ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Ga▫oṛī bairāgaṇ mėhlā 4.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri Raagini Bairagan.

Note: This Shabad uses the terms ਸਾਹੁ (Saah-u) meaning a financier or business owner man, and ਵਣਜਾਰੇ (Vanjaarey) meaning traders. The Saahu provides good/merchandise to the traders who buy and sell goods, come back and deposit the sale receipts. Saahu is their master. This has been used in Gurbani as metaphor for God as the financier/ source who gives the capital of virtues to the living beings with which to conduct themselves the souls are evaluated on return to God.

Sāhu hamārā ṯūʼn ḏẖaṇī jaisī ṯūʼn rās ḏėh ṯaisī ham lehi.   Har nām vaṇnjah rang si▫o je āp ḏa▫i▫āl ho▫eḏėh. ||1||

O Almighty, you are (hamaara) our (saah-u) financier and (dhanee) Master (ham) we (leyh-i) receive (taisee) those (raas = capital) resources (jaisee) as (too) You give, i.e. the creatures conduct themselves according to awareness given by the Creator.

We (siau = with, rang = love) lovingly (vanjnah) deal in, i.e. conduct ourselves, according to (naam-u) Divine commands (jey) if You (hoey) are (daiaal-u) kind to (deyh-i) give – the awareness. 1.

Ham vaṇjāre rām ke.   Har vaṇaj karāvai ḏe rās re. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Ham) we are the (vanjaarey) traders (key) of (raam) the Almighty. (Har-i) the Almighty (dey) gives (raas-i = money) resources/awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands (karaavai = causes to do, vanaj = trade) causes us to conduct ourselves with that. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

(Bhagat-i) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty (khattiaa) earn the profit of imbibing virtues of (har-i) the Almighty and (sachey) the Eternal (sah) Master (Man-i = to the mind, bhaaiaa = liked) is pleased.

They (jap-i) remember/obey (har-i) Divine commands and (ladiaa = load) take with them (har-i) the Divine (vakhar-u) merchandise/virtues; (jaagaati = tax collector) the agent of (jam-u) Divine justice – who prevents the erring souls from union with God, does not (aaiaa) come (neyrr-i) near them. 2.

(Hor) other (vaapaareeay = dealers) human beings who do not obey the Almighty (vanaj-u = dealskarah-i = do) conduct themselves enticed by (anant tarangi = of numerous waves) multifaceted temptations of (maaia) the world-play resulting in (dukh) suffering. But this is not in their hands (jeyhai) whatever (vanaj-i = dealings) conduct (oey) they are engaged by (har-i) the Almighty, they (paaiaa) receive (phal-u) fruit/consequence (teyhha) accordingly. 3.

(So) that (jan-u) person (karey = does, vanaj = deals) conducts him/her-self by (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating commands of the Almighty to (jis-u) whom (prabh-u) the Almighty (hoey) is (kripaal-u) kind to (deyee) give.

(jan) humble fourth Nanak (seyviaa = serves) obeys (har-i) the Almighty (saah-u) Master, then God (mool-i na) never (leyee = takes) ask to account for deeds, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1. 7. 45.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gaurri Raagini Bairagan. The way (kirsaan-u a farmer (karey) does (kirsaani) farming farm (lochia) fondly and (jeeo laaey) devotedly. He (hal jotai) ploughs the land and (udam = effort, karey = makes) works hard (hal jotai) tills the land and works hard so that (meyra = my) his (put) sons and (dhee) daughters, i.e. the family, (khaaey = eat) is fed.

(Tiau) similarly (har-i) the Almighty (laey chhaddaaey) delivers from rebirth (ant-i) at the end of life, (jan = servant) the devotee who (jap-u karey) remembers and obeys (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating commands of the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

(Tiau) similarly (har-i jan) God’s devotee (bolta = speaks) praises (har-i har-i) the Almighty, and paavai) experiences (sukh-u) peace (bol-i = speaking) by praising and emulating (har-i) Divine virtues. 2.

(Moh) love for (jhootth-u = false) impermanent wealth is (pasaaraa = expanse) caused by (jhootth-u = falsehood) pretentious living, and people (lapttaaey) cling to (jhootthey) pretentious people (lapttaey) cling to it.

(Tiau) similarly (har-i jan-i) God’s devotee (sanchiaa = gathers) earns/imbibes (har-i dhan-i) Divine wealth/Naam and (lai jaaey) takes it as (kharach-u = expense) as the wherewithal/guide to get to (har-i) the Almighty. 3.

(Ih-u) this (moh) love for (maaiaa) money for (kuttamb-u) the family causes to act by (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas, i.e. causes to transgress, and leads to (phaas) noose of Divine justice. (So) that (jan-u) person (tarai = swims) escapes Divine justice (jo) who becomes (daas) servant of (daasan-i) of servants, i.e. humbly obeys Divine commands (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance.
