(Har-i) the Almighty (jagjeevan = life of the world) Creator is (hamrey) my very (praan) life – I cannot have peace without God in mind.

Since (gur-i) the guru (deeo) gave (mant-u = mantra) instructions into my (kaan) ears, i.e. made me aware of Naam/Divine virtues and commands, (ootam-u) the Supreme (har-i) Almighty Master (bhaio) has become lovable (antar-i) in (rid) the mind, i.e. I have been motivated to live by Naam. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Meyra) my (man-u) mind is (dhoor-i ravaal) dust of the feet, i.e. humbly follows teachings, of (saadhh) the guru.

(Gur-i) the guru (drirraaio) created firm commitment for (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands and I find it (meettha = sweet) agreeable; I (jhaarah) dust (pag) feet of (gur) the guru with my (baal) long hair, i.e. pay obeisance to, and submit to the directions of the guru. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Kau) for (Saakat = worshippers of Shakti) those who turn away from God (Din-u) day and (rain-i) night are (andhaari) dark, i.e. they are oblivious of Naam and get (phaathey) trapped in (jaal) the web of (moh-i) attachments to (maaiaa) the world-play.

(Har-i prabh-u) the Almighty Master does not (vasio = abide) come to their minds even for (khin-u pal-u) a moment; being (rin-i) in debt – not complying with Naam – they are caught by (baal) the hair and (baadhey) detained/punished by Divine justice in (bahu) many (bidh-i) ways. 2.

Composition of the fourth Guru in raga Prabhaati. One on whom (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-i) Master (dhaari) bestows (ik = one, kihin = bit) a little (kirpa) kindness, s/he (gaaey = sings) praises and emulates (gun) Divine virtues (rask raseek) with relish.

(Do-oo) both of those (gaavat = singing) praising the Almighty and (sunat) listening to it, (jinaa) who (peek) drink (har-i) the Divine elixir, i.e. emulate Divine virtues, for (khin) a moment (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru (bhaey) are (muktey) emancipated of vices in life and from rebirth after death. 1.

(Ras-u) the elixir of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty (tteek = settled) abide in (meyrai) my (man-i) mind.

(Gurmukh-i) the guru’s teachings (paaiaa = put) has given (seetal) the cool (jal-u) water of Naam/awareness of Divine virtues and commands; and I (peeaa) drink the Naam (ras-u) elixir (jheek) with one long draught, i.e. steadfastly lead life by, (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating Naam – keeping away from transgressions. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Those in (jin) who (lagaani) are imbued with (preet-i) love/yearning for (har-i) the Almighty (hirdai) in their minds – they overcome vices; they are marked on (tinaa) their (mask-i) foreheads with (tteek = frontal mark) a sign of (oojal = clean) being free of vices.

(Sobha) glory of (jan) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty is (oopar-i) over (sabh) the whole (jag) world, like God has (keek) made (sas-i) the moon amongst (uddva) the stars. 2.

Those in (jin) whose (hirdai) mind Naam is not (vasio = abide) remembered, (sabh-i) all (tin) their (kaaraj) actions are (pheek = insipid) fruitless.

(Jaisey) like one who with (nakttey) shorn nose on (tinaa) their (mask-i) foreheads (karai) does (seegaar-u) makeup, (deyh) body does not become attractive, similarly (maanukh) a person (binaa) without practice of Naam is (keek) made, i.e. (nakttey nak = of cut nose) ignominy in Divine court. 3.

(Har-i) the Almighty has (dhaari) bestowed (kirpa) kindness (kau) to (jan) humble fourth Nanak – the seeker and he (dhiaao) pays attention to comply with (bachan) words/instructions of (gur) the guru to live by commands of the Almighty (meek = one) every (ghari) moment. 4. 3.

Composition of the fourth Guru in raga Prabhaati. (Agam) the incomprehensible and (daiaal) compassionate (prabh-i) Almighty (dhaari) showed (kripa) kindness to motivate (ham) me (kahey = say) to remember (mukh-i) with the mouth and practice (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) Naam/Divine virtues and commands.

Naam of (har-i) the Almighty (paavan) purifies (patit) those fallen to vices; (sabh-i) all (kilbikh paap) transgressions (lahey) are removed/given up of those who (dhiaaio) pay attention/practice Naam. 1.

(Man = mind) o human being, (jap-i) keep in mind and obey Naam/commands/cosmic laws of (raam) the Almighty which (ravi rahey) are present/applicable everywhere.

One who (lahey) obtains (padarath-u = substance) awareness of Naam (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance, (gaaio = sings) invokes the Almighty, who is (daiaal-u) kind to (deen) the hapless and (bhanjan) destroys (dukh) pain/suffering. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Har-i) the Almighty (basio) dwells (Nagar-i nagar-i = in all towns) in all (kaaiaa) of bodies; one finds (har-i har-i) the Almighty (sahaey = king) Master within (mat-i) with understanding of (gurmat-i) the guru’s guidance.

