SGGS pp 767-769, Soohi M: 3, Chhants 1-3

 

ਰਾਗੁ ਸੂਹੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਘਰੁ ੨   ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Rāg sūhī cẖẖanṯ mėhlā 3 gẖar 2  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Soohi, (chhant) song of love for the Almighty, (ghar-u 2) to be sung to the second beat.     Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.

 

Note: The message from this Shabad is that those who practice Naam i.e. emulate Divine virtues and obey Divine commands, they find the Almighty within, i.e. are at peace. That translates into leading life as we should, with no pretensions. This understanding comes with the guru’s teachings.

 

ਸੁਖ ਸੋਹਿਲੜਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥

Suk sohilā har ḏẖi▫āvahu.  Gurmuk har fal pāvhu. 

 

(Sohilrraa = happy song) the blessed songs of praising virtues of (har-i) the Almighty bring (sukh) peace; (dhiaavh-u) keep in mind those virtues and emulate.

Do it (gurmukh-i) under guidance of the guru and you will (paavh-u) obtain (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of wish to find (har-i) the Almighty.

 

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਅਪਣੇ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਭਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥

Gurmukẖ fal pāvhu har nām ḏẖi▫āvahu janam janam ke ḏūkẖ nivāre.  Balihārī gur apṇe vitahu jin kāraj sabẖ savāre.

 

(Dhiaavh-u) pay attention to (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance and receive (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of wish to unite with the Almighty; it (nivaarey) removes influence of (dookh) faults (key = of) committed in (janam janam) numerous past births and in this life.

We should (balihaari = be sacrifice, vittah-u = to) give up ego and – do the bidding of – (apney) our guru (jin) who (savaarey = sets right/accomplishes) helps achieve (sabh) all (kaaraj = purpose) objectives – here and in the hereafter.

 

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖ ਸੋਹਿਲੜਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ॥੧॥

Har parabẖ kirpā kare har jāpahu sukẖ fal har jan pāvhu.  Nānak kahai suṇhu jan bẖā▫ī sukẖ sohilṛā har ḏẖi▫āvahu. ||1||

 

(Jaapah-u) remember and obey (har-i) the Almighty; (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master will (kripa karey) be kind and you will (paavh-u) obtain (sukh) peace as (phal) reward, o (har-i jan) seekers of the Almighty.

(Kahai) says third Nanak: (Sunh-u) listen o (jan = servants) seekers, my (bhaaee) brethren, (sohilrraa = happy song) the blessed songs praising virtues of (har-i) the Almighty bring (sukh) peace; (dhiaavh-u) keep in mind those virtues, and emulate. 1.

 

ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਭੀਨੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥

Suṇ har guṇ bẖīne sahj subẖā▫e.  Gurmaṯ sėhje nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e.

 

One who (sun-i) listens to (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty is (sahj-i subhaaey) instinctively (bheeney = rinsed) imbued with Divine love  

S/he (sahjey) steadfastly (dhiaaey) pays attention to/lives by (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (gurmat-i) with the guru’s counsel/guidance

 

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥

Jin ka▫o ḏẖur likẖi▫ā ṯin gur mili▫ā ṯin janam maraṇ bẖa▫o bẖāgā.

 

(Jin kau) those for whom it is so (likhiaa = written) ordained (dhur-i = from source) by the Creator, (tin) they (miliaa) find the guru – they shun vices with his guidance and their – (bhau) fear of (janam = birth, maran = death) remaining in cycles of births and deaths (bhaaga = runs away) is obviated.

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਖੋਈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

Anḏrahu ḏurmaṯ ḏūjī kẖo▫ī so jan har liv lāgā.

 

One who follows the guru’s counsel, (khoee = loses) gives up (durmat-i) evil thinking of (dooji) other ideas (andrah-u) from within; (so) that (jan-u) seeker (laaga) remains (liv) focused on (har-i) the Almighty.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਮੇਰੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਨ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਭੀਨੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੨॥
Jin ka▫o kirpā kīnī merai su▫āmī ṯin an▫ḏin har guṇ gā▫e.  Suṇ man bẖīne sahj subẖā▫e. ||2||

 

(Jin kau) those to whom (suaami) the Master (meyrai = mine) of all (kripa keeni) is kind, i.e. motivates from within, (tin) they (andin-u = daily) ever (gaaey = sing) praise (gun) virtues of the Almighty – and emulate them.

