ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਚਉਥਾ ਚਉਪਦੇ

Ga▫oṛī gu▫ārerī mėhlā 4 cẖa▫uthā cẖa▫upḏe

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri Raagini Guaryeri, (chaupdey) of four stanzas each.

 

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

One all-pervasive Creator who may be known by the grace of the true guru

 

ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪੜਿਆ ॥ ਜੋਗੀ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਕਰਿਆ ॥ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਪੜਿਆ ॥੧॥

Pandiṯ sāsaṯ simriṯ paṛi▫ā.   Jogī gorakẖ gorakẖ kari▫ā.   Mai mūrakẖ har har jap paṛi▫ā. ||1||

 

A (pandit) scholar (parriaa) reads scriptures like Smritis and Shastras; (jogi) the Yogi (karia) chants (Gorakh Gorakh) the name of his guru Gorakh. (Mai) I (moorakh = fool) was ignorant but (parria) have learnt (jap-u) to remember and practice commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਨਾ ਜਾਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਗਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤਰੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Nā jānā ki▫ā gaṯ rām hamārī.   Har bẖaj man mere ṯar bẖa▫ojal ṯū ṯārī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Others perform rituals which I do not; so (kia = what?) I do not (jaana) know (kiaa) what will be my (gat-i) state. O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (too) you should (bhaj-u) remember and obey (har-i) the Almighty; IT is (tar-u) the ship that (taari) ferries across (bhaujal-u) the world-ocean of temptations to the Almighty. 1.

ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਲਾਇ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥ ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਕਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

Sani▫āsī bibẖūṯ lā▫e ḏeh savārī.   Par ṯari▫a ṯi▫āg karī barahamcẖārī.   Mai mūrakẖ har ās ṯumārī. ||2||

 

(Sanyasi) a renunciate (laaey) applies (bibhoot) ash on (deyh) the body (savaari = decorate) for display.

(Brahmchaari) a celibate (par-u = surely) totally (kar-i = does, tiaag-u = forsaking) gives up lust, in hope of finding God.

I (moorakh) am ignorant and live by Naam in (tumaari) Your (aas-u) hope, i.e. yearning for You. 2.

 

 

ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਤਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਸੂਦੁ ਵੈਸੁ ਪਰ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

Kẖaṯrī karam kare sūrṯaṇ pāvai.   Sūḏ vais par kiraṯ kamāvai.   Mai mūrakẖ har nām cẖẖadāvai. ||3||

 

The Hindus believe in the caste system in which (khatri) Kshatriya (paavai = obtains) learns acts of (soortan-u) valour. Sood/ Shudra and Vais-u/Vaishya (kamaavai) does (kirt) work of (par) others. I am (moorakh) ignorant and obey (har-i) Divine (naam-u) commands by which can (chhaddaavai) deliver me from all problems. 3.

 

ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੯॥

Sabẖ ṯerī sarisat ṯūʼn āp rahi▫ā samā▫ī.   Gurmukẖ Nānak ḏe vadi▫ā▫ī.   Mai anḏẖule har tek tikā▫ī. ||4||1||39||

 

O God, (sabh) the whole (sristt-i) universe is (teyri = your) created by You and You (rahiaa smaaee) pervade in it. Says fourth Nanak: Please (dey) give me awareness of Your (vaddiaaee = greatness) virtues and commands. (Mai) I (andhuley = blind) am ignorant and have (ttikaaee) placed myself in (har-i) Divine (tteyk) support. 4. 1. 39.

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਥਾ ਕਥਾ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ॥ ਭਜੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ॥ ਤਰੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī gu▫ārerī mėhlā 4. Nirguṇ kathā kathā hai har kī.   Bẖaj mil sāḏẖū sangaṯ jan kī.   Ŧar bẖa▫ojal akath kathā sun har kī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri, Raagini Guaryeri. (Kathaa) discourse on (har-i) Divine experience is (kathaa) description (nirgun) without attributes, i.e. is hard to explain.

