Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 3 bibẖās   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the third Guru in raga Prabhaati, (bibhaas) to be sung at dawn.        Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.

Gur parsādī vekẖ ṯū har manḏar ṯerai nāl.  Har manḏar sabḏe kẖojī▫ai har nāmo leho samĥāl. ||1||

(Too) you should (veykh-u) see within (parsaadi = with grace) with guidance of (gur) the guru and you will find that (mandar-u = house) abode of (har-i) the Almighty is (naal-i) with (teyrai = your) you, i.e. your body is the abode of God. One should (khojeeai) search (har-i mandar-u = God’s abode) within (sabdey = with the word) with the guru’s guidance – to get awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands; and (leyhu samhaal-i = take care) keep (naamo) Naam of (har-i) the Almighty in mind. 1.

Man mere sabaḏ rapai rang ho▫e.   Sacẖī bẖagaṯ sacẖā har manḏar pargatī sācẖī so▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) my (man) mind the right (rang-u) colour (hoey) is obtained by (rapai) being dyed/imbued, i.e. true devotion develops (sabad-i = with the word) with awareness of Naam/Divine commands.

The body/mind of one who has (sachi) true (bhagat-i) devotion, is (sachaa) truly (har-i mandar-u) God’s abode; his/her (saachi = true) good (soey) reputation (pragtti) spreads everywhere. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Har manḏar ehu sarīr hai gi▫ān raṯan pargat ho▫e. Manmukẖ mūl na jāṇnī māṇas har manḏar na ho▫e. ||2||

(Eyhu) this (sarer-u) body (hai) is (har-i mandar-u) God’s abode; (ratan-i = jewel) Naam (pargatt-u = manifest, hoey = happens) is found within it (giaan-i = with knowledge) with guidance of the guru.

(Manmukh) self-willed persons – who do not follow the guru – do not (jaananee) know (mool-u = root) the fundamental thing and say (maanas-i) a person’s body (na hoey) is not (har-i mandar-u) God’s abode. 2.

Har manḏar har jī▫o sāji▫ā rakẖi▫ā hukam savār. Ḏẖur lekẖ likẖi▫ā so kamāvaṇā ko▫e na metaṇhār. ||3||

(Jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (saajiaa) created (har-i mandar-u = God’s abode) the human body and (rakhiaa) has kept it (savaar-i) equipped with (hukam-i = with commands) with Naam.

The commands (likhiaa) written/given (dhur-i = from source) by the Creator (su) that (kamaavna) is to be carried out; (koey na = not any) no one (meyttanhaar-u = capable to erase) can countermand those – anyone who disobeys, suffers. 3.

Sabaḏ cẖīnėh sukẖ pā▫i▫ā sacẖai nā▫e pi▫ār. Har manḏar sabḏe sohṇā kancẖan kot apār. ||4||

One who (cheenh-i) understands/obeys (sabad-u = the word) Divine commands – has no apprehensions and – (paaiaa) experiences (sukh-u) comfort/peace; s/he (piaar-u) loves (naaey = by naam) living by Naam (sachai) of the Eternal.

(Har-i mandar-u) the human body/a person becomes (sohna) beautiful/is respected (sabdey = with the word) by obedience to Naam; as if (kott-u) castle of (apaar) infinite (kanchan) gold, i.e. such a person receives respect here and in the hereafter. 4.

Har manḏar ehu jagaṯ hai gur bin gẖoranḏẖār.  Ḏūjā bẖā▫o kar pūjḏe manmukẖ anḏẖ gavār. ||5||

(Eyhu) this (jagat-u) world, i.e. the whole creation, is (har-i mandar-u) God’s abode; but (ghor = intense, andhaar = darkness – ignorance) it is not realized (bin-u) except with guidance of (gur) the guru.

(Manmukh = self-willed) those who do not follow the guru are (gavaar) uniformed and hence (andh = blind) oblivious of this; they (poojdey) worship (kar-i) with (bhaau) faith in (dooja = second) others, like gods/goddesses. 5.

Jithai lekẖā mangī▫ai ṯithai ḏeh jāṯ na jā▫e.  Sācẖ raṯe se ubre ḏukẖī▫e ḏūjai bẖā▫e. ||6||

The hereafter, (jithai) where (leykha) account of deeds (mangeeai) is asked, (deyh = body) physical strength/beauty or (jaat-i) caste/status does not (jaaey = go) accompany to impress help.

