Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Pārbarahm pūran parmesur man ṯā kī ot gahījai re Jin ḏẖāre barahmand kẖand har ṯā ko nām japījai re ||1|| rahā▫o
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. O my (man = mind) human being, (gaheejai = catch) place yourself in (ott) protection of (paarbrahm) the Supreme Spirit who is (pooran = complete) all-pervasive (parameysur) Supreme Master of the universe.
(Japeejai) remember and obey (naam-u) commands of (ta) that (har-i) Creator (jin) who has created and (dhaarey) provides support for (khandd) the planets and (brahmandd) the universes. 1.

ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਰੇ ॥ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਭਲ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸੁਖਿ ਦੁਖਿ ਓਹੀ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
Man kī maṯ ṯi▫āgahu har jan hukam būjẖ sukẖ pā▫ī▫ai re Jo parabẖ karai so▫ī bẖal mānhu sukẖ ḏukẖohī ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai re ||1||
(Rey) o (jan) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty (taagah-u) give up (mat-i) views (ki) of (man) the mind; (sukh-u) peace (paaeeai) is attained (boojh-i) by understanding/obeying (hukam-u) Divine commands.
(Jo) whatever (prabh-u) God (karai) does, i.e. whatever happens naturally, (maanh-u) accept (soee) that (bhal) right; we should (dhiaaeeai) pay attention to/obey (ohi = that) the Almighty. 1.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਰੇ ॥ ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੈ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
Kot paṯiṯ uḏẖāre kẖin mėh karṯe bār na lāgai re Ḏīn ḏaraḏ ḏukẖ bẖanjan su▫āmī jis bẖāvai ṯisėh nivājai re ||2||
(Kott-i = crores) multitudes of (patit) those fallen to vices (udhaarey) are lifted (khin mah-i) instantly; it (laagai) takes no (baar) delay/time (kartey) for the Creator, i.e. one only has to start obeying laws of nature made by the Almighty.
(Suaami) the Master (bhanjan) destroys/ends (darad) pain and (dukh) grief of (deen) the hapless; IT (nivaajai) gives honor to (tisah-i) those IT (bhaavai) approves. 2.
ਸਭ ਕੋ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਰੇ ॥ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਰਤਨਾਗਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
Sabẖ ko māṯ piṯā parṯipālak jī▫a parān sukẖ sāgar re Ḏeʼnḏe ṯot nāhī ṯis karṯe pūr rahi▫o raṯnāgar re ||3||
The Creator is (pratipaalak) Sustainer/provider like (maat) mother and (pita) father; is the creatures (saagar-u = sea) the source of (sukh) comforts/peace (praan) life and (jeea) soul of the creatures.
There is never (tott-i) shortfall in (deydey) giving by (tis-u = that) the (kartey) Creator; IT is (poor-i rahio) is an overflowing (ratnaagar-u) a mine of jewels/virtues and benedictions. 3.
ਜਾਚਿਕੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋਈ ਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੧੬॥੧੩੭॥
Jācẖik jācẖai nām ṯerā su▫āmī gẖat gẖat anṯar so▫ī re Nānak ḏās ṯā kī sarṇā▫ī jā ṯe baritha na ko▫ī re ||4||16||137||
My (suaami) Master, this (jaachik-u) beggar/seeker (jachai) seeks awareness of (teyra) your (naam-u) commands (soee) that is present (antar-i) in (ghat ghat) everybody/mind – please enable me to discover them within my mind.
Your (daas-u = servant) devotee fifth Nanak has placed himself in (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience (ta ki) that Almighty (ja tey) from whom (koee na) no one goes (britha) disappointed. 4. 16. 137.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ
One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥ ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Har har kabhū na manhu bisāre Īhā ūhā sarab sukẖ▫ḏāṯa sagal gẖatā parṯipāre ||1|| rahā▫o
(Har-i har-i) the Creator (kabah-oo na) never (bisaarey) forgets any one (manah-u) from the mind – ever watches every one. It (pratipaarey = nourishes) takes care (sarab) all (ghataa) bodies/minds. IT is (sukhdaata) gives comfort/solace (eeha) here and (ooha) in the hereafter. 1.
Message: Naam/Divine virtues and commands are present in everyone’s conscience; those who conform remain at peace.

