Being present (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every body/mind, (prabh-u) the Almighty

(saareeai = has news) knows the state of everyone and (aap-i) IT-self (pratipaaley) looks after;

And, does not (visaareeai) forget (tis-u) that person (jis) in whose (man-i) mind (aap-i = self) IT (vuttha) abides i.e. is remembered. 2.

(Jo kichh) whatever IT (karey) does (s-u) that is (aap-i) by the Self, (aapan bhaania) at IT’s own will, i.e. everything happens by Divine commands/laws of nature.

The Almighty (jaania) has been known as (sahaaee) helpful to (bhagtaa) the devotees (jug-i jug-i) through the ages, i.e. has always supported those who live by Divine virtues and commands. 3.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Aasa

(Kia) why have you (visaar-i) forgotten (naam) the Almighty – i.e. do not remember Divine virtues and commands – and (sovah-i = sleep) have lost awareness of what You are here for – o you (gaafal) lazy and (gahilia) indifferent person.

In (it) this (dariaaey) stream – of temptations of the world-play – (kitee’n) countless people are (va’nnjnan vahdia) being washed away by its currents – so be alert. 1.

Bohithṛā har cẖaraṇ man cẖaṛ langẖī▫ai. Āṯẖ pahar guṇ gā▫e sāḏẖū sangī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

The way (langheeai = get across) to overcome the temptations is (charr-i) to board (bohitha) the ship of (charan-i) feet of (har-i) the Almighty i.e. to serve by living according to Divine virtues and commands.

To learn this, we should (gaaey = sing) remember (gun) virtues of the Almighty (sangeeai) in the company of (saadhu) the seekers (aatth pahar) day and night. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

A person may (bhogah-i) enjoy (aneyk) numerous (bhog) objects of pleasure, but s/he is (su’nnjnjia) empty (vin) without (naavai/naam) remembering the Almighty i.e. the soul cannot get real peace without awareness of Divine virtues and commands.

(Bina) without (bhagat-i) devotion to (har-i) the Almighty i.e. living by Divine virtues and commands, one (mar-i mar-i = keeps dying) keeps falling prey to vices in the world-play and (runnia) wails. 2.

The mortal wears (kaparr) good clothes, (bhog) eats good food, applies (sugandh) fragrances and (maalna) rubs (mardan) scented pastes on the body.

But (tan) the body is (sarpar) certain (chaalna = go) to die, and (bin) without (simran) remembrance of the Almighty (tan = body) the soul is treated as (chhaar-u) dust i.e. rejected for union with the Almighty. 3.

(Virlai) some rare person (peykhia = sees) realizes how (maha) greatly (bikham-u) difficult it is – to escape being born again and again into – (sansaar) the world i.e. to overcome temptations in life and escape reincarnation.

(Chhoottan-u) freedom from this is possible by being (saran-i = sanctuary) in the care and obedience of (har-i) the Almighty, but only one in whose (leykh = writing) destiny (leykhia) it is so written escapes, says Nanak the fifth. 4. 8. 110.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Aasa (Koey na) no one/nothing (sang-i) remains with (kis hi) any one – forever; so (kaahey) why (garbeeai) take pride – in possessions, relations or physical beauty or strength

We can (tarbeeai = swim) get across (bhaujal-u) the world-ocean – i.e. overcome lures and not be born again – is to make (naam-u) commands of (eyk-u) the One Almighty (aadhaar-u) the mainstay for life. 1.

, (Meyra) my (man-u) mind (dheerey) is soothed (deykh-i) seeing (darsano) vision (tumaara) of You – i.e. by experiencing Your presence within me. 1.

(Raaj = kingdom) power and (maal) wealth are (janjaal) entanglements do not (gano) count for (kitai) any (kaaj-i) purpose – in the hereafter.

Make (keertan) praising (har-i) the Almighty i.e. living by Divine virtues and commands (aadhaar-u) the mainstay; this is (nihchal = unshakable) the lasting (dhano) wealth – which accompanies the soul here in life and after death. 2.

(Jetey = as many) whatever (rang = colours) forms of (maaia) the world-play are, they are (teyt = that many) all (pachhaavia = shadows) transitory.

(Gurmukh-i) those who follow the guru’s teachings (gaavia = sing) remember and live by (naam) Divine virtues and commands, (nidhaan) the treasure of (sukh) peace and comfort – here and in the hereafter. 3.

You, my (khasam) Master are (aas) the hope and (bharosa) confidence of my (jearey) mind, says Nanak the fifth. 4. 9. 111.
