Rāg nat nārā▫in mėhlā 5  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of (mahla 5) the fourth Guru in Raga Natt Naarain.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.

Rām ha▫o ki▫ā jānā ki▫ā bẖāvai.  Man pi▫ās bahuṯ ḏarsāvai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O Almighty, I (kiaa = what?) do not (jaana) know (kiaa) what (bhaavai) pleases You so as to do that to have vision of You. I have (bahut) great (piaas = thirst) yearning (man-i) in mind to (darsaavai = see) have vision of You. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

So▫ī gi▫ānī so▫ī jan ṯerā jis ūpar rucẖ āvai.  Kirpā karahu jis purakẖ biḏẖāṯe so saḏā saḏā ṯuḏẖ ḏẖi▫āvai. ||1||

(Soee) that person is (giaani = knowledgeable) aware of, and (soee) that person is (teyra) Your (jan = servant) devotee, i.e. obeys Your commands, (oopar-i) on (jis-u) whom Your (ruch = aptitude) liking is, i.e. one knows Your liking by Your grace.

One on (jis-u) whom You (karhu) bestow (kripa) kindness, o (purakh) all-pervasive (bidhaatey) Creator, (so) that person (sadaa sadaa) for ever (dhiaavai) invokes (tudh-u) You, i.e. pays attention to Your virtues and commands, as guide for life. 1.

Kavan jog kavan gi▫ān ḏẖi▫ānā kavan gunī rījẖāvai.  So▫ī jan so▫ī nij bẖagṯā jis ūpar rang lāvai. ||2||

(Kavan) what are those (jog) Yogic practices, (giaan) knowledge and (dhiaana) meditation and by (kavan) what (guni) virtues, is the Almighty (reejhaavai) pleased?

No one can know and practice the above on his/her own: (Soee) only that (jan-u = servant) person becomes a seeker and Your, (nij = personal) only Your, (bhagta) devotee (oopar-i) on whom You (laavai) create (rang-u) love for Your virtues and commands. 2.

Saṯsang lag ehu sukẖ pā▫i▫o har gun saḏ hī gāvai. ||3||

(Saaee) only that (mat-i) counsel, that (budh-i) intellect and (siaanap) wisdom by (jit-u) which one does not (bisraavai) forget (prabh-u) the Almighty (nimakh) even for a moment, is good.

(Eyh-u) this (sukh = comfort) peace/happiness – that comes from Your remembrance – (paaio) is obtained by one who (lag-i = engages) joins (santsang-i = company of saints) the holy congregation and (sad hi) ever (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (ha-i) the Almighty. 3.

Ḏekẖi▫o acẖraj mahā mangal rūp kicẖẖ ān nahī ḏistāvai.  Kaho Nānak morcẖā gur lāhi▫o ṯah garabẖ jon kah āvai. ||4||1||

Then s/he (deykhio) sees (acharaj-u) the wondrous Almighty, (roop) the embodiment of (mahaa = great) sublime (mangal) joy, everywhere and not (disttavai) see (aan) anyone else.

This happens when (gur-i) the guru (laahio) removes (morcha = rust) the influence of past transgressions; (tah) then one (kah = why?) does not (aavai = come) enter (garabh jon) the womb, i.e. is not reborn, (kahu) say o fifth Nanak. 4. 1.

Nat nārā▫in mėhlā 5 ḏupḏe  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Compositions (dupd-e) of two stanzas of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raag Natt Naarain.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.

Ulāhano mai kāhū na ḏī▫o.  Man mīṯẖ ṯuhāro kī▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Mai) I do not (deeo) give (ulaahno) blame to (kaahoo) to anyone – for my state of suffering. Whatever (tuhaaro) Your (keeo = doing) will is, – it is because of my deeds and – (meetth = sweet) acceptable to my (man) mind.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Āgi▫ā mān jān sukẖ pā▫i▫ā sun sun nām ṯuhāro jī▫o.  Īhāʼn ūhā har ṯum hī ṯum hī ih gur ṯe manṯar ḏariṛ▫ī▫o. ||1||

O (jeeo) revered Master, anyone who (sun-i sun-i) listens to (tuhaaro) Your (naam-u) virtues and commands, (jaan-i) understands and (maan-i = carries out) practices them, s/he (paaiaa) obtains (sukh) peace. It is (tum hi) You alone and You alone whose writ runs (eehaa’n) here and (oohaa’n = there) in the hereafter; (ihu) this (mantr-u = counsel) understanding is (drirreeo) made firm with teachings (tey) from the guru. 1.

