṯānā. ||3||

 

But the mortal (lapatt-i) clings and (lapttaana) remains entangled (moh-i) due to attachment to (koorrai = false) perishable persons/objects.

But when s/he has to (chhodd-i) leave them and (chaliaa) departs, (ta phir-i) then s/he (pachhutaana) repents – for having been attached to them in preference to remembering the Almighty. 3.

 

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਪੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੪॥

Kirpā niḏẖān Nānak ka▫o karahu ḏāṯ.  Nām ṯerā japī ḏin rāṯ. ||4||8||14||

 

O Almighty (nidhaan) treasure of (kripa) mercy, please (karhu) give this (data-i) benediction to fifth Nanak, i.e. the creatures, that they (japi) remember (teyra) Your (naam-u) virtues and commands (din-u) day and (raat-i) night, i.e. be conscious of Naam at every step. 4. 8. 14.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.   Gẖat gẖat anṯar ṯumėh basāre.  Sagal samagrī sūṯ ṯumāre. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O Almighty, (tumah-i) You (basaarey = dwell) are present (aantar-i) in (ghatt ghatt) everybody/mind.

(Sagal) all (samagri) things are under (tumaarey) Your control like beads of a rosary are controlled (soot-i) by the string. 1.

 

ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਗਸਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Ŧūʼn parīṯam ṯūʼn parān aḏẖāre.  Ŧum hī pekẖ pekẖ man bigsāre. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Too’n) You are the (preetam) beloved and (adhaarey) support for (praan) life of all.

(Peykh-i peykh-i) seeing You, i.e. Your nature, (man) the mind (bigsaarey) blossoms. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਅਬ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

Anik jon bẖaram bẖaram bẖaram hāre.  Ot gahī ab sāḏẖ sangāre. ||2||

 

I (bhram-i bhram-i) wandered in (anik) numerous (jon-i) life forms but (bhram-i) being deluded – did not obey Your commands and – (haarey) failed to unite with You.

(Ab) now in human birth, I (gahi = held) have taken (sangaar-e) company and (ott) protection of (saadh) the guru, i.e. joined holy congregation. 2.

 

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਾਰੇ ॥੩॥੯॥੧੫॥

Agam agocẖar alakẖ apāre.  Nānak simrai ḏin raināre. ||3||9||15||

 

O Almighty, You are (agam) beyond comprehension, (agochar-u) not perceived by the senses, (alakh) indescribable and (apaarey) Infinite.

Fifth Nanak cannot see You but (simrai) remembers Your virtues and commands, (din-u) day and (rainaar-e) night – as guide. 3. 9. 15.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Kavan kāj mā▫i▫ā vadi▫ā▫ī.  Jā ka▫o binsaṯ bār na kā▫ī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. (Kavan = what? kaaj = purpose) it does not help (vaddiaai) to glorify someone for (maaiaa) wealth, (ja kau) whose (binsat) destruction takes (na kaai = not any) no (baar) time, i.e. may be lost anytime but is certainly lost immediately on death. 1.

 

ਇਹੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਸੋਵਤ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ ਅਚੇਤ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਮਹਿ ਲਪਟਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ih supnā sovaṯ nahī jānai.  Acẖeṯ bivasthā mėh laptānai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Ihu = this) possession of wealth is like (supna) a dream, but one who is (sovat = asleep) inebriated by attachment to it does not (jaanai = know) realize, i.e. like a dream is realized on waking up, this state is realized when life ends.

S/he (laptaanai) clings to it (mah-i = in, acheyt = unconscious state) in a thoughtless (bivastha) state. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਪੇਖਤ ਪੇਖਤ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

Mahā mohi mohi▫o gāvārā.  Pekẖaṯ pekẖaṯ ūṯẖ siḏẖārā. ||2||

 

(Gaavaara = foolish) the ignorant mortal (mohio) is fascinated by (mahaa) the great (moh-i) attachment to the world-play.

And (ootth-i = gets up, sidhaara = departs) leaves it behind (peykhat peykhat) watching it. 2.

 

ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥ ਕਈ ਜੰਤ ਬਿਨਾਹਿ ਉਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

Ūcẖ ṯe ūcẖ ṯā kā ḏarbārā.  Ka▫ī janṯ bināhi upārā. ||3||

 

(Ta ka = of that) the Almighty’s (darbaara = court) authority is (ooch) higher (tey) than (oochaa) the highest destination.

(Kaee) many (jant) creatures (binaah-i) perish without getting there while some (upaara = rise) get across the world-ocean and reach the Almighty. 3.

 

ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੧੬॥

Ḏūsar ho▫ā nā ko ho▫ī.  Jap Nānak parabẖ eko so▫ī. ||4||10||16||

 

There is not (doosar = second) another nor (hoi) shall be like IT.

(Jap-i) remember and practice virtues and commands of (soee = that) the (eyko) One (prabh) Master, says fifth Nanak. 4. 10. 16.

Sūhī mėhlā 5.  Simar simar ṯā ka▫o ha▫o jīvā.  Cẖaraṇ kamal ṯere ḏẖo▫e ḏẖo▫e pīvā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. I (jeeva) live, i.e. do not fall prey to vices, (siamar-i simar-i) by ever keeping in mind (ta kau = that) virtues and commands of the Almighty.

O Almighty, (hau) I (dhoey dhoey) ever wash (teyrey) Your (charan kamal) lotus feet and (peeva) drink, i.e. I clean my mind by remembrance and practice of Your virtues and commands. 1.

 

ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

So har merā anṯarjāmī.  Bẖagaṯ janā kai sang su▫āmī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(So) that (har-i) Almighty Master (meyra) of mine (antarjaami) knows my mind.

(Suaami) the Master is ever (sang-i) with (bhagat janaa) the devotees – guiding and watching them. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਾ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੨॥

Suṇ suṇ amriṯ nām ḏẖi▫āvā.  Āṯẖ pahar ṯere guṇ gāvā. ||2||

 

I (sun-i sun-i) ever listen to and (dhiaava) keep in mind, (amrit) the life giving (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands.

I (gaava = sing) praise (teyrey) Your (gun) virtues (aatth = eight x pahar = three-hours) round the clock, o Almighty. 2.

 

ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਲੀਲਾ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦਾ ॥ ਗੁਣ ਅਪਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੩॥

Pekẖ pekẖ līlā man ānanḏā.  Guṇ apār parabẖ parmānanḏā. ||3||

 

(Peykh-i peykh-i) seeing Your (leela) play in nature I experience (aananda) bliss (man-i) in the mind.

O (prabh) Master, Your (gun) virtues are (apaar) infinite; You are (paramannda) the embodiment of Supreme bliss. 3.

 

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਭਉ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੧੭॥

Jā kai simran kacẖẖ bẖa▫o na bi▫āpai.  Saḏā saḏā Nānak har jāpai. ||4||11||17||

 

You are the highest authority (simran-i = remembrance) by obedience to (ja kai) whose commands, (bhau) fear of anyone else does not (biaapai) afflict.

Nanak the fifth (sadaa sadaa) for ever (jaapai) remembers and practices virtues and commands of that (har-i) Almighty Master. 4. 11. 17.
