NOTE: This Shabad has the setting of a wife wanting to act as she likes and still hope to win the love of her spouse. She is advised on what she needs to do. This is a metaphor for how the soul-wife can unite with the God-husband. The Shabad is addressed to one’s own soul.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Siriraag (Sun-i sun-i) listen o soul-woman (gaheyleeay) in grip of (kaam) desires, (kiaa) why do you (chalah-i) go about (luddaaey) waving your (baah) arms, i.e. the careless human being only wants to enjoy the objects of pleasures provided by the Almighty, but does not obey the Master.
You do not (pachhaanhi) understand liking of (aapna = own) your (pir-u) Almighty-husband, (kiaa) what (muh-u) face will you (deysah-i = give) show (jaaey) on getting to Divine court, i.e. you do not acknowledge and obey the Almighty and will cut a sorry figure when evaluated in Divine court.

(Sakhee’n = girlfriends) the soul-women (jini) who (pachhaaniaa) understand and obey (kant-u) the Almighty Master, I wish to (laagau) touch (tin kai) their (paaey) the feet, i.e. respect them and follow their example.

O Almighty, please (meyl-i) lead me to (milaaey) find their (satsangat-i) holy company so that I (thee raha) become (jaisi) like (tin hi) them. 1.

O (mundhey) soul-woman, you (mutthee = cheated) are enticed (koorr-i = false/impermanent) by transitory relations and pleasures and become (koorriar-i = false) unfathful, i.e. do not obey the Creator.

Remember, (prabh-u) the Almighty (pir-u) husband is (saacha) Eternal and (sohna = handsome) treasure of virtues; IT (paaeeai) is found within (beechaar-i) by reflecting on (gur) the guru’s teachings. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

(Manmukh-i) self-willed/egoistic soul-women do not (pachhaanaee) understand (kant-u) the Almighty-husband, one wonders (kiau) how do (tin) they (vihaaey) pass (rain-i = night) life.

They are (atteeaa) full (garab-i) of ego, (jalah-i) burn in the fire of (trisna) craving/desires and (paavah-i) experience (dukh-u) grief pursuing (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas, than obeying the Almighty.

The soul-women (rateeaa) imbued (sabad-i = with the word) with Naam/Divine commands are (sohaagni) fortunate, (haumai) ego (jaaey) leaves (vichahu) from within them.

They (raavah-i) enjoy company of (aapna = own) their (pir-u) Almighty-husband and their life (vihaaey) passes in (sukhey) peace and (sukh-i) comfort. 2.

The soul-women (vihooni) bereft of (giaan) awareness of Naam – commit vices and – (muteeaa) are separated from (pir-u) the Almighty-husband; they (na jaaey) cannot (paaiaa) ereceive (piram-u) love.

Being of (agiaan) ignorant (mati) mind, there is (andheyr-u) darkness in mind and the Almighty cannot be seen; their (bhukh = hunger) craving, i.e. restless-ness, does not (jaaey) leave (bin-u) without (deykhey) seeing (pir-u) the Almighty-husband.

O (saheyleeo) girlfriends – the enlightened souls -, (aavh-u) come and (milh-u) meet, (deyh-u milaaey) help me to meet (pir-u) the Almighty-husband within.

However, she is told: Look for the guru, (satigur-u) the true guru (milai) is found with (poorai) good (bhaag-i) fortune, and through him (pir-u) the Almighty-husband is (paaiaa) found and one (samaaey) merges (sach-i) the Eternal. 3.

(Sey) those (saheeaa) girlfriends, (kau) on (jin) whom the Almighty-husband (karey) bestows (nadar-i) grace, are (sohaagni) fortunate.

They (pachhaanah-i = recognise) understand and obey (aapna) their (khasam) Almighty-husband, (dey-i) giving/dedicating their (tan-u = body) actions and (man-u = mind) thoughts to the Almighty.

One who (karey-i = make, door-i = far) dispels (haumai) ego, (paaiaa) finds (apna) her (var-u = spouse) Almighty-husband (ghar-i = in house) in the mind.

Such (sohaagni) fortunate soul-wives (karey-i) practise (bhagat-i) devotion, i.e. obey to the Almighty (andin-u = everyday) all the time and are (sobhvanteeaa) praise-worthy, says third Nanak. 4. 28. 61.

