Note: In this Shabad the fifth Guru says one who takes Naam/Divine virtues and commands as support/guide for life, s/he never succumbs to vices. Naam is within and the guru refreshes the mind to remain aware of Naam. The guru’s teachings are recounted in Sadhsangat, the holy congregation.
Sāḏẖsang har amriṯ pījai. Nā jī▫o marai na kabhū cẖẖījai. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Vaddhans-u. (Saadhsang-i) in holy congregation, we (peejai = drink) recount (amrit-u) the life-giving Naam/virtues of (har-i) the Almighty – and learn to emulate them.
Then (jeeo = soul) the mind does not (marai = dies) succumb to vices, as it is (na kab-hoo) never (chheejai) weakened – as it has support of Naam. 1.
vadbẖāgī gur pūrā pā▫ī▫ai. Gur kirpā ṯe parabẖū ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
It is (vaddbhaagi) with good fortune that (poora) the perfect guru (paaeeai) is found.
And (tey) with (kirpa) kindness of the guru to guide, one (dhiaaeeai) pays attention to virtues and commands of (prabhoo) the Master. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.
Raṯan javāhar har māṇak lālā. Simar simar parabẖ bẖa▫e nihālā. ||2||
Virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty present within are like (Ratan, Javaahar, Maanak, Laala) precious stones – valuable as guide for life.
(Simar-i simar-i) by ever remembering (prabh) the Master one (bhaey) remains (nihaala) happy – by remembering them one refrains from vices, and does not suffer. 2.
Jaṯ kaṯ pekẖa▫o sāḏẖū sarṇā. Har guṇ gā▫e nirmal man karṇā. ||3||
(Jat kat) wherever I am I (peykhau = see) look for (sarna = sanctuary) guidance of (saadhoo) the guru.
And as taught by him, I (gaaey = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty, to (nirmal karna) purify (man-u) the mind – shed vices. 3.
Gẖat gẖat anṯar merā su▫āmī vūṯẖā. Nānak nām pā▫i▫ā parabẖ ṯūṯẖā. ||4||6||
(Suaami) the Master of (meyra = my) all (vootthaa) dwells in (ghatt ghatt) every mind/body.
But (naam-u) the Master (paaiaa) is found within, when (prabh-u) the Master (tootthaa = pleased) bestows grace, says the fifth Nanak. 4. 6.
