ਆਸਾਵਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਈਐ ਹਾਂ ॥ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਾਂ ॥ਉਆ ਰਸ ਜੋ ਬਿਧੇ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਤਾ ਕਉ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਧੇ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਡਭਾਗਿਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

 

Āsāvarī mėhlā 5.Mil har jas gā▫ī▫ai hāʼn. Param paḏ pā▫ī▫ai hāʼn. U▫ā ras jo biḏẖe hāʼn. Ŧā ka▫o sagal siḏẖe hāʼn. An▫ḏin jāgi▫ā hāʼn. Nānak badbẖāgi▫ā mere manā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raagini Aasaavri. (Gaaeeai = singing) reflecting on (jas-u = praise) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (mil-i = together) in holy congregation, we (paaeeai = obtain) can reach (param) the most exalted (pad-u) state – of peace of mind.
(Jo) one who (bidhey = pierced) loves (uaa) that (ras-u) taste – Divine experience within, (sagal) all (sidhey) success achieved (ta kau) by him/her, i.e. s/he achieves everything.
S/he is (andin-u = every day) ever (jaagia = awake) alert to temptations in the world-play, and commands of the Creator. Such a person is (badbhaagia) fortunate, (meyrey) my (manaa) mind, says the fifth Nanak. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

 

ਸੰਤ ਪਗ ਧੋਈਐ ਹਾਂ ॥ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਈਐ ਹਾਂ ॥ਦਾਸਹ ਰੇਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਬਿਆਪੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥
Sanṯ pag ḏẖo▫ī▫ai hāʼn. Ḏurmaṯ kẖo▫ī▫ai hāʼn. Ḏāsah ren ho▫e hāʼn. Bi▫āpai ḏukẖ na ko▫e hāʼn.

 

One who (dhoeeai) washes (pag) the feet of, i.e. obeys, (sant) the guru, (khoeeai = loses) gives up (durmat-i) evil thinking.
One who (hoey) becomes (reyn) the dust of the feet of (daasah = servants) Devotees of the Almighty – humbly serves and follows them, (na koey) no (dukh-u) distress (biaapai) befalls him/her.

 

ਭਗਤਾਂ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੁ ਹਾਂ ॥ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਕਦੇ ਮਰੁ ਹਾਂ ॥ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਸੇ ਭਏ ਹਾਂ ॥ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜਪਿ ਲਏ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਾ ॥੧॥
Bẖagṯāʼn saran par hāʼn. Janam na kaḏe mar hāʼn. Asthir se bẖa▫e hāʼn. Har har jinĥ jap la▫e mere manā. ||1||

 

One who (par-u) places the self in (saran-i = sanctuary) care of (bhagtaa’n) the devotees – follows them, is (kadey na) never (janam-i) born to (mar-u) die, i.e. is freed from cycles of births and deaths.
(Sey) they (bhaey) become (asthir-u = stable) stable, i.e. merge with the Creator, (jinh) who (jap-i laey) remember and conform to virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty (meyrey manaa) my mind, those. 1.

 

ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਤੂੰ ਹਾਂ ॥ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ਮੂੰ ਹਾਂ ॥ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਮਨਹਿ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਸੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥
Sājan mīṯṯūʼn hāʼn. Nām driṛ▫ā▫e mūʼn hāʼn. Ŧis bin nāhi ko▫e hāʼn. Manėh arāḏẖ so▫e hāʼn.

 

O Almighty, (too’n) You are my (saajan) companion and (meet) friend; please (driraaey) give firm understanding of (naam-u) Your virtues and commands to (moo’n) me.
O dear ones, there is (naahi koey) no other Master (bin-u) except (tis-u = that) the Almighty. Let us (araadh-i) invoke (soey) IT alone (manah-i) in mind.

 

ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਹਾਂ ॥ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਰੈ ਹਾਂ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੁ ਜਾਉ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਉ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਾ ॥੨॥੫॥੧੬੧॥
Nimakẖ na vīsrai hāʼn. Ŧis bin ki▫o sarai hāʼn. Gur ka▫o kurbān jā▫o hāʼn. Nānak jape nā▫o mere manā. ||2||5||161||

 

Do not (veesrai) forget IT (nimakh) even for a moment; we (kiau = how) cannot (sarai) accomplish anything (bin-u) without (tis-u = that) the Master.
I (kurbaan-u jaau = sacrifice, kau = to) adore (gur) the guru, with whose guidance I (japey) remember and conform to (naau) Divine virtues and commands, says fifth Nanak. 2. 5. 161.

Āsāvarī mėhlā 5. Kāran karan ṯūʼn hāʼn. Avar nā sujẖai mūʼn hāʼn. Karahi so ho▫ī▫ai hāʼn. Sahj sukẖ so▫ī▫ai hāʼn. Ḏẖīraj man bẖa▫e hāʼn. Parabẖ kai ḏar pa▫e mere manā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raagini Aasaavri. O Almighty, (too’n) You are (kaaran) the cause of (karan) action/happening. (Avar-u na) none other (sujhai) seems like you to (moo’n) me.

