ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੨ ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
Mārū mėhlā 4 gẖar 2 Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.
Composition (mahla 4) of the fourth Guru in Raga Maaroo, (ghar-u 2) to be sung to the second beat. Invoking the one all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.
ਜਪਿਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਕ ਜਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ॥ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਭੰਜਿ ਸੁਦਾਮੇ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਇ ਤਰੇ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥
Japi▫o nām suk janak gur bacẖnī har har saraṇ pare. Ḏālaḏ bẖanj suḏāme mili▫o bẖagṯī bẖā▫e ṯare. Bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal har nām kirṯārath gurmukẖ kirpā kare. ||1||
The sage (suk) Sukdev and the king Janak (japio) remembered, and lived by, (naam-u) virtues and commands of, and (parey) placed themselves (sarn-i = in sanctuary) in care and obedience of, the Almighty, (bachni = with words) as taught by (gur) the guru.
(Daalad/daaridr) misery/poverty of the devotee Sudaama (bhanj-i = destroyed) ended when he (miliaa) met – Krishna, metaphor for – the Almighty; all the above (tarey = swam/got across world-ocean) were emancipated because (bhagti) devotion was their (bhaaey) motive.
The Almighty (vachhal-u) loves (bhagat-i) devotion; those who live by (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty are (kritaarath-u) successful; the Almighty (kripa karey) is kind to those (gurmukh-i) who follow the guru’s teachings. 1.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਉਧਰੇ ॥ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਬਿਦਰੁ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Mere man nām japaṯ uḏẖre. Ḏẖarū par▫hilāḏ biḏar ḏāsī suṯ gurmukẖ nām ṯare. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (meyrey) mind, those who (japat) remember and live by (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (udhrey) are emancipated – from vices in life and rebirth on death.
The devotees Dhru, Prahilaad, and Bidar (sut-u) the son of (daasi) a maidservant (tarey = swam) got across the world-ocean, i.e. were emancipated by (gurmukh-i) following the guru’s teachings to live (naam-i) by Divine virtues and commands. 1.
(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.
ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਉਧਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਮਾ ਜੈਦੇਉ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਸਭਿ ਦੋਖ ਗਏ ਚਮਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਉਧਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਟਰੇ ॥੨॥
Kaljug nām parḏẖān paḏārath bẖagaṯ janā uḏẖre. Nāmā jaiḏe▫o Kabīr Ŧrilocẖan sabẖ ḏokẖ ga▫e cẖamre. Gurmukẖ nām lage se uḏẖre sabẖ kilbikẖ pāp tare. ||2||
(Kaljug-i) in the age of conflicts/duality, (bhagat = devoted, janaa = people) the devotees (udhrey) are saved through Naam, (pradhaan-u = head) the supreme (padaarath-u = substance) resource.
The devotees, (nama) Namdev, Jaideo/Jaidev, Kabir, Trilochan and (chamrey = cobbler) Ravidas; (sabh-i) all their (dokh = faults) shortcomings (gaey = went) left them because of practice of Naam.
Those who (lagey) apply themselves to living (naam-i) by Naam, (sey) they (udhrey) are saved; as (sabh-i) all their (kilbikh, paap) transgressions (ttarey) are obviated. 2.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸਭਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਦੋਖ ਪਰਹਰੇ ॥ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਰਵਤ ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਉਧਰਿਓ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਨਰਹਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਉਗ੍ਰਸੈਣਿ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਤੋੜਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੩॥
Jo jo nām japai aprāḏẖī sabẖ ṯin ke ḏokẖ parhare. Besu▫ā ravaṯ ajāmal uḏẖāri▫o mukẖ bolai nārā▫iṇ narhare. Nām japaṯ ugarsaiṇ gaṯ pā▫ī ṯoṛ banḏẖan mukaṯ kare. ||3||
(Jo jo) all those (apraadhi = wrongdoers) who are given to committing transgressions, (sabh-i) all (tin key) their (dokh) faults (parharey = kept away) are obviated if they – learn from the guru and as taught by him – (japai = remember) comply with (naam-u) instructions of the Almighty to the soul.
