Mārū mėhlā 5.  Sūraṯ ḏekẖ na bẖūl gavārā.  Mithan mohārā jẖūṯẖ pasārā.  Jag mėh ko▫ī rahaṇ na pā▫e nihcẖal ek nārā▫iṇā. ||1||

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Maaroo. Do not (bhool = go astray) get misled (deykh-i) seeing (soorat-i) looks, o (gavaara) uniformed person. This (pasaara = expanse) world-play is (jhootth-u = false) impermanent and hence (mohaara) attachment are (mithan = false) transitory.

(Na koee) no one (paaey) gets to (rahan-u) stay (mah-i) in (jag) the world – everyone has to die; (naaraaiaa) the Almighty (eyk-u = one) alone is (nihchal = unshakable) Eternal. 1.

Gur pūre kī pa▫o sarṇā▫ī.  Moh sog sabẖ bẖaram mitā▫ī.  Ėko manṯar driṛ▫ā▫e a▫ukẖaḏẖ sacẖ nām riḏ gā▫iṇā. ||2||

(Pau = fall down) place yourself in (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience (ki) of (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru; and (mittai = efface) get rid of (sabh-u) all (moh-u) attachment, (sog-u) sorrow and (bharam-u) wandering aimlessly.

The guru (drirraaey) creates firm understanding and commitment to this (eyko) one (mantr-u) mantra/instruction; (aukhadh-u) the medicine for all ills is to (gaainaa = sing) praise (naam-u) virtues and commands of (sach-u) the Eternal (rid) in mind and practice them. 2.

Jis nāmai ka▫o ṯarsėh baho ḏevā.  Sagal bẖagaṯ jā kī karḏe sevā.  Anāthā nāth ḏīn ḏukẖ bẖanjan so gur pūre ṯe pā▫iṇā. ||3||

The Almighty, (kau) for (jis-u) whose (Naamai) Naam (bahu) the numerous (deyva) gods (tarsah-i) long; and (ja ki) in whose (seyva = service) obedience (sagal) all (bhagat) devotees (kardey = perform) engage.

IT is (naath-u) the Master/support of (anaathaa) the master-less/hapless, (bhanjan-u) destroyer of (dukh) distress of (deen) the poor; awareness of Naam of (so) that is (paaina) obtained (tey) from (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru. 3.

Hor ḏu▫ārā ko▫e na sūjẖai.  Ŧaribẖavaṇ ḏẖāvai ṯā kicẖẖū na būjẖai.  Saṯgur sāhu bẖandār nām jis ih raṯan ṯisai ṯe pā▫iṇā. ||4||

I (soojhai = seems) see none (koey) other (duaara = house) to help. One who (dhaavai = runs) wanders (tribhavan) the three regions – water, land and space –, i.e. the whole world, (boojhai) understands (kichhoo na) nothing, i.e. gets no awareness of Naam.

(Satigur-u) the true guru is (saahu = financier) the source (jis-u) who has (bhanddar-u = store-house) treasure of awareness of Naam; (ih-u) this (ratan-u – jewel) valuable awareness of Naam can be (paaina) obtained (tey) from (tisai = that) the guru alone. 4.

Jā kī ḏẖūr kare punīṯā.  Sur nar ḏev na pāvahi mīṯā.  Saṯ purakẖ saṯgur parmesar jis bẖetaṯ pār parā▫iṇā. ||5||

One (ja ki) whose (dhoor-i) dust of feet/guidance (karey) makes one (puneeta) consecrated; (sur-i = like gods, nar = person) god-like people and (deyv) gods cannot (paavah-i) get that dust – guidance of the true guru – o friend.

That (purakh-u) person is (sat-i) the truthful (satigur-u) true guru, the embodiment of (parmeysar-u) Supreme Master, (bheyttat) finding and following (jis-u) whom one (praainaa = lands, paar-i = on far shore) gets across the world-ocean. 5.

Pārjāṯ loṛėh man pi▫āre.  Kāmḏẖen sohī ḏarbāre.  Ŧaripaṯ sanṯokẖ sevā gur pūre nām kamā▫e rasā▫iṇā. ||6||

O (piaarey) dear (man = mind) human being, you (lorrah-i) seek (paarjaat-u = the metaphoric wish-fulfilling tree) to fulfil your wishes; you wish that (kaamdheyn-u) the wish-fulfilling cow (sohi) adorns (darbaarey = court) your home, i.e. want fulfilment of wishes;

(Tripat-i) satisfaction and (santokh-u) contentment are attained with (seyva = service) obedience to (poorey) the perfect guru; we should obey him to (kamaaey) practice Naam, (rasaaina = house of relish) the source of joy. 6.

