ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 3. Barahmā veḏ paṛai vāḏ vakẖāṇai Anṯar ṯāmas āp na pacẖẖāṇai Ŧā parabẖ pā▫e gur sabaḏ vakẖāṇai ||1||
Composition of the third Guru in Raga Gaurri. A person (parhai) reads (veyd-u = knowledge which Brahma read, and (vakhaanai) talks of (vaad-u) controversial issues – but does not pay attention to the essence of the scriptures.
With (taamas-u = darkness) ignorance (antar-i) within, s/he does not (pachhaanai) recognize (aap-u) the self, i.e. God within.
One finds (prabh-u) the Almighty (ta) only then when s/he follows (sabad-u = word) guidance (gur) the guru (vakhaanai = says) imparts. 1.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Gur sevā kara▫o fir kāl na kẖā▫eManmukẖ kẖāḏẖe ḏūjai bẖā▫e ||1|| rahā▫o
(Seyva karau = serve) follow the teachings of (gur) the guru (phir-i) then you will not (khaaey = consumed) fall prey to (kaal-u) death, i.e. not fall prey to vices. (Manukh) self-willed persons pursue (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas and (khaadhey = eaten) succumb to vices. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell here and reflect.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸੀਧੇ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੀਧੇ ॥ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਧੇ ॥੨॥
Gurmukẖ parāṇī aprāḏẖī sīḏẖe Gur kai sabaḏ anṯar sahj rīḏẖe Merā parabẖ pā▫i▫ā gur kai sabaḏ sīḏẖe ||2||
(Apraadhi) wrongdoing (praani) people can be (seedhey) transformed (gurmukh-i) through the guru’s teachings. They (reedhey) remain (sahj-i) in poise (anatr-i) within (sabad-i= with the word) with guidance (kai) of (gur) the guru.
(Prabh-u) The Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all is (paaiaa) when (seedhey = straightened) guided (sabad-i= with the word) with guidance (kai) of (gur) the guru. 2.
They can attain (sahj) the state of poise (antar) in their minds through the guru’s (sabad) words of wisdom.
The guru’s teachings enable to (paaia) find (mera prabh) the Creator in the mind when it is (seedhe) transformed with the guru’s words. 2.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
Saṯgur mele parabẖ āp milā▫e Mere parabẖ sācẖe kai man bẖā▫e Har guṇ gāvahi sahj subẖā▫e ||3||
(Satigur-i) the true guru (meyley) unites when (Prabh-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (milaaey = causes to meet) leads to the true guru. Those who follow the true guru (bhaaey) are (bhaaey) liked (man-i) in mind (kai) of (saachey) the Eternal (prabh) Master (meyrey = my) of all. They (sahj-i subhaaey) intuitively (gaavah-i) sing/emulate (har-i) Divine (gun) virtues. 3.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਏ ॥ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
Bin gur sācẖe bẖaram bẖulā▫e Manmukẖ anḏẖe saḏā bikẖ kẖā▫e Jam dand sahėh saḏā ḏukẖ pā▫e ||4||
(Bin-u = without) by not following (saachey) the true guru, people (bhulaaey) go astray (gharam-i) in delusion. (Manmukh) self-willed persons do not follow the guru, remain (andhey = blind) ignorant and (khaaey) consume (bikh-u) poison, i.e. succumb to vices.
They (sahah-i = bear) are administered (ddnadd-u) punishment by (jam) Divine justice and (sadaa) ever (paaey) remain in (dukh-u = pain of separation from the Almighty. 4.
ਜਮੂਆ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
Jamū▫ā na johai har kī sarṇā▫ī Ha▫umai mār sacẖ liv lā▫ī Saḏā rahai har nām liv lā▫ī ||5||
(Jamooaa) Divine justice does not (johai) target those (sarnaaee = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (har-i) the Almighty. They (maar-i) kill (haumai = ego) acting by self-will and(laaee) fix (liv) attention (sachi-i) on the Eternal.