(Sey) those (ratey) imbued (saach-i = with truth) obedience to Naam, (ubrey) they are saved and merge with the Creator, but those with (bhaaey = love) faith (doojai = second) elsewhere (dukheeay) suffer, – remain in cycles of births and deaths. 6.

Har manḏar mėh nām niḏẖān hai nā būjẖėh mugaḏẖ gavār.  Gur parsādī cẖīnĥi▫ā har rākẖi▫ā ur ḏẖār. ||7||

(Nidhaan-u) the treasure of awareness of Naam/Divine commands (hai) is (mah-i) in (har-i mandar-u = God’s abode) in the mind, but (mugadh = foolish) ignorant (gavaar) unaware persons do not (boojhah-i = understand) realize.

One who (cheenhiaa) recognizes Naam/God within (parsaadi = with grace) with guidance of (gur) the guru, (raakhiaa) keeps (har-i) the Almighty (dhaar-i) enshrined (ur-i) in mind – is ever conscious of Naam. 7.

Gur kī baṇī gur ṯe jāṯī jė sabaḏ raṯe rang lā▫e.  Paviṯ pāvan se jan nirmal har kai nām samā▫e. ||8||

(J-i) those who are (ratey) imbued (laaey) with (rang-u) love (sabad-i = of the word) of Naam they have (jaati) known/learnt (baani) construction/virtues and commands of (gur) the great Almighty (tey) from (gur) the guru, – who is embodiment of the Almighty.

(Sey) such (jan) persons are of (nirmal) clean conduct (pavit paavan = pure) free of vices; they (samaaey = engrossed) live (naam-i) by Naam/commands (kai) of (har-i) the Almighty. 8.

Har manḏar har kā hāt hai rakẖi▫ā sabaḏ savār. Ŧis vicẖ sa▫uḏā ek nām gurmukẖ lain savār. ||9||

(Har-i mandar-u = God’s abode) the human body is (haatt-u) the shop (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty who has (rakhiaa) kept it (savaar-i) equipped with (sabad-i) of Naam.

In (tis-u = that) this shop (sauda) dealings are of, i.e. conduct of that person is to accord with (eyk-u) the One Naam, i.e. Divine commands; (gurmukh-i) those who follow the guru (lain-i savaar-i) accomplish that. 9.

Har manḏar mėh man lohat hai mohi▫ā ḏūjai bẖā▫e.  Pāras bẖeti▫ai kancẖan bẖa▫i▫ā kīmaṯ kahī na jā▫e. ||10||

(Mah-i) in (har-i mandar-u) the human body is (lohatt-u = iron – base metal) is the virtue-less (man-u) mind (mohiaa) charmed by (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas – than obedience to the Almighty.

It (bhaiaa) becomes (kanchan-u) gold (bheyttiai) being touched (paaras-i) by Paaras – the stone which is believed to turn a base metal to gold with its touch, i.e. the mind is purified of vices when one meets/follow the guru; then its (keemat-i) worth (na jaaey) cannot be (kahi) told, i.e. the guru changes an ordinary person to an exalted one. 10.

Har manḏar mėh har vasai sarab niranṯar so▫e.  Nānak gurmukẖ vaṇjī▫ai sacẖā sa▫uḏā ho▫e. ||11||1||

(Mah-i) in (har-i mandar-u) the body (vasai) abides (har-i) the Almighty and (soey) the same One is present (nirantar-i) in (sarab) everyone/everywhere.

One (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru (vanjeeai) does business in which (sachaa) true/honest (sauda) dealings (hoey) are done, i.e. conducts the self by Naam, sys the third Guru. 11. 1.

Composition of the third Guru in raga Prabhaati. Those who (jaagey) remain awake, i.e. are alert to distractions, (bhaaey) with loving (bhai = fear) respect and obedience to God; they (utaar-i) remove (haumai) ego from the mind, (sey) those (jan) persons (karah-i = do, jaagran = keeping awake for night-long prayers) perform real prayers – protect themselves from evil.

They are (sada) ever (jagaah-i) awake/alert to (raakhah-i) protect (apna = own) their (ghar-u = house) mind from evil; they (maar-i = beat) overcome and (kaaddhah-i) drive out (panch) the five (taskar = thieves) vices – namely lust, anger, greed, worldly attachments and vanity – from thee mind. 1.