Gur kai sabaḏ marėh pancẖ ḏẖāṯū.  Bẖai pārbarahm hovėh nirmalā ṯū.  Pāras jab bẖetai gur pūrā ṯā pāras paras ḏikẖā▫iṇā. ||7||

(Panch) the five (dhaatoo) vices – lust, anger, greed, attachment to the world-play and vanity – (marah-i = die) are overcome by following (sabad-i = word of) teachings (kai) of (gur) the guru.

(Too) you can (hovah-i) become (nirmalaa = clean) free of vices (bhai = fear) with obedience to (paarbrahm) the Supreme – as taught by the guru.

(Jab) when one (bheyttai) meets and follows (poora) the perfect (gur) guru, (paaras-u – the stone that changes a base metal to gold by touch) who reforms base minds, (ta) then the (paras-i) touch/teaching of Paaras-guru (dikhaaina) shows the Almighty within. 7.

Experience of (kaee) numerous (baikuntth) heavens cannot (lavai laagai = come near) equal, (giaani) one who knows the self and finds God within and needs to (tiaagey = forsake) make no efforts (bhi) even for (bapurri) poor (mukat-i) emancipation.

(Eykankaar-u) the One all-pervasive Almighty (paaeeai) is found (tey = from) with guidance of (satigur) the true guru; I (bal-i bal-i = am sacrifice) would do anything to (darsaaina = sight) find and follow the guru. 8.

Gur kī sev na jāṇai ko▫ī.  Gur pārbarahm agocẖar so▫ī.  Jis no lā▫e la▫e so sevak jis vadbẖāg mathā▫iṇā. ||9||

(Na koi) no one (jaanai) knows the benefits of (seyv = service) obedience (ki) of (gur) the guru – one knows only by experience. The guru is the manifestation of (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being who is (agochar-u) not perceived by the senses.

Only (so) that person (seyvak-u = servant) obeys the Almighty (jis no) whom IT (laaey laey) engages in IT’s obedience; s/he is one (jis-u) who has (vaddbhaag) good fortune written (mathaaina) on the forehead by the Creator. 9.

Gur kī mahimā beḏ na jāṇėh.  Ŧucẖẖ māṯ suṇ suṇ vakāṇėh.  Pārbarahm aprampar saṯgur jis simraṯ man sīṯlā▫iṇā. ||10||

The writer of (beyd) the Vedas does not (jaanai) know (mahima = greatness) the exalted state of the guru. And has (vakhaanah-i = said) mentioned (tuchh maat) a bit after (sun-i sun-i) hearing others.

(Satigur) the true guru is the embodiment of (aprampar) the Infinite (paarbrahm) Supreme Being; (simrat) remembrance of (jis-u = whom) whose teachings, (man) the mind (seetlaaina = cooled) attains peace. 10.

Jā kī so▫e suṇī man jīvai.  Riḏai vasai ṯā ṯẖandẖā thīvai.  Gur mukẖahu alā▫e ṯā sobẖā pā▫e ṯis jam kai panth na pā▫iṇā. ||11||

The Almighty (suni) listening to (ja ki) whose (soey = praise) virtues, (man) the mind (jeevai = lives) is enlivened. If IT (vasai) abides (ridai) in the mind, (ta) then the mind (theevai = becomes, tthanddha = cool) experiences peace.

If one (allaaey = utters) praises – and emulates Divine virtues – (gur-mukhahu = from the guru’s mouth) as taught by the guru, (ta) then s/he (paaey) gets (sobha) glory here and in the hereafter; (tis-u) that person is not (paaina) put (panth-i) on path (kai) of, i.e. is not taken by, (jam) the agent of Divine justice, who puts erring souls in cycles of births and deaths. 11.

Sanṯan kī sarṇā▫ī paṛi▫ā.  Jī▫o parāṇ ḏẖan āgai ḏẖari▫ā.  Sevā suraṯ na jāṇā kā▫ī ṯum karahu ḏa▫i▫ā kirmā▫iṇā. ||12||

I have (parriaa) placed myself (sarnaai = in sanctuary) in care and guidance of (santan = saints) seekers of the Almighty. With their guidance, I have (dhariaa = placed, aagai = before) made offering of (jeeo) soul, (praan) life and (dhan-u) wealth to You, o Almighty.

I do not (jaana) know/have (kaai) any (surat-i) understanding of Your (seyva) service; (tum) You please (karhu = bestow, daiaa = kindness) be kind to this (kirmaaina) worm, i.e. give awareness of how to meet Your expectations. 12.

Nirguṇ ka▫o sang leho ralā▫e.  Kar kirpā mohi tahlai lā▫e.  Pakẖā fera▫o pīsa▫o sanṯ āgai cẖaraṇ ḏẖo▫e sukẖ pā▫iṇā. ||13||

O Almighty, please (leyhu ralaaey = cause to mix) lead this (nirgun kau) virtue-less person to the guru. (Kar-i kirpa) kindly (laaey) engage (moh-i) me (ttahlai = in service) in following his teachings.

