(Har-i) the Almighty (jagjeevan = life of the world) Creator is (hamrey) my very (praan) life – I cannot have peace without God in mind.

Since (gur-i) the guru (deeo) gave (mant-u = mantra) instructions into my (kaan) ears, i.e. made me aware of Naam/Divine virtues and commands, (ootam-u) the Supreme (har-i) Almighty Master (bhaio) has become lovable (antar-i) in (rid) the mind, i.e. I have been motivated to live by Naam. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Prabh-i) the Almighty Master (hamrai = my) of the world (lagaaee) created (loch) yearning in (ham) me; (ham) I (karah-i = do) am engaged in (bhaal) search of (prabhoo har-i) the Almighty Master. 1.

(Meyra) my (man-u) mind is (dhoor-i ravaal) dust of the feet, i.e. humbly follows teachings, of (saadhh) the guru.

(Gur-i) the guru (drirraaio) created firm commitment for (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands and I find it (meettha = sweet) agreeable; I (jhaarah) dust (pag) feet of (gur) the guru with my (baal) long hair, i.e. pay obeisance to, and submit to the directions of the guru. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Kau) for (Saakat = worshippers of Shakti) those who turn away from God (Din-u) day and (rain-i) night are (andhaari) dark, i.e. they are oblivious of Naam and get (phaathey) trapped in (jaal) the web of (moh-i) attachments to (maaiaa) the world-play.

(Har-i prabh-u) the Almighty Master does not (vasio = abide) come to their minds even for (khin-u pal-u) a moment; being (rin-i) in debt – not complying with Naam – they are caught by (baal) the hair and (baadhey) detained/punished by Divine justice in (bahu) many (bidh-i) ways. 2.

Composition of the fourth Guru in raga Prabhaati. One on whom (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-i) Master (dhaari) bestows (ik = one, kihin = bit) a little (kirpa) kindness, s/he (gaaey = sings) praises and emulates (gun) Divine virtues (rask raseek) with relish.

(Do-oo) both of those (gaavat = singing) praising the Almighty and (sunat) listening to it, (jinaa) who (peek) drink (har-i) the Divine elixir, i.e. emulate Divine virtues, for (khin) a moment (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru (bhaey) are (muktey) emancipated of vices in life and from rebirth after death. 1.

(Ras-u) the elixir of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty (tteek = settled) abide in (meyrai) my (man-i) mind.

(Gurmukh-i) the guru’s teachings (paaiaa = put) has given (seetal) the cool (jal-u) water of Naam/awareness of Divine virtues and commands; and I (peeaa) drink the Naam (ras-u) elixir (jheek) with one long draught, i.e. steadfastly lead life by, (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating Naam – keeping away from transgressions. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Those in (jin) who (lagaani) are imbued with (preet-i) love/yearning for (har-i) the Almighty (hirdai) in their minds – they overcome vices; they are marked on (tinaa) their (mask-i) foreheads with (tteek = frontal mark) a sign of (oojal = clean) being free of vices.

(Sobha) glory of (jan) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty is (oopar-i) over (sabh) the whole (jag) world, like God has (keek) made (sas-i) the moon amongst (uddva) the stars. 2.

Those in (jin) whose (hirdai) mind Naam is not (vasio = abide) remembered, (sabh-i) all (tin) their (kaaraj) actions are (pheek = insipid) fruitless.

(Jaisey) like one who with (nakttey) shorn nose on (tinaa) their (mask-i) foreheads (karai) does (seegaar-u) makeup, (deyh) body does not become attractive, similarly (maanukh) a person (binaa) without practice of Naam is (keek) made, i.e. (nakttey nak = of cut nose) ignominy in Divine court. 3.

(Har-i) the Almighty has (dhaari) bestowed (kirpa) kindness (kau) to (jan) humble fourth Nanak – the seeker and he (dhiaao) pays attention to comply with (bachan) words/instructions of (gur) the guru to live by commands of the Almighty (meek = one) every (ghari) moment. 4. 3.

Composition of the fourth Guru in raga Prabhaati. (Agam) the incomprehensible and (daiaal) compassionate (prabh-i) Almighty (dhaari) showed (kripa) kindness to motivate (ham) me (kahey = say) to remember (mukh-i) with the mouth and practice (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) Naam/Divine virtues and commands.

Naam of (har-i) the Almighty (paavan) purifies (patit) those fallen to vices; (sabh-i) all (kilbikh paap) transgressions (lahey) are removed/given up of those who (dhiaaio) pay attention/practice Naam. 1.

