(Duteeaa = second) next (gur-i) the Guru (gaey) went to (jamun) Yamuna river and (keeaa = did, japan-u = praise, har-i har-i = God) gave discourses on Naam or Divine virtues and commands.

The authorities used to charge for ferrying people across the river, but now (jaagaati) the tax-collectors (miley) met and (dey) gave (bheytt) offerings, i.e. showed respect to the guru, and (langhaaey deeaa) ferried everyone who (pichhai = behind) followed (gur) the Guru, free.

Similarly those (jo) who (chaaley) walk on (panth-i, maarag) the path (bachan-i = by words) taught by (gur) the guru, (jam) the agent of Divine justice (jaagaati) tax-collector, i.e. who imposes punishment on wrong-doers, does not (aaiaa) come (neyrr-i) near, them.

(Sabh) all creatures of (sabh) the whole (jagat-u) world who (bolai) say guru guru, i.e. follow the guru, they (chhuttak-i gaiaa) remain free of the Jam by (laiaai = uttering, naaey = naam) remembering and practicing Naam as taught by the guru.

(Duteeaa = second) next (gur-i) the Guru (gaey) went to (jamun) Yamuna river and (keeaa = did, japan-u = praise, har-i har-i = God) gave discourses on Naam or Divine virtues and commands. 4.

(Triteeaa) thirdly, the Guru (aaey) came to (sursari) the river Ganga/Ganges, where (kautak-u) a wondrous (chalat-u = play) thing (bhaiaa) happened.

(Sabh) everyone there was (mohi) enchanted (deykh-i) seeing (darsan-u) the sight of, and listening to, (gur sant) the saint Guru; (kisa na) no one (laiaa = took) received not even (aaddh-u) a bit of (daam) money, i.e. no one went to Pandits/priests to ask to perform rituals and pay them.

(Kichh-u na = not any) not even (aaddh-u daam) a pittance (paiaa) was put in their (bolak/golak) money boxes; and (jagaateeaa = tax collectors) the priests (paee = happened) were (mohan mundan-i) dumb-founded.

They said, (bhaai) brethren, (kiaa) what can (ham) we (karah) do, (paas-i) from (kis-u) whom do we (maangah) ask, (sabh) all (bhaag-i) are running (paee = put, pichhai = behind) to (satigur) the true guru.

(Jaagaateeaa = tax collectors) the priests (siaanap = wisdom/reflection, kar-i = did) reflected and (dditthaa = saw) realized that no one would come to them as long as the guru was present there, so they (upaav = method) decided to (bhann-i = break) pick up (bolka) money boxes and (sabh-i) all (utth-i) got up and (gaiaa) left.

(Triteeaa) thirdly, the Guru (aaey) came to (sursari) the river Ganga/Ganges, and (kautak-u) a wondrous (chalat-u = play) thing (bhaiaa) happened. 5.

They (puchh-i) asked (gur-u) the great (satigur-u) true guru and he (keetaa = made, sahi = correct) made them to understand from the Smritis that (gur-u) the guru is embodiment of (govid/gobind = master of the world) the Almighty.

Simriṯ sāsṯar sabẖnī sahī kīṯā suk par▫hilāḏ sarīrām kar gur goviḏ ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.  Ḏehī nagar kot pancẖ cẖor vatvāre ṯin kā thā▫o thehu gavā▫i▫ā.

(Sabhni) everyone (sahi keeta) correctly understood that according to Smritis and Shastras, Suk/Sukhdev, Prahlad, and (sriraam-i) revered Rama of the Ramayana (dhiaaiaa) invoked (gur) the guru (kar-i = deeming) as (govid-u) the Almighty.

There are (panch) five (chor) thieves, (vattvaarey = highway robbers) vices – namely lust, anger, greed, attachment to the world-play and vanity (deyhi = body, nagar = town) within; the guru’s teachings (gavaaiaa = lost) removed (tin ka) their (thaau theyhu = place/habitation) presence, dispelled from their minds.

