O Almighty, (jis) those (no) to whom You (hoh-i) are (daialaa) kind, (toohai) You Yourself (manaah-i) cause/motivate them to accept (teyra) Your (bhaana) will.
And (jo) whatever deeds of a creature (bhaavai) please (tudh-u) You, (saaee) that is (bhagat-i) devotion; but irrespective of that (too’n) You (pratipaala = nurture) look after (sarab) all (jeeaa) creatures. 1.

O (meyrey) my (raam) all-pervasive (raa-e = king) Sovereign Master, (santaa = saints) the devotees take (tumhaari) Your (tteyk) support, i.e. look only to You being the highest authority.
(Jo) whatever (bhaavai) pleases (tudh-u) You is (parvaan-u) acceptable to them; (toohai) You alone are (adhaari = mainstay) the controller of (man-i = mind) thoughts and (tan-i = body) actions of all. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

O Almighty, (too’n) You are (daiaal-u) compassionate, (kripaal-u) kind (nidh-i = treasure) the storehouse of (kripa) mercy; You are (pooranhaara) fulfiller of (mansa) aspirations.
(Sabh-i) all (bhagat) devotees are (teyrey) Your (preetam = beloved) loved ones, o (praanpat-i = master of life) Creator and Sustainer, and (too’n) You are (piaara) the Beloved (ka) of (bhagtan) the devotees. 2.

(Too) You are (athaah-u = bottomless) unfathomable, (apaar-u) Infinite and (at-i = very, oocha = high) the greatest; there is (koee na) none (avar-u) other (teyri = your, bhaatey = type) like You.
(Ih) this is (hamaari) my (ardaas-i) supplication, o (suaami) Master; may You not (visar-u) be forgotten by me, o (sukhdaata = giver of comforts) benefactor of all. 3.

I wish to (gaava = sing) praise and emulate Your (gun) virtues (din-u) day and (rain-i) night (saas-i saas-i = with every breath) forever, but can do so at Your (bhaava) pleasure.
Nanak the fifth (maagai) asks for (sukh-u) peace/happiness of living by (teyra) Your (naam-u) virtues and commands, but can (paava) get it when You (sahib) the Master (tutthai) is pleased to grant. 4. 1. 48.

Sūhī mėhlā 5. visrahi nāhī jiṯ ṯū kabhū so thān ṯerā kehā. Āṯẖ pahar jiṯ ṯuḏẖ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī nirmal hovai ḏehā. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O Almighty, (keha) what type of, i.e. how to know, (teyra) Your (thaan-u) place, i.e. you have made, (jit-u) where You are not (visrah-i) forgotten,
by being (jit-u) where (tudh-u) You (dhiaaee) are kept in mind, and (deyha) the body (hovai) is (nirmal) purified, i.e. one’s thoughts and deeds are freed of vices. 1.
Mere rām ha▫o so thān bẖālaṇ ā▫i▫ā. Kẖojaṯ kẖojaṯ bẖa▫i▫ā sāḏẖsang ṯinĥ sarṇā▫ī pā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (raam) Almighty Master, (meyra = my) of all, I (aaiaa) have come (bhaalan) searching for (so) that (thaan-u) place – where You dwell.
While (khojat khojat) searching I (bhaiaa) happened to find (saadhsang-u = holy company) the company of seekers and with (tinh) their (sarnaaee = sanctuary) guidance, I (paaiaa) found You, i.e. now I know that You dwell in holy congregation. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.
Beḏ paṛe paṛ barahme hāre ik ṯil nahī kīmaṯ pā▫ī. Sāḏẖik siḏẖ firėh billāṯe ṯe bẖī mohe mā▫ī. ||2||
(Brahmey) Brahma (parrey) kept reading and (haarey = gave up) got tired (parr-i) reading (beyd) the Vedas but did not (paaee) obtain (til-u = sesame seed) a bit of (keemat-i = value) understanding about You.
(Saadhik = practitioners) the seekers and (sidh) accomplished saints (phirah-i = wander) keep (bil-laatey = wailing) desperately seeking, but (bhi = also) they are (moh-e) enticed by (maai/maaiaa) temptations in the world-play – and cannot find You. 2.

