Bẖairo mėhlā 5.  Nām hamārai beḏ ar nāḏ.  Nām hamārai pūre kāj.  Nām hamārai pūjā ḏev.  Nām hamārai gur kī sev. ||1||

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bhairau. (Hamaarai) for me as a Sikh, compliance with (naam-u) practice of Divine commands replaces (beyd = Vedas) scriptural knowledge and (naad = sound/music) singing in temples. Practice of Naam (poorey) accomplishes my (kaaj) purpose of life to find the Almighty.

(Hamaarai) for me practice of Naam replaces (pooja) worship of (deyv) deities. Naam is practiced with (seyv = service) guidance of (gur) the guru. 1.

Gur pūrai ḏariṛa▫o har nām.  Sabẖ ṯe ūṯam har har kām. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Poorai) the perfect/real (gur-i) guru (drirraaio) creates firm commitment to compliance of Naam; living by (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating commands of the Almighty is (ootam-u) the most sublime (kaam-u = job) practice (tey) of (sabh) all. 1.

(Rhaaau) pause and reflect on this.

Nām hamārai majan isnān.  Nām hamārai pūran ḏān.  Nām laiṯ ṯe sagal pavīṯ.  Nām japaṯ mere bẖā▫ī mīṯ. ||2||

Naam (hamaarai) for me practice of Naam repalces (majan = dip, isnaan-u = bath) bathing at pilgrimages; for me practice of Naam is (pooran) perfect (daan-u) charity, i.e. I prefer practice of Naam to performance of rituals.

(Sagal) all (tey) those who (lait = utter) remember and practice Naam, (tey) they are (paveet) purified of vices. Those who (japat) remember and practice Naam are (meyrey) my (bhaaee) brethren and (meet) friends, i.e. I love them. 2.

Nām hamārai sa▫uṇ sanjog.  Nām hamārai ṯaripaṯ subẖog.  Nām hamārai sagal ācẖār.  Nām hamārai nirmal bi▫uhār. ||3||

People rely on the concept of somethings/days/times being (saun-u) auspicious and (sanjog) get astrological calculations done for auspicious times, but (hamaarai) for me practice of Naam makes every moment auspicious. For me Naam is eating (tripat-i) satisfying (subhog) good food dishes.

For me Naam is above (sagal) all (aachaar) rituals etc. For me practice of Naam is (nirmal) clean/good (biohaar) conduct. 3.

Jā kai man vasi▫ā parabẖ ek.  Sagal janā kī har har tek.  Man ṯan Nānak har guṇ gā▫o.  Sāḏẖsang jis ḏevai nā▫o. ||4||22||35||

Those in (ja kai) whose (man-i) mind (eyk-u) only the One (prabh-u) Almighty (vasiaa = abides) remembered; living by (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam is (tteyk = support) mainstay of (sagal) all those (janaa) persons.

(Gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (man-i = in mind) in thought and (tan-i = with body) actions; this is done by one (jis-u) whom God (deyvai) imparts awareness of (naau) Naam (saadhsang-i) through company-guidance of the guru. 4. 22. 35.

Bẖairo mėhlā 5.  Nirḏẖan ka▫o ṯum ḏevhu ḏẖanā.  Anik pāp jāhi nirmal manā.  Sagal manorath pūran kām.  Bẖagaṯ apune ka▫o ḏevhu nām. ||1||

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bhairau. O Almighty, (tum) You (deyvhu) give (dhanaa) wealth to (nirdhan) poor, i.e. impart awareness of Your Naam to those who forget. (Anik = numerous) all his/her (paap) vices (jaah-i) leave and s/he develops (nirmal) a clean (manaa) mind.

(Sagal) all (manorath) aspirations and (kaam = job, work) objectives of that person are (pooran) fulfilled; You (deyvahu) give the wealth of awareness of Naam to (apuney = own) Your this (bhagat) devotees – and they attain union with You. 1.