One can (bhaj-u) praise the Almighty (mil-i = meeting) with i.e. guided by, (saadhoo) the guru in (sangat-i) congregation (ki) of (jan = servants) seekers.

(Tar-u = swim) get across (bhaujal-u) the world-ocean of temptations to (sun-i) listen to (akath) the indescribable (kathaa) discourse, i.e. the Divine experience within. 1.

 

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gobinḏ saṯsangaṯ melā▫e.   Har ras rasnā rām gun gā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (gobind = master of the world) Almighty, please (meylaaey) lead me to holy congregation. So that my (rasna) tongue (gaaey = sings) praises, and I emulate, (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty, and have (har-i) Divine (ras-u = relish) experience. 1.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

 

ਜੋ ਜਨ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥ ਤਿਨ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਮ ਰਾਮਾ ॥ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਊਤਮ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੨॥

Jo jan ḏẖi▫āvahi har har nāmā.   Ŧin ḏāsan ḏās karahu ham rāmā.   Jan kī sevā ūṯam kāmā. ||   m2||

 

(Jo) those (jan) persons who (dhiaavah-i) pay attention to/obey (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naamaa) commands of the Almighty. O (raama) all-pervasive Almighty, please (karah-u) make me (daas) servant of (tin) those (daasan-i) of servants/devotees of Yours, i.e. enable me to follow their example.

(Seyva = service) following (jan = servants) Your devotees is (ootam) sublime (kaamaa) deeds/practice. 2.

 

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ ਜਨ ਪਗ ਰੇਣੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

Jo har kī har kathā suṇāvai.   So jan hamrai man cẖiṯ bẖāvai.   Jan pag reṇ vadbẖāgī pāvai. ||3||

 

One who (sunaavai) relates (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying (kathaa = description) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty. (So) that (jan) devotee (bhaavai) is dear to (hamrai) my (man-i) mind and (chit-i) consciousness.

One who (paavai) receives (reyn-u) dust of (pag) the feet of, i.e. humbly follows, (jan) God’s devotees is (vaddbhaagi) is fortunate. 3.

 

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੦॥

Sanṯ janā si▫o parīṯ ban ā▫ī.   Jin ka▫o likẖaṯ likẖi▫ā ḏẖur pā▫ī.   Ŧe jan Nānak nām samā▫ī. ||4||2||40||

 

(Preet-i) affection (siau) with (san janaa = saints) the devotees (ban-i aaee) develops of those (jink au = for whom) in whose destiny it (likh-i paaee) written (dhur-i) at the source/by the Creator.

(Tey) those (jan) devotees (samaaey = absorbed) conform (naam-i) to Naam/Divine virtues and commands, says fourth Nanak. 4. 2. 40.

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਮਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਤੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਮੀਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭਈ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī gu▫ārerī mėhlā 4.  Māṯā parīṯ kare puṯ kẖā▫e.   Mīne parīṯ bẖa▫ī jal nā▫e.   Saṯgur parīṯ gursikẖ mukẖ pā▫e. ||1||

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri Raagini Guaryeri. (Mata) the mother (preet-i karey) loves when (put-u = son) the child (khaaey) eats.

(Meeney) the fish (preet-i bhaee) loves (naaey = bathing) being (jal-i) in water.

Similarly (satigur) the true guru (preet-i) loves (paaey) putting (mukh-i) in mouth of, i.e. to teach, (gursikh) the guru’s disciple to remember and obey Naam/Divine virtues and commands. 1.

 

ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਹਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ ਜਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ŧe har jan har melhu ham pi▫āre.   Jin mili▫ā ḏukẖ jāhi hamāre. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (piaarey) Beloved Almighty, please (meylah-u) lead me (tey) those (jan = servants) seekers of (har-i) the Almighty. (Miliaa) by meeting (jan) whom – I do not commit vices and – (hamaarey) my (dukh) grief (jaah-i = goes) is obviated. 1.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

 

ਜਿਉ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਛਰੇ ਗਊ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਾਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

Ji▫o mil bacẖẖre ga▫ū parīṯ lagāvai.   Kāman parīṯ jā pir gẖar āvai.   Har jan parīṯ jā har jas gāvai. ||2||

 

(Jiau) like (gaoo) the cow (lagaavai) shows (preet-i) affection/is happy (mil-i) on meeting (bachhrey) the calf. (Kaaman-i) the wife (preet-i) loves (jaa) when (pir-u) the husband (aavai) comes (ghar-i) home.