When (sareer-i) the body/mind is cleansed by bathing (sarovar-i) in the pool of Naam, i.e. and drives out other ideas, then (har-i) the Almighty (pragattio = manifests) shows up and one (lahey) finds (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master (ghar-i mandar-i) in the house, i.e. within. 2.

Jo nar bẖaram bẖaram uḏi▫āne ṯe sākaṯ mūṛ muhe. Ji▫o marig nābẖ basai bās basnā bẖaram bẖarmi▫o jẖār gahe. ||3||

Those (nar) persons who (bharam-i) are deluded – ignore Naam –, they (bharam-i) wander directionless like one lost (uduaaney) in a jungle; (tey) those (saakat = worshippers of Shakti) seekers of material benefits are (moor) foolish; they are (muhey) are robbed of the opportunity provided by human birth to unite with the Almighty.

They are (jio) like (mrig) the deer who (bhram-i) in delusion (bhramio) is misled (gahey = holds) to put its head in (jhaar) bushes searching for (basna) the source of fragrance (baas-u = fragrance) Kastoori/musk (basai = abides) is located (naabh-i) in its navel. (The third Guru says elsewhere “ghar hi mah amrit bharpoor hai, manmukhaa saad na paaiaa; jio kastoori mirag na jaanai bhramda bharam-i bhulaaiaa. M: 3, p 644. Naam is present inhome/mind by self-willed persons do not gat the taste/awareness of it; like the deer does not know Musk being present on its body. Also, Vin-u kaaiaa j-i hor thai dhan khojdey sey moorr beytaaley; sey ujharr-i bharam-i bhavaaeeah-i jio jhaarr mirag-u bhaaley. 15. M: 4, p 309. Those who search the wealth of Naam of God elsewhere than the body, those foolish persons are out of step with the beat – directionless; they are lost and wander like the deer searches the bushed for musk which is on its body).

O Almighty (tum) You are (vadd) the highest, (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (bodh-i) knowledge about Your virtues and powers and (agaadh = bottomless) unfathomable; when You (prabh) the Almighty (deyvhu) impart (mat-i) understanding then one (lahey) finds You (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master.

(Gur-i) the guru (dhario) placed his (haath-u) hand (sir-i) on head (kau) of (jan) humble fourth Nanak – the seeker – , i.e. blessed with his guidance, I (rav-i rahey) remain absorbed in, i.e. live by, (naam-i) Naam of (raam) the all-pervasive (har-i) Almighty. 4. 4.

One whose (man-i) mind (laagi) develops (preet-i) love for (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty, s/he (japio) remembers/obeys (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master, (vaddfa) the highest authority.

This happens when (bachan = words) teachings of (satigur-u) the true guru to obey (har-i) the Almighty (sukhaaney) are comforting/agreeable to (heearai) the mind; the guru is found when (har-i prabh) the Almighty Master (dhaari) bestows kindness – to lead to the guru. 1,

(Poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru (deeo = gave, daan-u = alms) imparted awareness, (har-i) the purifying and (har-i) rejuvenating (naama) Naam of (har-i) the Almighty (basfa/basai) abides in my (man-i) mind and (tan-i) body, i.e. I remain conscious of Naam in every thought and deed. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

The Almighty (vasio) abides (ghar-i mandar-i) in house/mind (kaaiaa) in the body (nagar-i) town, i.e. Naam is present within, we should (jap-i) remember and (karpfa = do, sobha = praise) acknowledge and obey Naam (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru.

Those (jan = servants) seekers who live by Naam, are (suheley) comfortable/at peace (halat-i) here and (palat-i) in the hereafter; their (mukh) faces are (oojal) clean, i.e. they are freed of vices, (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance and (tarfa = swim) get across the world-ocean to unite with the Almighty. 2.

(Bhagat Ravidas says: Prabh tey jan jaaneejai, jan tey suaami. P 93. The devotee is known from the Almighty, and the Almighty is known from the devotee).

(Har-i har-i) the Almighty has (dhario) enshrined (aap-u) the Self (mah-i) in (har-i jan) the devotee; (jan) the devotee and (har-i pabh-u) Almighty Master are (ikfa) one, says fourth Nanak. 4. 5.

Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 4.   Gur saṯgur nām ḏariṛ▫ā▫i▫o har har ham mu▫e jīve har japibẖā. Ḏẖan ḏẖan gurū gur saṯgur pūrā bikẖ dubḏe bāh ḏe▫e kadẖibẖā. ||1||

Composition of the fourth Guru in raga Prabhaati. (Gur) the great (satigur-i) true guru (drirraaio) created firm commitment to (har-i = takes away vices) the purifying (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands; I (jeevey) was revived from (muey) dead, i.e. had fallen to vices but have now been freed, (japibha) keeping in mind (har-i) the Almighty.

