Those (jin) who (parsiaa) saw and listened to, (gur-u) the great (poora) perfect (satiguru) true Guru, they (naas = destroyed) overcame and (gavaaiaa) dispelled ideas of (kilvikh) transgressions/wrong-doings from their minds.

(Duteeaa = second) next (gur-i) the Guru (gaey) went to (jamun) Yamuna river and (keeaa = did, japan-u = praise, har-i har-i = God) gave discourses on Naam or Divine virtues and commands.

The authorities used to charge for ferrying people across the river, but now (jaagaati) the tax-collectors (miley) met and (dey) gave (bheytt) offerings, i.e. showed respect to the guru, and (langhaaey deeaa) ferried everyone who (pichhai = behind) followed (gur) the Guru, free.

(Sabh) all those (jin) who (pichhai = behind) followed (satiguru) the true guru, (chhutti = delivered) were spared from paying for getting across the river as they (dhiaaiaa) uttered (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty – like the Sikhs.

Similarly those (jo) who (chaaley) walk on (panth-i, maarag) the path (bachan-i = by words) taught by (gur) the guru, (jam) the agent of Divine justice (jaagaati) tax-collector, i.e. who imposes punishment on wrong-doers, does not (aaiaa) come (neyrr-i) near, them.

(Sabh) all creatures of (sabh) the whole (jagat-u) world who (bolai) say guru guru, i.e. follow the guru, they (chhuttak-i gaiaa) remain free of the Jam by (laiaai = uttering, naaey = naam) remembering and practicing Naam as taught by the guru.

(Duteeaa = second) next (gur-i) the Guru (gaey) went to (jamun) Yamuna river and (keeaa = did, japan-u = praise, har-i har-i = God) gave discourses on Naam or Divine virtues and commands. 4.

(Triteeaa) thirdly, the Guru (aaey) came to (sursari) the river Ganga/Ganges, where (kautak-u) a wondrous (chalat-u = play) thing (bhaiaa) happened.

(Sabh) everyone there was (mohi) enchanted (deykh-i) seeing (darsan-u) the sight of, and listening to, (gur sant) the saint Guru; (kisa na) no one (laiaa = took) received not even (aaddh-u) a bit of (daam) money, i.e. no one went to Pandits/priests to ask to perform rituals and pay them.

(Kichh-u na = not any) not even (aaddh-u daam) a pittance (paiaa) was put in their (bolak/golak) money boxes; and (jagaateeaa = tax collectors) the priests (paee = happened) were (mohan mundan-i) dumb-founded.

They said, (bhaai) brethren, (kiaa) what can (ham) we (karah) do, (paas-i) from (kis-u) whom do we (maangah) ask, (sabh) all (bhaag-i) are running (paee = put, pichhai = behind) to (satigur) the true guru.

(Jaagaateeaa = tax collectors) the priests (siaanap = wisdom/reflection, kar-i = did) reflected and (dditthaa = saw) realized that no one would come to them as long as the guru was present there, so they (upaav = method) decided to (bhann-i = break) pick up (bolka) money boxes and (sabh-i) all (utth-i) got up and (gaiaa) left.

(Triteeaa) thirdly, the Guru (aaey) came to (sursari) the river Ganga/Ganges, and (kautak-u) a wondrous (chalat-u = play) thing (bhaiaa) happened. 5.

(Mahaa = great) important (janaa) persons of (nagar) the town (mil-i) together (aaey) came and (gahi) took (ott) protection, i.e. paid obeisance, to (gur) the great (satigur-u) true Guru.

They (puchh-i) asked (gur-u) the great (satigur-u) true guru and he (keetaa = made, sahi = correct) made them to understand from the Smritis that (gur-u) the guru is embodiment of (govid/gobind = master of the world) the Almighty.

(Sabhni) everyone (sahi keeta) correctly understood that according to Smritis and Shastras, Suk/Sukhdev, Prahlad, and (sriraam-i) revered Rama of the Ramayana (dhiaaiaa) invoked (gur) the guru (kar-i = deeming) as (govid-u) the Almighty.

There are (panch) five (chor) thieves, (vattvaarey = highway robbers) vices – namely lust, anger, greed, attachment to the world-play and vanity (deyhi = body, nagar = town) within; the guru’s teachings (gavaaiaa = lost) removed (tin ka) their (thaau theyhu = place/habitation) presence, dispelled from their minds.

Earlier there used to be (keertan) singing and discourses on the Puranas and importance of (punn) good deeds based on superstitions but now they (lahi) took/learnt (bhagat-i = devotion) living by virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty according to (bachn-i = through words) teachings of (gur) Guru Nanak.