(Seyva = service) obedience to commands of (raaey = king) the Sovereign (gopal = sustainer of the world) Almighty is (saphal) fruitful

(Suaami) the Master (karaavanhaar) causes to do what is (karan) to be done; (koey na) no one (jaaey) goes (birtha) empty-handed (tey) from (ta) that, i.e. all those who obey the Almighty benefit. 1.

(Rhaaau) pause and reflect on this.

O (prabh) Almighty, You (khanddahu = break) relieve (rog-u) ailment (ka) of (rogi) an ill person, i.e. remove shortcomings of one who places the self in Your care. And thus (mittaavhu = erase) remove (sog-u) sorrow of (dukhee-ey) of one in distress.

(Tum) You (baitthaavu = cause to seat) give solace (kau) to (nithaavey = without place) a hapless person; You (laavahu) engage (kau = to, apuney = own) Your (daas = servant) seeker to (bhagti) devotion, i.e. practice of Your virtues and commands which enable union with You. 2.

O (prabh) Almighty, You (devhau = give) bring (maan-u) recognition/honour (kau) to (nimaaney) an honour-less person – through practice of Naam. (Moorr mugadh-u = fool) an ignorant person (hoey) becomes (chatur) wise with (sugiaan-u = good knowledge) awareness of Naam.

(Bhau) fear of having to face (sagal) all (bhaiaan) terrifying situations (nasai = runs) leaves as (har-i) the Almighty (basai = abides) is always remembered by (apnaey = own) IT’s (jan = servant) seeker. 3.

Pārbarahm parabẖ sūkẖ niḏẖān.  Ŧaṯ gi▫ān har amriṯ nām.  Kar kirpā sanṯ tahlai lā▫e.  Nānak sāḏẖū sang samā▫e. ||4||23||36||

(Prabh) the Almighty, (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being, is (nidhaan = treasure) the source of (sookh) peace and comfort. Awareness of (amrit) the life-giving (naam) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty is (tat-u) the essence of (giaan-u) learning – to attain that peace.

The Almighty (kar-i kirpa) kindly (laaey) engages (ttahlai = in service) in serving, and following the example of, (sant) the seekers. One (samaaey) merges with/remains absorbed in, the Almighty (sang-i) in company of/with guidance of (saadhoo) the guru, says fifth Nanak. 4. 23. 36.

Bẖairo mėhlā 5.  Sanṯ mandal mėh har man vasai.  Sanṯ mandal mėh ḏuraṯ sabẖ nasai.  Sanṯ mandal mėh nirmal rīṯ.  Saṯsang ho▫e ek parīṯ. ||1||

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bhairau. (Har-i) the Almighty (vasai = abides) is remembered (man-i) in mind (mah-i) in (manddal = group, gathering) company of (sant = saints) the seekers. (Sabh-u) every (durat-u) wrongdoing leaves when in company of the saints.

One’s (reet-i = practice) conduct becomes (nirmal) clean. One (hoey) has (eyk) one (preet-i = affection) love, i.e. learns to invoke only the One Almighty, (santsang-i) in company of the saints. 1.

Sanṯ mandal ṯahā kā nā▫o.  Pārbarahm keval guṇ gā▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Sant manddal) holy congregation is (naau) the name (ka) of (tahaa) that gathering; where (keyval) only (gun) virtues of (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being are (gaau = sung) praised, and learnt to emulate. 1.

(Rhaaau) pause and reflect on this.

Sanṯ mandal mėh janam maraṇ rahai.  Sanṯ mandal mėh jam kicẖẖū na kahai.  Saṯsang ho▫e nirmal baṇī.  Sanṯ mandal mėh nām vakẖāṇī. ||2||

Being put in cycles of (janam) births and deaths (rahai) is obviated by being (mah-i) in (sant manaddal) holy congregation. (Jam-u) the agent of Divine justice (kahai) says (kichhoo na) nothing, i.e. has no jurisdiction on those who join holy congregation, because one shuns vices.

One’s (baani) words/speech – as also thoughts and deeds – (hoey) become (nirmal = clean) free of vices; Naam or Divine virtues and commands are (vakhaani = said) praised and learnt to obey in holy congregation. 2.

