Rāg āsā mėhlā 3 asatpaḏīā gẖar 8 kāfī.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Aasa, (asttpadeeaa) compositions of eight stanzas (ghar-u 8) to be sung to the eighth beat, as Kaafi musical measure.

Gur ṯe sāʼnṯ ūpjai jin ṯarisnā agan bujẖāī. Gur ṯe nām pāīai vadī vadiāī. ||1||

The world is restless; (Saa’nt-i) peace (oopjai) comes (tey = from) by following (gur = guru) the guru’s teachings (jin-i) who (bujhaaee) extinguishes (agan-i) the fire of (trisna) desires.
This happens by receiving – awareness of – (naam-u) Divine commands (paaiai) is imparted (tey) by the guru; this is his (vaddi) great (vaddiaaee) virtue. 1.

Ėko nām cẖeṯ mere bẖāī. Jagaṯ jalanḏā ḏekẖ kai bẖaj pae sarṇāī. ||1|| rahāo.

(Merey) my (bhaaee) brethren, (cheyt-i) remember (naam-u) virtues and commands of (eyko = one) the One Master – and conform to them.
(Deykh-i kai) seeing (jagat-u) the world (jalanda) burning, – with the fire of craving and jealousy – I (bhaj-i paey = ran) placed myself in (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience of the Almighty. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Gur ṯe giān ūpjai mahā ṯaṯ bīcẖārā. Gur ṯe gẖar ḏar pāiā bẖagṯī bẖare bẖandārā. ||2||

(Giaan-u) spiritual knowledge (oopjai = emanates) is received (tey) from the guru and (beechaara) contemplating (maha) the great (tat-u) essence, i.e. Naam/Divine commands.
(Tey) from, i.e. with guidance of, the guru, one (paaia) finds (ghar-u dar-u = house and gate) the abode of the Almighty within; IT’s (bhandaara) storehouses are (bharey) full of (bhagti) devotion i.e. the Master IT-self motivates one to devotion. 2.

Gurmukẖ nām ḏẖiāīai būjẖai vīcẖārā. Gurmukẖ bẖagaṯ salāh hai anṯar sabaḏ apārā. ||3||

One who (boojhai) understands, (veechaara) contemplates and (dhiaaeeai) pays attention to/obeys (naam-u) Divine commands (gurmukh-i) with the guru.
(Gurmukh- i) the guru guides on (salaah) praising (apaara) the Infinite Master (bhagat-i) with devotion, by which (sabad-u = Word) commands of (apaara) the Infinite are understood (antar-i) within – to live by. 3.

Gurmukẖ sūkẖ ūpjai ḏukẖ kaḏe na hoī. Gurmukẖ haumai mārīai man nirmal hoī. ||4||

(Gurmukh-i) by following the guru’s teachings one – refrains from transgressions and – (oopjai = comes) experiences (sookh-u) peace; s/he (kadey na) never (hoee) suffers (dukh-u) distress.
(Gurmukh-i) the guru’s teachings help (maareeai = kill) dissolve (haumai) ego and (man-u) the mind (hoee) is thus (nirmal) cleansed – does not harbour other ideas. 4.

Saṯgur miliai āp gaiāṯaribẖavaṇ sojẖī pāī. Nirmal joṯ pasar rahī joṯī joṯ milāī. ||5||

(Miliai) by finding (satigur-i) the true guru – and following his teachings – (aap-u = self) ego (gaiaa) leaves and one (sojhi hoee) becomes conscious of the Master of (tribhavan – three words) the universe, within.
(Niramal) the pristine (jot-i) Light – the Supreme Soul – (pasar rahi = pervades) is present within and without; by remembering IT, (joti) the human soul (milaai = mixes) merges in (jot-i) in the Supreme Soul i.e. one is absorbed in the Almighty. 5.

Pūrai gur samjẖāiā maṯ ūṯam hoī. Anṯar sīṯal sāʼnṯ hoe nāme sukẖ hoī. ||6||

When (poorai) the perfect guru (samjhaaia = causes to understand) enlightens, (mat-i) the mind (ootam hoee – becomes sublime) is cleansed – gives up other ideas. (Antar-u) the inner-self (hoey) becomes (seetal-u) cool and (saant-i) at peace; One who conforms (naamey) to Naam/Divine virtues and commands (sukh-u hoee) has comfort. 6.

Pūrā saṯgur ṯāʼn milai jāʼn naḏar kareī. Kilvikẖ pāp sabẖ katīah fir ḏukẖ bigẖan na hoī. ||7||

(Jaa’n) when the Almighty (nadar kareyee) bestows grace, (taa’n) then one (milai) finds and follows the (poora) perfect guru. By following his teachings, (kilvikh paap) wrongdoings (katteeah-i = are cut) are avoided, and (phir-i) then there is no (dukh-u) distress or (bighan-u) impediment to union with the Creator. 7.

