Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Gauri, Raagini Maajh

Note: The first verse of this Shabad uses two expressions usually found together in Gurbani. They are ਮਤਿ ਮਾਤਾ (Mati maata) meaning the mother gives wisdom i.e. teaches and ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਪਿਤਾ (santokh pita) meaning the father gives contentment or reassurance. These are the roles of the parents.

Rāg ga▫oṛī mājẖ mėhlā 4.   Gurmukẖ jinḏū jap nām karammā.   Maṯ māṯā maṯ jī▫o nām mukẖ rāmā.

Sanṯokẖ piṯā kar gur purakẖ ajnamā.   vadbẖāgī mil rāmā. ||1||

(Karamma = task) purpose of (jindoo = life) human birth is (jap-i) to remember and conform to (naam-u) Divine commands (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance.

Follow (mat-i) counsel of (maata) the mother; and that (mat-i) counsel is to utter/praise (naam-u) virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty (mukh-i) with the mouth.

(Kar-i) make (santokh-u = contentment) willing obedience to (ajanma = unborn) the Formless (purakh-u) all-pervasive Almighty, (gur-u) the guru – guide for life.

Thus, be a (baddbhaagi) fortunate person to (mil-u) find the Almighty. 1.

Gur jogī purakẖ mili▫ā rang māṇī jī▫o.   Gur har rang raṯ▫ṛā saḏā nirbāṇī jī▫o.   vadbẖāgī mil sugẖaṛ sujāṇī jī▫o.  Merā man ṯan har rang bẖinnā. ||2||

The guru is (jogi) the seeker who has (miliaa) found (purakh-u) the all-pervasive Almighty – risen above temptations and (maani) enjoys (rang-u) love of the Almighty. (Gur-u) the guru is (ratrra) imbued (rang-i) with love of (har-i) the Almighty, and (sadaa) ever (nirbaani = detached) above temptations.

(Vaddbhaagi) a fortunate person (mil-u) finds (sugharr sujaani) the wise guru. I found one and (meyra) my (man) mind and (tan-u) body are (bhinna) is imbued (rang-i) with love of (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

O (Santah-u) seekers, (aavh-u) come let us (mil-i) together (naam japaaha) recount and learn to conform to emulate Divine virtues and commands. Do that (vich-i) in (sangat-i) holy congregation and (lai laaha) derive the benefit of awareness of (naam-u) Divine commands.

(Kar-i seyva = serving, santa = the saints) by following the guru’s teachings and (mukh-i) in mouth, i.e. acknowledge and obey, the life-giving (ammrit-u) elixir, i.e. Naam/virtues and commands.

One (mil-u) finds holy congregation if so (likhiarrey) written (dhur-i) at the source based on (poorab-i) past (karma) deeds, i.e. if one has the aptitude. 3.

Sāvaṇ varas amriṯ jag cẖẖā▫i▫ā jī▫o.   Man mor kuhuki▫aṛā sabaḏ mukẖ pā▫i▫ā.   Har amriṯ vuṯẖ▫ṛā mili▫ā har rā▫i▫ā jī▫o.   Jan Nānak parem raṯannā. ||4||1||27||65||

Like when (saavan-i) rain (varas-u) falls in the rainy season, (ammrit-i) the life-giving water (chhaaiaa) covers (jag-u) the world, i.e. everyone is happy.

(Man-u) the mind (mor) peacock (kuhukrriaa) screams, i.e. when (sabad-u = Divine word) awareness of Naam (paaiaa) put in the mind, it yearns to find the Almighty.

When (ammrit-u) Naam (vutthrra) abides in mind, (raaiaa) the Sovereign (har-i) Almighty (miliaa) is found.

One is (ratannaa) imbued (preym-i) with love, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1. 27. 65.

The guru (paaiaa) is found based on (poorab-i) past (likhat-i) writing, i.e. past good deeds; – with his guidance the vices are dispelled and – (man-i) the mind (manddal mandda = stuffed with) fully filled and (live) attention/focus on (har-i) God. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Note: The next verse describes the state of one who turns away from God in search of material gains. Such a person worships Shakti or the goddess and is called a Saakat or Sakta.

On the other hand, (har-= God, Jan = servants) those who obey the Almighty (samaaney) remain absorbed in obedience (naam-i) of Naam/Divine commands; they (khandda = break) end (dukh-u) the pain of being in the cycles of (janam) births and (maran) deaths in (bhav) the world.

(Paaia) they find (abinaasi) the eternal (purakh-u) all-pervasive Master within and (sobh) earn praise (khandd brahmandda = the whole universe) of all. 3.