(Man = mind) o human being, (jap-i) keep in mind and obey Naam/commands/cosmic laws of (raam) the Almighty which (ravi rahey) are present/applicable everywhere.

One who (lahey) obtains (padarath-u = substance) awareness of Naam (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance, (gaaio = sings) invokes the Almighty, who is (daiaal-u) kind to (deen) the hapless and (bhanjan) destroys (dukh) pain/suffering. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Har-i) the Almighty (basio) dwells (Nagar-i nagar-i = in all towns) in all (kaaiaa) of bodies; one finds (har-i har-i) the Almighty (sahaey = king) Master within (mat-i) with understanding of (gurmat-i) the guru’s guidance.

When (sareer-i) the body/mind is cleansed by bathing (sarovar-i) in the pool of Naam, i.e. and drives out other ideas, then (har-i) the Almighty (pragattio = manifests) shows up and one (lahey) finds (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master (ghar-i mandar-i) in the house, i.e. within. 2.

Jo nar bẖaram bẖaram uḏi▫āne ṯe sākaṯ mūṛ muhe. Ji▫o marig nābẖ basai bās basnā bẖaram bẖarmi▫o jẖār gahe. ||3||

Those (nar) persons who (bharam-i) are deluded – ignore Naam –, they (bharam-i) wander directionless like one lost (uduaaney) in a jungle; (tey) those (saakat = worshippers of Shakti) seekers of material benefits are (moor) foolish; they are (muhey) are robbed of the opportunity provided by human birth to unite with the Almighty.

They are (jio) like (mrig) the deer who (bhram-i) in delusion (bhramio) is misled (gahey = holds) to put its head in (jhaar) bushes searching for (basna) the source of fragrance (baas-u = fragrance) Kastoori/musk (basai = abides) is located (naabh-i) in its navel. (The third Guru says elsewhere “ghar hi mah amrit bharpoor hai, manmukhaa saad na paaiaa; jio kastoori mirag na jaanai bhramda bharam-i bhulaaiaa. M: 3, p 644. Naam is present inhome/mind by self-willed persons do not gat the taste/awareness of it; like the deer does not know Musk being present on its body. Also, Vin-u kaaiaa j-i hor thai dhan khojdey sey moorr beytaaley; sey ujharr-i bharam-i bhavaaeeah-i jio jhaarr mirag-u bhaaley. 15. M: 4, p 309. Those who search the wealth of Naam of God elsewhere than the body, those foolish persons are out of step with the beat – directionless; they are lost and wander like the deer searches the bushed for musk which is on its body).

O Almighty (tum) You are (vadd) the highest, (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (bodh-i) knowledge about Your virtues and powers and (agaadh = bottomless) unfathomable; when You (prabh) the Almighty (deyvhu) impart (mat-i) understanding then one (lahey) finds You (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master.

(Gur-i) the guru (dhario) placed his (haath-u) hand (sir-i) on head (kau) of (jan) humble fourth Nanak – the seeker – , i.e. blessed with his guidance, I (rav-i rahey) remain absorbed in, i.e. live by, (naam-i) Naam of (raam) the all-pervasive (har-i) Almighty. 4. 4.

One whose (man-i) mind (laagi) develops (preet-i) love for (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty, s/he (japio) remembers/obeys (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master, (vaddfa) the highest authority.

This happens when (bachan = words) teachings of (satigur-u) the true guru to obey (har-i) the Almighty (sukhaaney) are comforting/agreeable to (heearai) the mind; the guru is found when (har-i prabh) the Almighty Master (dhaari) bestows kindness – to lead to the guru. 1,

(Poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru (deeo = gave, daan-u = alms) imparted awareness, (har-i) the purifying and (har-i) rejuvenating (naama) Naam of (har-i) the Almighty (basfa/basai) abides in my (man-i) mind and (tan-i) body, i.e. I remain conscious of Naam in every thought and deed. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

The Almighty (vasio) abides (ghar-i mandar-i) in house/mind (kaaiaa) in the body (nagar-i) town, i.e. Naam is present within, we should (jap-i) remember and (karpfa = do, sobha = praise) acknowledge and obey Naam (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru.

Those (jan = servants) seekers who live by Naam, are (suheley) comfortable/at peace (halat-i) here and (palat-i) in the hereafter; their (mukh) faces are (oojal) clean, i.e. they are freed of vices, (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance and (tarfa = swim) get across the world-ocean to unite with the Almighty. 2.