Note: This Shabad is about those soul-wives who have obtained the love of the Almighty-husband, and how.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Siriraag. (Ik-i = one type) some soul-wives (raavah-i= enjoy company) experience the Almighty within; at (kai) which (dar-i) door shall (hau) I (jaaey) go (poochhau) ask, i.e. how I may find them, the soul-wife reflects.

Then I decide to (bhaau kar-i) lovingly (seyvi = serve) follow instructions of (satigur-u) the true guru and request to (deyh-u milaaey) lead (mai) me to (pir-u) the Almighty-husband.

O (mundhey = woman) human being, (too) you should (chal-u = walk) comply with (bhaaey = will) directions (kai) of the guru.

You will remain (sahjey) intuitively (asmaaey = absorbed) in obedience to Naam and (raavah-i) experience pleasure of company of (aapna = own) your (pir-u) Almighty-husband (andin-u = everyday) all the time. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

The soul-wives (rateeaa) imbued (sabad-i) with teachings of the guru are (sohaagni) fortunate to be with the Almighty-husband; their (seegaar-i) adornment/merit is obedience (sabad-i = with the word) to commands (sachai) of the Eternal.

(Heyt-i = with, piaar-i = love) with lovingly obedience to the guru, they (paain-i) find (har-i) the Almighty (var-u) spouse in their (ghar-i = house) mind.

May (so) that (preetam-u) Beloved (prabh-u) Almighty (j-i) who (dey-i) gives (adhaar-u = support) sustenance (sabhsai) to all, (vasai) abide (man-i) in my mind. 2.

(Hau) I (sad) ever (balihaarai jaau = am sacrifice) adore those who (saalaahan-i) praise/obey (pir-u) the Almighty-husband (aapna = own) of all.

I shall (arpi) make offering, i.e. dedicate (man-u) mind/thoughts and (tan-u) body/actions and (laagaa) touch (tin kai) their (paaey) feet, i.e. respect and follow them.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Siriraag. O (ji) revered (har-i) Almighty, (too) you are (sachaa = true) unchanging and (sach-u) Eternal; (sabh-u kichh-u) everything is in (teyrai) your (cheerai) domain, i.e. You are present everywhere as the Spirit/laws of nature.

(Chauraasih) the eighty-four lakh life forms, i.e. all creatures, (phirey) keep (tarsadey) yearning for You (bin-u = without) by not (bhettey) finding/following (gur = guru, peerai = Muslim term for guru) the guru.

One whose transgressions (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (bakhsey) forgives and (bakhas laey) bestows grace, s/he (sadaa) ever experiences (sookh) peace (sareeai) in the body/mind.

S/he is one who, (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of the guru, (kari = do, seyv = service) obeys (gahir = deep) unfathomable and (gambheeai) profound (sach-u) Eternal Almighty, and thus find the Almighty. 1.

Man mere nām raṯe sukẖ ho▫e   Gurmaṯī nām salāhī▫ai ḏūjā avar na ko▫e ||1|| rahā▫o

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (sukh-u) peace (hoey) comes (ratey) by being imbued with love (naam-i) of the Almighty.

We should (saalaaheeai) praise/obey (naam-u) commands of the Almighty (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance; there is (na koey = not any) none (dooja = second) other Master wo can give solace. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Ḏẖaram rā▫e no hukam hai bahi sacẖā ḏẖaram bīcẖār   Ḏūjai bẖā▫e ḏusat āṯmā oh ṯerī sarkār

(Dharam Raaey) the metaphoric judge in Divine court has (hukam-u) orders to (bah-i) sit and (beechaar-i) consider deeds of the creatures with (sachaa = true) Divine (dharam-u = law) laws.

(Aatma) a soul caught in (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas, i.e. acting by self-will, is (dustt-u = evil) is a transgressor, is (teyri) your (sarkaar = rule) authority is on (oh-u) that – not those who obey the One Almighty.

Aḏẖi▫āṯmī har guṇ ṯās man jāpėh ek murār   Ŧin kī sevā ḏẖaram rā▫e karai ḏẖan savāraṇhār ||2||

(Adhiaatmi) those who look within to find the Almighty (taas-u) treasure of (gun) virtues, and (japah-i) remember/obey (eyk-u) the One (muraar-i = killer of demon Mur) destroyer of evil.

Dharam Raaey (karai = does, seyva = service) pays respects to them; (dha’nn-u = great) glory to the guru who (savaaranhaar-u) transforms – gives awareness of Naam. 2.