One who (sun-i) listens to (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty is (sahj-i subhaaey) naturally (bheeney = rinsed) imbued with Divine love and lives naturally in obedience to the Creator. 2.

 

ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

Jug mėh rām nām nisṯārā.  Gur ṯe upjai sabaḏ vīcẖārā.

 

(Nistaara) emancipation from the rebirth comes (mah-i) in (jug = age) human birth by compliance with (naam-u) commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Master.

This (veechaara) understanding (upjai) comes (tey) from (sabadu = word) the teachings of the guru.

 

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

Gur sabaḏ vīcẖārā rām nām pi▫ārā jis kirpā kare so pā▫e.  Sėhje guṇ gāvai ḏin rāṯī kilvikẖ sabẖ gavā▫e.

 

One who (veechaara) reflects on (sabad-u = word) the guru’s teachings, finds practice of (raam naam) Divine virtues and commands (piaara = dear) loveable; (s-u) that person to (jis) whom the Almighty (kirpa karey) is kind, gets this understanding.

S/he (din = day, raati = night) ever (sahjey) steadfastly (gaavai = sings) remembers and emulates (gun) Divine virtues and (gavaaey = loses) gives up (sabh-i) all (kilvikh) transgressions, i.e. acts by the guru’s counsel and not self-will.

 

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

Sabẖ ko ṯerā ṯū sabẖnā kā ha▫o ṯerā ṯū hamārā.  Jug mėh rām nām nisṯārā. ||3||

 

O Almighty (sabh ko) everyone (teyra = your) belongs to You and (too) You are the Master (ka) of (sabhna) all – You belong to them; (hau) I am (teyra) Your servant and You are (hamaara) my Master.

(Nistaara) emancipation from the rebirth comes (mah-i) in (jug = age) human birth by practice of (naam-u) virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Master. 3.

 

ਸਾਜਨ ਆਇ ਵੁਠੇ ਘਰ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਅਘਾਹੀ ॥

Sājan ā▫e vuṯẖe gẖar māhī.  Har guṇ gāvahi ṯaripaṯ agẖāhī.

 

The Almighty (saajan) friend (aaey) comes and (vutthey) dwells (maahi) in (ghar = house) mind – when other thoughts leave. 

Then one (tripat-i aghaahi = satiated) finds happiness in (gaavah-i = sing) praising (gun) virtues of the Almighty – and emulating them.

 

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਏ ॥ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਪੂਜ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥

Har guṇ gā▫e saḏā ṯaripṯāsī fir bẖūkẖ na lāgai ā▫e.  Ḏah ḏis pūj hovai har jan kī jo har har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e.

 

Those who (gaaey) praise and emulate (har-i gun) Divine virtues are (sadaa) ever (triptaasi) satisfied; (bhookh = hunger) craving does not (aaey) come to (laagai) touch them (phir-i) again.

(Jan) a seeker of (har-i) the Almighty, (jo) who (dhiaaey) pays attention to (har-i = dispels evil) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty, (pooj = worship, hovai = is done) is worshipped/respected (dah = ten, dis-i = directions) everywhere – here and in the hereafter.

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ਸਾਜਨ ਆਇ ਵੁਠੇ ਘਰ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੪॥੧॥

Nānak har āpe joṛ vicẖẖoṛe har bin ko ḏūjā nāhī.  Sājan ā▫e vuṯẖe gẖar māhī. ||4||1||

 

Says third Nanak: (Har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self decides to (jorr-i) unite or (vichhorrey) separate from IT-Self – based on the creatures’ deeds; there is (ko naai) none (dooja) other – with the this capability.

The Almighty (saajan) friend (aaey) comes and (vutthey) dwells (maahi) in (ghar = house) mind – when other thoughts leave.  4. 1.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ਰਾਗੁ ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਘਰੁ ੩ ॥

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.  Rāg sūhī mėhlā 3 gẖar 3.