(Das) the ten (autaar = who descend) incarnations of Vishnu (hoey = were, vartey = acted) ruled the minds of people while Mahadev acts as (audhoota) an ascetic.
(Tinh) they (bhi) also could not (paaiaa = get) know (teyra) Your (ant-u = limits) Being; those who follow Mahadev (thakey = got tired) keep on (laaey) applying (bibhoota) ash on the body, i.e. do nothing to know, or teach about You. 3.

Says fifth Nanak: When one (bheyttio) = finds) gets (saphal = fruitful) the rewarding (darsan-u = sight) meeting with the guru, (ta) then s/he (dhiaaiaa) pays attention to virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty, with the guru’s guidance.
Such (santi) seekers (gaaiaa) sing (mangal-u) songs of joy on finding the Master within; and remain at (sookh) peace with (sahj) poise (aanand) bliss (ras) the elixir of (naam) Divine virtues. 4. 2. 49.
————————————————
Note: It is common experience to find people engaged in methods of worship like offering flowers and lighting lamps before the deities, as also rituals and superstitions, to display devotion. But this does not help achieve the objective of human birth to unite with the Creator. The right way is to act on directions given to the soul by the Creator, i.e. remember and emulate IT’s virtues and obey IT’s commands. This is living by Naam guided by the guru, says the fifth Guru in this Shabad.
Sūhī mėhlā 5. Karam ḏẖaram pakẖand jo ḏīsėh ṯin jam jāgāṯī lūtai. Nirbāṇ kīrṯan āvhu karṯe kā nimakẖ simraṯ jiṯ cẖẖūtai. ||1||
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. (Dharam) religious (karam) rituals and (paakhandd = pretense) exhibition of devotion (jo) which (deesah-i) is seen in the world; those who practice these, (jam-u) the agent of Divine justice (loottai) robs, i.e. penalizes, (tin) them like (jaagaati) a tax collector – with denial of union with the Creator, and hence rebirth.
Therefore o seekers, (gaavh-u) sing (nirbaan = pure) only (keertan-u) praise of (kartey) the Creator, by (simrat) remembering (jit-u) whom even (nimakh) for a moment, i.e. once one starts, one (chhoottai) is freed from the Jam, and escapes rebirth. 1.
Sanṯahu sāgar pār uṯrī▫ai. Je ko bacẖan kamāvai sanṯan kā so gur parsādī ṯarī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
O (santah-u) seekers we all need to (utareeai = land, paar-i = on far bank) get across the world (saagar-u) ocean, i.e. overcome vices in the world-play to attain union with the Almighty.
(Jey) if (ko) someone (kamaavai) carries out (bachan-u = word) instructions of the (santan) the seekers who are guided by the guru, (so) that person (tareeai = swims) gets across the world-ocean (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Kot ṯirath majan isnānā is kal mėh mail bẖarījai. Sāḏẖsang jo har guṇ gāvai so nirmal kar lījai. ||2||
(Majan) dips and (isnaana) baths at (kott-i = crores) millions of (teerath) pilgrimages, i.e. with practice of rituals, one (bahreejai) is smeared with (mail-u) the dirt – of pride – (mah-i) in this (kal-i = conflict) age of duality.
One (jo) who (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty, (so) that person (kar-i leejai = is made, nirmal-u = purified) gets rid of vices – which cannot be done with rituals. 2.

Beḏ kaṯeb simriṯ sabẖ sāsaṯ inĥ paṛi▫ā mukaṯ na ho▫ī. Ėk akẖar jo gurmukẖ jāpai ṯis kī nirmal so▫ī. ||3||
There are (sabh-i) all these scriptures like (beyd) the Vedas, (kateyb) the Semitic scriptures and (saasat) Shastras; (mukat-i) freedom from vices is not (hoi) obtained by just (parriaa) reading (inh) these – and performing rituals mentioned in them.
But (jo) one who (jaapai) understands and practices (eyk-u = one, akahr-u = word) Naam or Divine virtues and commands, (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, his/her (soee = praise) reputation is that of (nirmal) a pure person – and s/he is approved by the Almighty. 3.