(Sabh) all (kott-i kott-i) crores (key) of (dokh) faults of (jan = servant) one who obeys the Almighty are (keeay = made, door-i = far) removed in (ik) one (palfa) moment, i.e. as soon as one starts living by Naam. 3.

(Bhagat Ravidas says: Prabh tey jan jaaneejai, jan tey suaami. P 93. The devotee is known from the Almighty, and the Almighty is known from the devotee).

(Har-i har-i) the Almighty has (dhario) enshrined (aap-u) the Self (mah-i) in (har-i jan) the devotee; (jan) the devotee and (har-i pabh-u) Almighty Master are (ikfa) one, says fourth Nanak. 4. 5.

(Gur) the great (satigur-i) true guru (drirraaio) created firm commitment to (har-i = takes away vices) the purifying (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands; I (jeevey) was revived from (muey) dead, i.e. had fallen to vices but have now been freed, (japibha) keeping in mind (har-i) the Almighty.

O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey Naam of (raam) the Almighty; it (ardhaambha) needs to be remembered. (Har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master is (laabha) found through obeying Naam as made aware by (poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru; God is not (paaeeai) found by (upjamp-i) by any other (upaaey) method. 1.

(Ras-u) the elixir of (raam) Divine (naam-u) Naam of (raam) the Almighty is (rasaain-u = home of elixir) most sublime (ras-u = elixir) prescription/medicine; this (ras-u) elixir is (rasbha) relished when (peeaa = drunk) taken/practiced (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance.

Like (manoor) waste (loh) iron becomes (kanchan-u) gold (mil-i = meeting) on touching Paaras, similarly one who joins (sangat-i = company) the holy congregation (dhaario) keeps Naam of (har-i) the Almighty in (ur) mind – and is purified of vices – s/he finds (haribha) the Almighty guided (gur-i) by the guru. 2.

The human beings are (nit) ever (lubhaaney = engrossed) caught in (bikhiaa) the vices of (haumai) ego (lobh-i) in greed and (lubhibha) engrossed with (put = sons) children and (kalat) spouse.

They never (seyvey = serve, pag = feet) obey instructions of (sant) the saint guru; (tey) such (manmukh) self-willed persons are (bharbha) smeared with (bhombhar) hot ash, i.e. remain restless. 3.

O (prab) Almighty, (tum hi) You alone (jaanhu) know the extent of (tumrey) Your (gun) virtues and powers; (ham) I (haar-i = defeated) have given up evaluating You and (parey) placed myself in (tum) your (saranbha/saran = sanctuary) care and obedience.

Please (raakhahu) keep us (tio) that way (jio) as You (jaanhu) consider fit, O (suaami) Master; (jan) humble fourth Nanak is (tumnabhaa) Your (daas-u) servant/devotee. 4. 6.

Those in Your sanctuary, o revered Almighty, i.e. those who lead life by Naam, (tinaa) they have (kichh-u naah-i = not any) no (dookh) faults or (bhookh = hunger) craving.

O human being, (too) you should (salaah-i = praise) acknowledge (naam-u) Naam/Divine virtues and commands and (samah-i) remain absorbed/lead life (sabad-i = with the word) commands (sachai) of the Eternal, says third Nanak. 4. 4.

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 3.   Gurmukẖ har jī▫o saḏā ḏẖi▫āvahu jab lag jī▫a parān. Gur sabḏī man nirmal ho▫ā cẖūkā man abẖimān.  Safal janam ṯis parānī kerā har kai nām samān. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Prabhaati.  O human being, (sadaa) ever (dhiaavhu) pay attention to/live in obedience to (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, (jab lag-u) as long as you have (jeea) soul and (praan) breaths/life in the body.

(Man-u) the mind (hoaa) is (nirmal-u = clean) freed of other ideas (sabdi = with the word) with guidance of the guru, and (abhimaan-u) vanity (man-i) of the mind – which is an impediment to finding God – (chooka) ends.

(Janam-u) human birth (keyra) of (tis-u) that (praani) person who (samaan) is absorbed/leads life (naam-i) by Naam/virtues and commands, is (saphal) fruitful, i.e. s/he makes use of the opportunity provided by human birth to unite with the Creator. 1.

Mere man gur kī sikẖ suṇījai.   Har kā nām saḏā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa sėhje har ras pījai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) mind/o human being, (suneejai) listen to (sikh) teachings (ki) of (gur) the guru to live by Naam. Practice of Naam of the Almighty (sadaa) ever (sukhdaata) gives comfort/solace; (peejai) drink (har-i) the Divine (ras-u) elixir (sahjey) steadfastly, i.e. make practice of Naam your way of life. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Those who (pachhaarran-i) recognize (mool-u = root) the Creator within, (tin-u) their (vaasaa) abode is in (nij) own (ghar-i) home, i.e. they remain steady with focus on the Almighty and do not look elsewhwre.