Man mere gurmukẖ nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e.   Jiṯ mārag har pā▫ī▫ai man se▫ī karam kamā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Meyrey) my (man) mind, (dhiaaey) pay attention to obeying (naam-u) Naam/Divine commands (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance. (Kamaaey) carry out (seyee) those (karam) actions and that takes on (maarag-i) path by (jat-u) which (har-i) the Almighty (paaeeai) is found.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Gurmukẖ sahj ḏẖun ūpjai ḏukẖ ha▫umai vicẖahu jā▫e.  Har nāmā har man vasai sėhje har guṇ gā▫e. ||2||

(Gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, (sahaj) a steadfast (dhun-i) tuning to Naam (oopjai) develops and (dukh-u) grief causing (haumai) ego (jaaey) leaves (vichah-u = from within) from the mind.

(Har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine commands (vasai = abide, man-i = in mind) are obeyed and one (sahjey) steadfastly (gaaey = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

Gurmaṯī mukẖ sohṇe har rākẖi▫ā ur ḏẖār.  Aithai othai sukẖ gẖaṇā jap har har uṯre pār. ||3||

Those who, (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance (raakhiaa) keep (har-i) the Almighty (dhaar-i) enshrined (ur-i) in mind, i.e. lead life in obedience to Naam, their (mukh) faces are (sohney) beautiful – they are glorified. They enjoy (ghanaa) abundant (sukh-u) comfort/peace (aithai = here) in life and (othai = there) in the hereafter; they (jap-i) remember/obey (har-i) the purifying and (har-i) rejuvenating virtues and commands of the Almighty and (utrey) land (paar-i) on far shore of the world-ocean, i.e. overcome temptations and get to God. 3.

Ha▫umai vicẖ jāgraṇ na hova▫ī har bẖagaṯ na pav▫ī thā▫e.  Manmukẖ ḏar dẖo▫ī nā lahėh bẖā▫e ḏūjai karam kamā▫e. ||4||

(Jaagran-u = being awake) focus cannot be (hovaee) attained (vich-i) in (haumai) ego, i.e. ignoring Naam and acting by self-will influenced by other ideas; such (bhagat-i) such devotion is not (pavaee = put, thaaey = in place) approved by the Almighty.

(Manmukh) self-willed persons do not obey the Almighty but (karam = deeds, kamaaey = carry out) act (doojai) under other (bhaaey) ideas – for short term pleasures –; they do not (lahahi) get (ddhoee = support) acceptance (dar-i) in Divine court, i.e. for union with God and remain in cycles of reincarnation. 4.

It is (dhrig-u) disgraceful (khaana = eating, painhna = wearing clothes) to receive the wherewithal from the Almighty but have (piaar-u) love for/follow (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas.

The way (keerrey) worms of (bistta) the excrement (raatey) love the excrement, self-willed persons like vices; they (hohah-i) are (khuaar-u) frustrated in attaining union with the Creator and keep (mar-i) dying and (jammah-i) being born. 5.

Jin ka▫o saṯgur bẖeti▫ā ṯinā vitahu bal jā▫o. Ŧin kī sangaṯ mil rahāʼn sacẖe sacẖ samā▫o. ||6||

I (bal-i jaau = am sacrifice, vittahu = to) adore (tinaa) those who (bheyttiaa) find/follow (satigur-u) true guru.

O Almighty, may I (mil-i rahaa-n) be in company (ki) of (tin) them and (samaau) remain absorbed (sach-i) in obeying the Eternal (sachey) through truthful conduct – by following the example of the guru’s followers to live by Naam. 6.

Pūrai bẖāg gur pā▫ī▫ai upā▫e kiṯai na pā▫i▫ā jā▫e.  Saṯgur ṯe sahj ūpjai ha▫umai sabaḏ jalā▫e. ||7||

(Gur-u) the guru (paaeeai) is found/obeyed (bhaag-i) with good fortune; the guru is not (paaeeai) found by (kitai) any other (upaaey) effort/measure – own selection.

(Sahaj-u) tranquility (oopjai) comes (tey) by following (satigur) the true guru; (sabad-i= word of) the guru’s guidance helps (jalaaey = burn) dissolve (haumai) ego – and stops ignoring Divine commands to act by self-will. 7.

Har sarṇā▫ī bẖaj man mere sabẖ kicẖẖ karṇai jog. Nānak nām na vīsrai jo kicẖẖ karai so hog. ||8||2||7||2||9||

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (bhaj-u = run) waste no time and place yourself (sarnaaee = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (har-i) the Almighty, who is (jog-u) potent to (karnai) do (sabh kichh-u) everything.

May Naam/Almighty never (veesrai = forgotten) be out of my mind, i.e. may I never lose faith in the Almighty, for only (so) that (hog-u) happens (jo kichh-u) whatever God does, says third Nanak. 8. 2. 7. 2. 9.