I wish to (pheyrau) wave (pakhaa) the hand-held fan and (peesau = grind grain) serve food (aagai) before, i.e. serve food to, (sant) the guru and (dhoey) wash his (charan) feet – physically serve, and learn from the guru – and (paaina) experience (sukh-u) peace. 13.

Bahuṯ ḏu▫āre bẖaram bẖaram ā▫i▫ā.  Ŧumrī kirpā ṯe ṯum sarṇā▫i▫ā.  Saḏā saḏā sanṯėh sang rākẖo ehu nām ḏān ḏevā▫iṇā. ||14||

I have (aaiaa) come after (bhram-i bhram-i) wandering to (bahut-u) many (duaarai) gates/houses, i.e. after many births/life forms– where I did not find solace. (Tey) with (tumri) Your (kripa = kindness) grace I have placed myself in (tum) Your (sarnaaiaa = sanctuary) care and obedience.

Please (sadaa sadaa) forever (raakhau) keep me (sang-i) in company of (santah) the saints; and (deyvaaina) cause to be given/imparted (daan = alms) awareness of (naam) Divine virtues and commands by them. 14.

Bẖa▫e kirpāl gusā▫ī mere.  Ḏarsan pā▫i▫ā saṯgur pūre.  Sūkẖ sahj saḏā ānanḏā Nānak ḏās ḏasā▫iṇā. ||15||2||7||

(Gusaai = master of the world) the Almighty Master (meyrey = mine) of all was (kripaal) merciful and I (paaiaa) obtained, (darsan-u = sight) vision of the Almighty, (poorey) the prefect (satigur) true guru.

I fifth Nanak, (daas) the servant of (dasaaina) Your servants/devotees now (sadaa) ever experience (sookh) comfort/peace, (sahj) poise and (aananda) bliss. 15. 2. 7.

O (suaami) Master, You (karan) create and (karaavanhaar = cause to do) engage the creatures in their tasks; You (antarjaami) know (sagal) all (ghatta) minds.

One (jis-u) whom You (laavhu) engage in (bhagti = devotion) Your obedience; (so) that person (jinaa = wins) is successful in obtaining (padaarath-u = substance) fulfilment of the purpose of (janam-u) human birth – attains union with the Creator. 8.

One (ja kai) in whose (man-i) mind (prabh-u) the Master (apna = own) of all (voottha) abides; s/he, with (karam-i) with grace (poorai) of the all-pervasive Master (japna) obeys (japu = what is to be remembered) teachings of (gur) the guru.

S/he (jaata) deems (so = that) the one (prabh-u) Master present (nirantar-i) in (sarab) all creation; s/he does not (runaa) wail for being caused to (bharam-i = wander) wander in (joni) life-forms, i.e. is not born, (bahutt-i) again. 9.

One in (ja kai) whose (man-i) mind (sabad-u = word) teachings of (gur) the guru – to practice Naam – (vasai) abide. (Dookh-u = faults) wrong-doings and resultant (darad-u) pain – of separation from the Almighty, (ka) of (ta) that person (bhaagai = runs) ends.

S/he has (sookh) peace, (aanand) joy and (sahj) poise with (ras-u) love for Naam; (anhad) incessant (baani = words/sound) celestial messages and (dhuna) music with (sahj) poise play in the mind, i.e. one is permanently connected with God within. 10.

So ḏẖanvanṯā jin parabẖ ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.  So paṯivanṯā jin sāḏẖsang pā▫i▫ā.  Pārbarahm jā kai man vūṯẖā so pūr karammā nā cẖẖinā. ||11||

One (jin-i) who (dhiaaiaa) pays attention to commands of (prabh-u) the Almighty, (so) that person is (dhanvanta) wealthy, i.e. s/he has the lasting wealth of awareness of Naam for support here and in the hereafter. One (jin-i) who (paaiaa) obtains (saadhsang-u) company/guidance of the guru – where virtues of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to emulate – is (patvanta) honourable – because s/he is honourably accepted for union with the Almighty.

One (ja kai) in whose (man-i) mind (paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being (vootthaa) abides/remembered, (so) that person’s (karamma) objective is (poor) fulfilled; s/he is not (chhinaa) not deprived – of union with the Almighty. 11.

(Soee = that one) the same One (suaami) Master is present (jal-i) in water, (thal-i) in/on land and (maheeal-i) in space; we do not (kaheeai = say) see (koee) any (dooja = second) other.

(Anjan-i) the eye medicine of (giaan) awareness given by (gur) the guru (kaattio = has cut) removed (sagla) all (bhram-u) delusion; I (deesai = is seen) see (avar-u na) none other (binaa) except (eyk) the One everywhere. 12.

(Darbaara = court) authority of the Almighty is (oochaa) higher (tey) than (oochey) the highest. It has no (ant-u) limit or (paara) far end, i.e. is infinite.

(Suaami) the Master is (gahir) deep, (gambheer) profound and (athaah = bottomless) unfathomable; is (atul-u = un-weighable) beyond measure; it (kiaa) how can I (mina) measure when IT (na jaaee) cannot be measured. 13.