Jab ṯe jān pā▫ī eh bāṯā ṯab kusal kẖem sabẖ thī▫o.  Sāḏẖsang Nānak pargāsi▫o ān nāhī re bī▫o. ||2||1||2||

(Tey) from (jab = when) the time I (paaee) obtained (jaan-i) understanding of (eyh) these (baataa) things – and started practicing them, – since (tab) then (sabh = all) complete (kusal) well-being and (kheym) happiness is (theeo = happened) experienced.

(Saadhsag-i) in company of the guru – in holy congregation – I (pargaasio = enlightened) became aware that wherever we see there is not (aan = other, beeo = other) anyone other than the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 2.1. 2.

Nat mėhlā 5.  Jā ka▫o bẖa▫ī ṯumārī ḏẖīr.  Jam kī ṯarās mitī sukẖ pā▫i▫ā niksī ha▫umai pīr. ||1|| rahā▫o.

One (kau) to (ja) whom (bhaee = happens) is (tumaari) Your (dheer) solace/consolation, i.e. one who places the self in care/obedience of the Almighty.

His/her (traas) fear of (jam) Divine justice (mittee) is removed and s/he (paaiaa) attains (sukh-u) peace; his/her (peer/peer) pain caused by (haumai) ego – acting by self-will and thus being separated from the Almighty – (niksee = goes out) ends.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Ŧapaṯ bujẖānī amriṯ bānī ṯaripṯai ji▫o bārik kẖīr. Māṯ piṯā sājan sanṯ mere sanṯ sahā▫ī bīr. ||1||

(Amrit) the life-giving (baani = words) Divine messages received by the mind which remembers the Almighty, (bujhaani) extinguish (tapat-i = heat) the fire of craving (jio) like (baarik) the baby (triptey) is satiated with (kheer) milk.

Such people acknowledge and consider (sant = saints) the seekers dear like (maat) the mother, (pitaa) father, (saajan) friends, (sahaaee) helpful and (beer = brothers) siblings. 1.

Kẖule bẖaram bẖīṯ mile gopālā hīrai beḏẖe hīr.  Bisam bẖa▫e Nānak jas gāvaṯ ṯẖākur gunī gahīr. ||2||2||3||

Their (bheet = walls/obstacles) gates of (bhram) delusion – that God is far somewhere – (khuley) open, and they (mil-e) find (gopaala = Sustainor of the world) the Almighty within; (heerai) the jewel (beydhey = pierced) cuts (heer) jewels, i.e. opening of the mind by overcoming ego is as hard as cutting a diamond and is achieved by awareness of jewel-like valuable Divine virtues. Divine grace.

(Tthaakur) the Master is (gaheer) profound (guni) in virtues; one (bhaey = become) is (bisam) wonder-struck (gaavat = singing) praising (gun) virtues of the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 2. 2. 3.

Nat mėhlā 5.  Apnā jan āpėh āp uḏẖāri▫o.  Āṯẖ pahar jan kai sang basi▫o man ṯe nāhi bisāri▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Natt. The Almighty (udhaario) emancipates (apna = own) IT’s (jan = servant) devotee from vices in the world-play (aapah-i aap-i) on IT’s own, i.e. a devotee who lives by Naam or Divine virtues and commands is not affected by vices.

IT (basio) abides (kai = of, sang-i = in company) with (jan) the devotee (aatth = eight x pahar = three hours) all of twenty four hours – round the clock – and never (bisaario) forgets him/her (tey) from IT’s (man) mind, i.e. Divine grace is unbroken.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Baran cẖihan nāhī kicẖẖ pekẖi▫o ḏās kā kul na bicẖāri▫o.  Kar kirpā nām har ḏī▫o sahj subẖā▫e savāri▫o. ||1||

IT does not (peykhio = see) look for (baran-u = colour) complexion or (chihan-u) features or (beechaario) consider (kul-u) lineage, of the devotee, i.e. looks are no consideration.

(Har-i) the Almighty (kar-i kirpa) kindly (deeo = gives) imparts awareness of (naam-u) IT’s virtues and commands, and (savaario) transforms the devotee (sahj-i subhaaey) to naturally live by them. 1.

Mahā bikẖam agan kā sāgar ṯis ṯe pār uṯāri▫o.  Pekẖ pekẖ Nānak bigsāno punah punah balihāri▫o. ||2||3||4||

The world-play is like (saagar-u) an ocean which is (mahaa = great) terribly (bikham) hard to cross; the Almighty (paar-i = far shore, utaario = lands) takes the devotee across (tis) that.