 

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Soohi, (chhant) song of love for the Almighty, (ghar-u 3) to be sung to the fourth beat. 

 

Note: Peace of mind when alive, and acceptance by the Almighty for union on death, are achieved only when one gives up ego – stops acting by self-will- and follows the guru. And the guru teaches to live by Naam/virtues and commands of the Almighty, says the third guru in this Chhant – song of love for the Creator.

 

ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਖੈ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਰਖਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਸੋ ਭਗਤੁ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

Bẖagaṯ janā kī har jī▫o rākẖai jug jug rakẖ▫ḏā ā▫i▫ā rām.  So bẖagaṯ jo gurmukẖ hovai ha▫umai sabaḏ jalā▫i▫ā rām.

 

(Jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (raakhai) preserves the honour of (bhagat janaa) the devotees; IT (rakhda aaiaa) has preserved it (jug-i jug-i = through the ages) all the time.

And (bhagat-u) a devotee (hovai) is (so = that) one (jo) who (jalaaiaa = burns) kills (haumai) ego – stops acting by self-will – and (gurmukh-i) follows the guru (sabad-i = with word) to live by Divine commands.

 

ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥

Ha▫umai sabaḏ jalā▫i▫ā mere har bẖā▫i▫ā jis ḏī sācẖī baṇī.  Sacẖī bẖagaṯ karahi ḏin rāṯī gurmukẖ ākẖ vakẖāṇī.

 

(Haumai) ego (jalaaiaa) is destroyed (sabad-i) by following the guru’s teachings; s/he is one (jis di) whose (baani) words are (sachi) truthful, i.e. who practices what s/he professes; s/he (bhaaiaa) is liked by (har-i) the Almighty Master (meyrey = my) of all.

S/he (sachi = true) truly (bhagat-i = devotion, karah-i = practices) lives by the guru’s teachings (din-u) day and (raati) night, and (aakh-i vakhaani) says (gurmukh-i) what the guru teaches.

 

ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਚਾਲ ਸਚੀ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Bẖagṯā kī cẖāl sacẖī aṯ nirmal nām sacẖā man bẖā▫i▫ā.  Nānak bẖagaṯ sohėh ḏar sācẖai jinī sacẖo sacẖ kamā▫i▫ā. ||1||

 

(Chaal = gait) conduct (ki) of (bhagtaa) the devotees is (sachi) truthful and (at-i) totally (nirmal = clean) free from evil; (naam-u) virtues and commands of (sachaa) the Eternal are (bhaaiaa) pleasing (man-i) to their minds.

Those (bhagat) devotees (sohah-i = are seen as good) receive glory (dar-i) in the court (saachai) of the Eternal (jini) who (kamaaiaa = carry out) live (sacho) by truth, and only (sach-u) truth. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਭਗਤ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਣ ਅਵਗਣ ਪਛਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

Har bẖagṯā kī jāṯ paṯ hai bẖagaṯ har kai nām samāṇe rām.  Har bẖagaṯ karahi vicẖahu āp gavāvėh jin guṇ avgaṇ pacẖẖāṇe rām.

 

Being (bhagtaa ki = of devotees) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty is (jaat-i = caste) the status and (pat-i/paat) lineage of the devotees; (bhagat) the devotees (samaaney) conform (naam-i) to virtues and commands (kai) of (har-i) the Almighty.

They (gavaavah-i = lose) banish (aap-u = self) ego (vichah-u) from within and (bhagat-i = devotion, karah-i = practice) conform to virtues and commands of the Almighty; they are those (jin) who (pachhaaney = recognize) distinguish between (gun) virtues and (avgan) vices – to lead their lives.

 

ਗੁਣ ਅਉਗਣ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਭੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥

Guṇ a▫ugaṇ pacẖẖāṇai har nām vakẖāṇai bẖai bẖagaṯ mīṯẖī lāgī.  An▫ḏin bẖagaṯ karahi ḏin rāṯī gẖar hī mėh bairāgī.