(Toohai) You alone are present (aad-i) from the beginning, (madh-i) through the middle and (ant-i) to the end, i.e. the creatures come and go but You are Eternal; (sagal) all this (pasaara) expanse is like a tree with (tum) You as (tanaa) the trunk, i.e. all creation is supported by You. 14.

(Jamdoot-u) the agent of Divine justice does not (aavai) come (nikatt-i) near (tis-u) that person who (gaavai = sings) praises (keertan-u = praise) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (saadhsang-i) in company/guidance of the guru – and emulates them.

(Sagal) all (manorath) aspirations (key) of (ta) that person are (pooran) fulfilled, (jo) who (sunaa) listens to (jas-u = praise) virtues of (prabh) the Almighty (sravni) with ears – and emulates them. 15.

Mārū solhe mėhlā 5  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition (solahey) of sixteen stanzas each of the fifth Guru in Raga Maaroo.    Invoking the one all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Āḏ niranjan parabẖ nirankārā.  Sabẖ mėh varṯai āp nirārā.  varan jāṯ cẖihan nahī ko▫ī sabẖ hukme sarisat upā▫iḏā. ||1||

(Nirankaara) the Formless (prabh-u) Almighty is (aad-i) the beginning of creation but (niranjan-u = unstained) untouched by it. IT (vartai) is present (mah-i) in (sabh) all but (niraara = separated) unattached to them.

IT has (nahi koee = not any) no (varan-u) class – like Brahminn, Khatri etc. – and no (jaat-i) caste; and no (chihan-u) sign of identification; IT (upaaida) creates (sabh) everything (sristt-i) in the universe (hukmey = with orders) at will. 1.

Lakẖ cẖa▫orāsīh jon sabā▫ī.  Māṇas ka▫o parabẖ ḏī▫ī vadi▫ā▫ī.  Is pa▫oṛī ṯe jo nar cẖūkai so ā▫e jā▫e ḏukẖ pā▫iḏā. ||2||

Out of (sabaaee) a total of (churaasih) eighty four lakh (jon-i) life-forms, (prabh-i) God (dee-ee) has given (vaddiaaee = greatness) supremacy (kau) to (maanas) the human form – as an opportunity to unite with God.

(Nar-u) the person (jo) who (chookai) misses (is-u) this (paurri = step on the ladder) opportunity – to attain union with God – (paaida) suffers (dukh-u) the pain of separation from God and being in cycles of (aaey = coming) births and (jaaey = going) deaths. 2.

Kīṯā hovai ṯis ki▫ā kahī▫ai.  Gurmukẖ nām paḏārath lahī▫ai.  Jis āp bẖulā▫e so▫ī bẖūlai so būjẖai jisahi bujẖā▫iḏā. ||3||

(Kiaa) why (kaheeai = say) praise or ask for help from one who (hovai) is (keeta) created – and depends on God. We should (laheeai) obtain awareness of (padaarath-u = substance) valuable (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands – the guide for life – (gurmukh-i) from the guru.

A person is born with awareness of Naam, (soi) only that person (bhoolai) forgets it (jis-u) whom the Creator (aap-i) IT-self (bhulaaey) causes to forget; and (so) that person (boojhai) remembers (jisah-i) whom (bujhaaida) causes to remember. 3.

Harakẖ sog kā nagar ih kī▫ā.  Se ubre jo saṯgur sarṇī▫ā.  Ŧarihā guṇā ṯe rahai nirārā so gurmukẖ sobẖā pā▫iḏā. ||4||

(Ih-u) this human body has been (keeaa) made (nagar = town) abode (ka) of (harakh) joys and (sog) sorrows, i.e. the human being does not submit to the will of the Almighty and experiences joy and sorrow. Those (jo) who place themselves in (sarneeaa = sanctuary) care and obedience of (satigur) the true guru, (sey) they – submit to Divine will and – (ubrey) rise above joy and sorrow.

One who (rahai) remains (niraara = separate) unaffected by (triha) the three (guna) attributes of egoistic nature – Tamas, Rajas and Sattva – (so) that person (paaida) obtains (sobha) glory – here and in the hereafter – by living (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance. 4.

Anik karam kī▫e bahuṯere.  Jo kījai so banḏẖan paire.  Kuruṯā bīj bīje nahī jammai sabẖ lāhā mūl gavā▫iḏā. ||5||

The human (keeay) performs (bahuteyrey) numerous (karam) rituals (anik) of many types. (Jo) whatever rituals one (keejai) does (so) that becomes (bandhan-u) the tether (pairey) on the feet, i.e. one gets attached to them and cannot get to God.

Rituals were applicable to the other ages not the present Kaliyug: If someone (beejey) sows (kuruta) un-seasonal (beej-u) seed, it does not (jammai) sprout and (sabh-u) all expected (laaha) profit, and even (mool-u = capital) investment – on seeds and effort – (gavaaida) is lost, i.e. one wastes effort put in for rituals and cannot get to God. 5.