Fifth Nanak is (bigsaano = happy) is fascinated (peykh-i peykh-i) seeing all this and (balihaario) is sacrifice (punah punah) again and again, i.e. ever adores the Master. 2. 3. 4.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Natt. One who (kahio = says) keeps (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (mah-i) in (man) mind – to live by them;

Influence of (kott-i = crore/ten million) millions of (ta ka = of that) his/her (apraadh) wrong-doings (mittah-i) is erased from the mind (bheetar-i) in (khin) a moment, i.e. as soon as one starts living by Naam, and (dukh-u) pain caused by acting under old influences does not (rahio) remain.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Kẖojaṯ kẖojaṯ bẖa▫i▫o bairāgī sāḏẖū sang lahi▫o.  Sagal ṯi▫āg ek liv lāgī har har cẖaran gahi▫o. ||1||

People show (bhaio) they are (bairaagi) detached, and wander (khojat khojat) searching for the Almighty until they (lahio) find (sang-i = company) guidance of (saadhoo) the guru.

Only then they really (tiaag-i) give up (sagal) everything else to (laagi = fix, liv = focus) focus on (eyk) the One Almighty and (gahio) hold (charan) feet of (har-i har-i) the Almighty, i.e. place the self in care and obedience of the Almighty. 1.

Kahaṯ mukaṯ sunṯe nisṯāre jo jo saran pa▫i▫o.  Simar simar su▫āmī parabẖ apunā kaho Nānak anaḏ bẖa▫i▫o. ||2||4||5||

(Jo jo) all those who (kahat = say) remember, and those who (sunt-e) listen to Naam, i.e. take Divine virtues and commands as guide for life, they (nistaarey) are ferried across the world-ocean by the Almighty.

Says fifth Nanak: One (bhaio) experiences (anad-u) bliss/joy (simar-i simar-i simar-i) in keeping in mind, in thought, word and deed, virtues and commands of (apuna = own) our (suaami) Master. 2. 4. 5.

Nat mėhlā 5.  Cẖaran kamal sang lāgī dorī.  Sukẖ sāgar kar param gaṯ morī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Natt. My (ddori = string, gaze) attention (laagi) is fixed (sang-i = with) on Your (kamal) lotus (charan) feet, i.e. I have placed myself in Your care and obedience, o God.

O Almighty, (saagar = ocean) the source of (sukh) comfort/peace, please (kar-i) make (meyri) my (gar-i) state (param) supreme – by finding You within.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

You (beedho = pierced) caused (khori) intoxication of (apney = own) Your (jan) devotee with Your (prem) love and to (gahaaio kau = caused to hold to, anchla = robe) follow Your commands, i.e. engaged me in loving devotion and obedience to You.

(Ras-u = taste) love for (bhagat-i) devotion (upjio) developed by (gaavat = singing) praising and emulating Your (jas = glory) virtues and (tori = broken) ended (jaali = web) entanglements (ki) of (maaiaa) the world-play like relatives, wealth, status, and pleasures. 1.

Pūran pūr rahe kirpā niḏẖ ān na pekẖa▫o horī.  Nānak mel lī▫o ḏās apunā parīṯ na kabhū thorī. ||2||5||6||

I find (nidh-i = treasure, kirpa = kindness) the kind Almighty (poor-i = filling, pooran = fully) all-pervasive Almighty everywhere; I do not (pekhau) see (aan hori) anyone else.

The Master (meyl-i leeo) united me, (apna = own) IT’s (daas-u = servant) devotee with IT-self; this (preet-i) affection shall (na kabahoo) never (thori) reduce, says fifth Nanak. 2.5. 6.

Nat mėhlā 5.  Mere man jap jap har nārā▫iṇ.  Kabhū na bisrahu man mere ṯe āṯẖ pahar gun gā▫iṇ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Natt. (Meyrey) my (man) mind, (jap-i) remember and practice (jap-u = what needs to be remembered) Naam or virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (naaraain) Master.

Please (kabahoo na) never (bisrhu) be forgotten (tey) from (meyrey) my (man) mind and enable me to (gaain = sing) praise and emulate Your (gun) virtues (aatth = eight x pahar = three hours) twenty four hours – round the clock.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Sāḏẖū ḏẖūr kara▫o niṯ majan sabẖ kilbikẖ pāp gavā▫iṇ.  Pūran pūr rahe kirpā niḏẖ gẖat gẖat ḏisat samā▫iṇ. ||1||

May I (nit) ever (karau = do) take (majan) bath (dhoor-i) with dust of the feet of (saadhoo) the guru, i.e. purify my mind with the guru’s teaching of living by Naam, and (gavaain = lose) give up (kilbikh) vices and (paap) transgressions.

You (kirpa nidh-i) the kind Almighty (poor-i rahey) pervade (pooran = fully) everywhere; I (distt-i = sight) see You (samaain-u = pervasive) present (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every body. 1.

(Lakh = hundred thousand, kott-i = crore/ten million) millions of (jaap) recitations of Mantras, (taap) austerities and (pooja) worships cannot (laain) be considered (tul-i) equal to (simran-i) remembrance and practice of virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty.

