Mājẖ mėhlā 5.

Bani of the fifth Guru n Rag Majh.

Man ṯan raṯā rām pi▫āre.   Sarbas ḏījai apnā vāre.   Āṯẖ pahar govinḏ guṇ gā▫ī▫ai bisar na ko▫ī sāsā jī▫o. ||1||

When the mind and body are imbued with the Beloved Master; one would give every thing to remain in that state..

In this state one remembesr the virtues of the Master day and night, not forgetting even for a moment. 1.

So▫ī sājan mīṯ pi▫ārā.   Rām nām sāḏẖsang bīcẖārā.   Sāḏẖū sang ṯarījai sāgar katī▫ai jam kī fāsā jī▫o. ||2||

Such companions and friends are dear to me, who get together in holy congregation to reflect on Naam,

It is through holy company hat we get across the World Ocean and ovoid the noose of (Jamm) the messengers of death. 2.

Note*: There are certain things that the humans wish to have and others to avoid. The next verse says that this can be achieved by reminding ourselves of and complying with Divine commands. The wishes may include to achieve ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ (Chaar Padarath) the four potentials of Dharam (being able to do what is right), Arth (economic well being), Kaam (fulfillment of desires) and Mokh (release from bondage of vices and reincarnation). People are also enamored of ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ (Paarjaat) a tree in Hindu mythology that fulfills desires. The right thinking people also like to keep away from the vices like lust, anger, greed, attachment and vanity. These are explained in the verse.

Cẖār paḏārath har kī sevā.   Pārjāṯ jap alakẖ abẖevā.   Kām kroḏẖ kilbikẖ gur kāte pūran ho▫ī āsā jī▫o. ||3||
The four potentials are achieved by obeying Divine commands; reflection on the virtues of God who is otherwise indescribable and mysterious, is getting (Parjaat) the wish fulfilling tree.
Actually all wishes are fulfilled when one follows the guru and gives up vices of Lust and anger. 3.

Pūran bẖāg bẖa▫e jis parāṇī.   Sāḏẖsang mile sārangpāṇī.   Nānak nām vasi▫ā jis anṯar parvāṇ girsaṯ uḏāsā jī▫o. ||4||40||47||

It is with good fortune that one joins Sadhsangat in order to find (Sarang Paan = who provides rain drop to the yearning rain bird) God, the wish-fulfilling Master.

Any one in whose mind God abides, breaks attachment to things transitory, while leading a householder’s life, and becomes acceptable to God. 4. 40. 47.

Simraṯ nām riḏai sukẖ pā▫i▫ā.   Kar kirpā bẖagṯīʼn paragtā▫i▫ā.   Saṯsang mil har har japi▫ā binse ālas rogā jī▫o. ||1||

Reflecting on Divine virtues brings (Sukh) peace of mind; this is what the devotees aachieve with God’s grace.

Participation in Sadhsangat helps in giving up the affliction of (Aalas = laziness) indifference, and to remember God. 1.

Jā kai garihi nav niḏẖ har bẖā▫ī.   Ŧis mili▫ā jis purab kamā▫ī.   Gi▫ān ḏẖi▫ān pūran parmesur parabẖ sabẖnā galā jogā jī▫o. ||2||

God, the treasure house of all virtues, abides in the minds of those with past good deeds.

They try to know and reflect on the virtues of the omnipotent perfect Master. 2.

Note*: Some of the Divine virtues are as given in the next two verses.

Kẖin mėh thāp uthāpanhārā.   Āp ikanṯī āp pasārā.   Lep nahī jagjīvan ḏāṯe ḏarsan diṯẖe lahan vijogā jī▫o. ||3||

God can instantly create and destroy; is the Creator as well as the creation.

God is the life giver of the universe, but untouched by it; (Vijog) sepration for God ends when realized within. 3.