Kaljug mėh kīrṯan parḏẖānā.  Gurmukẖ japī▫ai lā▫e ḏẖi▫ānā.

(Keertan-u) singing and emulating Divine virtues is (pardhaana = head) is the topmost/best means to find God (mah-i) in Kaliyug. We should (japeeai) make this a practice (laaey dhiaana) attentively (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru.

Āp ṯarai sagle kul ṯāre har ḏargėh paṯ si▫o jā▫iḏā. ||6||

One who does that (tarai = swims) gets across him/her-self, and (taarey) ferries (sagley) all (kul = lineage) associates, – across the world-ocean of vices – and (jaaida = goes) is received (dargah) in Divine court, i.e. is accepted for union with the Creator, (siau) with (pat-i) honour. 6.

Kẖand paṯāl ḏīp sabẖ lo▫ā.  Sabẖ kālai vas āp parabẖ kī▫ā.  Nihcẖal ek āp abẖināsī so nihcẖal jo ṯisėh ḏẖi▫ā▫iḏā. ||7||

(Sabh-i) all (khandd = parts of universe) continents, (pataal) nether regions and (deep) islands and (loaa) worlds; (prabh-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (keeaa) has made them (sabh-i) all, (vas-i = under control) subject (kaalai = to death) to destruction.

(Aap-i = self) the Almighty (eyk-u) alone is (nihchal-u = unshakable, abinaasi = imperishable) eternal and one (jo) who (dhiaaida) pays attention to (tisah-i = that) IT, (so) that person also becomes (nihchal-u) immortal – not subject to births and deaths. 7.

Har kā sevak so har jehā.  Bẖeḏ na jāṇhu māṇas ḏehā.  Ji▫o jal ṯarang uṯẖėh baho bẖāṯī fir sallai salal samā▫iḏā. ||8||

(Seyvak-u = servant) a seeker (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty – emulates Divine virtues and (so = that) s/he becomes (jeyha) like (har-i) the Almighty. Do not (jaanhu = consider) think there is any (bheyd-u) difference because s/he has (maanas) human (deyha) body/form – and God is formless.

(Jio) like (tarang) waves (uttah-i) rise in (bahu) many (bhaati) ways but are still (salal) water and (samaaida) merges (salalai) in water, similarly the obedient seeker is embodiment of the Creator and merges back in IT. 8.

Ik jācẖik mangai ḏān ḏu▫ārai.  Jā parabẖ bẖāvai ṯā kirpā ḏẖārai.  Ḏeh ḏaras jiṯ man ṯaripṯāsai har kīrṯan man ṯẖėhrā▫iḏā. ||9||

I (jaachik-u) the beggar (mangai) ask for this (ik-u) one (daan-u = alms) benediction at – awareness of Naam – (duaarai = at the gate) from the Master; but only (ja) when (bhaavai) it pleases (prabh) the Master, (ta) then IT (dhaarai) bestows (kirpa) kindness, i.e. kindly gives the benediction.

Please (deyhu = give) grant me (daras-u) vision – awareness of Your virtues and commands as guide for life – by (jit-u) which (man) the mind (triptaasai = satiated) remains happy; (man-i) the mind (tthahraaida) steadfastly (keertan-i) praises and emulates virtues of the Almighty. 9.

Rūṛo ṯẖākur kiṯai vas na āvai.  Har so kicẖẖ kare jė har ki▫ā sanṯā bẖāvai.  Kīṯā loṛan so▫ī karā▫in ḏar fer na ko▫ī pā▫iḏā. ||10||

(Roorro = handsome) beloved (tthaakur-u) Master does not (aavai) come (vas-i) under control (kitai) in any way, i.e. is independent. But (har-i) the Almighty (karey) does (so kichh-u) that (j-i) what (bhaavai) is liked by, i.e. listens to (santaa = saints) devotees of the Almighty.

Whatever they (lorran-i) want they get (soi) that (karaain-i) done; God does not (pher-i paaida) turn down (koi) anything asked (dar-i = at the court) from IT. 10.

Jithai a▫ugẖat ā▫e banaṯ hai parāṇī. ||11||

(Jithai) wherever (aughatt-u) a difficult situation (aaey banat = happens) confronts (praani) the mortal; (tithai) there one should (dhiaaeeai) invoke (har-i) the Almighty (saaringpaani = provider of water to the rain-bird) Sustainor.

The hereafter (jithai) where (putr-u = son) children, (kalatr-u) spouse, (na koi = not any) no one (beyli = friend) can help; (tithai) there (har-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (chhaddaaida) delivers from the difficulty – of being put in cycles of births and deaths. 11.

vadā sāhib agam athāhā.  Ki▫o milī▫ai parabẖ veparvāhā.  Kāt silak jis mārag pā▫e so vicẖ sangaṯ vāsā pā▫iḏā. ||12||

Question: (Vaddaa) the great (sahib-u) Master is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (athaaha = bottomless) unfathomable. (Kio) how do we (miliai) find (veyparvaaha = carefree) the highest (prabh) Master?