ਮਹਾ ਕਸਟ ਕਾਟੈ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ॥ ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੂਖ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣੀ ਜਲਤੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Mahā kasat kātai kẖin bẖīṯar rasnā nām cẖiṯāre Sīṯal sāʼnṯ sūkẖ har sarṇī jalṯī agan nivāre ||1||
IT (khin bheetar-i) instantly (kaattey = cuts) removes (maha = great) serious (kastt) afflictions of those who (rasna= tongue) utter with the tongue and (chitaarey) keep in mind – obey the Creator in thought, word and deed.
One places the self (sarni = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (har-i) the Almighty (nivaarey)
Being in (har-i sarani) Divine sanctuary (nivaarey) banishes/quenches (jalti) burning (agni) fire – of craving and jealousy -, and keeps one (seetal = cool) calm, (saa’nt-i) in peace and (sookh). 1.
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਡ ਨਰਕ ਤੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਆਰਾਧਤ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
Garabẖ kund narak ṯe rākẖai bẖavjal pār uṯāre Cẖaran kamal ārāḏẖaṯ man mėh jam kī ṯarās biḏāre ||2||
Obedience to Naam (utaarey) lands (paar-i) on far shore of (bhavjal-u) the world-ocean of vices, and (raakhai = saves) obviates (narak = hell) heat of (garabh kund) the mother’s womb, i.e. rebirth. One who (araadhat) invokes (charan kamal = lotus feet) the Almighty (mah-i) in (man) mind, – keeps vices at bay and – (bidaarey) removes (traas) fear of (jam = Divine justice) consequences. 2.
ਪੂਰਨ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਊਚਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਧਿਆਵਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਜੂਏ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
Pūran pārbarahm parmesur ūcẖā agam apāre Guṇ gāvaṯ ḏẖi▫āvaṯ sukẖ sāgar jū▫e janam na hāre ||3||
(Paarbrahm) the Supreme Spirit, the (parmesur) Supreme Master of all is (pooran) all pervasive, (oocha) high, (agam) beyond reach and (apaarey) infinite.
One who (gaavat = sings) praises/emulates (gun) Divine virtues and (dhiaavat = pay attention) obeys the Almighty, (saagar = ocean) the treasure of (sukh) comfort, does not (haarey) lose (janam-u) human birth (jooey = in gambling) in fruitless pursuits. 3.
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਲੀਨੋ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੇ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩੮॥
Kām kroḏẖ lobẖ mohi man līno nirguṇ ke ḏāṯāre Kar kirpā apuno nām ḏījai Nānak saḏ balihāre ||4||1||138||
(Kaam-i) lust/desires, (krodh-i) wrath/intolerance and (lobh-i) greed (moh-i leenay) enticed my (man-u) mind; you are (daataarey = giver) kind to (nirgun) the meritless. (Kar-i kirpa) kindly (deejay = give) impart awareness of (apnuno = own) your (naam-u) Divine commands; may I (sad) ever (balihaarai) sacrifice my ego and obey you, submits fifth Nanak. 4. 1. 138.

Sukẖ nāhī re har bẖagaṯ binā Jīṯ janam ih raṯan amolak sāḏẖsangaṯ jap ik kẖinā ||1|| rahā▫o
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri There is (naahi) no (sukh-u) peace (naahi) is not possible (bina) without (bhagat-i) devotion/obedience to (har-i) the Almighty – as one then commits vices and comes to grief.
(Jeet-i = win) make success of (eih-u) this (amolak-u) priceless (ratan-u) jewel of (janam-u) human birth by obeying Naam, (k = one) every (khinaa) moment (sadhsangat-i) in company/with guidance of the guru. 1.

ਸੁਤ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ॥ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਏ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਗ ਭੋਗ ॥੧॥
Suṯ sampaṯ baniṯā binoḏ Cẖẖod ga▫e baho log bẖog ||1||
There is (binod) joy of having (sut = sons) children, (sampat-i) wealth and (banita) spouse. (Log) people (chhod-i gaey) die leaving behind (bah-u) plenty of objects of (bhog) pleasure. 1.
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਾਜ ਰੰਗ ॥ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਹੈ ਮੂੜ ਨੰਗ ॥੨॥
Haivar gaivar rāj rang Ŧi▫āg cẖali▫o hai mūṛ nang ||2||
People show off status symbols like (haivar) horses, (gaivar) elephants, (raaj – rule) authority and (rang) objects of pleasure.
(Moorr) the foolish persons do not realize that everyone (chalio) departs (tiaag-i) leaving them behind on death, (chalio) = goes (nang) naked – empty handed. 2.
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੇਹ ਫੂਲਿਆ ॥ ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਧਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੂਲਿਆ ॥੩॥
Cẖo▫ā cẖanḏan ḏeh fūli▫ā So ṯan ḏẖar sang rūli▫ā ||3||
One (phoolia = inflated) feels proud when applying (choaa = distillates) scents and (chandan) fragrant sandalwood paste on (deyh) on the body.
But on death (so) that (tan-u) body (roolia) rolls (sang-i) with (dhar) soil/dust – burnt to ash or buried. 3.
ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜਾਨੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩੯॥
Mohi mohi▫ā jānai ḏūr hai Kaho Nānak saḏā haḏūr hai ||4||1||139||
(Mohia) possessed (moh-i) by attachments to objects of world-play, one (jaanai) thinks the Creator is (door-i) far i.e. not watching – and ignores to live by Divine commands.
But the Creator is (sadaa) ever (hadoor-i/hazoor) is present – and watches – wherever we are, says Nanak. 4. 1. 139.