Kīrṯan purāṇ niṯ punn hovėh gur bacẖan Nānak har bẖagaṯ lahī.  Mil ā▫e nagar mahā janā gur saṯgur ot gahī. ||6||4||10||

Earlier there used to be (keertan) singing and discourses on the Puranas and importance of (punn) good deeds based on superstitions but now they (lahi) took/learnt (bhagat-i = devotion) living by virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty according to (bachn-i = through words) teachings of (gur) Guru Nanak.

(Mahaa = great) important (janaa) persons of (nagar) the town (mil-i) together (aaey) came and (gahi) took (ott) protection, i.e. paid obeisance, to (gur) the great (satigur-u) true Guru. 6. 4. 10.

Ŧukẖārī cẖẖanṯ mėhlā 5     Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Tukhaari, (chhant) song of love for the Almighty.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.

Gẖol gẖumā▫ī lālnā gur man ḏīnā.  Suṇ sabaḏ ṯumārā merā man bẖīnā.

O (laalna) Beloved Almighty, I (ghol-i) have dissolved my ego and (ghumaai = circumambulate) respectfully (deena = given) dedicated my (man-u) mind to You – with guidance – (gur-i) of the guru.

(Meyra) my (man-u) mind (bheenaa = rinsed) is happy (sun-i) to listen to, and obey, (tumaara) Your (sabad-u = word) commands – as made aware by the guru.

Ih man bẖīnā ji▫o jal mīnā lāgā rang murārā.  Kīmaṯ kahī na jā▫ī ṯẖākur ṯerā mahal apārā.

(Jiau) like (meena) the fish is happy to get in (jal) water, (ihu = this) my (man-u) mind is (bheena) happy (laaga) with Your (rang-u) love, o (muraara) Almighty.

(Teyra) Your (mahal-u = palace) Being is (apaara) infinite; (keemat-i = price) worth/extent of Your Naam, i.e. virtues and powers, (na jaaee) cannot be (kahan = told) estimated.

Sagal guṇā ke ḏāṯe su▫āmī bin▫o sunhu ik ḏīnā.  Ḏeh ḏaras Nānak balihārī jī▫aṛā bal bal kīnā. ||1||

O (suaami) Master, You are (daatey = giver) the source of (sagal) all (gunaa) virtues; please (sunhu) listen to (ik = one) this (binau) supplication of (deena) this poor seeker.

My (jeearra) soul (bal-i bal-i = sacrifice, keena = made) adores You, please (deyhu = give) grant (daras-u) vision, i.e. impart awareness of Your virtues and commands – so that I can live by them, says fifth Nanak. 1.

Ih ṯan man ṯerā sabẖ guṇ ṯere.  Kẖannī▫ai vañā ḏarsan ṯere.

(Ihu = this) my (tan-u) body and (man-u) mind/soul are (teyra = your) given by You; (sabh-i) all (gun = virtues) capabilities are (teyrey –your) in Your hands.

I (vanjna) am ready (khaneeai = be cut into pieces) to do anything You direct.

Ḏarsan ṯere suṇ parabẖ mere nimakẖ ḏarisat pekẖ jīvā.  Amriṯ nām sunījai ṯerā kirpā karahi ṯa pīvā.

(Sun-i = listen) this is my supplication: I shall do anything to obtain (teyrey) Your (darsan = sight) vision, i.e. awareness of Your virtues and commands; I (jeeva) am enlivened if You (peykh-i= see) cast (dristt-i = sight) glance of grace (nimakh) for a moment.

(Teyra) Your Naam (suneejai = heard) is known to (amrit) be like a life-giving elixir; when You (karah-i = do/show, kirpa = kindness) are kind to give, (ta) then I (peeva) drink the elixir, i.e. I can live by Your Naam when You graciously enable.