(Kamal-u = lotus flower) the mind (pargaasiaa = blossoms) is enlightened (sabad-i) with words/teachings (kai) of the guru to see the Creator within, and one (khoee = loses) gives up (durmat-i = evil counsel) the evil of (haumai) ego – forgetting God and acting by self-will.

(Eyko) the same One (sach-u) Eternal Master (vartai) is present (mah-i) in (sabhna) all, but (koee) some (virla) rare person – who follows the guru – (boojhai) recognizes God’s presence within and without. 2.

One whose (man-u) mind (hoaa) becomes (nirmal-u = clean) free of other ideas, s/he (vakhaanai = says) proclaims and lives by (amrit-u) the life-giving (tat-u) essence – Naam/Divine virtues and commands.

With Naam of (har-i) the Almighty (sadaa) ever (vasiaa) abiding (man-i) in mind; his/her (man-u) mind (maanai) is agreeable (vich-i) in (man) the mind (hi) itself, i.e. maintains focus on Naam and does not waver.

I (sad) ever (balihaari = am sacrifice, vittahu = to) adore (apuney = own) my (gur) guru, (jit-u) with whose guidance, the mind (pachaanai) recognizes presence of (aatam) the all-pervasive (raam-u) Almighty. 3.

One who does not (seyviaa = serve) obey (satiguru) the true guru in (maanas) human (janam-i) birth – to live by Naam -, s/he (gavaai = loses) wastes (janam-u) human birth (birtha) in vain.

When the Almighty (karey) bestows (nadar-i = sight of grace) grace, i.e. is kind, then IT (meyley = causes to meet) leads to (satigur-u) the true guru; (taa-n) then with his guidance, one remains (sahjey) naturally (samaaiaa) absorbed in/lives in obedience to Naam (sahj-i) steadfastly.

One with (poorai) good (bhaag-i) fortune (dhiaaiaa) pays attention to Naam, and (milai) receives (vaddiaaee) glory – of attaining union with the Creator, says third Nanak. 4. 5.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Prabhaati. (Aapey = self) the Creator (banaaey) created existence of (bahu) various (rangi) hues, and (uppaey) having created (sistt-i/sristt-i) the universe, (prabh-i) the Almighty (keeaa) created (kheyl-u = play) the various phenomena.

IT has (deeaa) given the sources of (rijak-u) wherewithal (no) for (sarab) all (jeeaa) creatures – to obtain which they need to work, and (veykhai) watches what (kar-i kar-i) has been created. 1.

Kalī kāl mėh ravi▫ā rām.   Gẖat gẖat pūr rahi▫ā parabẖ eko gurmukẖ pargat har har nām. ||1|| rahā▫o.

People followed different things and worshipped a deity each in other ages, but (mah-i) in (kaal) the age of (kali) conflicts – between different faiths, one needs to remember, and be in obedience, to Naam/commands of – (raam-u) the One all-pervasive Almighty.

(Eyko) the One (prabh-u) Almighty (poor-i rahiaa) is present (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every being; and (pargatt-u) manifests to one who (gurmukh-i) follows the guru to live by (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands. 1. ==

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Naam is (gupta) hidden but (vartai = acts) controls everything (vich-i) in (kaljug-i) the age of conflicts; (har-i) the Almighty is (bharpoor rahiaa) present (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every being.

The Naam (ratan-u) jewel (pragattiaa = manifests) shows up in (hirdai) minds of (tinaa) those who (bhaj-i = run, paiaa = place) place themselves in (sarnaaee = sanctuary) guidance of the guru. 2.

Inḏrī pancẖ pancẖe vas āṇai kẖimā sanṯokẖ gurmaṯ pāvai.  So ḏẖan ḏẖan har jan vad pūrā jo bẖai bairāg har guṇ gāvai. ||3||

One who (paavai) receives (gurmat-i) the guru’s counsel (vas-i = under control, aanai = brings) restrains (panch) the five (indri) sensory and (pach) five vices of lust etc. s/he acquires virtues of (khimaa) forgiveness/tolerance (santokh-u = contentment) being happy with Divine will.