Man ke bikār manėh ṯajai man cẖūkai moh abẖimān   Āṯam rām pacẖẖāṇi▫ā sėhje nām samān

Such a person (tajai) gives up/dissolves (bikaar) vices (kai) of the mind (manah-i) in the mind itself; his/her (moh-u) fascination for temptations in the world-play and (abhimaan) vanity (chookai) ends.

Then (raam-u) the Almighty (aatam) within (pachaaniaa) is recognised/found and one remains (samaan-u) absorbed (naam-i) in Naam (sahjey = naturally) all the time.

Bin saṯgur mukaṯ na pā▫ī▫ai manmukẖ firai ḏivān   Sabaḏ na cẖīnai kathnī baḏnī kare bikẖi▫ā māhi samān ||3||

(Mukat-i) freedom from vices, and hence rebirth, is not (paaeeai) attained (bin-u) without following (satigur) the true guru; (manukh-i) a self-willed person (phirai = wanders) pursues vices like (divan-u) a mad person, i.e. in ignorance.

S/he does not (cheenai) understand (sabad-u = word) Divine commands, (karai = does, kathni badni = talking) tries to impress by talking but (samaan-u) remains caught in (bikhiaa) vices – hence cannot find God and remains in cycles of births and deaths. 3.

Sabẖ kicẖẖ āpe āp hai ḏūjā avar na ko▫e   Ji▫o bolā▫e ṯi▫o bolī▫ai jā āp bulā▫e so▫e

The Almighty (aapey = self) alone is what (aap-i = self) IT is, there is (na koey = not any) none (dooja = second) other like the Almighty.

Being present in every-one, we (boleeai) speak (tiau) that way (jiau) as God (bolaaey) causes to speak; and it happens (ja) when (soey = that one) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (bulaaey) causes to say; we cannot say anything else.

Gurmukẖ baṇī barahm hai sabaḏ milāvā ho▫e   Nānak nām samāl ṯū jiṯ sevi▫ai sukẖ ho▫e ||4||30||63||

(Baani) words (gurmukh-i) of the guru the guru are those of (brahm-u) the Almighty; one (hoey) attains (milaava) union with the Almighty (sabad-i = with the word) with obedience to the guru’s teachings.

O human being, keep (samaal-i = take care) remember (naam-u) Divine commands, (seyviai = by serving) by obeying (jit-u) which, – one does not transgress and – (sukh-u) comfort of union with the Almighty (hoey) is attained, says third Nanak. 4. 30. 63.

Sirīrāg mėhlā 3 Jag ha▫umai mail ḏukẖ pā▫i▫ā mal lāgī ḏūjai bẖā▫e   Mal ha▫umai ḏẖoṯī kivai na uṯrai je sa▫o ṯirath nā▫e

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Siriraag. (Jag-i = world) the human being (paaiaa) experiences (dukh-u) grief because of (mail-u = dirt) vice of (haumai) ego/acting by self-will; this (mal-u) dirt/vice (laagi) sticks/afflicts by – ignoring Divine commands and – following (doojai = second) other ideas.

This (mal-u) dirt of (haumai) ego is (kivai na) in no way (utrai) removed (dhoti) by washing the body, even if one (naaey) bathes at (sau) a hundred (taarath) holy places, i.e. by rituals

Baho biḏẖ karam kamāvḏe ḏūṇī mal lāgī ā▫e   Paṛi▫ai mail na uṯrai pūcẖẖahu gi▫ānī▫ā jā▫e ||1||

People (kamaavdey) perform (karam) rituals of (bah-u) numerous (bidh-i) types with that (dooni) double (mal-u = dirt) ego (aaey) comes and (laagi) sticks, i.e. ego/pride increases.

This (mail) dirt is not (utrai) removed (parreeai) by reading; you can (jaaey) go and (poochhah-u) ask (giaaneea) the learned, i.e. who reflect within. 1.

Man mere gur saraṇ āvai ṯā nirmal ho▫e   Manmukẖ har har kar thake mail na sakī ḏẖo▫e||1|| rahā▫o

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, it is only when one (aavai) comes (saran-i = sanctuary) in care and obedience of the guru, (ta) then (hoey) is (nirmal-u) cleansed, i.e. is rid of ego.