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Man ḏẖar ṯarbe har nām no Sāgar lahar sansā sansār gur bohith pār garāmano ||1|| rahā▫o
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. O (Man = mind) human being, make conformance (naam no) to Divine virtues and commands (dhar = support) the mainstay/method (tarbey = swim) to get across the world ocean of vices – this is the only way.
(Sansaar-u) the world is (saagar) an ocean with plenty of (lahar-i) waves/ideas causing of (sansa = doubts) delusions – due to which one loses self-control. (Guru) the guru’s teachings act as the (bohith-u) ship to take the soul (paar) across – overcome distractions of the world-play – and (paargraamno = be resident of the far side) be admitted to the abode of the Creator. 1.

ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲਖ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੀਆ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਪਕ ਉਜਿਆਰੀਆ ॥੧॥
Kal kālakẖ anḏẖi▫ārī▫ā Gur gi▫ān ḏīpak uji▫ārī▫ā ||1||
(Kal-i) Kalijun, the age of conflicts is (kaalakh) the soot that causes (andhiaareea = darkness) full of ignorance of Naam/Divine virtues and commands.
(Giaan) awareness of Naam, imparted by (guru) the guru acts as (deepak) the lamp (ujiaareea = light) to remove the ignorance of the mind. 1.
ਬਿਖੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਪਸਰੀ ਅਤਿ ਘਨੀ ॥ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨੀ ॥੨॥
Bikẖ bikẖi▫ā pasrī aṯ gẖanī Ubre jap jap har gunī ||2||
(Bikhiaa) the poison of (bikh-u) vices (pasree) is spread (at-i = very, ghani = plenty) widely. Those who (jap-i jap-i) ever remember/emulate (har-i) Divine (gunee) virtues (ubrey) are saved. 2.
ਮਤਵਾਰੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੋਇਆ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟਤ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਖੋਇਆ ॥੩॥
Maṯvāro mā▫i▫ā so▫i▫ā Gur bẖetaṯ bẖaram bẖa▫o kẖo▫i▫ā ||3||
One (matvaaro) inebriated by the temptations of (maaia) the world-play (soia = asleep) loses consciousness of Naam.
(Bharam-u) doubts/delusions, and (bhau) fear/apprehensions of retribution due to wrong-doings (khoiaa = lost) are overcome (bheyttat) by finding/following the guru’s guidance. 3.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪੦॥
Kaho Nānak ek ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā Gẖat gẖat naḏrī ā▫i▫ā ||4||2||140||
Says fifth Nanak: When one (dhiaaia) pays attention/obeys (eyk-u) the One Creator, the latter is seen (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in everybody/mind – and all doubts/delusions disappear, and one remains at peace. 4. 2. 140.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਦੀਬਾਨੁ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਤੁਹੀ ਏਕ ॥ ਸੇਵਾ ਥਾਰੀ ਗੁਰਹਿ ਟੇਕ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 5 Ḏībān hamāro ṯuhī ek Sevā thārī gurėh tek ||1|| rahā▫o
Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Gaurri. O Creator, (hamaarai) for me (tuhi) you are the (eyk) lone (deebaan-u = court) authority.
I engage in (thaari) your (seyva = service) service/obedience with (tteyk) support/guidance (gurah-i) of the guru. 1.
(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਚਾਕਰ ਲੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
Anik jugaṯ nahī pā▫i▫ā Gur cẖākar lai lā▫i▫ā ||1||
I tied (anik) numerous (jugat-i) methods, but could (naahi) not (paaiaa) fid you, until
(gur-i) the guru (lai laaiai) put me as your (chaakar) servant/devotee, i.e. guided live in obedience to Divine commands. 1.
ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਬਿਖਾਦੀਆ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਦਲੁ ਸਾਧਿਆ ॥੨॥
Māre pancẖ bikẖāḏī▫ā Gur kirpā ṯe ḏal sāḏẖi▫ā ||2||
This is how I (maarey) killed/overcame (panch) the five (bikhaadeeaa) vices – of lust, anger, greed, worldly attachments and vanity.
I (saadhiaa) controlled/overcame (dal-u = army) the forces of evil (tey) with (kirpa) kindness/guidance of the guru. 2.
ਬਖਸੀਸ ਵਜਹੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮ ॥ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥
Bakẖsīs vajahu mil ek nām Sūkẖ sahj ānanḏ bisrām ||3||
The servant, i.e. one who is dedicated (mil-i) receives awareness of Naam of (eyk-u) One Almighty (vahah-u) as (bakhsees) bounty. S/he attains (sook) comfort, (sahj) poise (aanand) bliss and (bisraam = rest) peace. 3.

Parabẖ ke cẖākar se bẖale Nānak ṯin mukẖ ūjle ||4||3||141||
(Sey) those who (chaakar = servants) obey (prabh) the Almighty, are (bhaley = good) approved. (Tin) their (mukh) faces are (oojley) clean, i.e. no faults are found with them, and are united with the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 4. 3. 141.