Ancẖal lā▫e sabẖ sisat ṯarā▫ī.   Āpṇā nā▫o āp japā▫ī.   Gur bohith pā▫i▫ā kirpā ṯe Nānak ḏẖur sanjogā jī▫o. ||4||41||48||

God motivates people to remember and emulate Naam, Divine virtues; and (Anchal laaey = attaching to the garment, giving helping hand) bestowing grace,  saves every one.

Guru is the ship to take us across but is found by Divine grace; (Sanjog) the association is approved by (Dhur = highest point) the Divine. 4. 41. 48.

So▫ī karṇā jė āp karā▫e.   Jithai rakẖai sā bẖalī jā▫e.   So▫ī si▫āṇā so paṯivanṯā hukam lagai jis mīṯẖā jī▫o. ||1||

We do what God makes us do; any place where God keeps us is good for us.

One who remains happy in God’s will is considered wise and receives honor with God. 1.

Sabẖ paro▫ī ikaṯ ḏẖāgai.   Jis lā▫e la▫e so cẖarṇī lāgai.   Ūʼnḏẖ kaval jis ho▫e pargāsā ṯin sarab niranjan dīṯẖā jī▫o. ||2||

The universe is controlled by the Creator like the thread controls the beads of a rosary.

Only those whom God motivates engage in Divine service.

(The way a drooping lotus flower is revived by water) a withering mind is revitalized when it receives enlightenment; it then finds the impeccable Master within. 2.

Ŧerī mahimā ṯūʼnhai jāṇėh.   Apṇā āp ṯūʼn āp pacẖẖāṇėh.   Ha▫o balihārī sanṯan ṯere jin kām kroḏẖ lobẖ pīṯẖā jī▫o. ||3||

O God You alone know Your virtues; You alone know what You are.

I adore your devotees who overcoming lust, anger and greed, get to know about You. 3.

Ŧūʼn nirvair sanṯ ṯere nirmal.   Jin ḏekẖe sabẖ uṯrėh kalmal.   Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e ḏẖi▫ā▫e jīvai binsi▫ā bẖaram bẖa▫o ḏẖīṯẖā jī▫o. ||4||42||49||

O God You are above all and hence without enmity; Your devotees are free of vices; in their company all wrongdoings are given up.

I live in remembrance of your virtues; this banishes all delusion and fear resulting from (Dheetha) obstinate wrongdoings. 4. 42. 49.

Jẖūṯẖā mangaṇ je ko▫ī māgai.   Ŧis ka▫o marṯe gẖaṛī na lāgai.   Pārbarahm jo saḏ hī sevai so gur mil nihcẖal kahṇā. ||1||

One who asks for benedictions of transitory nature, (dies) succumbs to temptations instantly

One who continuously remembers Divine virtues in the company of the guru, instead asks for the Eternal. 1.

Parem bẖagaṯ jis kai man lāgī.   Guṇ gāvai an▫ḏin niṯ jāgī.   Bāh pakaṛ ṯis su▫āmī melai jis kai masṯak lahṇā. ||2||

One in loving devotion of the Master is ever alert; s/he sings and lives by Divine virtues.
God (Lehna) owes a debt to such a person and (holds his/her hand) helps to unite with the Self. 2.

Cẖaran kamal bẖagṯāʼn man vuṯẖe.   viṇ parmesar sagle muṯẖe.   Sanṯ janāʼn kī ḏẖūṛ niṯ bāʼncẖẖėh nām sacẖe kā gahṇā. ||3||

The devotees think of (the lotus feet of) serving the Master; but all those who forget God are (Muthe) lured by temptations.

Let us seek (the lotus feet of) to serve the devotees; they are known for emulation of Divine virtues; that is their is their (Gahna = ornament) adornment. 3.

Ūṯẖaṯ baiṯẖaṯ har har gā▫ī▫ai.   Jis simraṯ var nihcẖal pā▫ī▫ai.   Nānak ka▫o parabẖ ho▫e ḏa▫i▫ālā ṯerā kīṯā sahṇā. ||4||43||50||

Let us praise the Creator in whatever state we are; remembrance leads to union with the Eternal Master.

One receives grace and the mind finds peace in living by God’s will. 4. 43. 50.