Ajaamal who was (ravat) involved with (beysuaa) a prostitute (udhrio) was saved (bolai) by uttering the name of (naaraain narharey) the Almighty.
(badhan) fetters of Ugarsain – the father of Kansa – were (toorr-i) broken and he was (karey) made (mukat-i) free from detention by his son; he (paaee) obtained (gat-i) freedom and was rewarded with kingdom for (japat) remembering (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands. 3.
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰੇ ॥ ਸੇਵਕ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਵਿਦੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਉਧਰੇ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਉਰ ਧਰਿਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥
Jan ka▫o āp anūgrahu kī▫ā har angīkār kare. Sevak paij rakẖai merā goviḏ saraṇ pare uḏẖre. Jan Nānak har kirpā ḏẖārī ur ḏẖari▫o nām hare. ||4||1||
(Har-i) the Almighty (keeaa = done) has always been (anugrahu) kind (kau) to (jan = servants) the devotees and (angeekaar-u karey) takes their side in fight with evil.
(Govind/govind = master of the world) the Almighty (rakhai) preserves (paij) honour of (seyvak = servant) the devotees; whosoever (parey) places the self in IT’s (saran-i) care and obedience, (udhrey) is emancipated.
But only those to whom (har-i) the Almighty (dhaari = bestows, kirpa = mercy) is kind, that person (dhario) keeps Naam of (harey) the Almighty in mind, says humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1.

Mārū mėhlā 4. Siḏẖ samāḏẖ japi▫o liv lā▫ī sāḏẖik mun japi▫ā. Jaṯī saṯī sanṯokẖī ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā mukẖ inḏrāḏik ravi▫ā. Saraṇ pare japi▫o ṯe bẖā▫e gurmukẖ pār pa▫i▫ā. ||1||
Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Maaroo. (Sidh) accomplished saints sit (samaadh-i) in deep meditation with (liv) attention (laaee) fixed on the Almighty; (saadhik) seekers and (mun-i) sages (japio) remember and obey the Almighty.
(Jati) celibates, (sati) donors, (santokhi) contented people (dhiaaiaa) keep IT in mind and gods like (indraadik) Indra etc (ravia) utter/praise IT’s virtues (mukh-i) from the mouth.
Those who (parey = place, saran-i = in sanctuary) surrender/submit themselves and (japio) remember IT, (tey) they are (bhaaey) pleasing to the Master; all those (gurmukh-i) who follow the guru’s teachings to (japia) remember to obey IT, and (paiaa = land, paar-i = on far shore) get across the world-ocean. 1.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਤਰਿਆ ॥ ਧੰਨਾ ਜਟੁ ਬਾਲਮੀਕੁ ਬਟਵਾਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Mere man nām japaṯ ṯari▫ā. Ḏẖannā jat bālmīk batvārā gurmukẖ pār pa▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
(Meyrey) my (man) mind, one who (japat) remembers and practices (naam) Divine virtues and commands (tariaa = swims) gets across the word ocean – to the Almighty.
For example, Dhannaa, (jatt-u) the farmer, Baalmeek (battvaara) the highway robber later (gurmukh-i) followed the guru and (paiaa = landed, paar-i = on far shore) got across the world ocean – to the Almighty. 1.
(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬੇ ਜਪਿਓ ਰਿਖਿ ਬਪੁਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੰਕਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਦੇਵੀ ਜਪਿਓ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੨॥
Sur nar gaṇ ganḏẖarbe japi▫o rikẖ bapurai har gā▫i▫ā. Sankar barahmai ḏevī japi▫o mukẖ har har nām japi▫ā. Har har nām jinā man bẖīnā ṯe gurmukẖ pār pa▫i▫ā. ||2||
(Nar = persons, sur-i = like gods) devotees, (gan) servants of the gods and (gandharbey) gods’ singers (japio) remember God; (rikh-i/rishi) sages (bapurai = poor) humbly (gaaiaa = sing) praise (har-i) the Almighty.
Shankar/Mahesh, (brhmai) Brahma and (deyvi) the goddess (japio) remember/owe allegiance to the Master; they ever (japiaa) remember Naam/commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty (mukh-i) by mouth – and act on them.
