Composition of (mahla 4) the fourth Guru in Raga Natt Naarain, to be sung (parrtaal) in varying beats. Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.
Mere man sev safal har gẖāl. Le gur pag ren ravāl. Sabẖ ḏaliḏ bẖanj ḏukẖ ḏāl. Har ho ho ho naḏar nihāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.
My (man) mind, (seyv = serve) carry out (ghaal = toil/tasks) commands of (har-i) the Almighty, and make your life (saphal) fruitful, i.e. find the Almighty within. For this, (ley) take (reyn, ravaal) dust of (pag) the feet of, i.e. follow guidance of, the guru
This way you will (bhanj-i) destroy (sabh-i) all (daalid/daridar) misery and (daal/dal = grind/destroy) end (dukh) the agony – of remaining separated from – the Almighty, because (har-i) the Almighty (ho ho = is) bestows (nadar-i = sight) grace and (nihaal) happiness on those who live by Divine commands. 1.
(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

The body/mind is (grihu = house) the abode (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty who (aap-i) IT-self (savaario = transforms) improves it, i.e. motivates one to find Divine virtues within and emulate them; (har-i) the Almighty is epitome of (rang) joy and IT’s (mahal) palace is decorated with(laal laal) jewels, i.e. IT’s presence makes one aware of Divine virtues and (rang) creates joy, (har-i) the Almighty should be (laal laal laal) lovingly remembered in thought, word and deed.
(Ham) I (kee-ee = made) took (gur) the guru (baseetthi) as the go-between (ki = of) with the Almighty, i.e. followed instructions of the guru; then the Almighty (kari = did, kripa = kindness) bestowed grace and (aaio) came to (aap-i = of self) IT’s (grih-i) home – my body/mind; and (ham) I (bhaee) became (nihaal x 4 times) happy to lead life by the four blessings, namely Dharam = dutifulness, Arth = economic well-being, Kaam = fulfilment of desires/aspirations, Mokh = emancipation from separation from the Almighty and hence of rebirth. 1.

I (paaee) received (khabar-i = news) awareness of how (har-i) the Almighty (aavtey) comes to the mind, (gur-i) from the guru; my (man-i) mind and (tan-i) body (bhaey) were (aando aanand) full of joy when I (suney) heard (laal laal) the beloved (har-i) the Almighty (aavtey) was coming.
When (har-i har-i) the Almighty (miley) met me, I (bhaey) was (galtaan) lost in ecstasy and became (nihaal nihaal) highly joyful, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 2. 1. 7.

It (lahanti = removes) obviates commission of (sabh) all (kilbikh) transgressions and (paap) wrong-doings. This (ho ho ho) happens to those in whose (likhat = writing) destiny it is so (likhanti) written. 1.

One (jin-i) who (chaakhiaa) tastes (ras-u) the elixir of, i.e. experiences the pleasure of, (akth) the inexpressible (kathaa = story) presence of (har-i) Almighty, (tis) that (jan) person’s liking for (sabh) all other (bhookh = appetite) things (lahanti) is removed, i.e. s/he is not satisfied with things like rituals and worship of gods/goddesses.
(Jan) seekers of the Almighty (triptey = satiated) are happy (sun-i) listening to – and emulating – (kathaa) virtues of the Almighty; they (jap-i) remember and emulate (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating virtues of the Almighty and become like (har-i) the Almighty, says fourth Nanak. 2. 2. 8.