Naam is (saajhaa = shared) the common (updeys = instruction) guidance for (chahu) all four (varna) castes namely Khatri/Kashatriya, Brahmin, (sood) Shudra and (vais) Vaish, i.e. for all mankind.
Says fifth Nanak: The Almighty is present (maajhaa) in (ghatt-i ghatt-i) all bodies/minds; one who (japai) remembers, understands and practices Naam (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, (so) that person (udhrai) rises above rituals and vices (mah-i) in this (kal-i = age of conflicts) world of duality. 4. 3. 50.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. The seekers (raat-e = dyed, rang-i = in color) live by (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty; (jo kichh-u) whatever (prabh) the Master (karai) does, they (maanah-i) accept (soee) that happily.
(Jinh) those who (praatey) recognize – and practice – (charan = feet) commands of (har-i) the Almighty, (tinh ki) their (sobha) reputation spreads (sabhni = all, thaai = places) everywhere, i.e. they are praised by everyone. 1.

O (raam) all-pervasive (har-i) Master, there is (na koee) none (jeyvadd) as great as Your (santaa) saints/devotees.
(Bhagtaa) the devotees (ban-i aaee = get along) are used to, i.e. make it a practice, to live (siau) by virtues and commands of (prabh) the Master (apney = own) of all, and (soee) that pervades (jal-i) in water, (thal-i) in/on land and (maheeal-i) in space. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate

(Apraadhi = transgressor) a person committing (kott-i = crore/ten million) countless transgressions (udhrai) is emancipated by (santsang-i) being in company of the saint; (jam-u) the agent to Divine justice does not (aavai) come (neyrr-i) near (ta kai) that person – who invokes You.
If there (hovai) is someone (bichhurriaa) separated from the Almighty (janam janam) for numerous births, the saint (aan-i = brings) guides him/her to (milaavai = causes to meet) be united (siau) with (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

(Jo) one who (aavai) comes to (saran-i = sanctuary) seek guidance, (sant) the saint (kaattai = cuts) frees him/her from (moh) attachment to (maaiaa) the world-play, (bharam) the delusion that the Almighty is far somewhere and hence from the resultant (bhau) fear – of who would help.
With (j-eha) whatever (manorath-u) objective one (araadhey = invokes) seeks guidance, s/he (paavai) receives (so) that (tey) from (santan) the saints. 3.
Jan kī mahimā keṯak barna▫o jo parabẖ apne bẖāṇe. Kaho Nānak jin saṯgur bẖeti▫ā se sabẖ ṯe bẖa▫e nikāṇe. ||4||4||51||
I (barnau = mention, k-etak = how much?) cannot count (mahimaa = praise) the virtues of (jan) the servant/devotee (jo) who (bhaane = is pleasing) is approved by (prabh) the Master (apney = own) of all.
(Kah-u) say o fifth Nanak: (Jin) those who (bheyttiaa) find and follow (satigur) the true guru, (tey) they are (nikaaney) independent (tey) from (sabh) all – because by following the guru the Almighty helps them. 4. 4. 51.
————————————————–
Note: Maaiaa or the world-play abounds in temptations causing craving and to forget the Creator. People also suffer from jealousy and enmity towards someone or the other. These cause restless-ness and have been likened to fire. The way to overcome these is to be conscious of Naam, i.e. Divine virtues and commands which are the guide for life. One becomes aware of Naam when the Almighty enables to find the guru and follow his teachings, says the fifth Guru in this Shabad.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O Almighty, those who (paey = fall) place themselves in (teyri) Your (sarnaai = sanctuary) care and obedience, i.e. live by Divine virtues and commands, You (raakhey) protect them (tey) from (maha) the great (agan-i) fire – of restless-ness caused by craving and jealousy in life.
With (maan-u = pride) confidence (teyra = your) that You alone deliver from these, they get (taan-u) strength (antar-i) in (rid) the mind and (chukaai = ended) give up (aas-i) expectations of obtaining peace (hor = other, dooji = second) from anywhere else. 1.

O (meyrey) my (raai = king) Sovereign (raam) all-pervasive Master, one (ubrey = rises above) is saved from – vices in the world-play when (tudh-u) You/Divine commands (aaiai = coming) are kept (chit-i) in mind.
Those who place (tteyk) reliance (teyri = your) on You, and have (bharvaasa) confidence (tumhraa = your) in You, to (udhrey) emancipate from vices, they (jap-i) keep in mind and obey (tumhaara) Your (naam-u) commands. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Tumh) You (bhaey) are, (aap-i) on Your own, (kirpaala) kind to (kaaddh-i leeay) take out the humans (tey) from (andh) the blind (koop) well, i.e. deliver them from being engrossed in the world-play that causes to forget You.
You (aap-i) Yourself (samhaal-i = pay attention, saar = state/condition) take care of, and (karey pratipaala = nurture) sustain all as well as (deeay = give) provide (sarab) all (sukh) comforts. 2.