The Almighty has keeps (vaddiaaeeaa) glories in (aapani) own (hath-i) in IT’s hands and (dey) gives to those whom IT (laaey = engages) motivates to live (naamey) by Divine virtues and commands.
When (nidhaan-u) the treasure of Naam (vasia) abides (man-i) in the mind one (paaey) obtains (vaddiaaee) glory, says third Nanak. 8. 4. 26.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Aasa. (Merey) my (bhaai) brother, if (too’n) you (sun-i) listen to, (man) believe and (vasaaey = cause to abide) keep Divine commands (mann-i) in mind, the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (aaey) comes and (milai) meets i.e. reveals IT-self within.
Ever (kar-i = do) practice (sachi = true) sincere (bhagat-i) devotion – live by Divine virtues and commands (chit-u laaee) focussing the mind (sachai) on the Eternal. 1.

If (too’n) you (dhiaaey) pay attention to/obey (naam-u) commands of (eko) the One Almighty, you will (paavah-i = obtain) experience (sukh-u) peace, (meyrey) my (bhaaee) brother.
(Vadi) great (vadiaaee) glory – by way of being accepted for union with the Master – comes (door-i kar-i = putting away) by giving up (haumai) ego and (dooja = other) other ideas then obeying the Almighty. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell and contemplate this.

(Sur-i nar) gods, (mun-i jan) sages (lochdey) long (no) for (is-u) this (bhagti) devotion – by which they can unite with the Almighty, but it (na jaaey) cannot be (paaee) imbibed (vin-u) without guidance of (satigur) the true guru.
(Pandit) scholars of scriptures and (jotiki) astrologers (parrdey) read the texts but (tin) they do not (paaey) obtain (boojh-i) understanding – of devotion, without the guru. 2.

Āpai thai sabẖ rakẖion kicẖẖ kahaṇ na jāī. Āpe ḏee so pāīai gur būjẖ bujẖāī. ||3||

The Almighty (rakhion-u) keeps (sabh-u) everything (thai) with (aapai) IT’s own Self; (kichh-u na) nothing (jaai) can be (kahan-u) said, i.e. no one can demand anything

We (paaeeai) receive (s-u) that which the Master (aapey) IT-self (dey-i) gives – as deserved; this (boojh) understanding is (bujhaaee = caused to understand) given (gur-i) by the guru. 3.

Jīa janṯ sabẖṯis ḏe sabẖnā kā soī. Manḏā kis no ākẖīai je ḏūjā hoī. ||4||

(Sabh-i) all (jee-a jant) creatures (tis dey = its) created by the Creator, and (soee) IT is the Master (ka) of (sabhna) all.
We can (aakheeai) call (kis no = whom?) no one (manda) bad; we could if anyone (hoee) is created (dooja) by someone else. 4.==================

Iko hukam varaṯḏā ekā sir kārā. Āp bẖavālī ḏiṯīan anṯar lobẖ vikārā. ||5||

(Iko) only one (hukam-u) writ (vartdaa) runs over the whole world and there is only one (kaara/sirkaara) authority (sir-i = on the head) over every one.
The Creator IT-self (bhavaali diteean-u) leads some people astray by creating (vikaara) vices like (lobh-u) greed (antar-i) in their minds – by which people go their own way. 5.

Ik āpe gurmukẖ kīṯian būjẖan vīcẖārā. Bẖagaṯ bẖī onā no bakẖsīan anṯar bẖandārā. ||6||

The Master (aapey) IT-self (keetian-u) makes (ik = one type) some (gurmukh-i) to follow the guru’s teachings, which they (veechaara) contemplate and (boojhan-i) understand.
And (bhi) also (bakhseean-u) grants (no) to (onaa) them (bhanddaara = store) the treasure of (bhagat-i) devotion (antar-i = within) in their minds. 6.

(No) for (giaania = knowledgeable) those enlightened by the guru’s teachings, (hoee) get (sojhi) awareness there is only (sach-u) the Eternal Master (sabh-u = all) everywhere.
(Oey) they do not (bhulanhi) go astray by (bhulaaey) being misled (kisai dey) by anyone; they know – the path to – (soi) the One (sach-u) Eternal Master i.e. they live by Divine virtues and commands. 7.

Gẖar mėh pancẖvaraṯḏe pancẖe vīcẖārī. Nānak bin saṯgur vas na āvnĥī nām haumai mārī. ||8||5||27||

(Panch) the five vices – of lust, wrath, greed, attachment to the transitory world-play and vanity – are present (ghar mah-i = in the house) in the mind of the enlightened, but they are controlled (veechaari) by contemplating how they work.
They (na aava-i) do not come (vas-i) under control (bin-u) without (satigur) the true guru’s guidance to conform (naam-i) to Naam/ Divine virtues and commands which (maari) kills (haumai) ego – the root cause of vices. 8. 5. 27.