Answer: One (jis-u) whom IT (kaatt-i = cuts, silak = rope/noose) releases from attachments to the world-play, and (paaey) puts (maarag-i) on the path to IT-self, (so) that person (paaida = obtains, vaasa = residence, vich-i = in) joins (sangat-i) holy congregation – where virtues of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to emulate – that is how the Almighty is found. 12.

Hukam būjẖai so sevak kahī▫ai.  Burā bẖalā ḏu▫e samsar sahī▫ai.  Ha▫umai jā▫e ṯa eko būjẖai so gurmukẖ sahj samā▫iḏā. ||13||

(Seyvak-u = servant) a devotee of the Almighty is one who (boojhai) understands and submits to (hukam-u = command) will of the Almighty; s/he (saheeai = bears) accepts (buraa = bad) discomfort (bhalaa = good) comfort (samsara-i) equally.

When (haumai) ego/self-will (jaaey) leaves (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, (ta) then one (boojhai) understands that there is only (eyko) only One authority, and remains (sahaj-i) effortlessly (samaaida) absorbed in obedience to the Almighty. 13.

Har ke bẖagaṯ saḏā sukẖvāsī.  Bāl subẖā▫e aṯīṯ uḏāsī.  Anik rang karahi baho bẖāṯī ji▫o piṯā pūṯ lādā▫iḏā. ||14||

(Bhagat) devotes (key) of (har-i) the Almighty are (sadaa) ever (sukhvaasi = residents of comfort) at peace. They remain (baal = child, subhaaey = nature of) innocently (ateet) unattached and (udaasi) withdrawn – from attachments to the world-play.

They (karah-i = do, rang = plays) experience joy in (bahu) many (bhaati) ways (jio) like (pitaa) the father (laaddaaida) pampers (poot-u = son) the child – and have no worries being in care of the Almighty. 14.

Agam agocẖar kīmaṯ nahī pā▫ī.  Ŧā milī▫ai jā la▫e milā▫ī.  Gurmukẖ pargat bẖa▫i▫ā ṯin jan ka▫o jin ḏẖur masṯak lekẖ likẖā▫iḏā. ||15||

The Almighty is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (agochar-u) not perceived by the senses; one cannot (paai = put, keemat-i = price) know/appraise IT. We can (miliai) meet IT (ta) then (ja) when IT (laey milaaey) leads to IT-self.

IT (pragatt-u = manifest, bhaiaa = is) manifests (kau) to (tin) those (jan = servants) seekers in (jin) whose (mastak-i = forehead) destiny IT (likhaaida) writes (leykh-u = writing) this to happens (dhur-i = from source) IT-self – based on deeds. 15.

Ŧū āpe karṯā kāraṇ karṇā.  Sarisat upā▫e ḏẖarī sabẖ ḏẖarṇā.  Jan Nānak saraṇ pa▫i▫ā har ḏu▫ārai har bẖāvai lāj rakẖā▫iḏā. ||16||1||5||

O Almighty, (too) You are (aapey) Yourself (karta) the Creator who (karna) created (kaaran) the creation. You (upaaey) created (sristt-i) the universe and (dhari) located (sabh) everything (dharna) with Your support.

(Jan) humble fifth Nanak (paiaa) has placed the self (saran-i) in sanctuary (duaarai = at the gate) of the Almighty; may (har-i) the Almighty (bhaavai) be pleased to (rakhaaida) preserve my (laaj) honor, i.e. accept me as IT’s own and unite with IT-self. 16. 1. 5.

Composition (solahey) of sixteen stanzas each of the fifth Guru in Raga Maaroo.    Invoking the one all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Jo ḏīsai so eko ṯūhai.  Baṇī ṯerī sarvaṇ suṇī▫ai.  Ḏūjī avar na jāpas kā▫ī sagal ṯumārī ḏẖārṇā. ||1||

(Jo) whatever (deesai) is seen, (so) that is (toohai) You (eyko) alone, i.e. the Almighty is present in everything/everyone. We should (suneeai) listen to (teyri) Your (baani = words) commands (sravan-i) with the ears.

(Sagal) all existence relies on (tumaari) Your (dhaarna) support; there does no (jaapas-i) seem to be (dooji = second, avar = other) any other support. 1.

Āp cẖiṯāre apṇā kī▫ā.  Āpe āp āp parabẖ thī▫ā.  Āp upā▫e racẖi▫on pasārā āpe gẖat gẖat sārṇā. ||2|

(Aap-i = self) the Creator (chitaarey = brings to mind) watches (apna = own) IT’s (keeaa) creation. IT has (aapey aap-i) IT-self (theeaa) become, i.e. is present in, everything.