(Mahaa = great) important (janaa) persons of (nagar) the town (mil-i) together (aaey) came and (gahi) took (ott) protection, i.e. paid obeisance, to (gur) the great (satigur-u) true Guru. 6. 4. 10.

O (laalna) Beloved Almighty, I (ghol-i) have dissolved my ego and (ghumaai = circumambulate) respectfully (deena = given) dedicated my (man-u) mind to You – with guidance – (gur-i) of the guru.

(Meyra) my (man-u) mind (bheenaa = rinsed) is happy (sun-i) to listen to, and obey, (tumaara) Your (sabad-u = word) commands – as made aware by the guru.

(Jiau) like (meena) the fish is happy to get in (jal) water, (ihu = this) my (man-u) mind is (bheena) happy (laaga) with Your (rang-u) love, o (muraara) Almighty.

(Teyra) Your (mahal-u = palace) Being is (apaara) infinite; (keemat-i = price) worth/extent of Your Naam, i.e. virtues and powers, (na jaaee) cannot be (kahan = told) estimated.

O (suaami) Master, You are (daatey = giver) the source of (sagal) all (gunaa) virtues; please (sunhu) listen to (ik = one) this (binau) supplication of (deena) this poor seeker.

My (jeearra) soul (bal-i bal-i = sacrifice, keena = made) adores You, please (deyhu = give) grant (daras-u) vision, i.e. impart awareness of Your virtues and commands – so that I can live by them, says fifth Nanak. 1.

(Ihu = this) my (tan-u) body and (man-u) mind/soul are (teyra = your) given by You; (sabh-i) all (gun = virtues) capabilities are (teyrey –your) in Your hands.

I (vanjna) am ready (khaneeai = be cut into pieces) to do anything You direct.

(Teyra) Your Naam (suneejai = heard) is known to (amrit) be like a life-giving elixir; when You (karah-i = do/show, kirpa = kindness) are kind to give, (ta) then I (peeva) drink the elixir, i.e. I can live by Your Naam when You graciously enable.

Says the soul-wife: I (aas = wish, piaasi = thirsty) yearn (kai taai) for You, (pir) the Beloved, (jio) like (chaatrik) the rain-bird yearns (boondeyrey) for the drop of rain – to fall in its mouth.

Almighty, my (jeeaarra) soul (balihaari = is sacrifice) adores You, please (deyhu = give) grant me (daras-u) vision, i.e. grant me awareness of Your virtues and commands, (kahu = say) prays fifth Nanak. 2.

(Too) You are (saachaa) the Eternal (sahib-u) Master, (saahu = financier) rich (amita) beyond measure, i.e. source of unlimited virtues.

(Too) You are (piaara) the Beloved (preetam-u = dear husband) benevolent Master (hit = for) of my (praan) life and (chitaa) heart.

(Praani) the creature (kamaavai) carries out (soi) those (karam) deeds (jeyha) as (too) You (phurmaaey = order) direct, i.e. You allotted the roles in life to the creatures and motivate them from within.

(Tau) You (ditaa) gave (jeeo) the soul and (pindd-u) body; my (jeearraa) soul (balihaari = is sacrifice) adores You, says fifth Nanak. 3.

The Almighty (raakh-i leeaa) saved this (nirgun-u) virtue-less person (sadka) by grace/guidance of, i.e. by enabling to follow (santan = saints) the guru.

(Satigur-i) the true guru (ddhaak-i leeaa = covered) provided (parrdaa) curtain for, saved the reputation of (moh-i) me, (paapi) a wrong-doer, i.e. enabled me to be rid of transgressions.

Ŧukẖārī cẖẖanṯ mėhlā 4  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Tukhaari, (chhant) song of yearning for the Almighty.   Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Anṯar pirī pi▫ār ki▫o pir bin jīvī▫ai rām.  Jab lag ḏaras na ho▫e ki▫o amriṯ pīvī▫ai rām.

When the soul-wife has (piaar-u) love (piri) for the Almighty-husband (anatar-i = inside) in the heart, it is (kiau = how?) not possible for her to (jeeveeai) live (bin-u) without (pir) the beloved Almighty.

It is (kiau = how?) not possible to (peeveeai = drink, amrit-u = life-giving elixir) be happy (jab lag) as long as (daras-u = sight) vision of the Beloved Almighty is (na hoey) not obtained within.

Ki▫o amriṯ pīvī▫ai har bin jīvī▫ai ṯis bin rahan na jā▫e.  An▫ḏin pari▫o pari▫o kare ḏin rāṯī pir bin pi▫ās na jā▫e.