All (jinaa) whose (man) mind is (bheenaa = rinsed) imbued with love of the Almighty, (t-e) those (gurmukh-i) followers of the guru (paar-i paiaa) get across the world-ocean. 2.
ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤਿਆ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਲੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੩॥
Kot kot ṯeṯīs ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫o har japṯi▫ā anṯ na pā▫i▫ā. Beḏ purāṇ simriṯ har japi▫ā mukẖ pandiṯ har gā▫i▫ā. Nām rasāl jinā man vasi▫ā ṯe gurmukẖ pār pa▫i▫ā. ||3||
(Teytees) thirty three (kott-i) crore – gods of Hindu faith – (dhiaaiaa) invoke the Almighty (kott-i) crore of times, but do not (paaiaa) find (ant-u) the expanse/virtues and powers of (har-i) the Almighty.
(Beyd) the Vedas, Puranas, Smritis, i.e. the scriptures, (japiaa) remember the Almighty; and (pandit) the priests/scholars (gaaiaa = sing) praise the Almighty.
Those (jinaa) in whose (man-i) mind (rasaal-u) joy-giving (naam-u) Divine virtues abide, (tey) those (gurmukh-i) followers of the guru (paar-i paiaa) get across the world-ocean. 3.
ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨ ਜਪਿਆ ਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਕਰਿ ਸਕਿਆ ॥ ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ
ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਓ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥
Anaṯ ṯarangī nām jin japi▫ā mai gaṇaṯ na kar saki▫ā. Gobiḏ kirpā kare thā▫e pā▫e jo har parabẖ man bẖā▫i▫ā. Gur ḏẖār kirpā har nām ḏariṛ▫ā▫i▫o jan Nānak nām la▫i▫ā. ||4||2||
(Naam) virtues and commands of the Almighty are (anat =numerous, tarangi = waves/types) multifaceted – covering everything; (mai) I (na sakiaa) cannot (kar-i = do, ganat = counting) count (jin) those who (japiaa) remember and obey IT.
Those (jo) who (bhaaiaa) are pleasing (man-i) to the mind of (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master; (gobid-u/gobind = master of the world) IT (kripa karey) kindly (paaey = puts, tthaaey = in place) accept them for union.
Those to whom (gur-i) the guru (dhaar-i = bestows, kripa = kindness) is kind to (drirraaiaa) create firm commitment for Naam of the Almighty, such (jan = servants) devotees (laiaa) utter/praise and obey Naam, says fourth Nanak. 4. 2.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥ ਜਿਥੈ ਅਵਘਟ ਗਲੀਆ ਭੀੜੀਆ ਤਿਥੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇ ॥੧॥
Har har nām niḏẖān lai gurmaṯ har paṯ pā▫e. Halaṯ palaṯ nāl cẖalḏā har anṯe la▫e cẖẖadā▫e. Jithai avgẖat galī▫ā bẖīṛī▫ā ṯithai har har mukaṯ karā▫e. ||1||
Awareness of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty is (nidhaan-u = treasure) the resource to find God; one who (lai) obtains that awareness from the guru, (paaey) finds (har-i) the Almighty (pat-i/patee) Master.
Naam (chalda = walks, naal-i = with) accompanies the soul (halat-i) in here and (palat-i) in the hereafter; it (laey chhaddaaey) delivers (antey = at last moment) when account of deeds is taken,
(jithai) where (galeeaa = streets) the space is (avghatt) difficult and (bheerreeaa) narrow – with no escape route, i.e. one cannot escape Divine justice; (tithai) there (har-i har-i) the Almighty (karaaey) gets one, who has lived by Naam, (mukat-i) freed, i.e. the agent of Divine justice cannot lay hands on one who lives by Naam. 1.
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ॥ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪੋ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Mere saṯigurā mai har har nām driṛ▫ā▫e. Merā māṯ piṯā suṯ banḏẖpo mai har bin avar na mā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (meyey) my (satguraa) true guru, please (drirraaey) create firm commitment, for (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating virtues of the Almighty, in my mind.