The Creator (upaaey) created (aap-i) the self and (rachion) created this (pasaara) expanse and (saarna = takes care) knows what is there (ghatt-i ghat-i) in every body/mind. 2.

Ik upā▫e vad ḏarvārī.  Ik uḏāsī ik gẖar bārī.

The Creator (upaaey) created (ik-i = one type) some persons as (vadd = great, darvaari = with court) powerful with pomp; (ik-i) some (udaasi) withdrawn from the world and some (ghar baari) as householders.

Ik bẖūkẖe ik ṯaripaṯ agẖā▫e sabẖsai ṯerā pārṇā. ||3||

(Ik-i) some (bhookhey = hungry) have wants and some (tripat-i aghaaey = satiated) have plenty; (sabhsai) all have (teyra) Your (paarna) support – are sustained by You. 3.

Āpe saṯ saṯ saṯ sācẖā.  Oṯ poṯ bẖagṯan sang rācẖā.  Āpe gupaṯ āpe hai pargat apṇā āp pasārṇā. ||4||

(Aapey = self) the Almighty (sat-i = true/exists – thrice) was, is and shall be a reality – is eternal. IT is (raachaa = gets used to) present (sang-i) with (bhagtan) the devotees like (ot-i = warp) the length-wise and (pot-i = woof) across yarns in a woven fabric.

Is (aapey) IT-self (gupat-u = hidden) within everyone as well as (pargatt-u = manifest) visible existence; IT has (pasaarna) spread (aapna aap-u) IT-self everywhere. 4.

The Creator (hovanhaara) exists (sadaa, sadaa, sad = forever) in all three ages – past, present and future. But is unseen, being (oochaa) high, (agam-u) beyond reach/comprehension, (athaah-u = bottomless) profound and (apaara) Infinite.

(Bharey) fills (ooney) empty ones and (bharey bhar-i) having filled makes (ooney) them empty, i.e. the Almighty can provide to the deprived and deprive the affluent; (eh-i) these are (chalat) plays (kaarna) done (key = of) by (suaami) the Master. 5.

Mukẖ sālāhī sacẖe sāhā.  Naiṇī pekẖā agam athāhā.  Karnī suṇ suṇ man ṯan hari▫ā mere sāhib sagal uḏẖāraṇā. ||6||

Those who (saalaahi) praise – and emulate virtues of – (sachey) the Eternal; they (peykhaa) see/have vision of Master who is otherwise (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and is (athaaha) unfathomable.

And those who (sun-i sun-i) listen to IT’s virtues (karni) with the ears, cause their (man) mind and (tan-u) body (hariaa = green) bloom; (sahib) the Master (meyrey = my) of all, (udhaarna) emancipates (sagal) all of them. 6.

Kar kar vekẖėh kīṯā apṇā.  Jī▫a janṯ so▫ī hai japṇā.  Apṇī kuḏraṯ āpe jāṇai naḏrī naḏar nihālaṇā. ||7||

The Creator (kar-i kar-i) creates and (veykhah-i) watches (aapna = own) IT’s (keetaa = doing) creation. (Jeea jant) the creatures (japna) remember and obey (soi = that) IT.

(Aapey) IT-self (jaanai) knows (apni = own) IT’s (kudrat-i) creation and (nihaalna) looks at all (nadri = with sight, nadar-i = grace) graciously, i.e. bestows grace. 7.

Sanṯ sabẖā jah baisėh parabẖ pāse.  Anand mangal har cẖalaṯ ṯamāse.  Guṇ gāvahi anhaḏ ḏẖun baṇī ṯah Nānak ḏās cẖiṯāraṇā. ||8||

Wherever there is (sabhaa) congregation of (sant = saints) seekers, (prabh) the Almighty (baisah-i = sits) is present (paasey) with them. They have (anad managal) joy seeing (chalat tamaasey) plays/feats of (har-i) the Almighty.

They (gaavah-i = sing) praise and emulate virtues of the Master and experience (anhad) incessant celestial (dhun-i) music – connect with God in their minds; may I, (daas-u = servant) humble fifth Nanak (chitaarna) remember You (tah = there) in their company. 8.

Āvaṇ jāṇā sabẖ cẖalaṯ ṯumārā.  Kar kar ḏekẖai kẖel apārā.  Āp upā▫e upāvaṇhārā apṇā kī▫ā pālṇā. ||9||

(Aavan-u = coming) births and (jaana = going) death is (sabh-u) all (tumaara) Your (chalat) play. (Apaara) the Infinite (kar-i kar-i) creates and (dekhai) watches (kheyl-u) the play.

(Aap-i = self) the Almighty (upaavanhaara) Creator (upaaey) creates and (paalna = nurtures) looks after (aapna = = own) IT’s (keeaa) creation. 9.