(Kiau = how?) one cannot (amrit peeveeai) be happy/at peace, (jeeveeai = live) not succumbing to vices (bin-u) without (har-i) the Almighty in mind; it is (na jaaey) not possible to (rahan-u) live – a life free of vices (bin-u) without – awareness of virtues and commands of – (tis-u = that) the One Almighty in  mind.

The soul-wife (karey = utters) remembers (prio prio) the Beloved Almighty-husband (din = day, raati = night) all the time.

Message: One cannot overcome vices in the world-play and find the Almighty on one’s own. It is possible only when the Almighty leads to, and one obeys, the guru.

O (piaarey) Beloved (har-i) Almighty, (karhu = bestow, kripa = kindness) kindly grant the benediction that I (sad) ever (saariaa) keep in mind Your (har-i = dispels vices) purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands.

The Almighty was kind to lead me to the guru, (mai) I obeyed (sabad-i = word of) teachings of the guru and was able to (miliaa) find (preetam-u) the Beloved Almighty; (hau) I (vaariaa = am sacrifice, vittahu = for) killed my ego and obey (satigur) the true guru. 1.

(Jahaa) wherever I (deykhaa-n) look, (piaara) the Beloved (pir-u) Almighty-husband is present and I (ravaa = utter) praise (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (ras-i) with relish.

Merai anṯar ho▫e vigās pari▫o pari▫o sacẖ niṯ cẖavā rām.

There (hoey = happens) is (vigaas-u = blossom) joy (meyrai) in my (antar-i = inside) mind when I (nit) ever (chavaa = utter) remember (sach-u = truth) the Eternal (prio prio) beloved, i.e. there is peace in mind – as there are no apprehensions – when one has virtues and commands of the Almighty in mind, and commits no vices.

Pari▫o cẖavā pi▫āre sabaḏ nisṯāre bin ḏekẖe ṯaripaṯ na āv▫e.  Sabaḏ sīgār hovai niṯ kāmaṇ har har nām ḏẖi▫āv▫e.

I (chavaa = utter) keep in mind – virtues and commands of – (piaarey) the Beloved (prio) Almighty-husband; obedience (sabad-i = to the word) to commands of the Almighty (nistaarey) ferries one across the world-ocean of vices to God; (tript-i = satisfaction) happiness does not (aavaey) come (bin-u) without (deykhey = seeing) vision of the Almighty – until other ideas are dispelled from the mind.

IT reveals IT-self to (kaaman-i = woman) the soul-wife who (nit) ever (hovai) has/wears (seegaar-u) the adornment (sabad-i = of word) of practice of Divine virtues and commands which is to (dhiaavaey) pay attention to and emulate (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty.

Please lead me to the guru so that I learn and (andin-u) ever (dhiaaee) pay attention to commands of You, (gur-u) the great (gopaal-u = nurturer of the world) Almighty as taught by the guru; (ham) I shall (ghumaaey = sacrifice, vittahu = to) have shed ego and respectfully obey (satigur) true guru. 2.

(Ham) I am (paathar = stone) weighed down by vices, (gur-u) the guru is (naav) the boat that (taareeai) ferries across (bhavjal-u) the world-ocean of (bikh-u) vices.

Please (deyvhu) give me the sense to (subhaaey) lovingly carry out (sabad-u = word) instructions of (gur) the guru so that (mai) I (moorr) a foolish/erring person (nistaareaai) get across the world-ocean – to You.

(Ham) I (niguni) am bereft of virtues, i.e. have no capability, and am (nimaaniaa = honour-less) without any status; (too) You are (daiaal-u) compassionate; (aap-i) You please (kar-i = bestow, daiaa = kindness) be kind and (meylah-i) unite with Yourself..

Please (karhu = bestow, daiaa = compassion) be kind and (rakh-i leyvhu) save me, o (jeeo) revered (har-i) Almighty; lead me to the guru, so that (ham) I (laagah = attach to, paaey = feet) submit to teachings of (satigur) the true guru who can lead me to You. 3.

The guru (milaaey) united my (joti) soul (jot-i) with the Supreme Spirit, my (kaaiaa = body, garr-u = fort) being has become glorified, i.e. the guru enabled me to live by Divine virtues and commands and made me acceptable to You.

IT is (adristt-u) unseen and (agochar) not perceived by the senses, but (pakrriaa = held) is found within (sabdi = with word) with guidance of (gur) the guru; (hau) I (balihaareeai = am sacrifice, kau = to) adore (satigur) the true guru.

You please (aapey) Yourself (karahu = bestow, daiaa = kindness) be kind, o (daatey = giver) benevolent (prabh) Almighty so that this seeker (samaavai = enters, ank-i = in limbs) is embraced, i.e. my soul merges with You, prays fourth Nanak. 4. 1.