What You (karah-i) do (s-u) that (hoeeai) happens, i.e. everything happens by natural laws.
I (soeeai) sleep in (sahj-i) tranquil (sukh-i) peace by obedience to the Almighty.
(Man-i) the mind (bhaey) attains (dheeraj = patience) comfort when one (paey) places the self (dar-i = gate) in the sanctuary/care (kai) of (prabh) the Almighty, (meyrey) my (manaa) mind.
(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

 

ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਮੇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਪੂਰਨ ਸੰਜਮੇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਜਬ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੇ ਆਪ ਹਾਂ ॥ਤਬ ਤੇ ਮਿਟੇ ਤਾਪ ਹਾਂ ॥ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀਆ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਪਤਿ ਰਖੁ ਬਨਵਾਰੀਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਾ ॥੧॥
Sāḏẖū sangme hāʼn. Pūran sanjme hāʼn. Jab ṯe cẖẖute āp hāʼn. Ŧab ṯe mite ṯāp hāʼn. Kirpā ḏẖārī▫ā hāʼn. Paṯ rakẖ banvārī▫ā mere manā. ||1||

 

(Sangamey = confluence) company/guidance of (saadhoo) the guru, is (pooran) the perfect (sanjmey) method – to find the Almighty within and be at peace.
(Jab tey) from the time my (aap) ego (chhuttey = freed) was dissolved, (tab tey) since then (taap) afflictions – of vices – (mittey = erased) have left me.
Invoke (banvaareea) the Almighty, IT (dhaareeaa) bestows (kirpa) kindness (meyrey) my (manaa) mind: IT (rakh-u) preserves (pat-i) honour, (meyrey) my (manaa) mind O Almighty. 1.

 

ਇਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਨੀਐ ਹਾਂ ॥ਹਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਮਾਨੀਐ ਹਾਂ ॥ਮੰਦਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ਹੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਆਪੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਖੈ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੋ ਚਖੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਾ ॥੨॥
Ih sukẖ jānī▫ai hāʼn. Har kare so mānī▫ai hāʼn. Manḏā nāhi ko▫e hāʼn. Sanṯ kī ren ho▫e hāʼn. Āpe jis rakẖai hāʼn. Har amriṯ so cẖakẖai mere manā. ||2||

 

I (jaaniai = know) experience (ihu) this (sukh-u) comfort. I (maaneeai) accept (s-u) that what (har-i) the Almighty does i.e. being happy with the will of God.
I do not find (koey) any one (mandaa) bad, since I (hoey) became (reyn) the dust of the feet (ki) of, i.e. have followed, (sant) the guru.
(Jis-u) one whom the Master (aapey) IT-self (rakhai) protects from vices by leading to the guru,
(so) that person (chakhai) tastes (amrit) the life-giving elixir, i.e. is at peace, O (meyrey) my (manaa) mind. 2.

 

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਅੰਤਰ ਗਤਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਹਾਂ ॥ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੁਝੈ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਾ ॥੩॥੬॥੧੬੨॥

Jis kā nāhi ko▫e hāʼn. Ŧis kā parabẖū so▫e hāʼn. Anṯargaṯ bujẖai hāʼn. Sabẖ kicẖẖ ṯis sujẖai hāʼn. Paṯiṯ uḏẖār leho hāʼn. Nānak arḏās ehu mere manā. ||3||6||162||

 

(Jis ka) one who has (naahi koey) no one – to support, (soey = that) the One (prabhoo) Almighty is the support (tis ka) of that person – if s/he seeks Divine sanctuary.
One who (bujhai) understands his/her (antargat-i) inner state, i.e. recognizes the Master within,
(tis-u) that person (sujhai) becomes aware of (sabh kichh-u) everything, i.e. sees the Almighty within everyone and everywhere. 
O Almighty, (udhaar-i leyh-u) please save me, (patit = fallen) mired in vices; make (eyh-u) this (ardaas) supplication to God, (meyrey) mind (manaa) mind, says fifth Nanak. 3. 6. 162.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raagini Aasaavri, with stanzas (ik-tuka) of one verse.