(Parmeysar-u) the Supreme Master (nadar-i = sight of grace, karey = casts) bestows (apni = own) IT’s grace to (kaatt-i) cut (bandhan) bondage to the world-play and (chhaddaaey) free from vices.
(Prabh-i) the Master (aap-i) IT-self (karaai = gets done) motivates to (aapni = own) IT’s (bhagat-i) devotion and (aapey) IT-self (laaey) engages the creatures in (seyva = service) carrying out Divine commands. 3.

Says fifth Nanak: When (sukhdaatai = giver of comforts) the beneficent Master (daiaa kar-i) is kind one (bheyttiaa = meets) finds (poora) the perfect (satigur-u) true guru; and under the guru’s guidance, (moh) attachments to the world-play (binaasey = destroyed) are broken, (bharam–u) straying under their influence (gaiaa = leaves) ends, all (bhai) fears are obviated, and (sagal) all (visoora) sorrows (mittiaa = erased) leave. 4. 5. 52.
——————————————————
Note: Some people do not believe in the Creator and think they are capable of doing acts. In this Shabad, the fifth Guru asks if nothing existed then who did anything. People act after the Creator creates with allotted roles. The verse ending with Rahaau clarifies this.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. Question: (Jab) when there (seeo) was (kachh-u na) nothing existing, (tab) what the creature (karta) did and (kar-i) by doing (kavan) what (karam) deeds was s/he (aaiaa = came) born?
Answer: (Tthaakur-i) the Master (rachaaiaa) creates (rachan-u) the creation; it is (apna) IT’s own (kheyl-u) play and IT-self (kar-i) makes and (deykhai) watches it. 1.

O (meyrey) my (raam = Almighty, raai = king) Supreme Master (kachoo na) nothing can (hoee) be done (tey) by (mujh) me, i.e. the creatures.
(Soee = that) the One Master is (nirantar-i) continuously present in (sarab = all) everyone and being in them, (aapey) IT-self (karta) does and (karaaey) gets things done, i.e. allots role in life. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Kaachi = unbaked/perishable, deyh = body) the mortal is (iaani) ignorant and keeps committing transgressions; s/he (na katahoo) can never (chhoottai) be emancipated by (gani) counting (ganti = count) them and forgiving one by one, i.e. there are far too many negatives.
O (karnaihaarey) Creator, (prabh) my Master, please (karahu = do) bestow (kripa) mercy; (teyri) Your (bakhas) gracious-ness is (niraali) different from others, i.e. You ignore wrong-doings of those who seek refuge in You. 2.
Jī▫a janṯ sabẖ ṯere kīṯe gẖat gẖat ṯuhī ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai. Ŧerī gaṯ miṯ ṯūhai jāṇėh kuḏraṯ kīm na pā▫ī▫ai. ||3||
(Sabh) all (jeea jant) creatures are (keetey) created (teyrey = your) by You and (tuhi) You alone are (dhiaaeeai) invoked (ghatt-i ghatt-i = in all minds) by all creatures.
(Toohai) You alone (jaanah-i) know (teyri) Your (gat-i) state, i.e. what, and (mit-i = measure) how great You are; we creatures cannot (paaiai = known) know Your (keem = price/value) powers and grace. 3.
Nirguṇ mugaḏẖ ajāṇ agi▫ānī karam ḏẖaram nahī jāṇā. Ḏa▫i▫ā karahu Nānak guṇ gāvai miṯẖā lagai ṯerā bẖāṇā. ||4||6||53||
I am (nirgun-u) bereft of virtues, (mugadh) silly, (ajaan-u) uninformed and (agiaani) ignorant; I do not (jaana) know what (karam) deeds are (dharam = righteous) good.
Please (karah-u = do/show, daiaa = compassion) be kind to enable me (gaavai = sing) to praise Your (gun) virtues and (mitthaa = sweet, lagai = seems) happily accept (teyra) Your (bhaana) will, says fifth Nanak. 4. 6. 53.