With (duey) both (kar) hands (jorr-i) folded, fifth Nanak (maangai) asks for (daan-u = alms) the benediction to enable me to be (dasaain-u) the servant of (daasan) of the servants of (teyrey) Your (daasan-i = servants) devotees. 2. 6. 7.

Nat mėhlā 5.  Merai sarbas nām niḏẖān.  Kar kirpā sāḏẖū sang mili▫o saṯgur ḏīno ḏān. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Natt. (Nidhaan-u) the treasure of awareness of (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands is (sarbas-u) everything (meyrai) for me.

The Almighty (kar-i kirpa) was kind that I (milio) found (sang-i) company of (saadhoo) the guru, and (satiguru-i) the true guru (deeno = gave) imparted me awareness of Naam as (daan-u = alms) to live by.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

The Almighty is (sukhdaata = giver of peace) is the source of solace, and (bhanjanhaara) destroyer of (dukh) distress; (gaau = singing) praising and emulating IT’s (keertan = praises) virtues imparts (pooran) perfect (giaan-u) awareness – of how to lead life.

It (keeney = done, khandd khandd = broken to pieces) helped me get rid of insatiable (kaam) desires, (krodh-u) wrath and (lobh-u) greed and (moorr) the stupidity of (abhimaan-u) vanity has been (binsio) destroyed. 1.

(Prabh) Almighty, You (jaan-u) know everything (antarjaami) that is in the minds of all; (kiaa) what all (gun) virtues of (teyrey) Yours can I (aakh-i vakhaana) state.

(Saran-i) sanctuary of Your (kamal) lotus (charan) feet, i.e. being in Your care and obedience, is (saagar= sea) the source of (sukh) peace; fifth Nanak (sad) ever (kurbaan = is sacrifice) adores the Almighty. 2. 7. 8.

So that my (dukh-u) pain of separation from the Almighty due to (bipreet-i = opposite) wrong practices – by having forgotten Naam – (binsai = destroyed) ends; I shall (arpau) give my (man-u = mind) thoughts and (tan-u = body) actions and (cheet-u) remember them. 1.

Mere man sev safal har gẖāl.  Le gur pag ren ravāl.  Sabẖ ḏaliḏ bẖanj ḏukẖ ḏāl.  Har ho ho ho naḏar nihāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.

My (man) mind, (seyv = serve) carry out (ghaal = toil/tasks) commands of (har-i) the Almighty, and make your life (saphal) fruitful, i.e. find the Almighty within. For this, (ley) take (reyn, ravaal) dust of (pag) the feet of, i.e. follow guidance of, the guru

This way you will (bhanj-i) destroy (sabh-i) all (daalid/daridar) misery and (daal/dal = grind/destroy) end (dukh) the agony – of remaining separated from – the Almighty, because (har-i) the Almighty (ho ho = is) bestows (nadar-i = sight) grace and (nihaal) happiness on those who live by Divine commands. 1.

The body/mind is (grihu = house) the abode (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty who (aap-i) IT-self (savaario = transforms) improves it, i.e. motivates one to find Divine virtues within and emulate them; (har-i) the Almighty is epitome of (rang) joy and IT’s (mahal) palace is decorated with(laal laal) jewels, i.e. IT’s presence makes one aware of Divine virtues and (rang) creates joy, (har-i) the Almighty should be (laal laal laal) lovingly remembered in thought, word and deed.

(Ham) I (kee-ee = made) took (gur) the guru (baseetthi) as the go-between (ki = of) with the Almighty, i.e. followed instructions of the guru; then the Almighty (kari = did, kripa = kindness) bestowed grace and (aaio) came to (aap-i = of self) IT’s (grih-i) home – my body/mind; and (ham) I (bhaee) became (nihaal x 4 times) happy to lead life by the four blessings, namely Dharam = dutifulness, Arth = economic well-being, Kaam = fulfilment of desires/aspirations, Mokh = emancipation from separation from the Almighty and hence of rebirth. 1.

When (har-i har-i) the Almighty (miley) met me, I (bhaey) was (galtaan) lost in ecstasy and became (nihaal nihaal) highly joyful, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 2. 1. 7.

It (lahanti = removes) obviates commission of (sabh) all (kilbikh) transgressions and (paap) wrong-doings. This (ho ho ho) happens to those in whose (likhat = writing) destiny it is so (likhanti) written. 1.

(Jan) seekers of the Almighty (triptey = satiated) are happy (sun-i) listening to – and emulating – (kathaa) virtues of the Almighty; they (jap-i) remember and emulate (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating virtues of the Almighty and become like (har-i) the Almighty, says fourth Nanak. 2. 2. 8.