(Jan = servant) a seeker of (har-i) the Almighty (preet-i) loves (ja) when s/he (gaavai) praises (jas-u) glory of (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

 

ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਸੈ ਜਲ ਧਾਰਾ ॥ ਨਰਪਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਪੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

Sāring parīṯ basai jal ḏẖārā.   Narpaṯ parīṯ mā▫i▫ā ḏekẖ pasārā.   Har jan parīṯ japai nirankārā. ||3||

 

(Saarang) the rain bird (preet-i) loves when it (jal dhaara) rain (vasai) drops. (Narpat-i = the master of men) the king (preet-i) loves (deykh-i) seeing (pasaara) expansion of his (maaiaa) domain. (Jan) devotee of (har-i) God loves when s/she (japai) remembers and praises virtues of (nirankara) the formless Creator. 3.

 

ਨਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟੇ ॥ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਾਟੇ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਪਗ ਚਾਟੇ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੧॥

Nar parāṇī parīṯ mā▫i▫ā ḏẖan kẖāte.   Gursikẖ parīṯ gur milai galāte.   Jan Nānak parīṯ sāḏẖ pag cẖāte. ||4||3||41||

 

Like (nar praani) the mortal (preet-i = affection) loves (khaattey) earning (maaia dhan) money and gathering wealth. The Gursikh (preet-i) loves (milai galaatai = embraces) is being with the guru. (Jan) the devotee loves (Sadh chaatai = licks, pag = feet) serving and following teachings, of (saadh) the guru. 4. 3. 41.

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਭੀਖਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭੀਖ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਭੂਖੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਘਾਇ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī gu▫ārerī mėhlā 4.   Bẖīkẖak parīṯ bẖīkẖ parabẖ pā▫e.   Bẖūkẖe parīṯ hovai ann kẖā▫e.   Gursikẖparīṯ gur mil āgẖā▫e. ||1||

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri Raagini Guaryeri. (Bheekhak) beggar (preet-i) loves when (prabh) master of the house (paaey) puts (bheekh) alms in his/her begging bowl. (Bhookhey) a hungry person (preet-i hovai) loves when s/he (khaaey) eats (ann-u = grain) a meal.

The Gursikh loves (mil-i) meeting (gur) the guru and (aaghaaey = satiated) feels happy. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੋਚ ਪੂਰਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har ḏarsan ḏeh har ās ṯumārī.   Kar kirpā locẖ pūr hamārī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (har-i) Almighty, please (deyh-u = give, darsan-u = sight) grant me vision (tumaari) of You, this is my (aas) wish. Please (kar-i kirpa) bestow grace (poor-i) fulfil (hamaari) my (loch) yearning.

ਚਕਵੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤਿਆਗੈ ॥ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੨॥

Cẖakvī parīṯ sūraj mukẖ lāgai.   Milai pi▫āre sabẖ ḏukẖ ṯi▫āgai.   Gursikẖ parīṯ gurū mukẖ lāgai. ||2||

 

 (Chakvi) the female bird Chakvi (preet-i) longs (mukh-i laagai = facing) to see rise of the sun – so as to see the male. It (tiaagai = gives-up) is freed of (sabh) all (dukh) pain when it (milai) meets (piaarey) the beloved male countrpart. Similarly, the Gursikh longs (mukh-i laagai = faces) to see the guru. 2.