Suṇ suṇ jīvā so▫e ṯumārī.  Saḏā saḏā jā▫ī balihārī.  Ḏu▫e kar joṛ simra▫o ḏin rāṯī mere su▫āmī agam apāraṇā. ||10||

I (sun-i sun-i) listen to (soey = glory) praise of (tumaari) Your virtues – try to emulate them – and thus (jeeva) live, i.e. do not fall prey to vices. I (sadaa sadaa) forever (jaai balihaari = am sacrifice) adore You.

I (jorr-i) fold (duey) both (kar) hands and (simrau) remember, i.e. live by Your virtues and commands (din-u) day and (raati) night, o (meyrey) my (suaami) Master, You are (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (apaarna) Infinite. 10.

Ŧuḏẖ bin ḏūje kis sālāhī.  Ėko ek japī man māhī. Hukam būjẖ jan bẖa▫e nihālā ih bẖagṯā kī gẖālṇā. ||11||

I (saalaahi) praise – and obey – (kis-u = who?) no one (bin-u) except (tudh-u) You. I (japi) remember and obey (eyko eyk-u = only one) You alone (maahi) in my (man) mind.

(Ghaalna = toil) effort of (bhagta) the devotees is (ih) this: They try to (boojh-i) understand Your (hukam-u) commands – obey them – and (bhaey) are (nihaala) happy doing so. 11.

Gur upḏes japī▫ai man sācẖā.  Gur upḏes rām rang rācẖā.  Gur upḏes ṯutėh sabẖ banḏẖan ih bẖaram moh parjālaṇā. ||12||

We should (japeeai) contemplate commands of (saachaa) the Eternal (man-i) in mind with (updeys-i) with teachings of (gur) the guru. With the guru’s teachings one (raachaa = getting used) leads life (rang-i) in love/obedience of (raam) the all-pervasive Master.

(Sabh-i) all (bandhan = bonds) attachments to vices in the world-play (tuttah-i) break with the guru’s teachings; (ihu) this (bharam-u) wandering in (moh-u) attachment to the world-play is (parjaalna = fully burnt) totally broken. 12.

Jah rākẖai so▫ī sukẖ thānā.  Sėhje ho▫e so▫ī bẖal mānā.  Binse bair nāhī ko bairī sabẖ eko hai bẖālṇā. ||13||

At (jah) wherever (thaana) place, i.e. in whatever state, the Almighty (raakhai) keeps, (soee) that is (sukh) comfortable. Whatever (hoey) happens (sahjey = naturally) by God’s will, that should (maana) be accepted as (bhal) good.

All (bair = enmity) antagonism should (binsey = destroyed) end with (naahi ko = not any) no (bairi) enemy; we should (bhaalna = search) see (eyko) the One Almighty in (sabh-u) everyone. 13.

Dar cẖūke binse anḏẖi▫āre.  Pargat bẖa▫e parabẖ purakẖ nirāre.  Āp cẖẖod pa▫e sarṇā▫ī jis kā sā ṯis gẖālṇā. ||14||

When (andhiaarey) darkness – the ignorance that God is not within us – (binsey = destroyed) is removed from the mind – with the guru’s guidance, then (purakh) the all-pervasive (prabh) Almighty who (niraarey = separated) seemed far (bhaey = is, pragatt = manifest) is seen within.

One then (chhodd-i) gives up (aap-u = self) ego and (paey) places the self (sarnaaee = sanctuary) in care of, and (ghaalna = toils) obeys the Creator (jis ka) whose creation s/he is. 14.

Aisā ko vadbẖāgī ā▫i▫ā.  Āṯẖ pahar jin kẖasam ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.  Ŧis jan kai sang ṯarai sabẖ ko▫ī so parvār saḏẖāraṇā. ||15||

(Ko) some rare (aisa) such (vaddbhaagi) fortunate person (aaiaa = comes) is born; (jin-i) who (dhiaaiaa = pays attention) lives in remembrance and obedience of (khasam) the Master, (aatth = eight, pahar = three hour periods – 24 hours) all the time.

(Sabh-u koi) everyone (tarai = swims) gets across the world-ocean (sang-i) in company (kai) of (tis-u) that (jan) person, who becomes (sadhaarna) support for (parvaar) his/her family – all associates. 15.

Ih bakẖsīs kẖasam ṯe pāvā.  Āṯẖ pahar kar joṛ ḏẖi▫āvā.  Nām japī nām sahj samāvā nām Nānak milai ucẖāraṇā. ||16||1||6||

May I (paava) receive (ih) this (bakhsees) benediction (tey) from (khasam) the Master: That I (dhiaava = pay attention to) obey the Almighty (jorr-i) with folded (kar) hands (aatth pahar) round the clock, i.e. in all activities.

May I (japi) practice (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands, and remain (sahj-i) steadfastly (samaava) absorbed (naam-i) in Naam; and that I (milai) get the ability to (uchaarna = utter) remember and practice Naam, says fifth Nanak. 16. 1. 6.
