Rāg jaijāvanṯī mėhlā 9.

Composition of the ninth Guru in raga Jaijavanti.

Rām simar rām simar ihai ṯerai kāj hai.  Mā▫i▫ā ko sang ṯi▫āg parabẖ jū kī saran lāg.   Jagaṯ sukẖ mān mithi▫ā jẖūṯẖo sabẖ sāj hai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O human being, (simar-i = remember – twice) be conscious in thoughts and deeds, of virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty; (ihai) this alone (hai) is going to be (kaaj-i) useful – in life and in the hereafter.

(Tiaag-u) give up (sang-u = company) thinking (ko) of (maaiaa) money all the time and (laag-u = be attached) place yourself (saran-i = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (joo/ji) revered (prabhoo) Almighty.

(Maan-u) accept/realize that (sukh) comforts of (jag-u = world) relatives, wealth, status etc. are (mithiaa) false/im-permanent; (sabh) all (saaj-u) creation is (jhoottho = false) transitory. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Supne ji▫o ḏẖan pacẖẖān kāhe par karaṯ mān.   Bārū kī bẖīṯ jaise basuḏẖā ko rāj hai. ||1||

(Pachaan-u = recognize) understand that (dhan-u) wealth is (jio) as possessions in (supney) a dream, i.e. it is left behind on death; (kaahey = why?) do not (karat) take (maan-u) pride (par-i) on it – do not be attached to it.

And (raaj-u = rule) authority/status (ko) of (basudha = earth) the world is (jaisey) like (bheet-i) a wall (ki) of (baaroo/baaloo) sand – it does not remain. 1

Nānak jan kahaṯ bāṯ binas jaihai ṯero gāṯ.   Cẖẖin cẖẖin kar ga▫i▫o kāl ṯaise jāṯ āj hai. ||2||1||

(Jan-u = servant) humble ninth Nanak (kahat-u) says this (baat) thing; (teyro) your (gaat-u) body (jaihai) shall (binas-i) perish; (kar-i) like (kaal-u) yesterday (gaio = went) passed (chhin-u chhin-u) moment by moment, (taisey) similarly (aaj-u) to-day is (jaat-u) passing – and so does the whole life. 2. 1.

Jaijāvanṯī mėhlā 9.   Rām bẖaj rām bẖaj janam sirāṯ hai.  Kaha▫o kahā bār bār samjẖaṯ nah ki▫o gavār.   Binsaṯ nah lagai bār ore sam gāṯ hai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the ninth Guru in raga Jaijavanti. O human being, (bhaj-u) remember and obey (raam-u) the Almighty, again (bhaj-u) remember and obey commands of the Almighty, – your (janam-u) human birth (hai) is (siraat-u) passing – and you can do it only in this life form.

(Kahaa) why are you making me (kahaa) say (baar baar) again and again, (kiau) why don’t you (samjhat) understand, o (gavaar) blockhead – you are too engrossed in the world-play.

(Gaat = body) the body is (sam) like (orey/oley) a hail; it (lagai) takes no (baar) time to (binsat) perish, i.e. death may come any time. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Sagal bẖaram dār ḏėh gobinḏ ko nām lehi.   Anṯ bār sang ṯerai ihai ek jāṯ hai. ||1||

(Ddaar-i dey = drop) shed (sagal) all (bharam) delusions – about permanence of life and your capability –, (leyh-i) remember/obey (naam-u) commands (ko) of (gobind = Master of the world) the Almighty. (Ihai) this (eyk-u) alone (hai) is (jaat-u hai) to go (sang-i) with (teyrai = your) you, i.e. obedience to Naam alone is taken as credit when account of deeds is taken at (baar = time, ant-i = end) the end of life. 1.

Bikẖi▫ā bikẖ ji▫o bisār parabẖ kou jas hī▫e ḏẖār.   Nānak jan kahi pukār a▫osar bihāṯ hai. ||2||2||

(Bisaar-i) forget thinking about (bikhiaa) money (jio) like (bikh-u) poison and (dhaar-i) keep (heeay) in mind to praise and emulate (jas-u = glory) virtues (kou) of (prabh) the Almighty.

(Jan) humble ninth Nanak (kah-i = says, pukaar-i = call out) is reminding you; (ausar-u) the opportunity provided by human birth to obey God is (bihaat-u) passing – do not delay. 2. 2.