 

A devotee (pachaanai) distinguishes between (gun) virtues and (augan) vices, and (vakhaanai = utter) remembers Naam of the Almighty; to him/her (bhai = fear) respectful (bhagat-i) obedience to the Almighty (laagi) seems (meetthi) sweet, i.e. s/he loves being a devotee.

S/he (andin-u = every day) ever (bhagat karah-i = practices devotion) conforms to Divine virtues and commands (din-u) day and (raati) night; and is (bairaagi = withdrawn) detached while being (mah-i) in (ghar-i = house) family (hi) itself.

 

ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੇ ॥੨॥

Bẖagṯī rāṯe saḏā man nirmal har jī▫o vekẖėh saḏā nāle.  Nānak se bẖagaṯ har kai ḏar sācẖe an▫ḏin nām samĥāle. ||2||

 

Those who are (raatey) imbued with (bhagti = devotion) dedication to God, their (man-u) minds are (nirmal-u = clean) free of evil and they (sadaa) ever (veykhah-i) see (jeeo) the revered (har-i) almighty (naaley) with them.

(Sey) those (bhagat) devotees (andin-u = daily) ever (samhaaley) keep in mind/pay attention to (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands and are recognized (saachey) truthful/sincere (dar-i) in the court of (saachai) the Eternal. 2.

 

Note: It was conveyed above that a Bhagat or devotee is one who is a Gurmukh, i.e. who follows the guru. Some people practice rituals or superstitions and call it devotion. They do not follow the guru but do it because others are doing it. The Guru says below that devotion for the Almighty does not come without guidance of the guru.

 

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
Manmukẖ bẖagaṯ karahi bin saṯgur viṇ saṯgur bẖagaṯ na ho▫ī rām.  Ha▫umai mā▫i▫ā rog vi▫āpe mar janmėh ḏukẖ ho▫ī rām.

 

(Manmukh) self-willed persons – do not follow (satigur) the true guru and (bhagat karah-i) displays devotion, but that is not (bhagat-i) devotion which – is living by Naam and – (na hoi = does not happen) cannot be practised (vin-u) without guidance of the true guru.

A self-willed person (viaapey) is afflicted (rog-i) by the malady of (haumai) ego – s/he forgets the Almighty and – (hoee) suffers (dukh-u) distress by way of (janmah-i) being reborn (mar-i) after death – repeatedly.

 

ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਰਜ ਵਿਗੋਈ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥

Mar janmėh ḏukẖ ho▫ī ḏūjai bẖā▫e paraj vigo▫ī viṇ gur ṯaṯ na jāni▫ā.  Bẖagaṯ vihūṇā sabẖ jag bẖarmi▫ā anṯ ga▫i▫ā pacẖẖuṯāni▫ā.

 

(Paraj/prajaa) people (vigoee) are frustrated by pursuing (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas, i.e. leaving the Almighty for other pursuits – and (dukh-u hoee) suffer distress in (mar-i = dying, janmah-i = birth) cycles of births and deaths; they are not (jaaniaa) aware of (tat-u = essence) Divine virtues and commands (vin-u) without guidance of the guru.

(Sabh-u) all (jag-u = world) those (vihoona) bereft of (bhagat-i) devotion (bharmiaa) wander aimlessly, and (gaiaa) depart (pachhutaaniaa) repenting (ant-i) at the end.

ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੩॥

Kot maḏẖe kinai pacẖẖāṇi▫ā har nāmā sacẖ so▫ī.  Nānak nām milai vadi▫ā▫ī ḏūjai bẖā▫e paṯ kẖo▫ī. ||3||

 

(Kinai) some rare person (madhey) amongst (kott-i = crore/ten million) millions (pachaaniaa = recognizes) is aware of (naama) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty, (soi = that) the One (sach-u) Eternal Master.

(Vaddiaaee) glory (milai) is received through living (naam-i) by Naam; while (pat-i) honour (khoee) is lost, and ignominy faced, due to (doojai) other (bhaaey = ideas) pursuits. 3.

 

ਭਗਤਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਦਾ ਵਖਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੀਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

Bẖagṯā kai gẖar kāraj sācẖā har guṇ saḏā vakẖāṇe rām.  Bẖagaṯ kẖajānā āpe ḏī▫ā kāl kantak mār samāṇe rām.