Sanṯ mandal kā nihcẖal āsan.  Sanṯ mandal mėh pāp bināsan.  Sanṯ mandal mėh nirmal kathā.  Saṯsang ha▫umai ḏukẖ nasā. ||3||

(Aasan-u) the seat (ka) of the holy congregation is (nihchal) unshakable, i.e. those who join holy congregation do not waver. (Paap) wrongdoings (binaasan-u = destroyed) are given up by being in holy congregation.

(Kathaa) discourse in holy congregation is (nirmal = clean) of the pristine virtues of the Almighty; (haumai) ego which causes (dukh) suffering (nasaa = runs) is dispelled (santsang-i) in company of the guru. 3.

Sanṯ mandal kā nahī binās.  Sanṯ mandal mėh har guṇṯās.  Sanṯ mandal ṯẖākur bisrām.  Nānak oṯ poṯ bẖagvān. ||4||24||37||

(Binaas-u) destruction (ka) of those who join holy congregation does (nahi) not happen, i.e. those who join holy congregation do not fall prey to vices. (Har-i) the Almighty (guntaas) treasure of virtues dwells in Holy congregation. (Bisraam-u = rest) dwelling of (tthaakur) the Master is in holy congregation; (bhagvaan-u) the Almighty is woven with the holy congregation like (ot-i = warp) in length-wise and (pot = woof) across yarn in a fabric, says fifth Nanak. 4. 24. 37.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bhairau. (Kavan-u) what can (rog-u = disease) vices do (jaa’n) when the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (raakhai) protects; (dookh santaap) suffering does not (hoey = happen) afflict (tis-u) that (jan) person – who has God’s grace.

One (oopar-i) on (jis-u) whom (prabh-u) the Almighty (karai) bestows (kirpa) mercy, (kaal-u = death) the agent of Divine justice (parharai) keeps away (tey) from (oopar-i = over the head) harming (tis-u) that person. 1.

Saḏā sakẖā▫ī har har nām.  Jis cẖīṯ āvai ṯis saḏā sukẖ hovai nikat na āvai ṯā kai jām. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Awareness of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty is (sadaa) ever (sakhaaee/sahaaee) helpful in keeping vices at bay.

(Sukh-u) peace/comfort is (sadaa) ever (hovai = happens) experienced by (tis-u) that person to (jis-u) whose (cheet-i) mind Naam (aavai) comes, i.e. one who is conscious of Naam; as (jaam-u/jam) the agent of Divine justice does not (aavai) come (kai nikatt-i) near (ta) that person. 1.

(Rhaaau) pause and reflect on this.

(Jab) when (ihu = this) the creature did (na) not exist (tab) then (kinah-i) who (upaaiaa) created it; and (tey) from (kavan) what (mool = root) beginning (kiaa) what (pragttaaiaa = made manifest) form it was given – see the way humans are formed from the semen of the father and egg of the mother.

The Creator (aapah-i) IT-self (maar-i) kills and (aap-i) IT-self (jeevaalai) revives, i.e. IT-self causes the creatures to fall prey to vices and (sadaa) ever (pratipaalai = nurtures) gives ability to (aapney  = own) IT’s (bhagat kau ) devotees to overcome vices. 2.

(Jaanhu = know) be aware that (sabh kichh-u) everything is in (tis kai = of that) IT’s (haath) hands; (prabh-u) the Master (meyro = my) of all is (naath) master (ko) of (anaath) master-less, i.e. helps those whom no one helps.

(Ta ka = of that) IT’s (naau = name) attribute is (bhanjan-u) to destroy (dukh) distress, one who (gaau = sings) praises and emulates (key = of, tis = that) God’s (gun) virtues (paavah-i) attains peace/comfort. 3.

O (suaami) Master, (sun-i = listen) this is (ardaas-i) the submission of (santan = saints) the seekers; our (jeeo) soul, (praan = breaths) life and (dhan-u) wealth are in (tumrai) Your (paas-i = with) hands.