———————————–

Note: Naam/Divine virtues and commands or the directions given by the Almighty Creator to the soul are present within; one needs to contemplate within to find God rather than wander outside. This is the message of the third Guru in this Shabad.

Āsā mėhlā 3. Gẖarai anḏar sabẖ vath hai bāhar kicẖẖ nāhī. Gur parsādī pāīai anṯar kapat kẖulāhī. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Aasa. (Sabh) every (vath-u) thing, i.e. the Almighty and Naam – is present (andar-i) in (gharai = house) the mind; (kichh-u naahi) nothing is found by searching (baahar-i) outside.
One finds (paaeeai) find the Master (anatar-i) within when (kapatt) the door – to the mind – (khulaahi) is opened, i.e. when one looks within – (parsaadi) with the grace/guidance of the guru. 1.

(Har-i) the Almighty (paaeeai) is found (tey) with guidance of (satigur) the true guru, (bhaaee) o brother – my friends.
(Nidhaan-u) the treasure of awareness of (naam-u) Divine virtues is (antar-i) within and (deeaa dikhaaee) is shown by (poorai) the perfect (satigur-i) true guru – by clearing the mind of other ideas. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Har kā gāhak hovai so lae pāe raṯan vīcẖārā. Anḏar kẖolai ḏib ḏisat ḏekẖai mukaṯ bẖandārā. ||2||

If one (hovai) be (gaahak = buyer) a seeker of (har-i) the Almighty, (so) that person (laey) receives; s/he (paaey) finds (ratan-u) the jewel – the Almighty – (veechaara) by contemplating within.
S/he (kholai) opens (andar-u) the inner-self, and (distt-i/dristti = sight) with the eye of (dib = knowledge) enlightenment, (deykhai) sees/obtains (bhandaara = store) the treasure of Naam for (mukt-i) freedom from vices in life, and from cycles of reincarnation. 2.

There (hah-i) are (aneyk) innumerable (mahal) mansions (andar-i) within; in which abide (jeeo) Naam (karey vaseyra) abides, i.e. Naam is present in everyone.
One who understands, (paaisi) shall obtain (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of the wish to find – the Almighty – (chindia) longed for in (man) the mind; (phir-i) then there (hoey) is no (pheyra = return) rebirth for him/her. 3.

Pārkẖīā vath samāl laī gur sojẖī hoī. Nām paḏārath amul sā gurmukẖ pāvai koī. ||4||

With (sojhi) understanding received from the guru, (paarkheeaa = appraisers) discerning minds (samaal-i laee = take possession) find (vath-u = substance) God.
(Padaarath-u = substance) awareness of (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands is (amul-u) priceless; (koee) some (gurmukh-i) one who follows the guru’s teachings (paavai) obtains (sa) that. 4.

Bāhar bẖāle so kiā lahai vath gẖarai anḏar bẖāī. Bẖarme bẖūlā sabẖ jag firai manmukẖ paṯ gavāī. ||5||

(Bhaaee) o brother, (vath-u = the real thing) the Almighty is (andar-i) within, one who (bhaaley) searches (baahar-u) outside, (kiaa) what can (s-u = that) s/he (lahai) find i.e. cannot find God.
(Manmukh-i) a self-willed person, (bhoola) led astray (bharmey) by delusion (phirai) wanders over (sabh-u) the whole (jag-u) world – but cannot achieve union with the Creator – and thus (gavaaee) loses (pat-i) honour, i.e. is frustrated. 5.

Gẖar ḏar cẖẖode āpṇā par gẖar jẖūṯẖā jāī. Cẖorai vāʼngū pakṛīai bin nāvai cẖotā kẖāī. ||6||

(Jhoottha = false) an ignorant person (chhoddey) leaves his/her (aapna) own (ghar-u dar-u) abode and goes (par ghar-i) to another’s house i.e. forgets the Almighty and looks to gods/goddesses to fulfil his/her desires.
Such a person (pakrreeai) is caught and treated (vaangoo) like (chorai) a thief, (bin-u) without practice of (naavai) Divine virtues and commands; s/he (chotta khaee = is hit) suffers ignominy – s/he cannot fulfil the purpose of human life to unite with the Creator. 6.

On the other hand, (jinhi) those who (jaata) know their own (ghar-u) mind i.e. discover the Almighty within – live by IT’s commands; (sey) they are (sukhee-ey) at peace, (bhaaee) o brethren.
They (pachhaania) recognize (brahm-u) the Creator (antar-i) within by (vaddiaaee) virtue/guidance of the guru. 7.