 

(Kaaraj-u = task) the purpose (ghar-i = in house) in minds (kai) of (bhagta) the devotees is to experience (saachaa) the Eternal within; they (sadaa) ever (vakhaaney = utter) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty to become acceptable to IT.

Naam, (khajaana) the treasure (bhagat-i) for devotion (deeaa) is given by (aap-i = self) the Almighty IT-self; one, then, (maar-i = kills) overcomes (kanttak-u = thorn) the bothersome (kaal-u = death) vices, and (smaaney) merges with the Creator.

 

ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਨਿਖੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇਆ ॥

Kāl kantak mār samāṇe har man bẖāṇe nām niḏẖān sacẖ pā▫i▫ā.  Saḏā akẖut kaḏe na nikẖutai har ḏī▫ā sahj subẖā▫i▫ā.

 

They (maar-i = kill) remain safe from (kanttak) the bothersome (kaal/jam) vices, and (bhaaney) are liked (man-i = in mind of) in consideration of the Almighty, because they have (paaiaa) received (nidhaan-u = treasure) the valuable Naam of (sach-u) the Eternal Almighty – and live by it.

This wealth/awareness is (sadaa) ever (akhutt-u) inexhaustible and is not (nikhuttai) exhausted; it (deeaa) is given by the Almighty and they (sahj-i subhaaiaa) intuitively conform to Naam.

 

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਊਚੇ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਊਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਆ

Har jan ūcẖe saḏ hī ūcẖe gur kai sabaḏ suhā▫i▫ā.  Nānak āpe bakẖas milā▫e jug jug sobẖā pā▫i▫ā. ||4||1||2||

 

(Jan = servants) seekers of the Almighty are (oochey = high) of an exalted spiritual state and (sad hi) forever (oochey = high) exalted state; they (suhaaiaa = are good) receive recognition – here and in the hereafter – by following (sabad-i) the teachings (kai) of (gur) the guru.

(Aap-i = self) the Almighty IT-self (bakhas-i) bestows grace to (milaaey) unite them with IT-self; they (paaiaa) obtain (sobha) glory (jug-i jug-i = age after age) forever, says third Nanak. 4. 1. 2.

Note: In this Shabad, the third Guru motivates to conform to Naam or virtues and commands of the Almighty. Awareness of Naam, is the guide for life, and comes from undivided attention to Gurbani, the guru’s word/guidance. This enables to lead life such as to make use of the opportunity in human birth to unite with the Creator.

 

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਜਿਥੈ ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

Sūhī mėhlā 3.  Sabaḏ sacẖai sacẖ sohilā jithai sacẖe kā ho▫e vīcẖāro rām.  Ha▫umai sabẖ kilvikẖ kāte sācẖ rakẖi▫ā ur ḏẖāre rām.

 

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Soohi. (Sach-u) true (sohilaa) praise of the Almighty is done (sabad-i = by Divine word) through obedience (sachai) to the Eternal – and is done in Satsangat/ holy congregation – (jithai) where virtues and commands of (sachey) the Eternal are (veechaaro) contemplated – and leant to practice.

(Sabh-i) all (kilvikh) transgressions caused by (haumai) ego (kaattey = cut) end when (saach-u = truth) Naam/Divine virtues and commands are (raakhiaa) kept (ur-i dhaarey) in mind.

 

ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਵਿਖਾਲਿਆ ਸੋਈ ॥

Sacẖ rakẖi▫ā ur ḏẖāre ḏuṯar ṯāre fir bẖavjal ṯaraṇ na ho▫ī.  Sacẖā saṯgur sacẖī baṇī jin sacẖ vikẖāli▫ā so▫ī.

 

Practice of (rakhiaa) keeping (sach-u) Naam (ur dhaarey) in mind (taarey = ferries) takes one across (dutar-u) the hard-to-cross world ocean, i.e. one overcomes temptations in the world-play, and – (na hoee = does not happen) one does have to (taran-u) cross (bhavjal) the world-ocean (phir-i) again, i.e. is not reborn.