(Dhan-u dhan-u) glory to (gur) the great (pooraa = perfect, satigur-u = true guru) the Almighty guru, who (dey-i) gave (baan) the arm and (kaddhibha) took out me (ddubdey) drowning/fallen to (bikh-u = poison) vices, i.e. the Almighty motivated me from within to overcome vices. 1.

Jap man rām nām arḏẖāʼnbẖā.   Upjamp upā▫e na pā▫ī▫ai kaṯhū gur pūrai har parabẖ lābẖā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (man = mind) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey Naam of (raam) the Almighty; it (ardhaambha) needs to be remembered. (Har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master is (laabha) found through obeying Naam as made aware by (poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru; God is not (paaeeai) found by (upjamp-i) by any other (upaaey) method. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Rām nām ras rām rasā▫iṇ ras pī▫ā gurmaṯ rasbẖā.  Loh manūr kancẖan mil sangaṯ har ur ḏẖāri▫o gur haribẖā. ||2||

(Ras-u) the elixir of (raam) Divine (naam-u) Naam of (raam) the Almighty is (rasaain-u = home of elixir) most sublime (ras-u = elixir) prescription/medicine; this (ras-u) elixir is (rasbha) relished when (peeaa = drunk) taken/practiced (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance.

Like (manoor) waste (loh) iron becomes (kanchan-u) gold (mil-i = meeting) on touching Paaras, similarly one who joins (sangat-i = company) the holy congregation (dhaario) keeps Naam of (har-i) the Almighty in (ur) mind – and is purified of vices – s/he finds (haribha) the Almighty guided (gur-i) by the guru. 2.

Ha▫umai bikẖi▫ā niṯ lobẖ lubẖāne puṯ kalaṯ mohi lubẖibẖā. Ŧin pag sanṯ na seve kabhū ṯe manmukẖ bẖūmbẖar bẖarbẖā. ||3||

The human beings are (nit) ever (lubhaaney = engrossed) caught in (bikhiaa) the vices of (haumai) ego (lobh-i) in greed and (lubhibha) engrossed with (put = sons) children and (kalat) spouse.

They never (seyvey = serve, pag = feet) obey instructions of (sant) the saint guru; (tey) such (manmukh) self-willed persons are (bharbha) smeared with (bhombhar) hot ash, i.e. remain restless. 3.

Ŧumre gun ṯum hī parabẖ jānhu ham pare hār ṯum sarnabẖā.  Ji▫o jānhu ṯi▫o rākẖo su▫āmī jan Nānak ḏās ṯumnabẖā. ||4||6|| Cẖẖakā 1.

O (prab) Almighty, (tum hi) You alone (jaanhu) know the extent of (tumrey) Your (gun) virtues and powers; (ham) I (haar-i = defeated) have given up evaluating You and (parey) placed myself in (tum) your (saranbha/saran = sanctuary) care and obedience.

Please (raakhahu) keep us (tio) that way (jio) as You (jaanhu) consider fit, O (suaami) Master; (jan) humble fourth Nanak is (tumnabhaa) Your (daas-u) servant/devotee. 4. 6.

(Chhakaa 1) this completes one set of six Shabads.

Jap man har har nām niḏẖān.   Har ḏargėh pāvahi mān.  Jin japi▫ā ṯe pār parān. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (man = mind) human being, awareness of Naam is (nidhaan) a treasure; (jap-i) remember and live by (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands. And you will (paavah-i) receive (maan) respect (dargah) in Divine court. (Jin-i) those who (japiaa) remember and obey Naam (paraan = are put) land (paar-i) on the far shore of the world-ocean, i.e. they overcome vices and unite with God. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Sun man har har nām kar ḏẖi▫ān. Sun man har kīraṯ aṯẖsaṯẖ majān.   Sun man gurmukẖ pāvahi mān. ||1||

O (man = mind) human being, (sun-i) listen to (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands (kar-i) with (dhiaan-u) attention – and practice them.

(Sun-i) listening to and emulating (keerat-i = praise) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty purifies the mind, and obviates the need to take (majaan-u = dip) baths at (attsatth-i) sixty-eight places of pilgrimage, o (man) human being.

One who listens and practices Naam (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru (paavah-i) receives (maan-u) respect here and in the hereafter. 1.

Jap man parmesur parḏẖān.   Kẖin kẖovai pāp kotān.  Mil Nānak har bẖagvān. ||2||1||7||

O (man) human being, (jap-i) remember and obey Naam of (parmeysur-u) the Supreme Master, (pardhaan-u = head) the highest authority. This (khovai = loses) destroys one’s (kottaan = crores) countless (paap) transgressions/faults and one (mil-u) meets/finds (har-i) the Almighty, says fourth Nanak. 2. 1. 7.