(Ihu) this (jag-u) world is (teyra = your) created by You and (sabh) everyone (dhiaaey) invokes, i.e. looks to, (tujha-i) You; please (kar-i) bestow (kirpa) kindness for fifth Nanak, i.e. the creatures, to (paaey) experience (sukh-u) peace/comfort. 4. 25. 38.

Bẖairo mėhlā 5.  Ŧerī tek rahā kal māhi.  Ŧerī tek ṯere guṇ gāhi.  Ŧerī tek na pohai kāl.  Ŧerī tek binsai janjāl. ||1||

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bhairau. O Almighty, it is with (teyri) Your (tteyk) support, i.e. by Your grace, that I can (rahaa) remain stable (maah-i) in (kal-i) the age of conflicts – with so many temptations around; (teyri) Your (tteyk) support/grace comes to one who (gaah-i = sings) praises and emulates (teyrey) Your virtues.

With Your grace, (kaal-u = death) the agent to Divine justice does not (pohai = affect) take to task; (janjaal-u = entanglement) attachment to the world-play (binsai = destroyed) ends with Your grace. 1.

(Teyri) Your (tteyk) support is available here in (duneeaa) the world and (deen) the hereafter; You (eyk) the lone (sahib-u) Master (raviaa) are present (mah-i) in (sabh) all creatures and places. 1.

(Rhaaau) pause and reflect on this.

I (karau = do) enjoy (aanand) happiness with (teyri) Your (tteyk = support) grace; it is with Your grace that I (japau) remember and practice (mant = mantr) directions of (gur) the guru.

It is with your grace, that we the creatures can (tareeai = swim) get across (bhau/bhav) the world (saagar) ocean, i.e. overcome vices in the world-play. You are (poora = perfect) the Omnipotent (raakhaanhaar-u) protector from vices, o (saagar-u) ocean/source of (sukh) peace/comfort. 2.

One who has (teyri) Your (tteyk = support) grace/protection, (naahi – not, koey = any) has no (bhau) fear; You, (soey = that) the One (saachaa) Eternal Master (antarjaami) know the minds of all.

I have placed (tteyk) reliance (teyri = your) on You and have (taan-u) the power (teyri) Your Naam (man-i) in mind; (too) You are (deebaan-u = court) the authority (eehaa-n) here and (oohaa-n = there) in the hereafter. 3.

Placing (tteyk) reliance (teyri = your) on You and (bharvaasa) trust in You, (sagal) all creatures (dhiaavah-i) invoke You, (prabh) the Almighty (guntaasa) treasure of virtues.

(Teyrey) Your (daasaa = servants) seekers (jap-i jap-i) remember and practice Your commands and (karah-i = do) enjoy (anand-u/anand) happiness; you should (simar-i) keep in mind (saachey) the Eternal Almighty (guntaasa) treasure of virtues, o fifth Nanak, i.e. all creatures. 4. 26. 39.

Bẖairo mėhlā 5.  Parathme cẖẖodī parā▫ī ninḏā.  Uṯar ga▫ī sabẖ man kī cẖinḏā.  Lobẖ moh sabẖ kīno ḏūr.  Param baisno parabẖ pekẖ hajūr. ||1||

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bhairau. (Prathmey = firstly) first of all a devotee of God (chhoddi) gives up (praaee) others’ (ninda) slander, i.e. stops wishing ill for others; and with it (sabh) all (chinda) worry/restless-ness (ki) of (man) the mind (utar-i gaee) is removed.

S/he (keeno = makes, door-i = far) gives up (sabh-u) every vice like (lobh-u) greed, (moh-u) attachment to the world-play – as also Kaam = lust, Krodh = anger, Ahankaar = vanity – such a (param = supreme) true (baisno) devotee (peykh-i) sees (prabh) the Almighty (hajoor-i) present with him/her. 1.

Aiso ṯi▫āgī virlā ko▫e.  Har har nām japai jan so▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

There is (koey) some (virla) rare (aiso) such (tiaagi) a renunciate – who has given up vices; (soey) that (jan-u = servant) devotee (japai) remembers and practices (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands. 1.