For this, one needs to follow (satigur-u) the true guru, who is himself (sachaa) truthful, i.e. obeys Naam; his (baani = words) teachings are (sachi) based on truth and (jin-i) who (vikhaalia = shows) enables vision, i.e. experience presence, of (soi = that) the One (sach-u) Eternal Almighty.

 

ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

Sācẖe guṇ gāvai sacẖ samāvai sacẖ vekẖai sabẖ so▫ī.  Nānak sācẖā sāhib sācẖī nā▫ī sacẖ nisṯārā ho▫ī. ||1||

 

One who (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues (saachey) of the Eternal, (samaavai) remains absorbed (sach-i) in the Eternal, i.e. conforms to Naam; s/he (veykhai) sees (soee = that) the One (sach-u) Eternal Master (sabh-u) everywhere.

(Sahib-u) the Master is (saacha) Eternal and IT’s (naaee) Naam/Hukam (saachi) is eternal/inevitable; one (nistaara = get across night – life, hoee = happens) is emancipated from vices and hence from cycles of births and deaths, by obedience to (sach-u) Naam, says third Nanak. 1.

 

ਸਾਚੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਸਚਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਚਾ ਹੈ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਰਾਮ ॥

Sācẖai saṯgur sācẖ bujẖā▫i▫ā paṯ rākẖai sacẖ so▫ī rām.  Sacẖā bẖojan bẖā▫o sacẖā hai sacẖai nām sukẖ ho▫ī rām.

 

(Saachai = true) the truth-teaching (satigur-i) true guru (bujhaaiaa = makes known) imparts understanding of (saach-u) Naam – then one overcomes vices – and (soee) the One (sach-u) Eternal Master (raakhai) preserves (pat-i) honour, i.e. that soul is honourably accepted for union with the Almighty.

With the guru’s guidance, one makes (sachaa) true (bhaau) love for (sachaa) for Naam of the Almighty, (bhojan = food) the sustenance/guide for life; (sukh hoee) comfort/peace is attained with conformance (naam-i) to Naam or virtues and commands of (sachai) the Eternal.

 

ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਗਰਭਿ ਨ ਜੂਨੀ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

Sācẖai nām sukẖ ho▫ī marai na ko▫ī garabẖ na jūnī vāsā.  Joṯī joṯ milā▫ī sacẖ samā▫ī sacẖ nā▫e pargāsā.

 

 (Sukh hoee) comfort/peace is experienced by conformance to Naam of (saachai) the Eternal; (koee) anyone who lives (naam-i) by Naam does (na marai = not die) not succumb to vices and there is no more (vaasa = residing) entering (garabh-i) the womb in any (jooni) life forms.

(Joti) the soul obtains (pargaasa = enlightenment) awareness of (naaey) virtues (sach-i) of the Eternal, (milaaee) is united with (jot-i) the Supreme Soul and (samaai) merges (sach-i) in the Eternal.

 

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਨਾ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ॥੨॥

Jinī sacẖ jāṯā se sacẖe ho▫e an▫ḏin sacẖ ḏẖi▫ā▫in.  Nānak sacẖ nām jin hirḏai vasi▫ā nā vīcẖẖuṛ ḏukẖ pā▫in. ||2||

 

Those (jini) who (jaata) know/are aware of (sach-u) Naam, (andin-u = daily) ever (dhiaain-i) pay attention/obey (sach-u) Naam, they; (sey) they (hoey) become (sachey) of truthful living, i.e. conform to Naam.

Those in (jin) whose (hirdai) minds (sach-u) the Eternal (naam-u) Naam (vasiaa) abides, they do not (dukh paain-i) face distress of (vichhurr-i) being separated from the Master, i.e. they merge in the Almighty and are nor reborn, says third Nanak. 2.

 

ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਹੋਈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਚੇ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ਰਾਮ ॥

Sacẖī baṇī sacẖe guṇ gāvahi ṯiṯ gẖar sohilā ho▫ī rām.  Nirmal guṇ sācẖe ṯan man sācẖā vicẖ sācẖā purakẖ parabẖ so▫ī rām.