(Manmukh) those who act by self-will (thakey = get tired) keep (kar-i) saying (har-i har-i) mantras but (na saki) cannot (dhoey) wash off (mal-u = dirt) ego from the mind – which comes by understanding/obeying Naam/Divine commands. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Man mailai bẖagaṯ na hova▫ī nām na pā▫i▫ā jā▫e   Manmukẖ maile maile mu▫e jāsan paṯ gavā▫e

Awareness of Naam/Divine commands (na jaaey) cannot be (paaiaa) obtained, and (bhagat-i = devotion) obedience to the Almighty is not (hovaee = happen) possible in (man) a mind (mailey) polluted with ego.

(Manmukh) those acting by self-will are (mailey = dirty) afflicted by ego (muey = die) fall prey to vices and (jaasan-i) shall go to Divine court (gavaaey) losing (pat-i) honour, i.e. are presented as transgressors.

Gur parsādī man vasai mal ha▫umai jā▫e samā▫e   Ji▫o anḏẖerai ḏīpak bālī▫ai ṯi▫o gur gi▫ān agi▫ānṯajā▫e ||2||

Naam (vasai) abides (man-i) in mind (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of the guru and (haumai) ego (jaaey) gets (samaaey) dissolved within.

(Jiu) like (deepak-u) a lamp (baaleeai) is lit to remove (andheyrai) darkness, (giaan-i) awareness of Naam imparted by the guru (tajaaey) gets rid of (agiaan-u) ignorance of the mind. 2.

I have (bhav-i = wandered) seen (sabh-i) the whole (sansaar-u) world, i.e. asked people and learnt that here is no cause of (dukh-u) suffering (jeyvadd-u) as big as (maaiaa) acting by self-will.

(Sukh-u) comfort/peace is (paaeeai) attained (gurmati) by following the guru’s counsel to (ur dhaar-i) keep in mind/obey (sach-u = true) the inevitable (naam-u) Divine commands. 3.

NOTE: This Shabad has the setting of a wife wanting to act as she likes and still hope to win the love of her spouse. She is advised on what she needs to do. This is a metaphor for how the soul-wife can unite with the God-husband. The Shabad is addressed to one’s own soul.

O human being, keep (samaal-i = take care) remember (naam-u) Divine commands, (seyviai = by serving) by obeying (jit-u) which, – one does not transgress and – (sukh-u) comfort of union with the Almighty (hoey) is attained, says third Nanak. 4. 30. 63.

This (mal-u) dirt of (haumai) ego is (kivai na) in no way (utrai) removed (dhoti) by washing the body, even if one (naaey) bathes at (sau) a hundred (taarath) holy places, i.e. by rituals

Gur parsādī man vasai mal ha▫umai jā▫e samā▫e   Ji▫o anḏẖerai ḏīpak bālī▫ai ṯi▫o gur gi▫ān agi▫ānṯajā▫e ||2||

Ham kī▫ā ham karhage ham mūrakẖ gāvār Karṇai vālā visri▫ā ḏūjai bẖā▫e pi▫ār

(Ham) we human beings are (moorakh= foolish) ignorant and (gaavaar) uninformed if we say (ham) we (keeaa) did this we or (karahgaey) shall do this.

(Karnai vaala = doer) the Omnipotent Almighty is forgotten because (piaar-u) love (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas.

Mā▫i▫ā jevad ḏukẖ nahī sabẖ bẖav thake sansār   Gurmaṯī sukẖ pā▫ī▫ai sacẖ nām ur ḏẖār ||3||

Jis no mele so milai ha▫o ṯis balihārai jā▫o   Ė man bẖagṯī raṯi▫ā sacẖ baṇī nij thā▫o

One (jis no) whom the Almighty (meyley) leads, (so) that person finds the guru; I (balihaarai) adore (tis-u) that person.

When (aey) this human (man) mind (ratiaa) is imbued with (bhagti) devotion by (sach-u) true (baani) words/teachings of the guru to obey Naam, it remains in (nij) own (thaau) place, i.e. is focussed on Naam within without wavering.

Man raṯe jihvā raṯī har guṇ sacẖe gā▫o   Nānak nām na vīsrai sacẖe māhi samā▫o ||4||31||64||

One whose (man-i) mind is (ratey) imbued, his/her (jihva) tongue is also (rati) imbued, and (gaau = sings) praises (gun) virtues of (sachey) the Eternal (har-i) Almighty – and one emulates them.

S/he does not (veesrai) forget Naam and (samaau) merges (maah-i) in (sachey) the Eternal, says third Nanak. 4. 31. 64.