Such a person (sadaa) ever (rahai) keeps (liv) attention (laaee) fixed (naam-i) on Naam/commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 5.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪਵਿਤਾ ॥ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਾ ॥ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥੬॥
Saṯgur sevėh se jan nirmal paviṯā Man si▫o man milā▫e sabẖ jag jīṯā In biḏẖ kusal ṯerai mere mīṯā ||6||
Those who (seyvajh-i = serve) obey (satigur-u) the true guru, (sey) such (jan) persons are (nirmal) clean and (pavita) pure. They (milaaey = cause to meet, man = mind) make the mind agreeable to Naam in (man-u) the mind, i.e. are free of ego; they (jeeta) conquer (sabh-u) all (jag-u) world, i.e. everyone follows them.
(In) this (bidh-i) way (kusal-u) happiness can come in (teyrai) your mind, (mayrey) my (meeta) friends. 6.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੭॥
Saṯgurū seve so fal pā▫e Hirḏai nām vicẖahu āp gavā▫e Anhaḏ baṇī sabaḏ vajā▫e ||7||
One who (sevey = serves) follows (satiguru) the true guru, (so) that person (paaey) obtains (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of objectives. S/he (gavaaey = loosed) dispels (aap-u = self) ego (vichah-u) from within and keeps (naam-u) Divine commands (hirdai) in mind.
(Anhad) incessant (baani) words/celestial music of (sabad-u) Divine message (vajaaey) plays in mind, i.e. s/he experiences the pleasure of presence of the Almighty within. 7.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਵਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਨ ਸੀਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ਭਗਤੀ ਸੀਧੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੫॥
Saṯgur ṯe kavan kavan na sīḏẖo mere bẖā▫ī Bẖagṯī sīḏẖe ḏar sobẖā pā▫ī. Nānak rām nām vadi▫ā▫ī ||8||5||
One cannot count (kavan-u kavan-u) who all have been (seedo) transformed (tay) by (satigur) the true guru, o (meyrey) my (bhaaee) brethren. (Seedhey) transformed (bhagti) by devotion/obedience, they (paaee) obtain (sobha) glory in Divine (dar-i) court, i.e. are honorably united with the Creator.
Such is (vaddiaaee) the virtue of conforming (naam-i) to commands of (raam) the Almighty, says third Nanak. 8. 5.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 3 Ŧarai guṇ vakẖāṇai bẖaram na jā▫e Banḏẖan na ṯūtėh mukaṯ na pā▫e Mukaṯ ḏāṯā saṯgur jug māhi ||1||
Composition of the third Guru in Raga Gaurri. One who (vakhaanai) talks of (trai) the three (gun) attributes of ego, his/her (bharam-u) delusion does not (jaaey = go) end. His/her (bnadhan) bondage to vices does not (toottah) break, and s/he does not (paaey) obtain freedom from lures of the world.
(Satigur) the true guru (daataa = giver) facilitator of (mukat-i) freedom from lures (maah-i) in (jug = age) human birth. 1.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Gurmukẖ parāṇī bẖaram gavā▫e Sahj ḏẖun upjai har liv lā▫e ||1|| rahā▫o
(Praani) a person (gurmukh-i) who follows the guru (gavaaey = loses) ends (bharam-u) delusion. S/he (laaey) fixes (liv) attention of (har-i) Divine virtues and commands and (upjai = comes) experiences (sahj) incessant (dhun-i) celestial music. 1.
Dwell here and reflect.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਲੈ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
Ŧarai guṇ kālai kī sir kārā Nām na cẖīṯėh upāvaṇhārā Mar jamėh fir vāro vārā ||2||
Those under influence of (trai) the three (gun) attributes of ego action come in (kaaraa) command/domain of (kaalai) of death, i.e. succumbs to vices, they do not (cheytah-i) remember commands of (upaavanhaara) the Creator.
S/he (mar-i = dies) falls prey to vices and (jammah-i) are born (phir-i) again (vaaro vaaraa) repeatedly. 2.

ਅੰਧੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਈ ॥ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
Anḏẖe gurū ṯe bẖaram na jā▫ī Mūl cẖẖod lāge ḏūjai bẖā▫ī Bikẖ kā māṯā bikẖ māhi samā▫ī ||3||
(Bharam-u) delusion/ignorance cannot (jaaee = leave) be removed (tey) by (andhey = blind) an ignorant guru. People (chhodd-i) forsake (mool-u = root) the origin/Naam/Divine virtues and commands, to (laagey) pursue (doojai) other (bhaaee) ideas.
A person (maataa) imbued with (bikh-u = poison) vices (samaaee) remains (maah-i) in (bikh-u) poison, i.e. under influence of vices. 3.
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਭਰਮਾਏ ॥ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
Mā▫i▫ā kar mūl janṯar bẖarmā▫e Har jī▫o visri▫ā ḏūjai bẖā▫e Jis naḏar kare so param gaṯ pā▫e ||4||
The Creator (kar-i) created (maaiaa) ego as (mool-u) root of human birth, which (bharmaaey) misleads (jantr) the creatures. They (visriaa) forget commands of (jeeau) revered (har-i) Almighty because of other (bhaaey) attractions.
One on (jis-u) whom the Almighty (karey) casts (nadar-i) sight of grace, i.e. who is seen devoted, s/he is motivated to (paaey) obtain (param) supreme (gat-i) state – of freedom from lures of life. 4. ==============
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਛਪੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਰਖੈ ਛਪਾਏ ॥ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੫॥
Anṯar sācẖ bāhar sācẖ varṯā▫e Sācẖ na cẖẖapai je ko rakẖai cẖẖapā▫e Gi▫ānī būjẖėh sahj subẖā▫e ||5||
One who has (saach-u = truth) Naam (antar-i) within (vartaaey) spreads awareness of (saach-u) Naam (baahar-i = outside) everywhere. (Saach-u) living by Naam is not (chhapai) hidden, (jey) if (ko) someone (rakhai) keeps (chhapaaey) hidden.
(Giaani = knowledgeable) one aware of Naam (sahj-i subhaaey) intuitively (boojhah-i) recognizes one with goodness. 5.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
Gurmukẖ sācẖ rahi▫ā liv lā▫e Ha▫umai mā▫i▫ā sabaḏ jalā▫e Merā parabẖ sācẖā mel milā▫e ||6||
(Gurmukh-i) one who follows the guru (tahiaa0 keeps (liv) attention (laaey) focused (saach-i) on truth/conforming to Naam. S/he (jalaaey = burns) dispels (haumai maaiaa) ego/acting by self-will following (sabad-i = word of) guidance of the guru.
(Saachaa) the Eternal (prabh-u) Master (meyra = my) of all (meyl-i milaaey) leads the seekers to the guru. 6.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
Saṯgur ḏāṯā sabaḏ suṇā▫e Ḏẖāvaṯ rākẖai ṯẖāk rahā▫e. Pūre gur ṯe sojẖī pā▫e ||7||
One to whom (daata) the beneficent (satigur-u) true guru (sunaaey = causes to hear) imparts awareness of (sabad-u = word0 Divine commands. S/he (raakhai) restrains (dhaavat = running) wandering of the mind and (rahaaey)keep (tthaak-i) steady – fixed on Naam.
One (paaey) obtains (sojhi) awareness of Naam (tey) from (poorey) the perfect guru. 7.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੮॥੬॥
Āpe karṯā sarisat siraj jin go▫ī Ŧis bin ḏūjā avar na ko▫ī Nānak gurmukẖ būjẖai ko▫ī ||8||6||
It is (karta) the Creator (aapey) alone (jin-i) who (siraj-i) created (sristt-i) the universe also (goee = drives) causes to function – according to Naam/cosmic laws. There is (na koee = not any) none (dooja avar-u) other – who has powers.
(Koee) some rare person who (gurmukh-i) follows the guru (boojhai) understands, says third Nanak. 8. 6.