The Almighty is (meyra) my (maat = mother, pitaa = father) parents, (sut = son) children and (bandhapo) relatives, i.e. is ever close to me to help; (mai) I do not look to (avar-u) another (bin-u) except (har-i) the Almighty, o my (maaey) mother/teacher – guru. 1.
(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.
ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਇ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਦੜੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ
ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
Mai har birhī har nām hai ko▫ī āṇ milāvai mā▫e. Ŧis āgai mai joḏ▫ṛī merā parīṯam ḏe▫e milā▫e. Saṯgur purakẖ ḏa▫i▫āl parabẖ har mele dẖil na pā▫e. ||2||
(Mai) my (birhaee = dear) longing is for (har-i) the Almighty, – which is fulfilled through awareness of – (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty; only if (koee) someone can (aan-i) come and (milaavai = cause to meet) make me aware of Naam.
I shall make (joddrri) supplication (aagai = before) to him/her, to (dey-i = cause, milaaey = to meet) lead me to (meyra) my (preetam-u) beloved Almighty Master.
When (purakh-u = person, satigur-u = true guru) the true guru is (daiaal) kind, he (meyley) unites with (har-i) Almighty (prabh-u) Master (na paaey = does not make, ddhil = delay) in no time. 2.
ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਓਇ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਓਇ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
Jin har har nām na cẖeṯi▫o se bẖāghīṇ mar jā▫e. O▫e fir fir jon bẖavā▫ī▫ah mar jamėh āvai jā▫e. O▫e jam ḏar baḏẖe mārī▫ah har ḏargėh milai sajā▫e. ||3||
Those (jin) who – do not follow the guru, they do not (cheytio) keep in mind to act by – (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty; (sey) they are (bhaagheen) unfortunate (mar-i jaaey = die) to keep succumbing to vices.
(Oey) they are (bhavaaeeah-i = caused to go round) put in (jon-i) the womb (phir-i phir-i) again and again; they (mar-i) die to (jammah-i) be reborn, (aavai) coming to, and (jaaey) going from, the world.
(Oey) they are (badhey = bound) detained (dar-i = at the place of, jam = Divine justice) by Divine justice and (mareeah-i = hit) pushed away from the Almighty, and (milai) receive (sajaaey) punishment of rebirth (dargah) at the court of (har-i) the Almighty. 3.
ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਮ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਗਜੀਵਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੩॥
Ŧū parabẖ ham sarṇāgaṯī mo ka▫o mel laihu har rā▫e. Har ḏẖār kirpā jagjīvanā gur saṯgur kī sarṇā▫e. Har jī▫o āp ḏa▫i▫āl ho▫e jan Nānak har melā▫e. ||4||1||3||
I (sarnaagti) place myself in care of (too) You, the (prabh-u) Master; please (meyli leyhu) unite (mo kau) me with You, o (raaey = king) Sovereign (har-i) Almighty Master.
O (har-i) Almighty (jagjeevna = life of the world) Creator, please (dhaar-i kripa) be kind to lead me to (sarnaaey) care/guidance of (gur) the great (satigur) true guru.
Ultimately it is when You, (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (hoey) are (aap-i = self) Your-self (daiaal-u = compassionate) kind, that IT (meylaaey) unites with IT-self, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1. 3.

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਹਉ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਸਾਇਦਾ ਕੋ ਦਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਖਨ ਖੰਨੀਐ ਮੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਮੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਪਿਰੰਮ ਕਾ ਕਿਉ ਸਜਣੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
Mārū mėhlā 4. Ha▫o pūnjī nām ḏasā▫iḏā ko ḏase har ḏẖan rās. Ha▫o ṯis vitahu kẖan kẖannī▫ai mai mele har parabẖ pās. Mai anṯar parem piramm kā ki▫o sajaṇ milai milās. ||1||
Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Maaroo. (Hau) I (dasaaida = enquire/ask for) wish to have (poonji = financial capital) the wealth of awareness of (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty – the means to get to the Almighty; I wonder if (ko) someone can (dasey = tells) impart me (dhan-u = wealth, raas-i = capital) this awareness.
(Hau) I am ready (khan khaneeai = be cut into pieces) to do anything at his/her bidding, if s/he (meyley = causes to meet) leads me to be (paas-i) with (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master.