(Rhaaau) pause and reflect on this.

Ahaʼn▫buḏẖ kā cẖẖodi▫ā sang.  Kām kroḏẖ kā uṯri▫ā rang.  Lobẖ moh sabẖ kīno ḏūr.  Param baisno parabẖ pekẖ hajūr. ||1||

S/he (chhoddiaa) leaves (sang-u) the company of, i.e. gives up (ahanbudh-i = sense of self-importance) ego – not paying attention to Hukam or Divine commands and the guru’s instructions. Then (rang-u = color) one’s nature of (kaam) lust, (krodh) anger – as also Lobh = greed, Moh = worldly attachment, Ahankaar = vanity – (utriaa) is removed.

Those who (dhiaaey) pay attention (har-i har-i harey – thrice) to God’s Naam in thought, word and deed, (sang-i) in company of (saadh = seeker, janaa = people) seekers, (nistarey) get across the world-ocean of vices to get to God. 2.

One who (laee) takes (mat-i) counsel (tey) from (gur) the guru, to obtain (pagaas-u) enlightenment (man-i) of the mind, i.e. awareness of Naam, wish (ki = of, ta = that) of that person to attain union with the Creator (paee) is (poori) fulfilled, says fifth Nanak. 4. 27. 40.

Attachment to (maat) the mother, (pitaa) father, (sut = sons) children and (banita = wife) spouse is (bandhan) bondage, as is to (dharam) the laid down (karam) rituals when one (karta) does in (hau) ego.

(Bhau) fear of having to face (sagal) all (bhaiaan) terrifying situations (nasai = runs) leaves as (har-i) the Almighty (basai = abides) is always remembered by (apnaey = own) IT’s (jan = servant) seeker. 3.

One’s (reet-i = practice) conduct becomes (nirmal) clean. One (hoey) has (eyk) one (preet-i = affection) love, i.e. learns to invoke only the One Almighty, (santsang-i) in company of the saints. 1.

One’s (baani) words/speech – as also thoughts and deeds – (hoey) become (nirmal = clean) free of vices; Naam or Divine virtues and commands are (vakhaani = said) praised and learnt to obey in holy congregation. 2.

Ḏīn ḏunī▫ā ṯerī tek.  Sabẖ mėh ravi▫ā sāhib ek. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Ŧerī tek kara▫o ānanḏ.  Ŧerī tek japa▫o gur manṯ. Ŧerī tek ṯarī▫ai bẖa▫o sāgar.  Rākẖaṇhār pūrā sukẖ sāgar. ||2||

Ŧerī tek nāhī bẖa▫o ko▫e.  Anṯarjāmī sācẖā so▫e.  Ŧerī tek ṯerā man ṯāṇ.  Īhāʼn ūhāʼn ṯū ḏībāṇ. ||3||

Ŧerī tek ṯerā bẖarvāsā.  Sagal ḏẖi▫āvahi parabẖ guṇṯāsā.  Jap jap anaḏ karahi ṯere ḏāsā.  Simar Nānak sācẖe guṇṯāsā. ||4||26||39||

Aiso ṯi▫āgī virlā ko▫e.  Har har nām japai jan so▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Bairī mīṯ ho▫e sammān.  Sarab mėh pūran bẖagvān.  Parabẖ kī āgi▫ā mān sukẖ pā▫i▫ā.  Gur pūrai har nām driṛ▫ā▫i▫ā. ||3||

For him/her (bairi = enemies) opponents and (meet) friends (hoey) are (sammaan) equal, because s/he believes (bhagvaan) the Almighty (pooran) pervades (mah-i) in (sarab) all.

S/he (maan-i) obeys (aagiaa) commands (ki) of (prabh) the Almighty and (paiaa) attains (sukh-u) peace. (Drirraaiaa) firm commitment for (naam-u) Naam has been created in him/her by (poorai) the perfect (gur-i = by the guru) the guru. 3.