 

ਬਛਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਖੀਰੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਮਾਇ ॥ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥

Bacẖẖre parīṯ kẖīr mukẖ kẖā▫e.   Hirḏai bigsai ḏekẖai mā▫e.   Gursikẖ parīṯ gurū mukẖ lā▫e. ||3||

 

(Bachhrey) a calf (preet-i) yearns to (khaaey = eat) drink (kheer-u) milk of the cow. It (bigsai) is happy (hirdai) in mind (deykhai) to see (maaey) the mother cow. Similarly, the Gursikh longs (mukh-i laaey) to see the guru

 

ਹੋਰੁ ਸਭ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੂਰਾ ਕਚੁ ਪਾਚਾ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥੪॥੪॥੪੨॥

Hor sabẖ parīṯ mā▫i▫ā moh kācẖā.   Binas jā▫e kūrā kacẖ pācẖā.   Jan Nānak parīṯ ṯaripaṯ gur sācẖā. ||4||4||42||

 

(Sabh) all (hor-u) other (preet-i) love – except for obeying God, caused by (moh-u) enticement by (maaiaa) temptations and is (kaachaa) impermanent/short-lived, i.e. for transitory satisfaction. Being (koorra = false) for short term pleasure and (binas-i jaaey) does not last being (kach-u paachaa) transitory. Says (jan) humble fourth Nanak: I (preet-i) look forward to meet, and am (tript-i) happy to meet (saacha) the true (gur) guru h. 4. 4. 42.

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਹੈ ਬਣੀ ॥ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਧਣੀ ॥ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੀਛੈ ਛੂਟੀ ਘਣੀ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī gu▫ārerī mėhlā 4. Saṯgur sevā safal hai baṇī.   Jiṯ mil har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā har ḏẖaṇī.   Jin har japi▫ā ṯin pīcẖẖai cẖẖūtī gẖaṇī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri Raagini Guaryeri. (Seyva = service) following (satigur) the true guru’s teachings (hai banee) is (saphal) fruitful. (Mil-i) on meeting (jit-u) whom, one gets awareness of (naam-u) Naam/Divine commands and one (dhiaaiaa = pay attention to) one (har-i) the Almighty (dhanee) Master.

(Ghanee) numerous/everyone can (chhuttee) be freed from temptations by (peechhai = behind) following the example of those (jin) who (japia) remember/obey (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਤ ਸਭ ਪਾਪ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gursikẖ har bolhu mere bẖā▫ī.   Har bolaṯ sabẖ pāp lėh jā▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (meyrey) my (bhaaee = brethren) dear (gursikh) guru’s disciples (bolh-u = utter) praise (har-i) the Almighty. (Paap) transgressions (lah-I jaaee) are removed/given up (bolat = uttering) praising and emulating virtues of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

This is how it happens.

 

ਜਬ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਬ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਧਾਵਤ ਪੰਚ ਰਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਗਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

Jab gur mili▫ā ṯab man vas ā▫i▫ā.   Ḏẖāvaṯ pancẖ rahe har ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.   An▫ḏin nagrī har guṇ gā▫i▫ā. ||2||

 

(Jab) when (gur) the guru (milia) is found and his teachings followed, (man) the mind (vas-i aaiaa) comes under control. When (har-i) the Almighty (dhiaaiaa = paid attention) is obeyed then (dhaavat) wandering of (panch) the five action organs – hands, feet, tongue/speech, anus and genital (rahey) are restrained from committing vices. Such a (nagri = town/body) person (gaaiaa = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (andin-u = everyday) all the time. 2.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਗ ਧੂਰਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਈ ॥ ਤਿਨ ਕੂੜ ਤਿਆਗੇ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ ਤੇ  ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਭਾਈ ॥੩॥

Saṯgur pag ḏẖūr jinā mukẖ lā▫ī.   Ŧin kūṛ ṯi▫āge har liv lā▫ī.   Ŧe har ḏargėh mukẖ ūjal bẖā▫ī. ||3||

 

Those (jinaa) who (laaee) apply (dhoor-i) dust of (pag) feet of (satigur) the true guru (mukh-i) on the face, i.e. who respectfully obey the true guru. (Tin) they (tiaagey) give up (koorr = false things) pretentions and (laaee) fix (liv) attention on obeying (har-i) the Almighty.