 

One who (gaavah-i = sings) praises (gun) virtues of (sachey) the Eternal through (baani = words) the guru’s teachings of emulating (sachi = of truth) Divine virtues, (sohila) happy songs of Divine praise (hoee = happen) are naturally sung in (tit-u) that (ghar-i = house) mind, i.e. such a person is blessed.

(Gun) virtues of (saachey) the Eternal are (nirmal) pristine; (tan = body) actions and (man-u = mind) thoughts of the person who remembers them are (saachaa = truthful) in accordance with Naam, as (soee) the One (saacha) Eternal (purakh-u) all-pervasive Master abides in his/her mind.

 

ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਜੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਸਚੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ॥

Sabẖ sacẖ varṯai sacẖo bolai jo sacẖ karai so ho▫ī.  Jah ḏekẖā ṯah sacẖ pasri▫ā avar na ḏūjā ko▫ī.

 

(Sabh-u) everything (vartai) happens as (sach-u) the Eternal (bolai = says) directs; (jo) what the Eternal (karai) does (su) that (hoi) happens.

(Jah) wherever I (deykha) see, (tah) there the Eternal (pasriaa = spread) pervades; there is not (avar-u = other, dooja = second) anyone else.

 

ਸਚੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥

Sacẖe upjai sacẖ samāvai mar janmai ḏūjā ho▫ī.  Nānak sabẖ kicẖẖ āpe karṯā āp karāvai so▫ī. ||3||

 

The soul (upjai = is created) comes (sachey) from the Eternal and (samaavai) merges (sach-i) in the Eternal; it (mar-i = dies) succumbs to vices and (janmai) is born if one (hoee) acts in (dooja) other thoughts/pursuits.

The Almighty (karta) Creator does (sabh-u kichh-u) everything (aapey) IT-self and (soi) IT-self (karaavai) gets things done, i.e. creates the creatures and allots their roles in life, says third Nanak. 3.

 

ਸਚੇ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਵਾਰੇ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰੇ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਾਚੋ ਆਪਿ ਪਛਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

Sacẖe bẖagaṯ sohėh ḏarvāre sacẖo sacẖ vakẖāṇe rām.  Gẖat anṯre sācẖī baṇī sācẖo āp pacẖẖāṇe rām.

 

(Sachey) true/dutiful (bhagat) devotees of (vakhaaney) utter – and live by virtues and commands of (sacho sach-u) the Eternal alone; they (sohah-i = look good) receive glory/are accepted (darvaarey) in Divine court.

They keep (baani = words) directions of (saachi) of the Eternal (antrey) in their (ghatt) minds; and (pachaaney) recognize (saacho) the Eternal (aap-i = self) within them.

 

ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੀ ਹੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

Āp pacẖẖāṇėh ṯā sacẖ jāṇėh sācẖe sojẖī ho▫ī.  Sacẖā sabaḏ sacẖī hai sobẖā sācẖe hī sukẖ ho▫ī.

 

When one (pachhaanah-i) recognizes (aap-u) the self, (ta) then s/he (jaanah-i = knows) gets awareness of (sach-u) Naam and (sojhi hoee) obtains awareness of (saachey) the Eternal being present within.

(Sabad-u = Divine Word) Divine commands are (sachaa) eternal/inviolable, those who obey them have (sach-i = true) lasting (sobha) glory – here and in the hereafter; (sukh-u) peace (hoee) is attained through obedience to (saachey) the Eternal (hi) alone.

 

ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਭਗਤ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੩॥

Sācẖ raṯe bẖagaṯ ik rangī ḏūjā rang na ko▫ī.  Nānak jis ka▫o masṯak likẖi▫ā ṯis sacẖ parāpaṯ ho▫ī. ||4||2||3||

 

(Bhagat) the devotees are (rangey) imbued (rangi) with love of (ik = one) only (saach-i) the Eternal; for them there is no (dooja = second) other worthy (rang-u) love.  

Awareness of (sach-u = truth) Naam (praapat-i hoee) is attained by (tis-u) that person (jis kau) on whose (mastak-i = forehead) destiny it is so (likhiaa) written, – based on deeds -, says third Nanak. 4. 2. 3.