Kar kirpā jis rākẖai āp.  So▫ī bẖagaṯ japai nām jāp.  Man pargās gur ṯe maṯ la▫ī.  Kaho Nānak ṯā kī pūrī pa▫ī. ||4||27||40||

One (jis-u) whom the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (kar-i kirpa) kindly (raakhai) protects from vices; (soi) that (bhagat-u) devotee (japai) practices (jaap) remembrance and obedience to Naam.

Bẖairo mėhlā 5.  Sukẖ nāhī bahuṯai ḏẖan kẖāte.  Sukẖ nāhī pekẖe niraṯ nāte.  Sukẖ nāhī baho ḏes kamā▫e.  Sarab sukẖā har har guṇ gā▫e. ||1||

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bhairau. (Sukh-u) peace is attained (naahi) neither by (khaattey) earning (bahutai) a lot (dhan-i) of money; nor is peace attained (pekhey) by watching (nirat-i) dance and (naattey) theatre.

Peace is not attained by (kamaaey = earning) conquering (bah-u) a lot of (deys = country) territory; (sarab) all (sukhaa) comforts and peace are attained (gaaey = singing) by praising and emulating (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (gun) virtues of the Almighty. 1.

Sūkẖ sahj ānanḏ lahhu.  Sāḏẖsangaṯ pā▫ī▫ai vadbẖāgī gurmukẖ har har nām kahhu. ||1|| rahā▫o.

If you wish to (lahahu) attain (sookh) peace/comfort, (sahaj) poise and (aanand) happiness. It is (paaeeai) attained those who (vaddbhaagi) are fortunate to join (saadhsangat-i) holy congregation, to learn (gurmukh-i) teachings of the guru to (kahau = utter) remember and practice (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating (naam-u) commands of the Creator. 1.

(Rhaaau) pause and reflect on this.

Banḏẖan māṯ piṯā suṯ baniṯā.  Banḏẖan karam ḏẖaram ha▫o karṯā.  Banḏẖan kātanhār man vasai.  Ŧa▫o sukẖ pāvai nij gẖar basai. ||2||

Attachment to (maat) the mother, (pitaa) father, (sut = sons) children and (banita = wife) spouse is (bandhan) bondage, as is to (dharam) the laid down (karam) rituals when one (karta) does in (hau) ego.

When the Almighty (kaattanhaar-u) who is capable of cutting (bandhan) bondages (vasai) abides/is remembered (man-i) in the mind; (tau) then one (basai) dwells in (nij) own (ghar-i) house, i.e. has a steadfast mind and (paavai) attains (sukh-u) peace. 2.

Sabẖ jācẖik parabẖ ḏevanhār.  Guṇ niḏẖān be▫anṯ apār.  Jis no karam kare parabẖ apnā.  Har har nām ṯinai jan japnā. ||3||

(Sabh-i) all are (jaachik) beggars and (prabh) the Almighty is (deyvanhaar) the giver, who is (nidhaan) the treasure of (gun) virtues and is (apaar) infinite, (beyant) without limits.

One (no) to (jis) whom (apna = own) our (prabh-u) Master (karey) bestows (karam) grace; (tinai) that (jan-i) person (japna) remembers and practices (har-i, har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating (naam-u) commands of the Almighty. 3.

Gur apne āgai arḏās.  Kar kirpā purakẖ guṇṯās.  Kaho Nānak ṯumrī sarṇā▫ī.  Ji▫o bẖāvai ṯi▫o rakẖahu gusā▫ī. ||4||28||41||

Let us make (ardaas-i) supplication (aagai) before the Almighty (gur) guru (apney = own) of all; o (purakh) all-pervasive Almighty (guntaas-i) treasure of virtues, please (kar-i kirpa) be kind.

Says fifth Nanak: I have placed myself in (tumri) Your (sarnaai = sanctuary) care and obedience, please (rakhahu) keep me (tio) that way (jio) as would (bhaavai) please You, o (gusaaee) Master of the world. 4. 28. 41.