Jaijāvanṯī mėhlā 9.   Re man ka▫un gaṯ ho▫e hai ṯerī.  Ih jag mėh rām nām so ṯa▫o nahī suni▫o kān.   Bikẖi▫an si▫o aṯ lubẖān maṯ nāhin ferī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the ninth Guru in raga Jaijavanti. (Rey) o (man-u = mind) human being, do you realize (kaun) what (hoey = be, hoey = happen) shall be (teyri) your (gat-i) condition – when you have face consequences of your deeds of life?

You were sent to obey (naam-u) commands of (raam) the Almighty, (mah-i) in (ih) this (jag = world) human life but you have not (sunio = listened, kaan-i = with the ears) paid attention to (so) that.

You have been (at-i = highly) deeply (lubhaan-i) engrossed (siau) with (bikhian) vices and have not (pheyri) turned your (mat-i) mind away from that. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Mānas ko janam līn simran nah nimakẖ kīn.   Ḏārā sukẖ bẖa▫i▫o ḏīn pagahu parī berī. ||1||

You (leen) took (janam-u) birth (ko) of (maanas) human being – which is the opportunity to remember and obey God, but you did not (keen-u = do, simran-u = remembrance) bring Naam/Divine virtues and commands to mind, (nimakh) for a moment.

You became (deen = poor) a slave of (sukh) comforts/pleasures (ko) of company of (daara) the wife; which (pari = put) has been become (beyri) shackles (pagahu) on the feet, i.e. you cannot even think of Naam and shall be held back from union with the Almighty. 1.

Nānak jan kahi pukār supnai ji▫o jag pasār.   Simraṯ nah ki▫o murār mā▫i▫ā jā kī cẖerī. ||2||3||

(Jan) humble ninth Nanak (kah-i pukaar-i) is calling out to you to realize that this (pasaar-u = expanse, jag = world) play of the world is (jio) like (supnai) a dream, i.e. it is transitory and death may come any time.

(Kio) why do you not (simrat) bring to mind and obey (muraar-i = killer of demon Mur – metaphor for -) the Almighty, (ki = of, ja = whom) whose (cheyri) maid servant (maaiaa) the world-play is, i.e. everything in the world happens by Divine commands. 2. 3.

Jaijāvanṯī mėhlā 9.   Bīṯ jaihai bīṯ jaihai janam akāj re.  Nis ḏin sun kai purān samjẖaṯ nah re ajān.   Kāl ṯa▫o pahūcẖi▫o ān kahā jaihai bẖāj re. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the ninth Guru in raga Jaijavanti. (Rey) o human being, your (janam-u) human life (beet jaihai) is passing; again, your human life is passing, (akaaj-u) without being of use – it is an opportunity to remember and obey God’s Naam/virtues and commands and you are not making use of it.

You.

Even (sun-i kai) after listening to (puraan) Puranas/scriptures (nis-i) night and (din-u) day, you do not (samjhat) understand (ajaan = ignorant like a child) o thoughtless person.

But (kaal-u) death is (tau) is certain and (aan-i = come, pahuchio = reaching) may come any time; (kahaa) where will you (bhaaj-i) run away (jaihai) go to, i.e. you cannot escape Divine justice when account of deeds is taken

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Asthir jo māni▫o ḏeh so ṯa▫o ṯera▫o ho▫e hai kẖeh. ||1||

(Deyh) the body (jo) which you (maanio) believe to be (asthir/sthir) permanent, (so) that body (teyrau) of yours will (tau) certainly (hoey hai) become (kheyh) dust – and your soul will have to account for deeds.

(Rey) o (nilaaj) shameless (moorakh) fool – God provided everything to you – but (kiau = why?) do you do not (leyh-i) remember and obey Naam/commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

Rām bẖagaṯ hī▫e ān cẖẖād ḏe ṯai man ko mān.   Nānak jan ih bakẖān jag mėh birāj re. ||2||4||

(Aan-i) bring and thoughts of (bhagat-i = devotion) obedience of (raam) the Almighty (heeay) to mind and (chhaadd-i dey) give up (maan-u = pride) ego (ko) of (man) the mind, i.e. stop acting by self-will.

(Jan) humble ninth Nanak (bakhaan-i) says: (Biraaj-u = sit) live (mah-i) in (jag) the world – in obedience to the Almighty – for comfort in life and in the hereafter. 2. 4.