 

ਓਇ ਪਰਦੇਸੀਆ ਹਾਂ ॥ਸੁਨਤ ਸੰਦੇਸਿਆ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
O▫e parḏesī▫ā hāʼn. Sunaṯ sanḏesi▫ā hāʼn. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

 (Oey) o mortal, you (pardeyseeaa = foreigner) are wandering outside. (Sunat) listen to the Divine (sandeysiaa) message from within. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

 

ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਰਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਸਭ ਕਉ ਤਜਿ ਗਏ ਹਾਂ ॥ਸੁਪਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਭਏ ਹਾਂ ॥ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਲਏ ॥੧॥
Jā si▫o racẖ rahe hāʼn. Sabẖ ka▫o ṯaj ga▫e hāʼn. Supnā ji▫o bẖa▫e hāʼn. Har nām jiniĥ la▫e. ||1||

 

(Ja) whatever the mortals are (rach-i rahey) engrossed (siau) with, they will (taj-i gaey) leave    (sabh) all (kau) of that behind – on death.
(Jinih) those who (laey) take/assimilate (naam-u) Divine commands on role in life, understand that
this association (bhaey) is (jiau) like (supna) a dream – and does not get attached to them. 1.

ਹਰਿ ਤਜਿ ਅਨ ਲਗੇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਭਗੇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨਿ ਲਹੇ ਹਾਂ ॥ਜੀਵਤ ਸੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥੭॥੧੬੩॥੨੩੨॥
Har ṯaj an lage hāʼn. Janmėh mar bẖage hāʼn. Har har jan lahe hāʼn. Jīvaṯ se rahe hāʼn. Jisahi kirpāl ho▫e hāʼn. Nānak bẖagaṯ so▫e. ||2||7||163||232||

 

Those who (taj-i) forsake (har-i) the Almighty, and (lagey) get attached (an) to other pursuits; they (bhagey = run) go through cycles of (janmah-i) births and (mar-i) deaths.
(Jan-i) the servants/devotees (lahey) take/assimilate virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty. (Sey) they (rahey) remain (jeevat) alive – do not succumb to vices and hence do not keep taking births to die.
But only (jisah-i) one on whom the Almighty (hoey) is (kripaal-u) kind – to lead to the guru,
(soey) that person becomes (bhagat-u) a devotee, i.e. obeys Divine commands, says fifth Nanak. 2. 7. 163. 232.

Composition of the ninth Guru in Raga Aasa.

 

ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕਹਉ ਕਉਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨ ਕੀ ॥ਲੋਭਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਓ ਦਸ ਹੂ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਵਤ ਆਸਾ ਲਾਗਿਓ ਧਨ ਕੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Birthā kaha▫o ka▫un si▫o man kī. Lobẖ garsi▫o ḏas hū ḏis ḏẖāvaṯ āsā lāgi▫o ḏẖan kī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Kaun siau) to whom I should (kahau) tell (birtha) the sorry state of (man = mind) the human being. S/he (grasio) is possessed (lobh-i) by greed, and (aasa lagio) caught in desires for (dhan) money, (dhaavat) running in (das hoo dis) all ten directions i.e. keeps making all types of schemes. 1. 

 

ਸੁਖ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਤ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਤ ਜਨ ਜਨ ਕੀ ॥

ਦੁਆਰਹਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਸੁਆਨ ਜਿਉ ਡੋਲਤ ਨਹ ਸੁਧ ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ॥੧॥
Sukẖ kai heṯ bahuṯḏukẖ pāvaṯ sev karaṯ jan jan kī. Ḏu▫ārėh ḏu▫ār su▫ān ji▫o dolaṯ nah suḏẖ rām bẖajan kī. ||1||

 

S/he (paavat) goes through (bahut-u) lot of (dukh-u) pain/inconvenience (seyv karat = serving) trying to please (jan jan) numerous people – to seek favours, (heyt-i) for the sake of (sukh-u) transitory comfort/pleasure.
(Jiau) it is like (suaan) a stray dog (ddolat) wanders (duaarah-i duaar-i) from door to door – for food; but does not (sudh) think of (bhajan) invoking (raam) the all-pervasive Master, to attain peace. 1.

 

ਮਾਨਸ ਜਨਮ ਅਕਾਰਥ ਖੋਵਤ ਲਾਜ ਨ ਲੋਕ ਹਸਨ ਕੀ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਿਉ ਨਹੀ ਗਾਵਤ

ਕੁਮਤਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਤਨ ਕੀ ॥੨॥੧॥ ੨੩੩॥
Mānas janam akārath kẖovaṯ lāj na lok hasan kī. Nānak har jas ki▫o nahī gāvaṯ kumaṯ bināsai ṯan kī. ||2||1||233||

 

S/he (khovat) loses – the opportunity provided by – (maanas) human (janam) birth – to invoke, and attain union with, the Creator; s/he (na laaj) has no shame when (lok) people (hasan) laugh at him/her – when s/he demeans him/her-self.
O mortal, (kiau nahi) why don’t you, i.e. you should, (gaavat = sing) remember and live by (jas-u = praise) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty, so that (kumat-i) evil tendency of (tan) the body i.e. evil thoughts, (binaasai) is banished. 2. 1. 233.