Ās pi▫āsī pir kai ṯā▫ī ji▫o cẖāṯrik būʼnḏere.  Kaho Nānak jī▫aṛā balihārī ḏeh ḏaras parabẖ mere. ||2||

Says the soul-wife: I (aas = wish, piaasi = thirsty) yearn (kai taai) for You, (pir) the Beloved, (jio) like (chaatrik) the rain-bird yearns (boondeyrey) for the drop of rain – to fall in its mouth.

Almighty, my (jeeaarra) soul (balihaari = is sacrifice) adores You, please (deyhu = give) grant me (daras-u) vision, i.e. grant me awareness of Your virtues and commands, (kahu = say) prays fifth Nanak. 2.

Ŧū sācẖā sāhib sāhu amiṯā.  Ŧū parīṯam pi▫ārā parān hiṯ cẖiṯā.

(Too) You are (saachaa) the Eternal (sahib-u) Master, (saahu = financier) rich (amita) beyond measure, i.e. source of unlimited virtues.

(Too) You are (piaara) the Beloved (preetam-u = dear husband) benevolent Master (hit = for) of my (praan) life and (chitaa) heart.

Parān sukẖ▫ḏāṯa gurmukẖ jāṯā sagal rang ban ā▫e.  So▫ī karam kamāvai parāṇī jehā ṯū furmā▫e.

You are (sukh-daataa = giver of comfort) the source of solace, and are (jaataa) known (gumukh-i) with the guru’s guidance; then (sagal) all (rang) joys (ban-i aaey = happen) are experienced – with You within.

(Praani) the creature (kamaavai) carries out (soi) those (karam) deeds (jeyha) as (too) You (phurmaaey = order) direct, i.e. You allotted the roles in life to the creatures and motivate them from within.

Jā ka▫o kirpā karī jagḏīsur ṯin sāḏẖsang man jiṯā. Kaho Nānak jī▫aṛā balihārī jī▫o pind ṯa▫o ḏiṯā. ||3||

Those (kau) to (ja) whom (kirpa) kindness (kar-i) is shown (jagdeesur-i= by master of the world) by the Almighty, – s/he is motivated to join (saadhsang-i) the holy congregation and learn to (jitaa) conquer his/her (man) mind, i.e. learns how not to fall prey to temptations.

(Tau) You (ditaa) gave (jeeo) the soul and (pindd-u) body; my (jeearraa) soul (balihaari = is sacrifice) adores You, says fifth Nanak. 3.

Nirguṇ rākẖ lī▫ā sanṯan kā saḏkā.  Saṯgur dẖāk lī▫ā mohi pāpī paṛ▫ḏā.

The Almighty (raakh-i leeaa) saved this (nirgun-u) virtue-less person (sadka) by grace/guidance of, i.e. by enabling to follow (santan = saints) the guru.

(Satigur-i) the true guru (ddhaak-i leeaa = covered) provided (parrdaa) curtain for, saved the reputation of (moh-i) me, (paapi) a wrong-doer, i.e. enabled me to be rid of transgressions.

Dẖākanhāre parabẖū hamāre jī▫a parān sukẖ▫ḏāṯe.  Abẖināsī abigaṯ su▫āmī pūran purakẖ biḏẖāṯe.

(Hamaarey) our/my (prabhoo) Master (ddhaakanhaarey) covers faults and is (sukhdaatey) the giver/source of solace for (jeea) soul/mind and (praan) life/body; Our (suaami) the Master is (abinaasi = imperishable) the Eternal, (abigat) formless and (pooran purakh) all-pervasive (bidhaatey) Creator.

(Tumaari) Your (ustat-i = praise) virtues (na jaaee) cannot be (kahan = said) counted; (kaun-u) who can (kahai) say as to (kad = when, ka = of) since when (too) You have existed.

(Daas-u = servant) humble fifth Nanak (balihaari = is sacrifice, kai = for) adores and prays for a (nimka) bit of awareness of (har-i) Divine (naam-u) virtues and commands (milai) is received. 4. 1. 11.