When the Almighty (daan karey = gives alms) is kind, (aapey) IT-self (dey-i bujhaaee) gives awareness of IT’s Naam/virtues and commands; (kis-u) whom do we ask i.e. there is no need ask anyone else.
O human being, (too’n) you should (dhiaaey) pay attention to (naam-u) Divine commands to (paaee) receive (sobha) glory at (dar-i = court) place (sachey) of the Eternal i.e. will be accepted for union with the Creator, says third Nanak. 8. 6. 28.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Aasa. O (bhaai) brethren, when one (pachaania = recognises) knows (aapai aap-i) the self, (saad-u) the taste of this elixir is (sweet) i.e. finding the Almighty within is satisfying.
(Jinha) those who (bhaaee = like) love (saacho) the Eternal Master, they (chaakhiai = taste) drink (har-i ras-i) the Divine elixir – experience the Almighty within – and (bhaey) become (mukat-u) free from attachment to the world-play, and ultimately cycles of reincarnation. 1.

(Jeeo) the revered (har-i) Master is (nirmal nirmala) pristine and (vaasa) abides (man-i) in a mind (nirmal = pure) free of other ideas.
If we (saalaaheeai) praise – and live by – IT’s virtues (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance, we can be (udaasa) detached from (bikhia) vices while being (maah-i) in them – the world-play. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

O (bhaai) brethren, (aap-u) the self cannot (jaapa-i) be known (bin-u) except (sabdai) by the word – the guru’s guidance; otherwise (sabh = all) people remain (andhi) blind – being engrossed in the world-play.
(Ghatt-i) the mind who (chaanana) gets the light (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance; conformance to (naam-u) Divine commands is (sakhaaee) helpful (ant-i) in the end. 2.

Those who are aware of Naam, they (vartadey) conduct themselves (naamey hi) only by (naam-i) commands of the Creator; Everything (vartaara) happens (naamey) by Naam, the natural laws.
They have Naam (antar-i) within and Naam (muhk-i = in mouth) on the lips; they (veechaara) contemplate (naamey) Naam (sabad-i = by the word) as taught by the guru. 3.

Nām suṇīai nām mannīai nāme vadiāī. Nām salāhe saḏā saḏā nāme mahal pāī. ||4||

We should (suneeai) listen to and (manneeai) obey Naam; one obtains (vaddiaaee) glory by conforming (naamey) to Naam.
One who (sadaa sadaa) forever (salaahey) praises and emulates Naam/Divine virtues, s/he (paaee = finds) gets to (mahal-u = palace) abode, i.e. merges with (naamey) the Almighty. 4.

Nāme hī gẖat cẖānṇā nāme sobẖā pāī. Nāme hī sukẖ ūpjai nāme sarṇāī. ||5||

(Ghatt-i) the mind gets (chaanana) enlightened with awareness of (naamey) by Naam; and living (naamey) by Naam one (paaee) gets (sobha =fame) a good name.
It is (naamey hi) through Naam alone that (sukh-u) peace (oopjai) is attained; we should seek (sarnaaee) sanctuary (naamey) of the Almighty. 5.

Bin nāvai koe na mannīai manmukẖ paṯ gavāī. Jam pur bāḏẖe mārīah birthā janam gavāī. ||6||

We should (maniai) have faith in (koey na) nothing, i.e. no other ideas, (bin-u) except obeying (naavai) Naam/Divine commands; (manmukh-i) a self-willed person falls prey to vices and (gavaaee) loses honour –by not being accepted for union with the Creator.
His/her soul is (baadhey = tied) detained (pur-i = town) in jurisdiction/custody of (jam) Divine justice and (maareeah-i = beaten) brutalised; his/her (janam-u = birth) human birth – which is an opportunity or union with the Creator (birtha gavaaee) is wasted in vain. 6.

Nāmai kī sabẖ sevā karai gurmukẖ nām bujẖāī. Nāmhu hī nām mannīai nāme vadiāī. ||7||

(Sabh = all) every one (seyva karai = serves) complies (naamai) with Naam/Divine commands; (naam-u) Naam is (bujhaaee) understood (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance.
It is (naamh-u) through Divine virtues that one (maneeai) has faith (naam-u) in the Almighty; (naamey) living by virtues brings (vaddiaaee) glory. 7.

Jis no ḏevai ṯis milai gurmaṯī nām bujẖāī. Nānak sabẖ kicẖẖ nāvai kai vas hai pūrai bẖāg ko pāī. ||8||7||29||

Only (jis) one to whom, the Almighty (deyvai) gives, (tis-u) that person (milai) obtains Naam (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance.
(Sabh kichh) everything is (vas-i) under the control (naavai) of the Almighty, and (ko) one (poorai bhaag-i) with good fortune (paai) obtains awareness of Divine commands, says third Nanak. 8. 7. 29.