I (preym = love) yearn for (piramm) the Beloved; (kiau) how may (sajan-u) the friend (milai) be found, so that I may (milaas-i) be with IT. 1.
ਮਨ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਧੀਰਕ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Man pi▫āri▫ā miṯrā mai har har nām ḏẖan rās. Gur pūrai nām driṛ▫ā▫i▫ā har ḏẖīrak har sābās. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O my (man) mind, my (piaariaa) dear (mitra) friend, (mai) I have obtained (dhan raas-i = financial capital) the wealth of awareness of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty.
(Poorai) the perfect (gur) guru has (drirraaiaa) created firm commitment to Naam of in me; one who has Naam, the Almighty gives him/her (dheerak/dheeraj) solace and (saabaas-i) glory. 1.
(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੈ ਦਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਜਨ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
Har har āp milā▫e gur mai ḏase har ḏẖan rās. Bin gur parem na labẖ▫ī jan vekẖhu man nirjās. Har gur vicẖ āp rakẖi▫ā har mele gur sābās. ||2||
O (har-i har-i) Almighty, (aap-i = self) You please (milaaey = cause to meet) lead me to the guru who (dasey = tells) can make me aware of (dhan-u raas-i = financial capital – the resource for journey to You) Divine virtues and commands.
(Preym-u = love) the Beloved cannot (labhaee) be found (bin-u) except with guidance of the guru; O (jan = servants) seekers, reflect (man-i) in mind and you will (nirjaas-i = decide) understand.
(Har-i) the Almighty (rakhiaa) has kept (aap-u) IT-self (vich-i) in the guru; (saabaas-i) glory to the guru who (meyley) enables to find the Almighty. 2.
ਸਾਗਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਖੋਲਿ ਦੇਇ ਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਗ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਤਿਖ ਮੁਈਆ ਕੰਧੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
Sāgar bẖagaṯ bẖandār har pūre saṯgur pās. Saṯgur ṯuṯẖā kẖol ḏe▫e mukẖ gurmukẖ har pargās. Manmukẖ bẖāg vihūṇi▫ā ṯikẖ mu▫ī▫ā kanḏẖī pās. ||3||
(Saagar = ocean/large) great (bhanddaar = stocks) treasures (bhagat-i) of devotion for (har-i) the Almighty are available (paas-i) with (poorey) the perfect (satigur) true guru.
When (satigur) the true guru is (tutthaa) is pleased, he (khol-i) opens the door to the treasure, (dey-i) gives (mukh-i) in the mouth to utter by, and (pargaas-i) enlightens the mind, (gurmukh-i) through the guru’s teachings, with (pargaas-i = light) awareness of Divine virtues and commands, i.e. creates firm understanding/commitment for obedience of the Almighty.
(Vihooniaa = bereft of, bhaag = fortune) the unfortunate ones (manmukh-i = self-willed) who do not follow the guru, (mueeaa) die of (tikh) thirst (paas-i) near (kandhi) bank of the pool, i.e. remain ignorant despite the guru being ever ready to help. 3.
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਉ ਮਾਗਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ ਚਿਰੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵਡੜੀ ਆਸ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੪॥
Gur ḏāṯā ḏāṯār hai ha▫o māga▫o ḏān gur pās. Cẖirī vicẖẖunnā mel parabẖ mai man ṯan vadṛī ās. Gur bẖāvai suṇ benṯī jan Nānak kī arḏās. ||4||2||4||
(Gur-u) the guru (hai) is (daataa, daataar-u = giver) beneficent; (hau) I (maagau) beg (daan-u) alms, i.e. request for guidance, (paas-i) from the guru.
O my guru, I have been (vichhunnaa) separated (chiri) for long, please (meyl-i) unite me with (prabh) the Master; (mai) I have (vaddrree = great) strong (aas- = wish) yearning for IT.
I hope (gur) the guru will (bhaavai) be pleased (sun-i) to listen to (beynti) the entreaty and (ardaas-i) supplication of (jan) the humble servant, says fourth Nanak. 4. 2. 4.