(So) that (jan-u = servant) devotee of (har-i) the Almighty (dhan-u dhan-u) is highly blessed and (poora) accomplished who (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) Divine virtues (bhai = fear) with reverence and (bairaag-i) yearning for the Almighty. 3.

Gur ṯe muhu fere je ko▫ī gur kā kahi▫ā na cẖiṯ ḏẖarai. Kar ācẖār baho sampa▫o sancẖai jo kicẖẖ karai so narak parai. ||4||

(Jey) if (koee) someone (pheyrey) turns (muh-u) face away (tey) from (gur) the guru, and does not (dharai) keep (kahaiaa) bidding of the guru (chit-i) in mind.

And (kar-i) performs (aachaar) rituals for display of piety, but acts to (sanchai) gather (bahu) more and more of (sampau) wealth; (jo kichh-u) whatever rituals s/he (karai) does are of no use; s/he (parai) is put (narak-i) in hell, i.e. denied union with the Creator and sent for reincarnation. 4.

Ėko sabaḏ eko parabẖ varṯai sabẖ ekas ṯe uṯpaṯ cẖalai.  Nānak gurmukẖ mel milā▫e gurmukẖ har har jā▫e ralai. ||5||6||

There is (eyko) only One (prabh-u) Almighty Master and (eyko) one Divine (sabad-u = word) writ (vartai) applies (sabh) everywhere; (utpat-i) the creation (chalai = moves) functions (tey) with (eykas-u) the one writ – cosmic laws.

One whom the Almighty (meyl-i = causes to meet) leads to receive and live (gurmukh-i) by the guru’s guidance, that (gurmukh-i) follower of the guru (jaaey) goes and (ralai) merges in (har-i har-i) the Almighty, says third Nanak. 5. 6.

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 3.   Mere man gur apṇā sālāhi.   Pūrā bẖāg hovai mukẖ masṯak saḏā har ke guṇ gāhi. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Prabhaati. O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (saalaah-i = praise) acknowledge and obey (apna = own) Your guru. Remember, the guru is found by one who has (poora = perfect) good (bhaag-u) fortune written (mukh-i = on face, masatak-i = on forehead) in destiny, s/he (gaah-i) praises and emulates (gun) virtues (key) of (har-i) the Almighty with the guru’s guidance. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Amriṯ nām bẖojan har ḏe▫e.   Kot maḏẖe ko▫ī virlā le▫e.  Jis no apṇī naḏar kare▫i. ||1||

(Har-i) the Creator (dey-i) gives (amrit) the life-giving (bhojan-u) food of Naam/directions on the role in life and is present in the mind; but (koee) some (virla) rare person (madhey) in (kott-i) crores (ley-i) takes, i.e. gets awareness of Naam, (no) on (jis-u) whom, the Almighty (karey-i) bestows (nadar-i) grace – to lead to the guru. 1.

Gur ke cẖaraṇ man māhi vasā▫e.  Ḏukẖ anĥerā anḏrahu jā▫e.   Āpe sācẖā la▫e milā▫e. ||2||

When one (vasaaey = causes to abide) keeps (charan = feet) instructions of the guru (maah-i) in (man) mind; (dukh-u) pain caused by committing transgression (aneyhra = darkness/ignorance) due to being oblivious of Naam, (jaaey) leaves (andrahu) from within and one lives by Naam. Then (saachaa) the Eternal Master (laey milaaey) unites (aapey) with IT-self. 2.

Gur kī baṇī si▫o lā▫e pi▫ār.   Aithai othai ehu aḏẖār.  Āpe ḏevai sirjanhār. ||3||

One should (laaey) bear (piaar-u) love (sio) for (baani = words) guidance of the guru – to live by Naam. (Eyhu) this is (adhaar-u) the mainstay for being at peace (aithai) here and (othai = there) in the hereafter. (Sirjanhaar-u) the Creator (deyvai) grants peace/union (aapey) on IT’s own – no efforts/rituals are needed. 3.

Sacẖā manā▫e apṇā bẖāṇā.  So▫ī bẖagaṯ sugẖaṛ sojāṇā.   Nānak ṯis kai saḏ kurbāṇā. ||4||7||17||7||24||

One whom (sachaa) the Eternal (manaaey) causes to happily accept (apna = own) IT’s (bhaana) will; (soee) that person is (sugharr-u) an accomplished and (sojaana = well-informed) wise (bhagat-u) devotee – s/he is accepted for union by the Creator. Third Nanak (sad) ever (kurbaana = is sacrifice, kai = to) adores – and follows – (tis) that person. 4. 7. 17. 7. 24.