Such (bhaaee) brethren have (oojal) clean faces, i.e. are found with no vices, (dargah) in court of (har-i) the Divine. 3.

 

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨੁ ਬਲਭਦ੍ਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਗ ਲਗਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਤਰਾਵੈ ॥ ੪॥੫॥੪੩॥

Gur sevā āp har bẖāvai.   Krisan balbẖaḏaro gur pag lag ḏẖi▫āvai.   Nānak gurmukẖ har āp ṯarāvai. ||4||5||43||

 

(Har-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (bhaavai) likes (seyva) obedience of (gur) the guru. Even the god Krishna, and Balbhadra (dhiaavai) obey the Almighty (lag-i = attaching to, pag = feet) with guidance of (gur) the guru.

The Almighty (traavai) ferries across the world-ocean of vices, (gurmukh-i) those who follow the guru, says fourth Nanak. 4. 5. 43.

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਡੰਡਾਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪੈ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

Ga▫oṛī gu▫ārerī mėhlā 4. Har āpe jogī dandāḏẖārī.   Har āpe rav rahi▫ā banvārī.   Har āpe ṯap ṯāpai lā▫e ṯārī. ||1||

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri Raagini Guaryeri(Har-i) the Almighty is (aapey) IT-self is (jogi) the yogi (ddanddaadhaari) with staff in hand. The Almighty is IT-self (banvaari = gardener of the vegetation) the Sustainor (rav-i rahia) pervading everywhere. When people practice (tap-u taapai) austerities, or sit (laaey taari) in deep meditation, it is the Creator within who does that. 1.

 

ਐਸਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Aisā merā rām rahi▫ā bẖarpūr.   Nikat vasai nāhī har ḏūr. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Aisa) such is (raam-u) the Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all who (rahiaa bhrpoor-i) pervades everywhere. IT (vasai = abides) is present (nikatt-i = near) within, (naahi) not (door-i) far somewhere.

(Rahaau) pause here and reflect.

 

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਆਪੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਆਪੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਜਪਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੇ ॥੨॥

Har āpe sabaḏ suraṯ ḏẖun āpe.   Har āpe vekẖai vigsai āpe.   Har āp japā▫e āpe har jāpe. ||2||

 

(Har-i) God is (aapey) IT-self the (sabad-u = Divine word) Divine commands and (aapey) IT-self (dhun-i = in tune) attentive (surat-i) consciousness as receiver. IT-self (veykhai = sees) watches and (vigsai) feels happy. The Almighty IT-self (japaaey) motivates the creatures obey Naam and being present in them, IT-self (jaapey) remembers and obeys (har-i) Divine commands. 2.

 

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਧਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਆਪਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

Har āpe sāring amriṯ▫ḏẖāra.   Har amriṯ āp pī▫āvaṇhārā.   Har āp kare āpe nisṯārā. ||3||

 

The Creator is IT-self (sarang) the rain bird asking for rain and itself the (amritdhaara) continuous rain; IT-self (peeaavanhaara) causes to drink (amrit = life-giving elixir) the water, i.e. the Almighty imparts awareness of and motivates to obey Divine commands. (Har-i) the Almighty IT-self creates the creatures and (karey = does, nistaaraa = ferry across word ocean) enables them to overcome vices, and unites with IT-self. 3.

 

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਬੇੜੀ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਤਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੬॥੪੪॥

Har āpe beṛī ṯulhā ṯārā.   Har āpe gurmaṯī nisṯārā.   Har āpe Nānak pāvai pārā. ||4||6||44||

 

God is (aapey) IT-self the (beyrri) boat and (tulha) the raft that (taara) ferries across the world ocean; IT-self (nistaara) ferries/saves those who follow (gurmati) the guru’s counsel. (Har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (paavai = receives, paara = at far shore) ferries across the world-ocean and unites them with IT-self, says fourth Nanak. 4. 5. 44.
